Lift uses Lifelight not because she's an Edgedancer, but because this is her boon from Cultivation. Normal Edgedancers use Stormlight to power their Surges, they can't use Lifelight as far as we know. The only person that can use it and generate it is a Nightwatcher's Bondsmith and that position is open for now. It should be possible for a Skybreaker to also bond Nightwatcher and use Lifelight as their fuel, but that Lifelight would be generated more like how Navani and Dalinar generate their light, not how Lift does it by metabolizing food. But your character could have visited Nightwatcher and asked them for the ability to generate Lifelight just like Lift can and Nightwatcher granted them this boon and an appropriate curse. However, in your case an Unoathed wouldn't be able to use any light, not even Stormlight, and won't be able to use Surges. They don't have a Radiant bond with their spren and it's this bond that allows them to draw Stormlight in and use it to power Surges. But with the boon from Nightwatcher they might be able to hold it and get some healing and enhancement effects like Stormlight gives, but with no Surges because they are Unoathed. RoW ch 60:

Brass melts at 900°C so that's the maximum temperature you can tap. More than that would melt the brassminds, which would affect the investiture inside and you probably won't be able to tap a liquid metal that's dripping down or eating into your flesh and you will die. Your Axi (atoms) are protected by the nature of Feruchemy and investiture, so at least you should not get harmed. I don't know that much about it, but if atoms vibrate at relativistic speeds they would probably have to have a temperature of billions of degrees, thousands of degrees is really, really not that hot to make them move near the light speed. As for the radiation emitted, it would be according to the black body radiation, so something in the near-infrared up to the visible spectrum. The cremation oven burns at around this temperature and it doesn't irradiate the surrounding area with gamma rays so a Feruchemist tapping that much heat won't do that as well. I doubt there are any effects like this. Investiture will take care of everything and keep your body normal, but be able to survive those extreme temperatures. Investiture is matter and energy, it's a third state alongside those two and investiture is an additional part of Axi (atoms) in Cosmere. At most it may affect your immune system or metabolism (like F-steel affects metabolism), but invulnerability, super strength and stuff like this are clearly outside of the scope of F-brass, cause that's what F-pewter does.

We don't know it but he was moving super fast, like close to the speed of light kind of fast. He was so fast that the electrical signal moving through wires moved at the snail's pace from his frame of reference and the explosion of the first barrel was basically frozen in time. Even Harmony was frozen. TLM ch 71: Considering how much bendalloy Wayne had, you don't really need to be a Lerasium Mistborn, just having more bendalloy will produce the same effect. With this you can theoretically keep getting infinitely closer to the speed of light but probably never reach it. Bendalloy and cadmium savants can do it. Wayne was already able to manipulate the size of the bubble and make it smaller. Who knows? It's hard to tell how all those things would interact with each other, but with F-steel, F-gold and F-brass you could run very fast. Adding A-bendalloy to it would probably increase how fast you can run, but we don't know how time bubbles would react to running at that speeds with large compression factor - it might be impossible due to reasons explained in the WoB above, even if you make your bubble fit to your body, the air around you still interacts with you in the bubble, thus there is this exchange of energy with the Spiritual Realm that will be problematic. That should work. We know what it is, it's faster than light speed - Metallic Arts can somehow achieve that. I'm betting it's something similar to the Alcubierre drive, made out of anchored time bubbles. Yes, add to it Abrasion to negate all friction. As long as they have Stormlight to heal lack of oxygen. Theoretically yes, but at this point does it really matters?

