  1. Perfectly acceptable. Let us know who finally wins! (6 words!)
  2. Don't worry, I'm not against fun. There, six words. It's ok. I just wanted to pop in a reminder before it got TOO out of hand, to avoid a potential slap-on-the-hand scenario for simply getting carried away while having fun.
  3. Reminder: Please try not to get too spammy in here. Continually posting every minute or two could be misconstrued as artificially inflating your post count, especially when the posts are short back-and-forths like this.
  4. Right, i mean where you stopped listening to it at. As far as I'm aware, the android and iOS version should sync properly (haven't tried it, but i believe they should). The only one that DOESN'T synch is the PC version. The android/iOS version sync your position to the cloud, and update accordingly. The PC version doesn't do this, and they acknowledge that it doesn't. As far as how hard is it to pick up where you left off, it's pretty much just like any audio device/program. You have a slider of where you're at that you can drag around, so if you have your phone handy you can just look up where you were at and move the PC version there, but then you also have to perform the reverse and manually move your phone to the position you stopped at on your PC. It's not an ideal situation, but it works, i've done it before. As far as expiring credits go, i've never gotten so close that i'm not entirely sure how it happens. I don't know if they send you a reminder or not. They DO send you a reminder when you get new credits. Edit: it's also worth noting that there's free trial stuff everywhere. They sponsor a lot of things so you can try it for free pretty easily. You can also buy books ad-hoc, you don't need a subscription. You can just pay for whatever you want.
  5. Yeah, there used to be some books that cost two credits, but in so far as i've seen, they've done away with that. I'm on the 2 credits/month plan and i'm able to stockpile up to 12 credits. I think the 1 credit/month plan lets you stockpile 6 or 8, not sure. Also, the sync ability between devices is pretty good with audible, with one exception. The PC version doesn't synch between the mobile versions, so it wont sync your bookmark if you use PC and Android/iOS. The only other MAJOR issue is the fact that it's pretty heavily DRM'd. You have to use their audible applications to listen to your books. Period. You're also limited in how many devices you can install it on, but the limit is pretty generous (to the tune of like 6-10 devices, i think), and you can reset/remove devices at any time, even if you don't have them anymore. The only issue I have with the credit system is the fact that i feel like i'm wasting them if i spend them on books that are cheap/short. They do occasionally hold promotions with credits, with like a "buy 2 get the 3rd free" thing using credits. Edit: All in all, I do recommend them, but it's not without its short comings. I also haven't tried their "whispersync" stuff, which is basically books that are set up so that it will sync your audio position to the book position on their kindle app, so you can go between reading and audio book at will.
  6. So i recently got my fiancee a lenovo yoga 2 pro, and I am forced to admit that windows 8 is actually really slick in this sort of form factor for a laptop. I still don't agree with it in its current form for more traditional PC's, though the updates they're bringing to it are moving in the right direction.
  7. Ok, so, I'm an IT person by trade, so I suppose I'm considered a 'professional' when it comes to this sort of stuff, but i'll start out with this: Long story short - There's nothing you personally can do about it. This is all based on an SSL vulnerability with a particular SSL version that's unfortunately quite common on the internet. The only way to be protected against it is to not use any site that has this particular version of SSL. That being said, ALL major sites and their web servers are likely to have updated by now. Leonardus essentially has the right of it, in how it happens at a high level. Essentially, the problem lies within the way the SSL protocol pings back and forth to make sure the connection is still alive. The way it works goes something like this: Client: "Server, are you alive? If so, reply 123, 3 characters" Server: "123" The problem here is the second part in the client request, where it asks for 3 characters. If this value is inflated, the SSL protocol instead replies with stuff randomly in memory of the server. This could range from anything to what pages a random user visited, to someone's logon information. So in the instance of the exploit, it would look something like this: Client "Server, are you alive? If so, reply 123, 100 characters." Server "123; User1 connected on port 10; user2 logged in, username [email protected]:password letm3in; user3 log" Granted, it's not as simple as above, and your username/password probably won't be exactly in plain readable text, but it gives someone a starting point to try to get your information. The only reason you would need to change your password, is if your password got compromised. If you are afraid this has happened, you can definitely do that, but i wouldn't say you're "required" to do it. If you fear for your security, however, many big sites such as google, facebook, twitter, etc. allow you to do two-factor authentication. I highly recommend this if you fear for this sort of thing. What two-factor authentication does is it requires you to, after you put in your password, plug in a token on a following screen that is usually tied to an authenticator of some sort. Most sites let you set this up with your cell phone, either through an app or through text messages. So this sort of "second" password is a random string of characters that will change every 30 seconds to a minute or so. What this does is make sure that, even if someone has your password, they ALSO need your cellphone/authenticator to access your account. This provides a second, very strong layer of security, and is generally of very minor inconvenience to yourself.
  8. And Kaladin is totally a Green Lantern now. [/theory]
  9. Welcome to 17th shard! I moved your topic out of "introduce yourself" and into "cosmere theories" because it's likely to garner more attention and discussion there, as well as being the proper forum for this sort of discussion, and off topic for the introduce yourself area. This will help keep spoilers out of an off-topic location. That said, feel free to go create a new introduction topic just saying hello and telling people a bit about yourself, if you wish!
