Scadrian vs. Rosharan magic post RoW
LewsTherinTelescope replied to NameIess's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree the average person can't just do that, but I would note that "mental speed" in Feruchemy also comes with things like intuition and logical leaps, so scientists who already start off with a decent idea of things could potentially advance pretty much as fast as they can physically set tests up, if they have Compounded mental speed. Only solves things up to a certain point, because you do need to actually do the assembling, but it cuts out a massive amount of time that would be spent researching and theorizing.- 1816 replies

Navani's Notebook Transliteration
LewsTherinTelescope replied to Palanaeum's topic in Stormlight Archive
Basically a stereotypical Canadian, eh? -
That's possible, but I think it's more likely just that the skaze, being Splinters of the Shard of conquest, like conquering things. Especially considering how they keep narrowing the area that supposedly needs to be conquered. "Jaddeth will return once the whole world serves him!.... okay once the whole region serves him!.... fine, fine, once everywhere between us and this mountain range serves him!" Guess we might find out in the Elantris sequels, since WoBs say that the book will take place with the Fjordell making up that last interpretation and declaring they have been successful after all and Jaddeth will return.

I don't really feel like I agree. I think it's just a theme Brandon likes, and so has mentioned a couple times. (Note that I'm talking about the greater Cosmere here; it's been brought up in suspiciously similar ways often enough in Stormlight that I could definitely accept something special going on in this case.) Now that is a good catch, nice! Haven't seen this quote brought up before. Very curious. Tangential note, for those who have read Aether of Night:

Considering we know the new order would horrify the old one, I don't know if the new ones loving exploiting loopholes (mainly to murder people) says much about what the order is ideally like xD That's a fair point too
-
I feel like that goes against the spirit of the order, even if it's not exactly prohibited. Skybreakers seem like they're more supposed to be the types to change the bad law in the first place (Nale's "the law cannot be moral, but you can be moral as you create laws" speech).
-
That seems like the exact opposite of his entire arc up until this point, though.
-
I don't know if Kal blames Moash enough to forgive him in the first place.

I think Wax is who Harmony was thinking about in the letter/is an evolution of that thought, but I agree he may not end up being it in the final form, so to speak. Failed attempt, which makes what happened with Lessie feel even more cruel, tbh.
-
I don't believe so, but I would suspect the answer ends up being either "it explodes", or "it gets Leeched somehow"

Wax literally calls himself Harmony's sword. (SoS 25)
-
Ah, okay. I agree it probably didn't change because of Odium, yeah, as that seems like a really colossal waste of Investiture, lmaooo. But I won't rule out it being placed there knowing he'd come.
-
Yeah, but each individual piece of metal has a (theoretically) measurable ratio, right? (Measuring the exact ratio does sound probably impractical, though, lol)
-
No clue. I disagree with the assumption a Shard has an inbuilt color. Then why is Voidlight being black + violet a dealbreaker for it matching the moon?
-
Except what he says is that it's not actually quite specific ratios. It's sort of how you can think of it, but isn't an exact representation of what's happening, because they're one thing, not an alloy of two things. At least, that's how I read it, but it's up for interpretation, I suppose.
-
And Nomon is blue instead of "white and so barely blue you can't see it except up close", and Mishim is green instead of "white and so barely green you can't see it except up close". The colors of the moons are simplified a bit. Violet is a type of purple, no? Then the heck is Voidlight?

With Gavilar and Dalinar, they were bonded to the Stormfather, and the visions kept literally telling them to unite everyone. For the Sunmaker, he pretty much just wanted to conquer the world, which plenty of people tried (the Shin even tried their hand at it once or twice). Also, the ties to the Sunmaker are... questionable, to my understanding (all of the highprinces try and tie their authority back to him, which means at least pretending they've got a direct line of descent).

Earlier, even — bronzepulses were introduced in TFE, the Well's pulse in WoA, and it looks like there's even hints in Elantris of all places. (Raoden finds a book talking about why only certain shapes work for Aons, and it's explained with terms he doesn't understand like "frequency" and "pulse length".)

That's more Brandon using imprecise terminology than anything else, to my understanding (which could be wrong). (I believe he's implied ettmetal's an alloy a few times too, which is definitely wrong, as you mentioned.) I can see it being open to interpretation, though.
-
Honor and Cultivation also create mixed godmetals, but they're definitely separate Shards still. Fair. But again, we've seen zero indication it is, I feel. (In fact, I'm not sure it's possible to — I think you would more likely just run into the issue of having to uphold Oaths by all component Shards.) Though, Sazed probably has the power to release himself, as he controls both parties to the agreement in this case.
-
Except the only thing that points towards them being changed sufficiently is that they would drop tied together, which doesn't have to mean they're one thing (tie two twist ties together, they stay together, but are two different things). They have two separate Intents that pull Sazed two different ways constantly, Sazed can split off bits of each if he wants, ettmetal is so reactive because it's in conflict with itself Spiritually, Sazed refers to himself as holding two Shards rather than one, Brandon refers to them as two separate Shards, Brandon says his halves don't mesh well... (I posted most of these above, I'm just linking them again here for the sake of convenience [though a couple were not already posted].) If Harmony was truly combined into one thing, you'd expect it wouldn't rip itself apart with the slightest push like it seems to reaaaally want to do.