Cognitive Realm Distance to an Undiscovered World
alder24 replied to dstokes7's question in Cosmere Q&A
I think it would grow even if the planet remains undiscovered. You might not need to know this planet exists at all and as people in Cosmere are becoming aware of the vastness of space, the vacuum itself will slowly manifest more in the Cognitive Realm in general, not specifically between certain locations. That planet might be undiscovered, but there are some other planets beyond this one, which are known and inhabited, so even if you need to be aware of two locations for space in CR to grow between them, this space to this undiscovered planet will still grow. Either way, I think the distance will change, but it won't really be that big of a change. Yes, as long as there is any kind of lifeform on this planet, even microbial one, it will have a Cognitive manifestation. If it's a barren rock devoid of life and nobody knows about it, it will still have something because Shards are aware of it, although it's basically nothing. -
This news is certainly encouraging but I’m not overly excited yet. I’ll wait for that after adaptations are well in production. After all, it’s not the first time Brandon sold his rights and things are happening around movies, but this time it certainly seems very promising and I think we will finally see some movies. I really hope this won’t end like the Wheel of Time, which I honestly don’t even know what happened to after S2. I’m happy to see Brandon maintaining huge creative control over the show and him writing the screenplay, but at the same time I’m a bit worried as writing for movies is vastly different from writing books. Although Brandon is the kind of person who works with specialists and listens to others so I don’t think I have to worry much about it. It sucks however that his schedule is getting overfilled, we’ll probably see SA6 later than expected and I think he won’t have that much time for writing novels in secret (not to mention Rithmatist or Nightblood, goodbye my love). As others have already said, I do hope his adaptations won’t end up being overly sexualized, but violence is appropriate, especially for Mistborn. We did see heads exploding and bodies being chopped to unrecognizable levels, not to mention the brutality of Hemalurgy. I want to see Steel Inquisitors in their full terrifying glory. I love them as antagonists. There will be many changes and deviations from books, but with Brandon in control, I hope it won’t go wrong. I do feel that changing the Atium plot in TFE like he talked about earlier in WoBs will happen as it just works better. We’ll still have to wait years for any big news about this project and everything can happen in the meantime. I remember Brandon talking somewhere that the last Mistborn adaptation got to the point where he was hearing actors read the lines and yet it still got cancelled. That’s why I want to hear some definite announcements first before getting excited.

While Jasnah has proven herself to be untrustworthy, it’s not really that surprising as that is simply a true Alethi way, something to be expected. And Fen did expect Dalinar to betray her and plot to conquer her kingdom in OB all the time. It’s also not that surprising that Jasnah prioritizes her family and kingdom over the Coalition, most people do that, Fen included. Fen has every reason not to trust Jasnah after all she heard, but Taravangian is even less trustworthy than Jasnah, even as a Shard bound by rules - he’s already exploited a stupid loophole in the contract, why would you trust him not to exploit any loopholes he leaves on purpose in the contract between him and Fen? That’s just insanity. Not to mention all his schemes and assassinations across Roshar (I don’t remember if Thaylenah was targeted by Szeth, but probably was), what he did in Jah Keved, his betrayal during the True Desolation and so on. There is no storming way I would trust this man no matter what he promises me. I would stick with Jasnah, who I now know has plans to kill me, but that honestly wouldn’t surprise me that much. I might not like it at all, but she's not a leader of the Coalition, Dalinar is. This can be easily resolved by talking and having Dalinar mediating between us (Dalinar who has become a good friend by now). Dalinar stood alone in the breach in the wall of the Thaylen city, risking his life and facing the entire enemy army and their god all by himself and thus he proved himself to be worthy of my loyalty. He didn't abandon me when all seemed to be lost, so betraying my allies and friends and switching sides to join a god, that ruined my city, attacked it and killed many of my people, a god that’s clearly evil, a person that’s even worse than Rayse, is just not something I would do, even if in the end it was proven to be the right decision to be made for Thaylenah.

I don't think so, even if they willingly agree to place themselves under Cultivation's hands, replacing Connection tying them to Odium seems too much even for direct Cultivation's influence. Such an action would force Cultivation to fight directly with Odium over them and Odium holds his Fused firmly in his grip so he wouldn't allow this. Cultivation didn't change Dalinar's Connection to Odium, just gave him a little push to help him resist it in the future. However she might invest them and change the way they work as Cognitive Shadows so they wouldn't be reborn on Braize. But that seems like an action out of character for Cultivation, it's still too direct and I don't see any way for her to indirectly free them from Odium. Mistborn spoilers: However, there already are free Fused at the end of WaT. Leshwi and a few other sided with Listeners at the end of RoW and were left alone by Retribution, moreover some other Fused stayed at the Shattered Plains with them after the events of WaT and Retribution seems to not only tolerate that but also allow them to do so. It's possible that Fused were given freedom to decide what to do after the war has ended, but I doubt they were given full freedom.

