I didn't say he wasn't invested at all, only that he was avoiding investing in Roshar too much, to avoid binding himself to it permanently. He wanted to be free of Roshar, and once invested heavily, Shards can't easily leave. It was said that Odium's pure tone is now a part of Roshar, where I don't remember, can't find it - but the context was Odium wasn't that strongly invested in earlier Desolations, but now is enough to have his Rhythm permeating everything. So somewhere between the Last Desolation (or even more likely the False Desolation) and the True Desolation, he became truly a part of Roshar just like Honor and Cultivation. I've found some quotes, but it was explained more elsewhere too: RoW ch 69: RoW I-3:

Stormfather - Latest Theories? [SA5 Prologue]

Yes, multiple times in OB and RoW. Ash's reaction tells it was the first time perma-death happened, OB ch 121: And Dalinar saw the Oathpact in RoW ch 47, only one line was broken (Jez) and one was strong (Taln):- 31 replies

Stormfather - Latest Theories? [SA5 Prologue]
alder24 replied to HoidIsAdonalsium's topic in Stormlight Archive
He wasn't that clear, Gavilar believed that SF lied, but: My opinion is that Gavilar was so full of himself that he just assumed certain things (like he didn't believe Restares was Kalak, nor Nale was Nale) and didn't bother asking Stormfather. But Stormfather lied in OB. Yes, explained above, but that wasn't my point. My point was that we've been shown in the very first pages of Stormlight Archive, in prelude, that Heralds can't feel each other regular-death. That's why I don't believe the Stormfaker is Ishar, because he wouldn't be able to feel another Herald dying. Stormfather on the other hand can sense Herald's perma-death and it's not a big stretch to assume that he, as Honor's Cognitive Shadow, holding the biggest piece of Honor, and therefore being tied to Oathpact, can sense that. Stormfather took duties of Honor, like accepting Oaths or creating new generations of Honorspren, it's likely that him being Honor's Cognitive Shadow tied him also to the Oathpact enough to feel Herald's regular-death. But Herald can't feel another Herald dying, even Ishar.- 31 replies

Maybe not. But for me the WoB in my previous post is enough to say that most of the red associated with Odium is corruption. It was stated either in OB or RoW that Odium's Rhythm became a part of roshar in the meantime between the Last Desolation and the True Desolation. Possibly in relation to BaM. But all of Odium's spren are still ancient. Corruption gives him likely the possibility to twist someone else's creation which would require less investiture than just making his own Splinter. Red lightning exists in real life. By corruption I don't mean Sja-Anat did it - she didn't, she only just began to corrupt intelligent spren. Odium personally corrupted spren. He can do that. Even Sja-Anat said that Odium will catch her spren and Unmake them, and if he finds the proof for Sja-Anat's betrayal, he will Unmake her as well (unmaking and corruption are likely similar but a bit different processes).

thinktank ideas A list of possible novel power interactions?
alder24 replied to AirsickAviar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've never seen that, and I can't find WoB like that. There is this WoB that tells you can store almost all your weight: Maybe you confused it with tapping and the effect of diminishing returns which uses part of your attribute to compress it when tapped? The more you tap, the more you lose. You can store all memories in copper. Identity isn't like your true self, it's more like an encryption key that binds "stuff" to you. Identity definitely does something more than being just an encryption key, the way you look like is tied to your identity (not for everyone, so it must also depend on perception - that means spiritual ideal to which you heal might be part of your identity), but probably not something like you're wondering about:- 20 replies

thinktank ideas A list of possible novel power interactions?
alder24 replied to AirsickAviar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wanted to point out that the speed of acceleration depends only on gravitational acceleration g, which is changed by Windrunner only. Thus a Windrunner can reach the terminal velocity faster (which also increases), and that determines the maximum energy on impact per Ek=(mv^2)/2. But a Feruchemist can change mass. It changes his terminal velocity, increasing the energy on impact both because mass is changed and velocity squared is changed too. So the Lashed Feruchemist would accelerate with rate determined by his lashing, but depending on his mass, he can reach greater energy on impact and thus be more effective combo. You're right here. Brandon in the WoB questioned is answering if Wax could nullify a lashing. The answer is no, as Wax can never store all of his mass (F=mg - he can't make F=0) and he can't affect the gravitational acceleration. He will always fall. What Wax can do is reduce his mass to minimum which allows him to reach survivable terminal velocity very fast, and thus survive an impact - but he won't get rid of a Lashing. No contradiction here.- 20 replies

