I used a spreadsheet for voting in these games:

It worked very well and could definitely be useful for a rerun of this voting mechanic. The only problem is that it looks ugly without spreadsheet coding, but it's not particularly hard to calculate even without

I was messing around with google surveys for a while. It never occurred to me to just have a public editable spreadsheet. Policing edits might be difficult, but that's something to look into if we ever run it back.

I think a future version would probably have voting options of +2/-1/-2/-3 only, to avoid elim coordination being so effective.

Honestly the mechanic I'd most like to see repeated is penalties for being in the bottom three, rather than voting being all or nothing. Perhaps some sort of priority-based item distribution where your ability to get upgrades is improved by the amount of trust you've earned.

Thanks folks, I had fun running this! Probably the last SE I'll do until the big summer game.

  2. MR76 Aftermath: Fiendfyre

Ministry of Magic Building, Level Nine

“I wonder how many orbs there are.”
The troupe of Death Eater students skulked through the Hall of Prophecy. Their leader shushed them. “Pay attention to the labels. We need the one by Sybill Trelawney.”

Pali was pretending to fence with her wand. “I wanted to fight someone. Why’s it so empty?”
“The Ministry is busy shutting down Hogwarts. The messages you sent while polyjuiced as Dumbledore worked better than expected.”

Sitting atop the leader’s head, the Sorting Hat harrumphed.
Leokadius flicked its nose. “Why’d I have to steal this thing, anyway?”
“Because you let it read too much of your mind.”

Ahead of them, a boy with a red prefect badge waved them over. “Found it!”
“Don’t touch that, Forest!” The student in the Sorting Hat rushed to the shelf. “Only those the prophecy’s about can touch the orb.”
“Then how we gonna steal it?”
“Our Master will aid us.” The leader produced Ravenclaw's Diadem. “Part of him, anyway.”

He used the diadem to gently push the orb off of its pedestal. The mist inside swirled angrily.

@Through the living Wahr, @Through the Living Ink, and @Frozen Mint were Death Eaters!

The elim team has won! To everyone who embraced the new format, who engaged with the setting, and who did their best to solve (some for the first time): thank you for playing! A special shoutout to my IM @A Jo in the Bush and to our pinch hitters who graciously stepped in. And congratulations to the elim team for a clean sweep!

    One more thing...

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

The Death Eater students stood in the Hall of Prophecy, transfixed by the words of Sybill Trelawney as they poured from the orb.
Born to those who have thrice defied him…

Merlin’s crying, I’m the only thing that should be scrying!”
The Sorting Hat jumped from the leader’s head. It landed on the prophecy orb, sucking it into its pocket dimension.

“Give it back!” Pali poked the Hat. “Crucio!
The Hat convulsed, but refused to relent.
    Crucio! Crucio!

“We’ve overused that spell,” snapped the leader. “We’ll have to burn it out. Pestis Incendium!”
A line of fire jumped from his wand. It coiled around the Hat, taking the form of a boa constrictor. The fiendfyre let out a high pitched hiss as it squeezed.

    “THAT’S ENOUGH, CEADACH!”

Into the Hall stepped Severus Snape, flanked by Jarry and Siannain. The students carried boxes of scrolls and file folders.

“What are you doing here?” asked the littlest Leo.
“Dumbledore called it ‘correcting the record’,” Jarry said, making air quotes with his fingers. “I think we committed white collar crime! Are you guys evil?”

“You’ve done well, Ceadach,” Snape said, rolling up his sleeve to reveal a snake and skull tattoo. “I can take it from here, but I need the Hat intact.”
“So the rumors are true.” Ceadach flexed his matching tattoo. “But why are you running errands for Dumb-as-a-doorknob?”
    “Just a pretense.”
“Then you won’t mind if I Avada Kedavra!” Siannain fell to the ground.

Without breaking eye contact with Ceadach, Snape pressed his wand to Jarry’s ribs. “Avada Kedavra. Give me the Hat.”

Jarry fell. The Sorting Hat screamed as the fiendfyre burnt its leather.

“Fine.” Ceadach ended the spell. “Just make sure we get proper credit for our contribution. In think I deserve extra, extra credit.”

    Snape was non-committal.
The Death Eater students eventually Apparated back to Knockturn Alley to celebrate a job well done. As soon as they left, Snape resuscitated the Hat.

    “Are you alright?”
The Sorting Hat caught its breath.

Into peril, we’ve been led like sheep.
The bare truth is darkness taints him.
But not foreseen by the wolf in the deep,
We dare use their own tricks against them.

    GM Thoughts

    Spoiler

–I’ve wanted to run a ranked-choice voting game for years now, so again, thank you for the awesome turnout.

