surprising character pairings in new plot description
Ashbringer replied to gruntle's topic in Stormlight Archive
I was under the impression that Kaladin and Szeth would be flying via Highstorm, possibly one accelerated by Dalinar. And I don’t think space or time as we know it really exist in the Spiritual. -
New Contract Loophole Theory: Ecological Disaster
Ashbringer replied to coolsnow7's topic in Cosmere Discussion
A good amount of those Death Rattles seem to relate to the burning of Ashyn. Not sure if those would actually be Death Rattles, as they were past events? But could be echoes. I do feel like the destruction of Roshar was stated as an explicit end of Odium’s binding, somewhere.- 24 replies

What Vasher was doing during the occupation.
Ashbringer replied to Crucible of Shards's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Vasher might be able to heal a Herald's mind - specifically Taln's, because he's had a bit more damage than the wear-and-tear that the other Heralds seem to be suffering from. Healing that has always seen a bit unlikely, but if anything could do it a Divine Breath can. I doubt he'd die yet either, though. Stormlight hasn't really foreshadowed that he's capable of that, and it would be somewhat unsatisfying out of the blue. Honestly I thought he left Urithiru because the suppressor fabrial could eject his Breath if tuned correctly, but I don't think that's the case. -
I think I actually have a theory for why finding a 4th Bondsmith Spren might be seditious, and that being you might need a Connection to one or more of the Shards of Roshar to qualify as a Bondsmith Spren. That leaves the current set as the spren of Honor (the Stormfather), Cultivation (the Nightwatcher), and Honor+Cultivation. But those aren’t the only possible combinations, because we’re missing a Shard. Odium, Honor+Odium, Cultivation+Odium, and all Three are still options - but would require a spren touched by Odium. Pretty easy to see why that might be seditious to the Radiants, but Rhythym of War (book or song) showed it’s not impossible. I still think Mishram could become a Bondsmith spren.

Unmade links to Polestones SA5 Preview Spoilers
Ashbringer replied to The Stick's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My interpetation was that you need a very deep Connection to an Unmade in order to bind it, which Dalinar had to Nergaoul - but also that forging very deep Connections out of a hat is just what Bondsmiths can do. BAM’s always felt Bondsmithy to me - Connecting to an entire race, giving them Voidlight, seems pretty close to what Dalinar can do, and doesn’t mimic another Order or Surge as well as, say, Sja-Anat (who IMO seems more Truthwatcher/Progression-y, wonder why, or possibly Soulcasting-y). Maybe BAM’s supposed to line up with Windrunners/Stonewards. Although… maybe there’s another idea. Would have to look at a few things. Has anyone given thought to the Unmade being the Inverse of an Order? Nergaoul removing self-control as opposed to the Dustbringers seeking it, Moelach giving up truths as opposed to Truthwatchers finding it, Ashertmarn giving self-indulgence as opposed to Stonewards’ sense of need? -
Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I still think BAM (and possibly the other two intelligent Unmade) should be capable of being a Bondsmith spren. Perhaps granting Voidlight in place of Storm/Towerlight (would the Nightwatcher give Lifelight?), but she seems to be enough about drawing Investiture and Connection. And also the whole might-destroy-all-of-Roshar thing seems very Bondsmith. Assuming that the Wind has something to do with Ishar, though - what would that be? She claims it’s the Vessel changing (or perhaps more accurately, Odium being unheld for a brief moment). Maybe she needs a Bondsmith to fix a Connection to something. -
Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
“Listen to the Bondsmith” is a neat double meaning - Kaladin is going to go listen to the Bondsmith Dalinar, giving him his more official task of… going to listen to the Bondsmith Ishar. Different contexts (listen for orders/guidance vs listen as a therapist/guide), but same phrase. Navani is less likely IMO. The Wind finding refuge in Shinovar makes some sense if her opposition is truly the Storm(father)(faker?), because the highstorms are weaker there. But that’s probably not an Ashyn connection as much as a geographical one. As for worshipping the Storm, I’m guessing that means Honor and the Stormfather - makes sense that the humans would turn to them and away from the Wind once the Desolations started coming, but the singer gods were Odium and the Fused, with the Everstorm only a new creation. Although… the Shin are worshippers of Stone. Going to hazard a guess that that will be relevant later. -
Honestly that line reminds me of what happened with Nomad, more than anything. We still don’t know that it’s Kaladin writing the epigraphs. But not talking to Kaladin (or somehow losing the Connection to Kaladin) seem the most likely.

Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
In addition to Spiritual-Realm-Shenanigans, if the Unmade are as strong as they seem, they may be able to bypass the supression, like 4th Oath Kaladin could. Or if they are ancient Spren of Adonalsium or Honor or Cultivation, then corrupted by Odium, they may also be able to bypass the restrictions. (I’m kind of curious how the supression fabrials affect Renarin and Rlain as well, in either setting.) I’m inclined to believe that the Wind is what Wit suggests, or at least began as that. I feel like if it became Dai-Gonarthis, then that Unmade would be the one carrying the name Blightwind. -

Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There's a server for the RPG? Ooooh I should join in on that But that's quite interesting. I feel like a decent amount of Alder's quotes and wind things could be attributed to Syl or perception... but not all. -
Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I’ve seen some theories about there being a Roshar-Spren… but I think half of them think that it’s going to be Ba-Ado-Mishram. The Unmade are another one of those pretty big mysteries. Nothing about them makes sense. If we are going with Tanavast, it’s possible something changed in RoW that let him act more independently from the Stormfather. Any of the previous words seemed to only occur when the Stormfather was present, while this one is not. (What that change is could be a lot of things - Sibling, 4th Oath, heck even Dalinar forcibly Connecting to Kaladin.) -

One other thing that's probably worth mentioning (Sunlit Man) -
Minor Mistborn Era 1 spoilers: Do we think that "they mustn't see" is in reference to the dying Herald? Or to Roshar as a whole? I think the simplest example is that it's in reference to the Everstorm, which could have brought the whole Oathpact crashing down on its own, but I'm not sure exactly why the Heralds shouldn't see it. Also the Davars are very deeply tied to the Ghostbloods, even back then. And Thaidakar was clearly planning something involving Gavilar, even if the Parshendi and Szeth beat him to the punch, and Axindweth was active in Kholinar at that time. So I don't think it's that outlandish to be on the same day. Depends what Lady Davar was thinking, honestly. We still don't know that.

[Theory] Radiant is Chana's Self Aware Honorblade
Ashbringer replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Deadeye Shardblades can shift size based on the Shardbearer, I wouldn't be overly surprised if the Honorblades could do the same if necessary, if not more so because they can be used on Oathgates. (Especially if the size of Jezrien's Honorblade is part of Szeth's own perception of it as more a normal Shardblade, same as the ten heartbeats was. In the pseudo-canon Herald artworks, the Honorblades are more normal sword sized.) Would Shallan know how to do that, no idea. -

So I'm not entirely sure where to put this, or if it even belongs in the Spoiler section, but it's something I thought was interesting. We seem like we're getting some new lore and art with the Cosmere RPG, in due time, but I wanted to point out something I don't think I've ever seen before. I feel like "Elsegate" is... fairly self-explanatory in to what it is and what it relates to, but I feel like it could refer to a few things. Is it just the mini-perpendicularity that an Elsecall creates to enter the Cognitive Realm? Is it a fuller perpendicularity that would allow an Elsecaller to transport multiple people there? Or does it act fully as a mini-Oathgate that can transport people across distances, as maybe an intro to Stormlight FTL? Probably not that last one. But it'll be interesting if it comes up in Wind and Truth

