Theory time: Cultivation's "shardic number" is either 4 or 5
Solant replied to galendo's topic in Stormlight Archive
We are getting the series in 10 books, 2 sets of 5 I'm with Cal on this one. I think the numbers are relevant to shard planets and not the shards themselves. Except for the numbers we've seen specifically assigned, most of these seem arbitrary and unconvincing. I feel like we are making theories based on random information. Not criticizing, that's just my opinion. -
The Surgebinder Within (Yet Another KR Quiz)
Solant replied to Mr. Staccato's topic in Stormlight Archive
I guess I'm late to this party. It said I'm 72% Slytherin, but it's going to go ahead and let me be Gryffindor, like my folks. Edgedancer, willshaper, Lightweaver.- 151 replies

I don't necessarily think this is the case, but would we consider a group possessing knowledge of the method of Adonalsium's shattering as having the same power level as a shard? The only thing I can think of is that they consider the prevention of further intervention an "intent", then the 17th Shard is specifically a non shard in just the sense that they have no loyalty to a specific shard. I do think it is interesting that each member we have seen all have power sets from their individual home planets, and I wonder in the end how deep that pattern will go. (A collection of 'magic users' from every shards influence? What would the end goal of that be?) My last thought on this is that the 17th shard is just a collection of Easter egg characters based on Brandon's real life friends, and may not have any bearing on the greater story. I'm probably wrong here.

That's interesting, and I don't think I've seen that one before. I still wonder if it's that black and white, mostly because of Brandon saying there are no evil shards (which I believe). I understand the idea that intent without context can be perceived as evil, as is the case with Ruin. I also understand the idea of intent shifting once filtered through the personality of the vessel. Perhaps Odium has always been Odium simply because Rayse has always been an evil person. Hoid basically stating as much regarding Rayse's character in the letter is what really convinces me. I could be way off, but it feels right to me.

I was under the impression that while that shard is concerned primarily with its own survival, i.e. keeping its head down and doing shardly things, trying not to draw too much attention to itself, the actual Intent of the Shard isn't actually anything to do with survival as much as that it just it's stance regarding the other shards. It could be anything that isn't driven toward conflict. I'm not sure if I'm saying this right. As for the Odium vs Passion argument, I'm on board with it being passion. I don't think he was lying at all when he said that, in fact I'm not sure if he can lie. I think he is just an extreme example of what happens when you have what would otherwise be a fairly benevolent shard and couple it with the most hateful, nasty Vessel you can imagine, and the end result being filtered into the darkest interpretation of Passion you can get. It's hard for me not to think of it in Jedi Dark side/ Light side terms.

I think it will end similarly to the first GotG movie.

It's impossible to say how much of preservations plan was guess work and how much was calculation due to his talent with foresight. In all probability, he knew his end game and saw all the pieces in motion long before we saw the damaged and severely restricted Leras in SH

Much like the way that spren, as individuals, can learn and grow, but ultimately are bound by their spren type to behave in a certain way.

Granted, but you will experience no loyalty from anyone else before your death. I wish for the talent to create the finest meals ever tasted. -
This is more of an idle thought than a full fledged theory, but I've sometimes wondered if there is a correlation between Honor's raving toward the end of his life and the Heralds' insanity, and if so, which came first, and how it plays into the Recreance.

Can Shards be harmed or splintered through conventional means?
Solant replied to Fanghur Rahl's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is the explanation I am most comfortable with, due to the Shard of Solant's Vessels limited capacity for math. Here's my analogy. Ruin, Preservation, and Harmony all have infinite amounts of money in the bank. Ruin can withdraw $500 at a time from his bank, while Preservation can only withdraw $450. Harmony has accounts in both banks, and therefore can withdraw both $500 and $450. Who has the most money? I'm being facetious, of course, but this is what makes the most sense to me. -
Why Oathbringer is so Important [Sibling Theory]
Solant replied to ILuvHats's topic in Stormlight Archive
I raised a similar point a few months ago, and in addition to the points already listed someone suggested that it was possible that Melishi could have simply died before the Recreance happened, sparing his spren from being affected. Alternately, the bondsmith spren could just be powerful enough to not be affected the same way as other spren. Or perhaps the fact that they refused to be made into blades spared them. -
One thing to consider is that space travel offers alternative methods of reaching places previously seen as difficult to reach for the average worldhopper, not to mention ease of shipping goods to other planets vs world hopping (traveling the CR on foot or by ship, whatever the case may be. We know that Scadrial had existing trade routes as early as Era 1). As for the original question as to why the final trilogy in the over arching Cosmere sequence would be considered Mistborn books, even though it is a space opera. It's probably mostly due to the fact that even though we can safely assume we will see technological advancements across the board with the Cosmere by this point, thematically the progression of society from TLR era up through space travel was always meant to be at the core of the greater Mistborn books. I wouldn't be surprised if we were dealing with an almost entirely different cast by that point in the story, with the exception of Hoid. I'm sure we will have full on Cosmere crossover story wise, but most of the familiar names we will see will likely be strictly for nostalgia value (look how much of that we got with Era 2, and that was only a couple hundred years after Era 1!). It's so hard to speculate, seeing how far down the road that will be.

As a side note, I feel as though this is a classic Brandon evasive non-answer, as matter= energy= investiture and all investiture is of Adonalsium.

Is Bavadin directing Trell's actions, even if Trell is her avatar?
Solant replied to Ripheus23's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I admit, I know very little regarding Bavadin and her avatars, but for some reason I had the impression that they were all under her direct control (which doesn't make much sense considering her shard's intent). I had the impression that the presentation of multiple separate personalities was an act on her part, akin to God level lightweaving. I could have misread something somewhere... AU, perhaps? Does anyone know for certain that her avatars are in fact separate entities? I apologize if the answer is obvious and I just misunderstood. -
By this definition, anyone opposing Odium would be considered evil as well

This might seem off topic, but it's relevant to the question of Ishar's motivations, so bear with me, and forgive me if it's been suggested before. Ishar is the Herald of Bondsmiths. Unlike the other radiants, who's spren mimic the honor blades, the bondsmiths identity by the specific high level spren they bond, thus limiting their number to no more then three at any time. As I was reading this thread, I had the idle thought that maybe the bondsmith bond actually mimics the relationship between Ishar and Honor himself. This could explain why bondsmith aren't permitted shards, as honor would not have acted in that capacity for Ishar. Could Honors death have affected ishar so profoundly as to be the root of his particular insanity? Could it be that not only does he believe himself a god, but Honors heir? How would that affect his motivation in regards to Nale and the other heralds?
