I think her Memory ability is linked somehow to Shadesmar - that's why she can see in her Memory the cryptics as they are in shadesmar, not as their representation in the physical.

Hoid is not a lightweaver, he did a type of magic called "lightweaving", which was practised on Yolen and does not exist on Roshar. The terms are the same, but they mean different thing.

OK, finished reading.... Here are some of the things that I find interesting... * like I said above, Dalinar's chapter has 2xIshar, so there are still chances Bondsmiths are of Ishar #10. This would vindicate me a lot (I think I am the first to argue Dalinar was #10 and bring proofs) * I think it's clear that the radiant in Dalinar's vision was a Dustbringer. Friction and Division. Probably used Friction to move fast in the water. What if the other soldiers were not trainees, but she used Division to somehow empower them? (divide her power among them?) * the glyph written in Dalinar's chamber was written in stone. Can stone act on Roshar like metal on Scadrial? * liespren. Probably because they are attracted to lies. For me it's obvious liespren are not of Cultivation or Honor. They are clearly not of Honor, and are in conflict with honorspren, which I doubt cultivationspren would be. Since cryptics are seen as the lighteyes of Shadesmar, I believe they are of Adonalsium (they have to rule cause they are splinter of the original power of creation). * I wonder if Shallan drawing her spren better would have made it more ... intelligent. My impression is that her drawing "fixed" the spren in the physical, but with a certain loss of ... cognition. Hopefully her spren will develop fast * Interesting tidbits about Ivory... esp. since some (cultivation)spren were "sent" to bond, while Ivory's act is seen as treasonous... Looks to me Ivory is a smokespren or oilspren but with a high dose of Honor... seriously now, I think Ivory is a honorspren. * my initial thought about the writer of the glyph was Szeth... but now I'm sure it was not Szeth - he would not have "desecrated" stone. From the Parshendi reading, I don't think they are that aware to predict the exact number of days to the desolation. I thought that maybe Taravangian's spy did that (and Taravangian would maybe know the number of days). But I like better the idea that Renarin was the one to write the glyphs on Dalinar's wall - since Taravangian's spy would have had a better mastery of the glyphs. Or maybe Dalinar himself, which would be way disturbing. How did Dalinar know what was written on the wall? I thought he did not know how to read or write... * Sadeas seems genuinely affected by the Blade - his thirst for Thrill increased. Can't wait for the next chapters! PS - I'm assuming there will be 10 chapters released for preview, because 10 is the important number.

Dalinar's chapter has Ishar. So I guess Bondsmiths are #10.

Not all council member "surrendered", only the elders.

Dalinar recognized it as (physical) Kholinar, destroyed. And it looked like a "shattering" was coming.

The Plate has Investiture "trapped" inside it - the gems do not "power" the plate as much as "recharge" it. That Investiture *in* the plate cannot be "drain" (except by destroying the Plate, and the Investiture "leaks"). Similarly spren (being splinters) have a lot of Investiture -- but I don't think you can get stormlight from them. Basically they have Investiture in a different "state" (stormlight = gas, the one in plate = ???) -- which may not be used by a surgebinder. EDIT: also, magic does not work on an invested object - so you can't draw from or lash Plates, Blades, etc...

Words Of Radiance Back Cover Questions

So Mr. T knows Dalinar wants to "unite them" ... -
Because there is no proof that Dalinar is in Shadesmar when he's having his visions. My bet is that he's NOT in Shadesmar, otherwise there would be lots of surgebinders seeing those visions.

It screams Dalinar after... something happening in WoR -
Hm, I wonder if Jasnah having the Transportation ability has anything to do with that...

I personally like Sansa, I think she is the hidden gem of the series, and can't wait to see her manipulating her way into having the Vale's army at her disposal

I shall put forward an issue I have talked about before: Who were the radiants in the Feverstone Keep vision suppose to be fighting with? I did not look like it was a Desolation (it was after the Last Desolation anyway)... is it possible that the radiants were tricked to fight in an unjust cause (e.g. the enslavement of the parshendi?) - thus betraying (albeit unwittingly) their oath to the spren?
-
Not this again. Dalinar is a Bondsmith (order #8 or #10), not a Stoneward. In that vision, he sees that Kholinar *might* become in the physical. Single vs. multiple spren: * with the death of Tanavast, it is possible 100% honorspren are either all lost in physical (like Syl was), or are all dead (except those that were lost in physical before he was splintered), or are more reluctant to bond with humans now because it was the human's fault Tanavast died. Whatever the scenario, Syl looks like an outcast of the current spren society. * Wyndle was sent to Lift alone. * maybe some spren "travel" in packs (or maybe just cryptics travel in packs). maybe cryptics don't lose their minds when they travel between shadesmar and physical, so they can do this as often as they want. or maybe spren giving access to shadesmar (cryptics or not) don't need to be in the physical (so we see a pack of spren in shadesmar). Nevertheless, only one spren binds with a surgebinder (Jasnah with the guy with the sword, Shallan with the one who's only voice she hears). From WoB, there might be spren that are a mix between shards. My theory about the chart above is that the 4 corners are pure spren (windrunners pure honor, edgedancers pure cultivation, lightweavers pure cryptics), while the in-between are mixed spren (e.g. skybreakers and dustbringers are a mix of honor and cultivation). I am very curios on more info on Stonewardens spren though before starting to root for my theory

I don't think Jasnah or Shallan have entered Shadesmar "physically". There is no evidence to suggest this.