[Theory] Radiant is Chana's Self Aware Honorblade
Ashbringer replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Honorblades have been stated to be fairly small compared to regular Shardblades. It certainly seems like she’d had her Shardblade by then, one way or another, so maybe it seemed small in comparison to Testament. -
Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Ashbringer replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think the main question for if the voice is Tanavast is, why now? Previously we didn't have more than a hint that Tanavast could still be around. With him being one of the premiere Storm-faker candidates, that's changed a bit. But then why did the Tanavast give Gavilar the full intercommunication, then give Dalinar the "prerecorded messages"? Especially if Tanavast was then also talking to Dalinar specifically, if only for a time. I mean, there's the simple explanation that Tanavast was just being petty with Dalinar after he'd been pseudo-betrayed by Gavilar. The prologue seems to imply that. But if all the evidence that's been seen before with Dalinar is evidence for Tanavast, then Tanavast broke that promise. Did something big change at the end of RoW that would change this? Kaladin swearing the 4th Oath could maybe be a trigger, but Jasnah (and Nale, and maybe Szeth depending on how that counts) has already done that. Jezrien's death was a year earlier. Ishar gained a bit of sentience, but that was temporary and also probably should have happened in WoR/OB when Dalinar swore oaths. Odium's agreement with Dalinar, Rayse's death, the Tower's reawakening, or even Phendora's anti-Investiture death all could be it. Sort of depends what Tanavast is looking for. If I had to go for an "I'd like to solve the puzzle"(or more accurately, I had to agree with other people who try solving puzzle), it's that Tanavast needs Kaladin (since Dalinar is out) to take up really-actually-dead Jezrien's place as a Herald to reforge the Oathpact, because a pact of Honor wouldn't work with(out) 10 people. I think that would make the most sense, and somewhat makes sense on the timing (Ishar's realization + Jezrien's death), but doesn't really explain why Tanavast seemed to consider Gavilar. -
Ah. Makes sense. ... well, not entirely, but it makes sense in a Stormlight kind of way

The Cosmere RPG Kickstarter is here!
Ashbringer commented on Rasarr's article in Brandon and Book News
From my understanding, both of this system and similar TTRPG systems like D&D, all you need to play the game is three things: 1) the Stormlight Handbook (or Mistborn Handbook) which should take you through Character Creation and worldbuilding/encounter guides, 2) a set of dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 - also the plot die, but that can just be another d6 if you don't need to be fancy, and don't need to be the specific special Stormlight dice if you don't want them), and 3) actually getting that group together to play the game. That last one is typically the hard part . So all you need, in theory, is the Stormlight (or Mistborn) Handbook, which you can get digitally or physically with the first two pledge levels. That, a set of dice, and some friends should get you through everything you need to know. Now, the other materials included will likely be of great help, but that kind of depends on how much improvisational skill you have. The Player tier includes a "Plot Deck", which from my understanding isn't necessary to play but instead can serve as a replacement or inspiration for the positive/negative effects from the Plot Die. It also includes a dice set and the World Guide, which isn't necessary if you know the setting but is a good introduction to it if you or your friends don't. The GM tier also includes many items that would be a great convenience, but aren't necessary (or don't need to be Cosmere edition necessarily) like a pre-built adventure module, GM screen to cover your notes, and tokens and reminder cards and all those things. All those things are helpful, but really all you need to play a TTRPG is some friends, some dice, a Handbook, and a big imagination (and/or some imagination-boosting extras). (Mostly unrelated, but you could also probably make a pledge, then ask a question, then edit/remove your pledge based on how much you like the answer. Doesn't really fix the problem, and I agree it's odd that you can't comment without pledging, but it can be worked around.) -
Do you all think bam is evil?
Ashbringer replied to Acolyte of Radiance's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Easiest explanation is that BAM is going to be like Sja-Anat. Not "good", but also not strictly aligned with Odium. But she was raising an army of Void-formed singers, so, she could have a lot of motives. -
[Theory] Radiant is Chana's Self Aware Honorblade
Ashbringer replied to teknopathetic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
One thing: as mentioned in the WaT Prologue, Chana's Honorblade is very distinctive, with a bifurcated blade. I'm not sure if that means Shallan should recognize it, or if someone else, but it definitely doesn't look like an ordinary Shardblade (or a normal blade). Based on Szeth wielding Jezrien's Honorblade and also Azure's blade, Rosharan's aren't the best judge of weird-Shardblade-ness, but it is a thought. But the Prologue also drew specific attention to Chana and her Honorblade... hmm... I don't think Radiant would be an external entity for a few other reasons (the main reason is Shallan has been moving more towards a realistic portrayal of DiD as the series goes on, and 1/3 of her main alters being something else would be somewhat of a detriment to that). But "Mother's Soul" could definitely mean a great many things if Chana really does end up being Shallan's mom. And one of those alters being more capable of actually using the Blade could make sense. Wouldn't be the first time Radiant's kept secrets.
