Is it the investiture itself that is programmed to action?
StanLemon replied to Trusk'our's question in Cosmere Q&A
This is more or less how Brandon described it too -
He likely wasn't under Ruin's influence. It can be argued that because Ruin, like all Shards, is technically everywhere and is the Shardic source of Hemalurgy that he could imbue his Intent any time metal pierced a bind point in order to create a Spike.
-
Leeching seems to only absorb active Investiture rather than Investiture that is inherent to an object. This is shown in BoM when it sucks out the charge of a magic gun without actually destroying the gun itself. I could see it draining Stormlight from gems that power Fabrials but not do anything to the Spren inside. So I doubt it would do anything to the Shardblade except maybe keep it from changing forms, the same as it can prevent a Blade from being summoned.

Steel Inquisitors better bad guys than Fused?
StanLemon replied to Trusk'our's question in Cosmere Q&A
I agree with Frustration on this. Radiants, especially the main characters rarely feel like they are in any kind of real danger. Honestly, I can't even understand how the Desolations were as bad as they were. Despite the Fuzed claims that they are sooooo much more skilled in their Surges, they aren't very impressive or even shown to be effective for the most part. So far they've just been one trick ponies. Radiants are just straight up more powerful and versatile than the Fuzed. Which is one of the reasons that they fail at being intimidating villains. -
It's always been Brass Soothing and Zinc Rioting. There might have been a line in the first book that could have caused the confusion like when Kelsier says that Pushing metals are the pure elements and Pulling are the alloys which is the opposite of the metals do

Metalmind capacity has seemingly been inconsistent. I think it's because there is still plenty of aspects of Feruchemy we don't know. The Bands are a multitude of Metalminds woven together in an oversized spearhead. That means each individual Metalmind must be a good deal smaller than the spearhead that can be held in one hand. They had way more Investiture in them than any other Metalmind than we have ever seen. So a LOT of power can be put into a very small amount of metal for sure. Even the gold band that Wax grabbed in BoM had more health than Wayne had ever been able to store. Though admittedly he uses his health fairly frequently so he may not be the best example. A better example might be that Wax was able to store years worth of Weight in two Iron bracers at an almost constant rate of 1/4th his body weight. Though we know he did tap it at least somewhat frequently. Some random guesses as to this discrepancy can be address? -Skill level of Feruchemist -Having a lot of a trait (either from Compounding or your suggestion of Tapping a larger Metalmind) creating a 'pressure' that forces it into a smaller metal -Identity takes up a lot more room in a Metalmind than Brandon has implied -Because we've never had a character perspective of them truly 'filling' their Metalmind completely, we underestimate how much can be stored -There's a way to modify the metal to accept more Investiture

This might be one of the best ways I've ever seen someone make note of The Lord Ruler's mentality. Every moment of Vin seeing him has him in one of two modes. Rage or weary exasperation. Even seeing his Cognitive Shadow in Secret History had him more annoyed at his death than anything.

Anyone else not really like the metallic arts?
StanLemon replied to Eternal Khol's topic in Mistborn
I don't think it will show visions like Atium considering it can be misidentified as luck. I've always imagined it more like the luck potion from Harry Potter. A sense of knowing what you need to do. I believe this is supported by the fact that Brandon has compared Hoid's ability to know when and where he needs to be to Feruchemy -
Ambushing a a Fullborn would be mighty difficult. BoM showed that a Fullborn's Allomancy is also insanely powerful. Wax was able to hear people on the other side of a ship as easily as he could the person standing right next to him. And he wasn't even familiar with the enhanced senses Tin gave. Also we have no idea how powerful Bronze is at that level. This is unlikely for multiple reasons. First Ishar had to touch all those Radiants to do that trick, if they are close enough to touch, unless the Fullborn is not taking the fight seriously at all, the Fullborn can kill the Radiant faster than the Radiant can do anything. Also, keep in mind, Feruchemists can manipulate Connection as well. While probably not anywhere near as free form as a Bondsmith. I'd be surprised if a Fullborn didn't have a way to defend.

[Theory] Uncorrupted Truthwatchers Have Foresight Potential
StanLemon replied to Cocoa's topic in Stormlight Archive
Two points of note. Kaladin has used Adhesion to alter air pressure. Dalinar has not done anything like this. And second, the biggest direct use of Illumination we saw Renarin use ended up with an effect very similar Malatium. -