  10. Moved to the WoR subforum, since the discussion is centered around it, and likely to be riddled with spoilers.
  11. I recently bought a Moto X with an ebony wood finish. It is awesome.
  12. Right. Just saying "Linux" these days doesn't really cover it sometimes. Example: Ubuntu vs Android vs ChromeOS vs SteamOS. Four significantly different OS's with different purposes.
  13. Those any good? I've never used one. Not sure how i like the idea of EVERYTHING being cloud-based..... Also, technically, i think that falls under the "linux" umbrella, because i'm like 90% sure the OS is linux based
  14. As a user: The two-form factor schism between desktop and metro mode is a terrible idea, and feels clunky. The spacing and use of metro mode as a touch interface doesn't jive well with keyboard and mouse, and feels too clunky for me to like it. If they would have changed the start menu to be more like the slide out menus they have, instead of having this metro start screen, i would be OK with this, and it would help to merge both mouse/keyboard and touch interfaces rather well without creating a jarring two-form factor OS like they did. Also: RUN METRO APPS IN A WINDOW (yes i know it's coming, but WHY this wasn't a feature/option from launch, i have no idea) As a software engineer: the multi-framework environment just to code for one OS is a terrible idea. The fact that i have to choose to make a metro app or a "legacy" app is a terrible choice when it's one OS, make it all one framework. The should have added the core metro app functionality as part of the .net framework and been done with it, and then you can choose to create metro/desktop modes for your application. The fact that they are now endorsing their HTML/javascript environment as a preferred development platform is a huge slight to the .net community, which, IMO, .net is probably the best thing to ever come out of MS in terms of programming support. In fact, they should have just left silverlight within .net and used silverlight as the basis for their metro apps. That would have been an outstanding decision, IMO. That said, this is all personal opinion, which what it all comes down to anyways. I look forward to the rumored windows 9 to see how they will be cleaning up and improving upon windows 8, and until then i will continue with windows 7.
  15. If you like Arkham Horror, i HIGHLY recommend Eldritch Horror. It plays very similar to arkham horror in style and goals, and it's made by the same people (FFG) and also Call of Cthulhu/Lovecraftian based, but i honestly enjoy it more. It's much more streamlined, and less "chunky" than AH, and your goals change depending on the ancient one chosen, and the randomly drawn mystery. Essentially, where AH is you running around trying to save a small town trying to stop the ancient one, Eldritch horror is you traveling the globe trying to stop the ancient one from awakening. Unlike AH where your main goal is to essentially close gates, in EH gates are still a thing, but that's not your main goal. Your main goal is to solve 3 mysteries, which are randomly drawn. An example of a couple i remember off the top of my head: 1) Close a gate per normal rules, and afterwards discard 2 spell cards. Put a counter on the mystery, when you have counters equal to 1/2 the amount of players, the mystery is solved. 2) When you cast a spell, spend a clue token. Put a counter on the mystery, when the counters equal the number of players, solve the mystery. Other board games of interest i enjoy: Mansions of madness (another CoC game by FFG, plays slightly similar to descent listed below) Descent 2nd edition (essentially a 'D&D light' board game, except competitive with players vs 'DM') Munchkin quest (like the munchkin card game except with miniatures and dungeon exploration) Space alert (a super-frantic, chaotic space board game)
  16. I got into the closed beta for this some few months ago, didn't play it too terribly much, though. All in all, it's pretty fun, seems fairly heavily MtG based though, which isn't necessarily bad. My username is the same thing i use everywhere; Eerongal
  17. Didn't we already have one of these somewhere? Coulda sworn we did..... Anyways, Eero's from Iowa, grew up in Missouri.
  18. As is my tradition this time of year, I have competed again in Ludum Dare! I posted up my game just a little bit ago. This was a collaboration between me and a buddy of mine, the same guy who helped me out last year. The theme this year was "You only get one", and honestly, i found this theme really restricting, and feel that the final product is sort of meh. Based on the comments so far, a few people seemed to have dug it, though! You can see my entry here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=2978
  19. To those not as obviously cool as me and not paying very close attention to this game with an almost ferverish, obssessive fervor, this game (starbound) was totally released into open-ish beta the other day (you have to purchase it to get access to it). Anyone else got it? We could totally play!
  20. The plan is usually about a week or so, but generally lasts until everyone gets bored of it. Nope! It's all just for fun, something we do around the holidays every year here.
  21. It's an ancient tradition mired rich history and folklore and scores of fanatics who go on about what a joyous time of year it is! (or we just made it up a couple years ago. Ya know, whichever!) Happy birthday peter!
  22. Yup, it's me I've been around, more in a lurky spam-delety capacity. Been busy with work and other personal life changes (nothing bad), so I just haven't had much time to waste around here.
  23. Happy ookla the mokovial, everyone! Another year has passed and it's time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the end of the year! For all you new people: Every year around here we celebrate "Ookla the mokovial"! A local holiday rife with its own traditions, practices, and holiday decorations! More realistically, though, it's a holiday we made up to honor Peter Ahlstrom, Brandon's assistant (He used to go by the screen name Ookla the Mok on the TWG forums). It also happens to coincide with his birthday, which was totally on purpose and not an accident in any way! To celebrate, we generally rename ourselves to "Ookla the ..." where you fill in the blank with whatever! And usually update our profiles to match. Sometimes its fun to try and guess who is who!