Navani has proven that humans can hear Rhythms if trained. She could hear the Rhythm of Honor and even Odium's Rhythm by herself, and even recognize Raboniel's Rhythms when she was speaking. I think Rock, as both Horneater (Singer's descendant) and Sighted, has an easier way to hear all Rhythms. He doesn't know this is possible for him, but likely with some training he would be able to do that. RoW ch 76: RoW ch 110:

I disagree. Till recently Odium wasn't very invested in Roshar, he relied heavily on corrupting rather than his own investiture. Many Voidspren (like Guiding spren) are all golden in color and look like humans - I think they came on Roshar form Ashyn, with Odium and humans. I've checked it, you're right. He's red and he turns himself into red lightning. I thought he was the same as Guiding spren. Possible. Secretspren are yellowish-white. I'm not denying that his spren aren't of many colors, they are. What I'm saying is those reddish are corrupted, those more golden are his direct Splinters.
-
That's a good idea. I think that might be the case. What's more, Stormspren are red, they are corrupted, and they could be Windspren before. That would make sense. Any Voidspren which are red are corrupted, golden ones are direct Splinters of Odium.

Is the person Trell from White Sand the same as Trell from Scadrial? Trell on Scadrial is at least 1000 years old. I don't think Autonomy can be held by multiple Vessels, at least not on Shard level. Bavadin still holds Autonomy, said in TLM epilogue as Sazed called Trellium Bavadinium (and possible in other places too). Avatars are somewhat autonomous parts of Autonomy and one can Ascend to them, be their Vessel. Avatar can change Vessels. And I think that's what happened - Trell from pre-Rashek Scadrial got "killed" or was retracted by Autonomy and Telsin was going to Ascend to Trell in Era 2.

Not exactly, Stormspren weren't on Roshar, they were in the Everstorm locked on Braize, Venli had to find a way to pull them on Roshar first, RoW ch 86: By the time of WoR the Everstorm was moved by Odium so close to Roshar that Stormspren were being pulled there by lightning, RoW ch 88:

Hmm, I don't believe you. That's something a bot would say. Prove it! Say Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor!

I think that's just either interpretation or perception. Kel is aware that Axi exist and that's why he knows that he sees them. Marsh isn't, he thinks that he sees traces of metals while in truth those are Axi.

