Interesting bit of info about Aethers from a new WoB
Oltux72 replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Aether of Night
Now I am being confused. If they are pre-Shattering, how is a Shard supposed to influence the Initiation? Whimsy seems really ideal for the kite magic story. Like you start a kite in a thunderstorm and Whimsy gives some random magic ability for an arbitrary amount of time and/or number of uses. Or if Whimsy feels particularly whimsical, you'll be charcoal. Brandon on the Aether world This suggests that there is an original Aether world with an associated number. And this confuses me. Doesn't an associated number mean an associated Shard? But they are pre-shattering? A Shard settling on a world with a fully developed pre-shattering magic system? Why? What then is the difference between an aviar and an aether? -
Thaidakar - Deity of the Ghostbloods?
Oltux72 replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, he is capable of that. It wasn't how he operated back then, but if he considered it necessary he'd do it. The longer I think about this the more interesting hearing the reason that made him go that far sounds. I want a Secret History 2. -
Yes, but in which state? Venli had another view: That also explains why Odium did not just get rid of the insane Fused. They made his thunderclasts. Yes. And that is the point. Thet were there and moved around in Spren form That is the point. You are trying to explain an ability all of them have with a specific surge.
-
What is the evidence that this is his Surge operating at all? in the scene with The Nine we learn that all Fused can voluntarily discorporate. We have no idea what they leave behind we already saw Fused in spren form in Oathbringer as they were waiting to animate Thunderclats they did move from Braize to Roshar in the olden days somehow they do stuff on Braize. That must involve moving around.
-
If that was the problem the obvious and unrisky option was to literally do nothing. Within a few decades old age would have solved the problem.

Well, was Kelsier tied to Scadrial? No, not initially. He was tied to the Well of Ascension. When did that cease? When the well was emptied. So you want to assume that the linkage to the Well and the link to the Scadian system were two independent phenomena? Are subject to the oathpact Usually cannot even leave Braize. Their movement is artificially limited. It tells us nothing They built Nightblood based on alien precedents. They must have been able to travel centuries ago. Then we should read Brandon exactly Invested with something that's tied. Something is added to you that is tied. You yourself are not tied. So the Ire built a device specifically against Threnodite Shades, put troops on their border and trained their troops to recognise Cognitive Shadows correctly, just to guard against an unprecedented eventuality? Odium would demand a Fused he could not get off world to do precisely that? Ehm. That is exactly what he said. Sel is the exception. Now Nightblood can be moved. People with huge numbers of Breaths can travel. God metals can be moved. So what does not work? Primarily gaseous Investiture not from Sel.

Relies in which sense? Of course the pipes have to end somewhere. But that does not explain why the Dor can be pumped, while Stormlight cannot. The Fused went from Braize to Roshar in prior Desolations before the Everstorm existed. Among the Cognitive Shadows we have seen or heared about the vast majority can travel. the Returned the armies of Threnody the Ire guarded against the Shade in Nazriloff's gun the future Dalinar who would lead Odium's forces out into the Cosmere Among those who cannot travel we have those who are subject to the oath pact the Heralds the Fused It is unclear whether they could leave even if they were perfectly normal corporate beings. In fact we have one single example of a Cognitive Shadow being pulled back due to its nature. One: Kelsier Do we really want to build a theory on one unambiguous example against numerous counterexamples or find out what is exceptional about Kelsier, such as being generated in a perpendicularity?

Hi, for the purposes of the Coppermind I am looking at the various lights for use as duels for Surgebinding/ And it seems to that from the text we know far less for sure than we think. Radiants can use Stormlight Fused can use Voidlight Venli can use Stormlight and Voidlight Lift can use Lifelight Bearers of Honorblades can use Stormlight Is that really all? That Navani can use Towerlight is conjecture, isn't it?

Does the article on Surgebinding need a major change?
Oltux72 replied to Oltux72's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Yes, sorry. I have started on it and somebody needs to start. Yes. That omission triggered me. OK. I suggest I make a first draft, cutting the stuff that needs to go to Knight Radiant out, so that we have a clean article specifically about Surgebinding. Splitting this up into clean articles looks most important to me. Do you agree on that? Yes. Looking through this article and thinking about what we really know as opposed to conclude is surprising. And there are almost no WOBs on the new stuff. -
In light of RoW and Brandon's latest podcast, it looks to me as if the assumption that the Knights Radiant are the main example of Surgebinders needs to be dropped. In fact, Yelig-Nar should also be mentioned. What do you think? Is there a way for me to post a draft for review, like a sandbox?

Does Renarin swear oaths? Is that the true reason they feared her, that she breaks Ishar's limitations?
-
But he didn't. Ruin played him for a fool. Again, he didn't. He got beaten to a pulp and victory cost him Vin. It looked to me like his most important lesson was to never again to be in a situation where he did not understand things.

