  1. I recently tried The Lost Fleet again (found book one in a Half-Price Books for $1.99, couldn't pass that up) and I'm liking it a surprising amount. I know that later books get bigger, since I accidentally started with one of those, but these early ones are great for being light reading that I don't have to work too hard at, which makes them a great break. I also got a copy of The Illiad, and really enjoyed it! I would have liked a poetry translation, but prose was available, so I read it. I'm trying to get my hands on The Eagle Of The Ninth, but it's looking like that might be harder than I anticipated.
  2. Several things:

    • If you have the chance, and you haven't been, go to Yellowstone.  That was the fricken coolest.  200% increase in geysers seen, 400% for bears seen in wild, just neat geothermal things (fumaroles!)  And also the colors.  Holy cow, there's so many of them, no wonder artists love that place.
    • The fact that I can't logic my mental health using controlled, manipulated, and responding variables is actually kinda annoying, but eh.  At least the picture's getting cohesive?
    • Oppenheimer's coming out, and I am actually remarkably excited.  I'm not usually big on movies, it's very hard for me to be comfortable watching one the first time, so I usually don't.  But I really want to see this one.
    • I'm currently weirdly at peace with the fact that I have very few people who I am in regular contact with (by which I mean go and do things, hanging out) and I don't know what to do with it, cause I'm in that weird spot where most of my friends are just enough older than me that they're leaving and I'm not yet, so on one hand, what's the point?  On the other, I know I need interaction, it's just exhausting to seek it out because it doesn't come naturally in the slightest.
    • The Sun Eater is still a very good book series, I just reread book three and loved it.
    • I have three Secret Projects on hold right now, and have read none of them, which is utterly hilarious to me (Tress is soon, though)
    • I know I'm barely active on here at all anymore, but I think I'm going to be less so.  Tbh the wider internet kinda scares me (Not y'all, the Shard is lovely) and I really need to double down on figuring out how to be a functioning, healthy member of society before I spread my wings and immediately spiral into tragedy.  I'll still peek in occasionally.  And I like talking with y'all.  The trouble is that I forgot how to do that, I think, and relearning is something I have to do IRL so I can carry that over.

Catch you on the flip side!

come back and tell the rest of us when you figure out how plz o/

  3. I'm still working through the Yearbook Album from Sleeping at Last, but I keep going back to Mars from his Planets album, and this song is so darned good. 'Our questions ricochet/ like broken satellites/ how our bodies, born to heal/ become so prone to die'? Flays me. And that's just one of the lines, I could probably say something about every one of the lyrics to this song.
  4. I just read The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, and it was good, I think. I was a little skeptical because in general I'm not a fan of the Fifties in literature, but it turned out to not matter. Maybe I don't like the American fifties. I went to a Half Price Books and got a copy of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, so I'll be rereading that.
  5. I found out a couple months back that Saturn by Sleeping at Last is a Really Great Song, and tonight I went and listened to Astronomy, Vol. 1, by the same artist. And it was fantastic! I will admit, I'm horrendously confused by the organization of the discography, but I will definitely be listening to more from this artist.
  6. Hola! Tengo una pregunta pequeño. Cual es la diferencia en las palabras bella, lindo, y bonita? Yo se todos es un poco similar a 'pretty' en ingles, pero quiero aprender las traducción exacta. Gracias!
  7. So, I was browsing the library website, as one does.  And I was struck by a thought.

Stated quickly, the most recent three trends in particularly YA literature (that I am aware of) have been paranormal romance, dystopia, and fae.  What do you think the next one will be?

I'm getting the feeling it's going to be retellings of Greek mythology.  I've seen a surprising amount of those cropping up.  But what do y'all think?

      Para Romance: Bcos Twilight

      Dystopia: Bcos Hunger Games

      Fae: Bcos Brando Mull

If it's Greek Mythology then it's because the people who grew up on Riordan are starting to write now. Given Sanderson's unprecedented impact on the fantasy community I can see a lot of Hard Magic + Hard Worldbuilding being the next big thing. I can also see a lot of shounen-style novels cropping up with the advent of popular animes like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan.

I think the Rick Riordan things would be classified more as Children's Literature than YA.

I was never big on Percy Jackson, so I can't be certain, but I was under the impression that PJ and Rick Riordan were more middle grade. (As Queen pointed out while I was writing this)  But that actually dovetails quite neatly into Fadran's point!

  8. I went to Michael's for a birthday gift, and they had sketchbooks on clearance. So now I have motivation to actually fill my current sketchbook, and by extension, actually practice my art.
  9. I think out of all the commissions, this is my absolute favorite pose - it's just so dynamic!
  10. My hobbies tend to come and go cyclically, so I'll spend a couple weeks on one thing, then move on to the next. Sewing, drawing, piano/composition, and so on. Occasionally, I'll have a month long recurrence of my oldest interests: vulcanology and astronomy, where I'll find whatever books I can on those subjects, and tear through them. Drawing is probably the most difficult, because it's the hardest for me to practice. But Im' working on it, so my proportions are getting better.
  11. Just watched Forrest Gump. It was... good? I wasn't the biggest fan, but the parts that didn't make me extremely uncomfortable were good.
  12. Probably being positive. And maybe being part of the early FOTT, but I'm so rarely on now that I doubt anyone remembers that.
  13. I know next to nothing about those, actually. What do you think about the Marianas Trench?
  14. Not particularly. I apparently am very low maintenance when it comes to chairs. TPBM is interested in volcanoes.
  15. I wanted a Rosharan name, and being a (something) spren seemed good. Kindness was a trait that was on my mind at the time, but I didn't like how many 's' are in a row with Kindnessspren. My eyes skip over the word when there's that many 's's in there, so I broke it up.
  16. Song of the week is Nancy Mulligan by Ed Sheeran. I am laying down, and my foot's tapping the wall, this song is so danceable! I think I've listened to it fifteen times today. I've been told that's not normal, but eh. My neurons like it.
  17. I got a new plant, and I'm very happy about it, because this one can live on my windowsill.

I really like plants, guys, they make me very happy :D  I mean, it's so nice to have green things around!

Agreed!! I love my plants :))

  18. I just finished Knowing What We Know by Simon Winchester. It's about the transmission of knowledge, and it was extremely interesting. I also really like the author's writing style - I've previously read his books on Krakatoa and precision engineering, and he's simply put, an excellent writer.
  19. Space Opera Had some trouble with getting the post formatting tools to cooperate, hope it doesn't make it difficult to read!
  20. Listening to the Cinderella 2015 soundtrack again. It's just got this vibe to it that I love. I'm not sure how, but it's definitely going to get incorporated in a Major Life Event somewhere down the road.
  21. Got my hands on a copy of The Tudor Tailor, which is an excellent book about Tudor fashion, and even better - comes with actual, usable patterns!
  22. I've been kinda wondering if she'll make it in. It seems like a really difficult role to film, though given that this is Villenueve, that's probably not as much a hurdle as I think.
  23. Prom poetry?  Nah, pickup poetry.  A collection of poems about roadside frustrations.  Selections include:

A Roundabout Would Really Improve This Intersection, Do You Really Need That Big A Truck?, and Please Don't Let My Manual Roll Back On This Hill Into The Guy Tailgating Me.

Coming soon, to an esoteric cashless inner-city bookstore two hundred miles from you.