–Results are skewed by TJ’s successful deep wolf. Ink being implicated by TJ’s Obliviate was very funny.

–I liked that Owl Mail revealed the Obliviate on Doc. Players submitted their messages quickly, instead of waiting until the end of the cycle, as I’d expected. I was hoping for an e/v flip where the elim could impersonate the villager to sow confusion.

–It didn’t help that Extra Credit kept getting NKed (until TJ started winning it…), but after the fireworks of C2, the elims didn’t have to worry about any spells.

–I like vote manip that’s unpredictable. Worst feeling as a player is being told you’re being Soothed and knowing your vote doesn’t matter. I was hoping the elims would pull off a self-targeted Stupefy gambit.

    –Elim voting patterns:
    > C1, they didn’t vote for each other either way.
    > In later cycles, they consistently voted -3 for the same person (Coco, then Grass, when Ink was under pressure).
    > Their NKs reacted to Extra Credit wagons that naturally developed; they didn’t do much to vote up someone into that spot, besides maybe Mistfallen.
    > Overall, they voted +3 less often than average. If you squint, there was a tendency to use +/- 1 and 2 votes for e-e interactions.

–Villagers needed to both vote down their suspects and vote up who they didn’t want to be exed. C4 (and the game) was won by elims -3ing Grass and giving +s to Ink, while villagers didn’t + Grass.

–Similarly, not giving out enough positive votes C5 meant the village never had a chance against the elims coordinating. Again, two elim prefects and deepwolf TJ swung things by making vote manip (and Protego) a non-issue at exlo. The elim factional spell had no impact on the game.

–Balance-wise, the game felt fair. There were two 50/50 moments that swung in the elims’ favour. Mint won the coinflip over Qian, and Grass being exed over Ink was close enough that a single villager could have changed the outcome. Part of the reason the elims got a factional spell was to balance the fact that rollover was late at night for the elim team, but late-round flash wagons never came into play. Plus, the village had an extra player and I knew we had enough pinch hitters to avoid inactivity removals from the village.

    The cycle is now closed.

  4. Cycle Five: The Phoenix

The phoenix screeched and shuffled on its perch.
Hagrid stood in his hut, hunched over a basin, scrubbing red stains from his fingertips. “Never seen him so agitated.”
At the table, Dumbledore was counting coins. “Here’s thirty Sickles for a job well done.”

“You don’t usually pay me. You feeling alright, Mr. Dumbledore?”
“That’s right, you’re the loyal hound. You’d do anything for this school.”
“I’d do anything for you, prolly.”
“Then do me a favor and stab the man about to walk through that door.”

    Fawkes squawked irritably.
    “I beg yer pardon?”
Dumbledore raised his wand. It was a crimson stick that bent strangely in the middle. “Imperio.

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

The Man from the Ministry of Magic banged on Hagrid’s door. “You can’t hide from me, Headmaster!”
He held the Drake Fairy by the collar, and tightened his grip as she tried to slip away. Inside, Fawkes was crowing like a banshee.
“I caught this one using unregistered Artefacts! She doesn’t even have the Trace. Let me-”

Hagrid opened the door and thrust a kitchen knife.
    The Man ducked. “Expelliowwww!”
The Drake Fairy stomped on his toe and pulled away. With a mirthful leap, she jumped out of the realm.
Hagrid slashed again, cutting The Man’s ear off completely.
Immobulus!” Bleeding heavily, he tackled the brute, falling into the hut.
There was no one else inside.

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Forest liked the forest. He’d been ecstatic when the Headmaster hand-selected him for this Important Mission.
He consulted the map, squinting in the dim light of sunset. “I swear the route keeps changing.”
He turned left, then left again, and suddenly arrived.

The cave entrance was ringed by stalactites that jutted down like teeth.
    “Hello?-oh-oh-oh.”
As he crept through the darkness, his foot hit something soft. A fluffy creature lay on the floor. Forest felt wool, matted by a sticky liquid.

An enormous presence stepped in front of the cave entrance, nearly sealing it entirely. It sniffed loudly.

A flicker of flame lit up the cave.

Expecto Patronum!” A small voice from outside made the dragon turn around.

Orry stood alone, white light spilling from his wand and slowly collecting into the shape of a bear.

The dragon grabbed Orry in its claws and leapt skyward. Forest heard his screams as he was dropped a hundred feet.

    Twice, for good measure.