Trellium is confirmed to be Bavadinium by Harmony, TLM epilogue 4: Nobody tried to burn it. Keep in mind that all Trellium we saw in books was used for Hemalurgic spikes and burning a Hemalurgic spike is problematic. People on Scadrial also believe that you need to be a full Mistborn to be able to burn a god metal in the first place, only Lerasium is different and for that reason nobody probably even tried to burn it at all. Moreover, electrum is an alloy of gold and silver (iirc it's 45% silver), Malatium is probably an alloy of Atium and silver as well (Edit: correction, it's an alloy of Atium and gold, But Era 1 Atium is an alloy of Atium and electrum, thus it contains silver), so silver in an Allomantically viable alloy doesn't disturb the burning of the metal. Rather than disrupting investiture like silver, Trellium physically pushes it away so instead of killing shades and spren, it would probably keep them at a distance and throw them back. It wouldn't be pleasant, it might hurt their soul, yet I doubt it would be that deadly. However we don't really know much about Trellium and how it reacts with sentient investiture, or how it behaves as a dagger and stuff like that. And we certainly don't know what it steals as a Hemalurgic spike, but it does work normally and doesn't prevent a Hemalurgist from accessing powers via Allomancy and Feruchemy - it shows no disruptive effects and it only prevents Harmony from seeing them and taking control over them, but the power still flows from Harmony to them. It works as a normal Hemalurgic spike with some little extra effects.

The implications of Dalinar's decision.
alder24 replied to Windrunner J's topic in Stormlight Archive
A spoiler box isn't needed for WaT content. There is no such a thing as Spiritual Gravitation and Spiritual Adhesion is only available to Bondsmiths due to the nature of their bond and the nature of the god spren they are bonded to. Windrunners simply can't have it, even if restrictions placed on Surges by Honor are now lifted. The Radiant Orders were specifically set up by Ishar and Honor to each have certain abilities like we see in books and the spren can only give those Surges they are manifestations of - this won't change now. However, something happened to Syl after the Stormfather died and Retribution was formed. We don't know what it was, but it's possible that she is becoming a new replacement for the Stormfather, thus becoming a god spren like he was. This will definitely have some ramification to her bond with Kaladin and it's possible he might gain new abilities or even shift orders. We will see in SA 6.- 7 replies

The Father Machine consumed only those who had a shared Connection to the nation of Torio and Virtuosity and only those people became food for the machine. Nomads outside of Torio survived and later rebuilt civilization because they didn't have this Connection the Father Machine needed. Nightblood and the Father Machine don't share any Connection so the Father Machine wouldn't be able to consume it, although it would probably recognize it as a threat due to his high level of investiture (just like it did with Hoid and Yoki Hijo) and would try to manipulate his memories at most - but Nightblood is insanely invested so it's possible the Father Machine won't be able to do anything to him. Nightblood eats only what touches his blade. The Father Machine spit all those half-eaten souls out as the Shroud and unsheathed Nightblood would start consuming it - until it gets full, falls into a food coma, leaks investiture and starts consuming again until it once more falls into a food coma. Nightblood would be able to consume the entire Shroud, but it would take a long time. However the Father Machine is not the Shroud, it just manipulates it, so unless you drop Nightblood right on top of the machine, Nightblood won't be able to consume it. In that case neither would affect the other. Nightblood would also consume Nightmares, they are just the Shroud given form.

The investiture leaking from Nightblood is corrupted and it's a mixture of many different types of investiture he consumed in his lifetime - Breaths, Stormlight, souls etc. We don't know exactly what happens to investiture that Nightblood consumes, how it changes its identity and connections, so it's really hard to say what kind of investiture is leaking out of Nightblood. The only thing we know is that it's unusable in its current form. You might be able to trap some of it in a gemstone, but it's still corrupted, you need to uncorrupt it and convert it to a type of investiture that a Radiant can use. Not to mention that it's probably keyed to Nightblood, so you would need to unkey it as well. It's a hell of a work when you have Towerlight and Warlight at your disposal, Warlight probably can be used by Radiants without any problems, those in Urithiru can just split Towerlight into Stormlight and carry it out.