* As long as Kaladin has Syl beside him, it's improbable he will become a tool of Odium, or be influenced by Odium much. * Dalinar is starting to reject the Thrill, something that probably comes from Odium (Kaladin does not feel the Thrill as well). So I would say that, unless the visions come from Odium-desguised-as-Honor (improbable), Dalinar will not be influenced by Odium much. Plus, Syl is around him a lot, with Kaladin guarding him. This leaves us with Shallan, Jasnah, Szeth. * Jasnah is dangerous because she's a scientist - she can be what Mierin was in The Wheel of Time. * Shallan - she is a "more important" character than Jasnah, she has her own book. And she's pretty dark, I am afraid to find out she killed both her mom and dad with a shardblade. Talking about broken souls, hers might be no. 1 across the nation. * Szeth - he's the obvious choice, but at the end, he's just a very efficient killer. He's on the line, so at some point he will either meet his match and die, or finally get over that stone. Finally, let's not forget about Gaz Anyone willing to bet Gaz will be the one to become Odium's champion?

I don't think body focus is linked with how you use stormlight directly... but I think there are small connections that you can make... I think Moogle's post is worth discussing... * Kaladin's spren is a windspren, zephyr... inhalation requires the movement of air * Jasnah's spren looks like he's coated in oil * Lift is special, so we cannot use whatever is doing... I would be more inclined to say the spren is involved in taking in stormlight ... (e.g. maybe Jasnah's spren moves the shadow towards stormlight, allowing her to soulcast; when Kaladin breathes in, Syl "moves" the stormlight)... Body focus seems more like something to do with your spren, not with how you take in stormlight...

Is it possible that Gavilar's stone contains Midnight Essence? Which can be used to create many things, including the creatures in the vision?
-
It would have been easier if we would have known what exactly, if at all, she soulcasted. I think she did not actually soulcasted, just visited shadesmar and spent some stormlight, without doing anything visible in the physical. I think you can move things around in shadesmar, and not have any real physical effect. I.e. it's just like you have an idea and it slips away for a while (a bead was moved at a distance great enough), then it comes back to you -- so the bead would move in shadesmar, but eventually come back by itself, being "attracted" to you. The beads commanded by Jasnah changed position and created stuff in shadesmar, but I guess the idea is to "tell" a bead to "become" something else, not to "stick" to another bead Hence the effects of her actions were only in Shadesmar. By spending a bit of stormlight, you can make yourself a platform of beads and not "drown". This does not have an effect in the physical, just something to help you out in Shadesmar. I think the more important question is -- where are the spren cities? In "empty" places from Shadesmar? Jasnah seems to have discussed a bit with the spren - and maybe not just with her slick guy with back sword. But for all her talk and research, I feel she is very inexperienced - she is still using the same technique learned in her first trip there... Maybe the spren have not been forthcoming AT ALL with her. I wonder if she knows how to Travel....

3) You have an object containing another object in the physical. In Shadesmar, you have what each object represents. So each possible combination will be another bead. So you have a bead for a chair, a bead for a room containing the chair, a bead for the building containing the room, etc. I wonder if you have something like a bead for a naked human body, beads for clothes, bead for clothed human body (I am thinking about Jasnah and the thief). When you soulcast, you don't change one bead, but all the beads connected to that state - so soulcasting "difficulty" increases exponential, not linear. 2) Maybe air is not an object? Maybe there are some "constants" in all realms - air being one of them? Or maybe it's a mental thing - she is expecting to run out of air, so she is. 1) Sun's, moon's representation is Shadesmar... given that you have no objects there, it should be ... not quite what it is in the physical.

I am willing to bet Amaram has done nothing to Jasnah.
-
Yeah, might be possible.

I think this might refer to the fact that Parshendi used different forms, which were new to humans. Note that until now we've seen Parshendi using non-binding spren. They might not attract binding spren, or they might (resulting Parshendi surgebinders). While spren do seem like sometimes they have a choice in binding humans, it might be possible they might not have a choice in binding Parshendi. Or the Parshendi might not know what they're binding exactly. The parshendi also look to have a kind of collective mind - not exactly, but something's there. So it's interesting to see what exactly happens when 1 parshendi gets corrupted - will he be able to influence all of the community through his (evil) song?

What are you most excited about to see in Words of Radiance
marianmi replied to Andy50's topic in Stormlight Archive
Definitely this is the top 3. 4) More of Jasnah 5) Renarin's spren 6) Shallan + Adolin