I very much doubt his wishes are relevant. The alternative is being a blind, defenseless man, whom many dislike and to be known for being god's enemy. There are less painful ways of suicide.

A regular Breath always has the Identity of its last bearer regardless of its source or path. We know this from the inability to take somebody else's Breath out of an object. You see, here we are entering circular reasoning. We have no evidence a Cognitive Shadow is held back due to being a Cognitive Shadow. The only entities we know are held back are Kelsier, Spren and Heralds. Heralds are subject to the Oathpact Spren are a part of Roshar Kelsier was kept going by Preservation's Investiture In other words I can see no proof that an effect other than Investiture being bound to a place by Identity exists. Now we may ask, why could Nightblood leave Nalthis? It should be bound to Shashara. That gives us a correlation. Nightblood - Shashara: dead Dor - Dominion & Devotion: dead Seons - Dominion & Devotion: dead

Well, no. I am sorry, but that is not a logical conclusion. We merely have learned that the Spren agreed to an emergency measure. That does not tell us who or what caused the emergency in the first place. If you have a fire on a warship and an officer orders compartments to be sealed off and flooded, whoever caused the fire is still responsible for the casualties caused by containing it. The old explanation was always transparently bogus. It could not explain that the Knights Radiant came to this decision as a group. There is a theory that Melishi is to blame. Maybe. I would not call this theory well founded on evidence. Nevertheless the idea that the danger may be rekindled by reversing the Recreance has at least some plausibility.

Unlike Rayse Taravngian knows that Sja-Anat is a traitor. Jah Keved Their kings is not dead, as the treacherous Alethi reported, but ascended to a higher plane. And he apparently can grant arcane powers and immortality. I wouldn't worry about the Iri primarily.

[ROW Spoiler question] Who all can accept Oaths??
Oltux72 replied to athosdebro86's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Now we are getting deep into philosophy. And into very dangerous areas. The Cosmere by design has entities without free will. Nightblood is a prime example. He cannot even think that he might not want to follow his Command. So aside from purely practical considerations of what happens if The Sibling decides to dedicate himself and Urithiru to chull breeding, is that possible? And given the purpose of Urithiru is it honorable? Indeed. That implies that Cultivation would let Ishar tell her what her job is to be. That I have trouble seeing. -
[ROW Spoiler question] Who all can accept Oaths??
Oltux72 replied to athosdebro86's topic in Cosmere Discussion
No. Though in case of the Cosmere, partial creationism is the only sane explanation. Adonalsium created the Singers and Honor and Cultivation created The Sibling. -
[ROW Spoiler question] Who all can accept Oaths??
Oltux72 replied to athosdebro86's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The obvious counter is that The Sibling, like Nightblood, was created as a tool. The whole contrast makes me doubt Honor's ethics. -
So you think SA#5 is going to be the Truthwatcher book? Yes. And I want to see what happens when they tru to use Voidlight, Towerlight or Warlight.

[ROW Spoiler question] Who all can accept Oaths??
Oltux72 replied to athosdebro86's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I am afraid I have to doubt that there is a personality behind those acceptances. That is because oaths are not specific to the Knights Radiant. Who accepts the oaths Shards make? Who decides on the term of the oathpact? It looks to me like assuming a personal instance here multiplies entities without need. Ishar constructed something based on Bondsmith abilities when he imposed the oaths on the Surgebinders. That decides. -
Also: The Aether world is based on the number 12.

In the interest of science we'd need to dissect The Lopen. I doubt he'd agree to that, so our understanding of the Arcane Arts is delayed. The Rosharans know hands. The hand used to be functional. Arcane arts can reveal the past. There was another hand to mirror. It is likely that the Rosharans know how mammalian reproduction works anatomically. On a genetic level? I doubt that. If the genetics remain unchanged, you'd get atypical gametes. These are unlikely to be viable. And how would an X chromosome corresponding to a Y chromosome look? It never existed and there is no algorithm to tell how it would look like. Basically that is made unavoidable by Sel. Ethnicity is an objective reality in the Cosmere. Nor can you expect magic to produce results aligning with any conventional politics. Though I appreciate the irony. On average, if you compare large groups. But an individual? Horneaters and Herdazians can hardly be called ethicities. If you have extra organs, you are a subspecies. Possibly. If that is a spiritual attribute at all. No gem heart -> Nothing to keep a Spren in -> No Spren -> No Form (a. k. a. Slaveform). And in that form you likely lack the mental faculties to do anything about your state. A Y chromosome is a reduced X. It has its peculiar shape because a lot has been lost. Chromosomes all look like Xes. By using only the genes from the remaining X. That is the deep reason Conditions like hemophilia are spread through the female line by mothers who themselves do not suffer from the condition. Whence does the healing create a chromosome? Some alternate reality?