He was not insensate, that's why he killed them all as they made the mistake and came for the broken, which woke him up. He was consumed by madness but not stunned in a way emotional Allomancy does it. Because of their madness, Heralds are more susceptible to emotional Allomancy than others - Nale including. Kaladin is too fresh of a Herald, wasn't tortured for thousands of years, wasn't affected by his status of a CS, so he didn't developed cracks in his soul like other Heralds (but he still have them as we all know how much emotional baggage he has) and due to his high level of investiture and lack of cracks, he might be immune to emotional Allomancy, unless extreme levels of powers are used. Honestly, if you can't stun a Heralds, you either need another Herald to strike them down, or use some crazy complicated plan to hit them at all, which most likely wouldn't work anyway. Maybe a steelrunner compounder with lots of speed would be able to hit them faster than they can react, but you need the same amount of attribute Marasi used in BoM just to match their top speed so you would need even more to do it. Heralds are the best fighters in Cosmere and their skills are so fine tuned for fighting that no other can rival them. Trying to fight them is just a bad idea. Kaladin showed in his fight with Nale that the way to defeat them is to provide them with a therapy session, therefore the best course of action is to send professional therapists that would persuade that Herald to stop their invasion and bring them back from madness (with F-duralumin so they can form Connection with them which would help with making them trust you). Trying to find a way to help their soul and mind heal a little bit would also yield better results than trying to fight them although this would be probably harder then just killing them as nobody really knows how to do that. Starting with gifting them unsealed copperminds is a good idea, they can store their memories and that would stabilize their sanity, but what to do next is impossible to tell. You're not using future sight to predict his moves, you're using it to automatically place a spike that would remove his Connection to Oathpact/Honor. With that amount of fortune, you would see all you need to see, like Eland did at the end of HoA. But to do that you need to stun them first so they can't react for that one single second it would take you to do that, without that you won't be able to spike them. Speed bubbles can be shaped at will and anchored to a Slider if you are a Savant. Ghostbloods have enough cash from selling aluminum that they can buy enough bendalloy to feed it to their Slider everyday and make them into a Savant. Marasi did that with just what the Bands had stored. You would definitely need compounding to get that much speed, more than what the Bands had, but that wouldn't require a much larger metalmind considering that the Bands consisted of 16 metalminds merged together.
-
That's why you need to stun them with emotional Allomancy first and immediately kill them. Heralds are op and you can't win a fight against them normally, unless you throw at them dozens or hundreds of metalborns and overwhelm them - but that won't kill them permanently so they will be reborn. The key here is using future sight and fortune to aid with spiking, burn Atium or electrum together with duralumin and maybe even tap F-chromium on top of that for more fortune. With you being literally dragged into the Spiritual Realm, you will place the spike in the right place and will steal the right thing. You're sidestepping the knowledge by drowning yourself in fortune.
-
That’s probably one of the hardest tasks Kelsier could give outside of killing Hoid or a Shard. Heralds are op but they regularly died during Desolation so you can definitely get them despite their Surgebinding, skills, speed and Atium-like powers. You definitely need to surprise attack them as a direct frontal confrontation gives them an advantage. Sneaking into their camp with a team of assassins will be a challenge. The best thing to start the fight with is to use nicrosil enhanced emotional Allomancy specifically targeting emotions related to their madness. They may be highly invested, but their minds are broken beyond repair, providing plenty of cracks in their soul for the emotional Allomancy of that strength to stun them for a few precious moments. Then use F-steel to close the distance and strike fast. There are only a few options I can think of that would permanently neutralize a Herald: Nightlood - do I even have to explain? Getting it from Szeth might be problematic, but if a Herald is insane like this, he might be willing to cooperate. Raysium dagger - either trap them permanently in a gemstone (as noted previously, the newly restored Oathpact and Honor having a Vessel will probably prevent them from fading like Jezrien did), or inject them with a big dose of anti-light to kill them. Hemalurgy - this might provide the easiest way to kill them while they are stunned. Use A-electrum or A-Atium to aid with spike placement (WoB) and then spike out their Connection to the Oathpact. With this the Connection will be fully gone, not just severely weakened like it was after Aharietiam and because the spike will most likely go through their heart, they will also die and won’t be reborn. You can also use an aluminum spike to remove all of their powers, but that won’t stop them from being reborn. Spiking out their Connection to Honor would also do the job (per Vasher's words in RoW ch 15, it's this Connection that sustains them as CS), or possibly spiking out enough raw investiture with nicrosil might turn them into a Returned-type Cognitive Shadow and their soul will simply fade into the Beyond on its own. Honestly this is an herculean task and while it’s definitely possible, Heralds are really, really hard to kill. Depending on how the new Oathpact is functioning and when the return is triggered, it might be easier to just kill them and let them be trapped on Braize until their next return - this might make them regain their senses and stop this foolish invasion plan, especially after a few therapy sessions with Kaladin. Killing them will be easy, just a single aluminum bullet to the head will do the job, just like dozens of other ways to kill them. But this is assuming that the Heralds cannot return to Roshar without risking some dire consequences and it seems like Fused aren’t trapped on Braize anymore by the Oathpact, so what exactly triggers their return now is unclear to me. Does their return release spren from Oathpact’s protection, thus Heralds would want to avoid it at all costs? No idea, need more information and Ghostbloods won’t be even able to find anything about it because probably only Ishar knows how it functions now. Btw, Elantrian Shai is programmed to grant you a wish after awakening, so if you ask her and explain how dire is your need to kill a Herald, she would assist you, which would be a huuuuuge help. She could probably do it alone given enough preparation and tools. After all, Elantrians can replicate everything that all other invested arts are capable of, including Bondsmithing (WoB) - she might be able to just remove Herald’s Connection to the Oathpact and Honor, suppress their powers and just kill them.