  5. Cycle Four: The Snitch

    “Are you nearly finished?”
“I told you, I can’t do it when you’re rushing me.” The banging on the door got louder. “Okay, okay, I’ll be right out!”
Sox rolled up his newspaper and went over to the sink. He could hear two voices in the hallway bickering about Ravenclaw and diadems.
“There’s plenty of other washrooms, y’know,” he muttered as he opened the door.

Outside were two students. One was wearing a familiar brown wizard’s hat.
    “You found the Sorting Hat!”
“The Room of Requirement can be literally anything.” The leader avada kedavra’d Sox with a casual flick of the wrist. “And you didn’t even flush.”

He closed the door and reopened it, revealing an entirely new space filled with shelves of trinkets. He called out to his partner who was dragging the body down the hall. “I need a day or two. Begin the final distraction.”

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

A single firework burst over Hogwarts Castle.
The Man from the Ministry of Magic (four butterbeers deep and counting) had never been happier.
“I’m so proud of you, Vera!”

His daughter flew a victory lap around the arena, holding her golden prize aloft.
Then her broomstick twitched, and rocketed straight downwards.
    There was an audible crunch.

    “I’m shutting this school down!”

  6. Cycle Four: The Snitch

Dumbledore cocked his head, as if listening to a noise only he could hear.
“It seems our worst fear has come true.”
    “Another student death?”
“Worse. An education inspector.” He looked to Madam Hooch. “I need a Quidditch match now.
“But we haven’t had tryouts! And the arena needs cleaning-”

Dumbledore knocked on his desk. Out popped a secret drawer that held an empty bottle of whiskey and an hourglass necklace. “This will grant you a few hours to prepare the pitch. Grab anyone who can fly and make some teams!”

As she opened the doors to leave, a man in black robes stepped into the office.
“Department of Magical Law Enforcement! Administrative Registration Department, Academic Misconduct Task Force! My daughter tells me there’s reason for concern!”
“You must be Vera’s father.” The Headmaster smiled awkwardly. “I was just going to watch the game, would you care to join me?”

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

“These students look forced to be here,” scowled The Man from the Ministry of Magic. “Where’s their fan spirit?”
Sitting next to him in the front row, Dumbledore handed him a second butterbeer.
“You know I played Beater in my fourth year?” The Man shook his head. “Strong stuff! Before the match starts, I just need to ask you some questions.”
    “I’m not sure there’s time…”
“Was there a corpse in your pipes?”
    “Of course that’s not right.”
    “Did Leo actually choke?”
    “Just a practical joke.”
    “Is there a basilisk loose?”
    “No, that’s a mistruth.”
“Was there a fall from a spire?”
“Do you think I'm a liar?”
    “Is there underage drinking?”
“What on earth are you thinking? Of course there is! That’s what turns boys into men.”

The Man clinked glasses with Dumbledore. “I knew Vera was overreacting. You can prove the students are alive and well, I trust?”
“Oh look at the time!” The Headmaster quickly held his wand to his throat. “WELCOME TO THE FIRST QUIDDITCH MATCH OF THE SEASON!”

Hovering on her broom, Hooch threw the balls in the air. The grey wizard pumped his fist. “FLY, YOU FOOLS!” (April fools, specifically)

This is an exclusively roleplay round.

Maybe @Archer used RNG to decided in that case or maybe he decided based on which Obliviate was submitted first?

But it is possible that Coco tried to stop Grass but Grass Obliviate took priority obliviating Doc

Correct, I randomly decide which Obliviate goes first. I resolve all Obliviates in random order, then move on to the next spell type in the order.

  8. Cycle Three: The Astronomy Tower

Azalea’s owl had a knack for being late. She sorted through expired coupons and letters she wished had been delivered yesterday. As she unfurled the last crumpled note, she froze.
“Blimey!” She ran out the door as the note fluttered to the ground.
Help. Second floor girl’s toilets. -Amara

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

“I’ll point the telescope at the Ophiuchus constellation tonight.”
Lamar watched the sunset from the balcony of the Astronomy Tower. Next to him floated Amara, her ghostly form unaffected by the wind.
You know I won’t remember any of this by tomorrow.”
“I know. But I can tell you like learning again.”
I like spending time with you. Marina was-

“Hanging out with the dead, Lamar?” A lanky man crested the stairs behind them. “Quiet as a grave up here. And that view is to die for.”

    I know that voice.”
“You look pale as a ghost, Amara. How long’s it been, seven years? Eight?”
    You should jump, Lamar.
The first-year stepped in front of his sister. “Who are you?”

“Your sister knows. But I guess her memory’s not the best.”
He took my life.” She racked her brain, trying to think of his name. “He was a student. Powerful.
Lamar fumbled with his wand. “I’ll kill you!”
In a flash, it was knocked from his hand, falling a hundred feet down the side of the tower.