I also prefer Era 2 -
theory Is "Physical Adhesion" even a thing?
StanLemon replied to LewsTherinTelescope's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm not so sure this is accurate. My reading of his pov in RoW made it seem to me that his family being required to take up the Honorblades was a punishment, probably a strongly religion based one, and thus it coincided along with his Truthless punishment. I don't think the Shin truly there was any risk of letting him keep it considering Szeth was pretty confident that they would retrieve it upon his death. -
[Theory] Uncorrupted Truthwatchers Have Foresight Potential
StanLemon replied to Cocoa's topic in Stormlight Archive
Shards have limited control of the powers bestowed in Invested Arts. He might have prevented previous Truthwatchers in the past like how he prevented Bondsmiths from utilizing their full potential. But now that he's dead, it might be a natural ability they can access. Perhaps the corrupted spren merely enhance the ability at the cost of weakening the normal uses of the Surge -
I was referring specifically to Kelsier's problem. Vasher has his original body. Kel, presumably, has his original bones. The Heralds as far as we are aware don't have any part of their original body. They are just Cognitive Shadows that somehow have been given a body. Edit: on a related note, I wonder how far Kel can go from Scadrial. In Secret History he went out a couple of days distance without any real problems
-
I've recently started wondering if Kelsier's problem is less him being a Cognitive Shadow at this point and more him being a Sliver of Preservation. Based on the WoB Quantus posted, it sounds like he already has a decent link to the Physical Realm. But he's now been fundamentally altered by Preservation's Investiture and Preservation is heavily tied to Scadrial. We know Shards have some difficulty leaving the world they are Invested in, so maybe something similar is happening to Kel.

Anyone else not really like the metallic arts?

Personally I just don't get other people's expectations of Era 2. It's a fairly logical progression from Era 1, and it's built more like urban fantasy than high fantasy. Something I was expecting from the moment I started reading it with the wild west setup of the first chapter. Those typically don't have, or at least don't start with, the grand scale of high fantasy works. I also find the Metallic Arts to be far and away the most interesting of Brandon's magic systems. There is just enough vagueness for mystery and surprise but mostly being consistent. The fun part is all the ways clever characters use it in spite of its limitations, and thinking about interesting implications of what each thing can do. -
I could see it. At the same time though I would hope her experiences in RoW would help her think through the consequences as much as realistically possible before pushing through a new revolutionary discover. Presumably something like this wasn't possible at all when Honor was around and had chains around the most dangerous aspects of Bondsmith powers, but now that they are unchained I do think Brandon is going have consequences for that kind of power going unchecked. Even when two of the three current Bondsmith's are the good guys

While I personally don't think that it would be possible, I want to explore this idea. If it is possible, Cadmium would become the perfect Investiture battery. Create a Fabrial combining Rosharan and Scadrian science to suck up and store Stormlight every Highstorm and reverse it to tap the Cadmiummind into gems and you have power wherever you go without worries of it running out when not using it.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, I may be remembering incorrectly. But isn't air resistance caused by friction making it so that the air can't get out of the way in time? Sure there would still be the issue of in front of you needing to deal with the rest of the air but it should be able to easily flow around you
-
Quite true, though I think your asteroid example would require more Stormlight than would ever be practical. Honestly, I'm of the opinion that people don't think about how powerful Abrasion by itself is. I would assume Abrasion could also increase friction as well. Running on air, making the air friction so great as to effectively have force fields. And that's just the beginning. So far there is no confirmation in the books that it can be used that way, but it seems a possibility at least.

But if they can make a Nicrosilmind that can be Tapped and then Stored again without havingthe user's Identity added, what logical reason would they possibly have to not give that same trait to the adjacent metal?
-
I'm talking about Unsealed, not Unkeyed. That Goldmind Wayne got had a boatload of Health that was stored in it with no Identity in it. My guess is with help from an Unsealed Aluminummind. Perfectly logical to me. Unsealed Metalminds already break known established rules of Feruchemy by allowing people without the power to use them. This either implies that any Nicrosilmind that lacks Identity can be tapped by anyone, or they have ways to break inherent aspects of Feruchemy. Unless people can use Nicrosilminds without having to Tap them. Their Identity would lock the Medallions to the user once they were done with them. As this doesn't appear to be a concern for the Southerners, it would appear they can make Metalminds that you can store without adding your Identity to.
-
Which need to be Tapped. So when used they would theoretically be contaminated with Identity. Yet that doesn't appear to be a concern for the Southerners
-
It doesn't, but as they've already broken the Identity system enough that they have Nicrosilminds that can be used and passed around to anyone it's not even a stretch that they have a way to let people store attributes in the Medallions without Identity locking them

Consciousness of the Cognitive Shadow
StanLemon replied to Awaken Returner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This discussion makes me think of the age old question. If you have a ship, but over time you replace every single part and then use the old parts to build a new ship, which ship is the original? In the Cosmere, this philosophical question I think has a conclusive answer, the ship with the Cognitive and Spiritual aspect of the original because people see the ship as more than the sum of its parts. This I think can and should be applied to Cognitive Shadows as well. Despite Lightsong having his memories removed, there were core aspects of his personality that were the same. Kelsier's Shadow in every meaningful way is Kelsier. Even Preservation, Ruin, and Harmony, beings that can see all three aspects of a person, still treat Kelsier as the same being that he was. Heck, Wax technically died in Bands of Mourning and was given the choice of going to the Beyond or back to life. If he wasn't a Cognitive Shadow then, then where do you draw the line between the soul and Cognitive Shadow after death.