Yes, yes and yes. He was trying to make both god metals and everyone in the Basin know about Lerasium and its properties as that's written in Words of Founding. The epigraphs from HoA are from the Words of Founding left by Sazed and they talk about Lerasium and its ability to create Mistborn. TLM ch 15: I do believe that this quote is the very reason why Wax was able to create god metals when splitting Harmonium.

Yes and no. Bones are hard to Awaken and on their own require a lot of Breaths. That's because typical Lifeless are cheap to Awaken as they have body and ichor alcohol in their veins. Bones have neither. A set of human bones require at least 50 Breaths to be Awakened, a gigantic animal like Tai-Na would require much more. And if you want to make it into a Phantom, then you need a second influx of Breaths to Awaken the stone/metal itself and make Breaths work like a sinew that will make it move - that's how Kalad's Phantoms work. They are a hybrid between type 2 and type 3 entities. I'm certain you can make Breaths take the function of a spren and make them uphold the naturally too heavy body of the greatshell to prevent it from collapsing (it’s not that much different than Breaths working as sinew in Phantoms), but that would require even more Breaths. Not to mention that metal and stone are really hard to Awaken and you need to have at least 9th Heightening to be able to Awaken it. Awakening something as big as an island is just insanely expensive, I doubt even the entirety of Susebron's treasure would be enough to Awaken a Tai-Na encased in metal. And honestly it wouldn't even do much, it's super slow and you can just climb on it, walk beneath it and start cutting it with a Shardblade and it wouldn't be able to defend itself. Just make normal Phantoms like we saw in Warbreaker, they are way better and practical. Warbreaker ch 46 Yes. You store percentages but those are actual numbers. The more you weigh, the more 30% of that weight is, the more investiture you have to store, the bigger storage you need. 30% of 50 kg is less than 30% of 100 kg.