    You can’t win.
    “Let me try!”
If you fight, you will die.” She shushed him. “Listen! If you’re murdered here, your spirit will haunt these grounds forever.
“Then I’ll live here with you!”
This isn’t living. You deserve better. You deserve to be part of the next great adventure.

“Merlin’s beard, bird brains take the fun out of everything. C’mon now, I’m dying to curse someone.”
Amara held out her hand. “You’ve been so brave.
Tears soaked his cheeks. “I love you. Mum does too.”
    I know. I know.

    “Ugh, get a room. Avada-
    Lamar and Amara jumped together.

The greenhouse air was thick with humidity.

“Who can tell me the name of this plant?” Professor Sprout held a vine aloft. “How about you, Leonidas.”
    “I’m not sure, Professor.”
She underhand tossed it to him. “Names matter, class! Mine manifested into becoming your Head of Herbology.”

She looked at the attendance list. “Jarry reminds me of a student we’ll have next year. I expect him to be a prodigy plant potter.”
    “Professor!”
“A strong name can be a dangerous thing. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named-”
    “Professor! Big Leo is choking!”

The vine had wrapped itself around Leonidas’ throat, and was beginning to make his eyes bulge.
“See? If you’d known this was Devil’s Snare, you wouldn’t have held it like that.” Sprout waved her wand to unravel the plant. “Was their skin always that blue? Hang tight while I fetch Madam Pomfrey.”

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Garick leaned over the railing, admiring his handiwork. He barely noticed the figure landing next to him, broomstick in one hand, Sorting Hat in the other.
“Hats off to you, Garick. That was novel.”
The older boy grinned, showing his silver tooth. “All inspired by you.”
“About that. There’s an art to storytelling. Do you know how hard it was to lure Azalea into the Chamber of Secrets? That’s a symbolic death. This is crude.”
    “Can I try your broom?”
“I need a newer model.” He swung through Garick’s chest, knocking him over the side. “But this one’s still good for cleaning up messes.”

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Ranch dressing dribbled from the side of Dumbeldore’s mouth. “Too many deaths may trigger an investigation, Pomona.”
    “She said he’ll pull through.”
“She said he’ll probably pull through.” The headmaster shook the crumbs out of his voluminous beard. “I want him sent home. If he dies off school grounds, we won’t be blamed for it.”
    “I’ll inform Poppy.”
Dumbledore took another bite of his sandwich. “And tell Hooch I want a Quidditch match soon. I don’t care who’s on the teams, we just need a distraction from all this nonsense.”

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Azalea!” Amara burst into the pitch-black washroom.
The lights flickered once, revealing a tunnel where a sink once was. Then again: pitch darkness.
    No, no, no, noooo…
The lights came on once more, and this time, she saw a Azalea’s frozen form, locked in a cowering pose.
As she knelt down to inspect, Amara felt a looming presence behind her.
    I love you, Lamar.
She turned and faced her fate.

    · · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

@Amanuensis's characters Lamar and Azalea have died! They were killed by @Emperor Comatose's character Garick! This is not a commentary on their alignments. Those players have been replaced by pinch hitters/transfer students, with @DrakeMarshall subbing in for Aman and @Aeternum subbing in for Emperor.

@Doc12's character Azalea was killed by the elims! They were a Loyal Student.

@Qianweilian's character Big Leo was expelled! They were a Loyal Student.

Cycle Three has begun! It will end on Wednesday April 1st at 20:00 EST.

@Archer if someone is alone in a House, can they self-vote for Prefect? Or does it transfer by default (either immediately or after a cycle)?

If no one votes, it is randomly assigned. The lone member would be elected.

Prefect doesn't transfer once assigned. If a Prefect dies, they are not replaced.

@Through The Living Grass please edit your post to remove direct quoting. You can summarize in your own words only.

    Edit: Thanks

Why would it matter? Hufflepuff would still be out a prefect.

(I don't think this question is directed at me, correct me if I'm wrong.

Your GM only answers direct questions.)

Oh, does that mean that homework overrides Owl Mail?

    Correct.

Don't think too hard about how the flavour interaction works with the mechanics. The in-world explanation is that you're receiving a letter from someone who wrote it while alive, then it was delivered later because owls are notoriously unreliable.

Doesn't prefect selection come before exe? @Archer can you confirm this?

Prefect selection comes before the exe. In a theoretical scenario where someone was elected Prefect and also killed, that House would have one less Prefect.

@ArcherI can still talk in-thread, right?

Absolutely. You just can't use PMs. If you die and someone else gets Homework, you will be able to send Owl Mail next cycle.