Does Cultivation exercise influence by blocking futuresight?
alder24 replied to coolsnow7's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, she did have an effect on Tanavast and Ishar's future sight, just like Odium, Renarin, Rlain, Ishar, Moelach, Mishram and all others who have the ability to see the future. Every time someone sees the future, it sends a ripple effect on someone else's ability to see the future, making it much more unpredictable (like Odium couldn't predict anything that was happening around Renarin). It's not like Cultivation wanted Honor to be blind to the true effects of Mishram imprisonment, it's just due to Honor's own shortcomings in predicting the future and others who looked into it causing a disruption, he was unable to accurately predict what was going to happen. Also Honor said in visions that he isn't that good at predicting the future and that Cultivation is better than him. Predicting the future is just hard. As for Kaladin, just being near someone who can predict the future makes your future harder to predict. And because Kaladin often sticks around Renarin or Rlain, they will have a clouding effect on his future, which made it harder for Ishar to see him in his future sight. -
The environment in space is vastly easier to deal with than at the bottom of the sea. There is a reason why only around 20 people so far descended into the Challenger Deep - this reason is the pressure there being 1000x greater than on the surface of the Earth. Shardplates might be airtight but when you're dealing with the pressure difference in the range of hundreds or even a thousand atmospheres, it would implode as fast as the Titan did. I think it's theoretically possible for a Shardplate to survive on the seafloor, but practically impossible due to how much Stormlight would be required. It would probably take a tremendous amount of Stormlight to heal Shardplate fast enough to prevent it from being instantly crushed by pressure at the bottom of the Rosharan sea, so even royal gem reserves wouldn't last long.

Theory: Spook is the Lord Ruler's Descendant
alder24 replied to Qianweilian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Brandon basically keeps telling us in those WoBs that yes, Rashek had kids, but they are not that important and by now half of Scadrial can be considered his descendants simply due to how diluted his blood is. It's similar to how there are millions of people related to Genghis Khan, but just because they are related to the great conqueror doesn't mean they are important now after hundreds of years. If Spook was directly and closely related to Rashek, his Allomancy would be off the charts. Rashek's power exceeded even that of Lerasium Mistborns as he gave it himself using the power of the Well. If Rashek was Spook grandfather or something like that, Spook would be stronger with tin than Eland was. Yet he was a normal tineye. His skill came not from raw power but from lots and lots of practice. And he could practice safely under Clubs protection. That's all. It's possible that Clubs either got lucky and avoided Inquisitors all this time, or he was a savant and could resist their double bronze. Also, even though Inquisitors can pierce Copperclouds, the pulse they hear is faint so they would have to get close to Clubs to sense their pulses. That explains why he wasn't caught by them all those years - he wasn't relying on his copper alone, he had a legitimate business and the crew always made sure to lose anyone following them before going back. TFE ch 30&31: Brandon also confirmed that we haven't seen any of Rashek's kids in books and we've seen Spook parents on pages so they can't be his kids. His kids are more important to the plot to end the Final Empire Rashek once had than to the events of Era 1. And RAFO's don't have to mean that there is some hidden secret there, simply that Brandon is not ready to canonise it yet. I'm more interested in Lutha: -
I do not remember that. He has a wife now and has been living a normal life for six years since the events of WaT. His wife is indeed Jasnah's apprentice (possibly as a Veristitalian), but in epigraphs nothing indicates that he's involved in something at all. He still has Nightblood though, so it's possible he will get forcefully involved in the future because of the sword. Yet Retribution left him alone for so long so it seems he's safe for now. Also he lost his right arm to Nightblood and while he broke his bond with Aux, he said he will search for the dissenters of Skybreakers to bond with. Anyway, he's free from Retribution now as he is no Radiant and even if he becomes a Radiant he can choose to swear such Oaths to avoid falling under Retribution's control or even to avoid getting involved in bigger affairs. Now he's finally free to choose whatever he likes. WaT Epigraphs: Ch 135:
-
What Oath? Szeth's 3rd Skybreaker Oath bound him to Dalinar who's dead, but Szeth broke his Oaths and he is no longer a Radiant. He isn't bound by any Oaths now. He chose peaceful life over war.

Illustration descriptions for missing illustrations