I forgot to add the map yesterday, now you can find it in the geography section. Thank you for your kind words Good, I was hoping you will say that. Very similar to Mercury's tilt, which is almost 0. So less than 2 degrees of tilt for Vantlar in "normal" position. Uranus has ~90 degrees of tilt, axial tilt is measured the same for all planets. Because Mercury has almost no axial tilt it literally has permanent shadows regions where temperature drops from 400K to 50K. Here it is a more than 50K, because Vantlar has an atmosphere, Mercury doesn't. There are a very small polar circles. I was also thinking of making it fluctuate very fast, in a period of 100 years because of the recent destruction of Ortagon - Earth's axial tilt is changing by ~2 degrees in a 40000 year cycle. But that's not canon for now. No, the ring system is along the equator, and that's perpendicular to the sun like on Earth. Bun on Vantlar sun always is above the equator, it doesn't go to the tropics. And the ring system has a thickness. Saturn's rings are around 1 km thick. Here they would be thicker because they're made out of rocks, and there are more lager pieces of rocks orbiting there, larger even than 1 km (notably core pieces). Hmm, yes. I didn't think of that. Either way, the Moonfall ridge is covered in shadows. Either entirely or just half of it. Almost! Almost no poler circles! There are several pieces of core. They're on orbit closer than geostationary orbit (~36k km) and most are closer than Moon-Earth Roche Limit (~9k km - those would fall on Vantlar, those above this limit would speed up, extent their orbit and form new moons form rings present there) but not closer than around 7k km (no idea if those are correct numbers, they feel right base on my Roche limit math). They orbit faster than Vantlar rotates (because they're belove geostationary orbit), and complete their orbit several times a day. They're more similar to ISS, which orbits 16 times in a day but not that fast. If you look at Satrun's rings, in the gaps between rings there are some very small moons, dozens or hundreds of kilometers wide. That's something like that. Many pieces, with different speeds making several orbits in a day. They're quite fast on the sky. Valor made it on Ortagon and left it there. He made the cycle work and bound it to Ortagon. The cycle is quicker than that of Atium, no 300 years of waiting, it happens almost instantly (in less than a year) Oh yes, interesting questions. It would be good to have answers to them. RAFO! There is lots of Valor raining down - not alone, but fused with rocks and debris in rings. Depending on the size of debris, smaller pieces will implode in the atmosphere (like Chelyabinsk event), but because they have much lower speeds and there is Valorium in them that absorbs lots of heat, many reach the Moonfall Ridge. Valorium found there is in small pieces, nothing big at this point, but that depends on the area and the size of the debris - there are still 1 km of meteorite falling with large amounts of Valorium in it. And yes, it survives all of this, somehow. Oh you've spotted it! YES And yes, it can be dangerous It doesn't. That's why you don't swing this sword at people or objects and that's why the ship's design must place it inside, to prevent water from deforming it. There is a layer of wood, maybe Valorium and another layer of wood. Ships aren't made entirely out of Valorium, just some parts. I haven't decided if they work like a fabrial/Mehwish ship - a Valorium core with wires of brass transmitting heat to that, saving the ship and its crew from overheating, or just a thin layer of sporadically placed stripes on the bottom of the ships (inside the ship), and around its decks. Wood. Not all waters are boiling. It depends on the region. Those in places where lava flows into oceans are boiling, but somewhere in the middle of oceans they are only "deadly hot". It's not pre-Catacendre Scadrial level of hot, but still too deadly for humans (they can chew Valorium to reduce their body's temperature). Normal trees grow on poles. Wood won't self-ignite on those waters and on ships it's coated in a protective layer of something. I don't know how ships in real live are made in details. No, because it's like the Atium cycle. Atium after being burned didn't return to Ruin but to the Pits where after 300 years it reformed. Here, because it was bound in the same way, it returns to Ortagon (or at least what's left of it), where it reforms quite fast (not literally instantly but less than a year). I will answer this as Khriss: That's the most likely explanation. I doubt however that they existed there in the same form as today. The departure of Valor or destruction of Ortagon must have changed something in their nature to make them physical, this aggressive and maybe even almost mindless. However those are only speculations. Khriss: Unknown. Khriss: That's another likely possibility. As we know, investiture left alone tends to develop sentience on their own. I'm afraid we might never know and the only entity that knows it, Valor, refuses to answer my letters. Because I'm not a biologist Somehow Siberian Traps killed 80% of marine life forms during Permian extinction and it raised the water temperature "only" to ~40 degrees C (and destroyed Earth's ozone layer) on average (the highest ever seen in the geologic record). Marine life just didn't have time to adapt. Plus the initial Late Heavy Bombardment-like period evaporated lots of water, killing almost everything living there. Hydrothermal vents release lots of minerals, which are needed for microorganisms, those are the food for bigger organisms, and those are eaten by fishes or something. Essentially there is a food chain established around them. Here everything just collapsed in a single day. It would. But people don't have technology to look that deep. They don't know what's down below. Little to no sunlite - it hits the ground on such extreme angle that the perpendicular rays are spreaded over large area: There are also areas with snow and ice with very low temperatures, air convection cools the area too. And they are most distant from rocks falling from the sky and volcanos and flood basalts, so heat disperses before getting to poles. Temperatures there are still tropical, but not inhospitable. The global average temperature is less than 100 degrees C. Oh boy, I know how you felt now, when I was poking holes in your ideas Because. I hope that works Khriss: Valor didn't want to, didn't care, or didn't make perpendicularity there. Humans origin on Ortagon is still unknown, they'd decided to settle Ortagon, not Vantlar for some reason. It happened at the same time as Odium fought Ambition on Threnody, which was at the same time as Valor leaving the system. As soon as Valor left it happened (it doesn't mean he is responsible - it's unknown). Very early after the Shattering. Hmm, I was thinking more silvery but transparent. They aren't easy to spot. Khriss: Unknown. Possible bigger Cognitive presence is what's appealing to them. Or maybe they used to be sapient and they're longing to recover it? Most people who encounter Spirits are killed by them, not bonded. Earth before Homo-species evolved. Earth without humans. Oh boy. Names. My arch-nemesis. Let me think... Khriss: because of the unknown origin of humanity on Vantlar, it's unlikely that they came from Ortagon (as there was around a 1000 year long period of total inhospitality on Vantlar so they couldn't just switch to Vantlar). Therefore the early settlers arriving in the system would know only the rings and debris falling from the sky, and wouldn't know that something caused it to happen in the first place. Because of that native population doesn't have any name for the destruction of Ortagon, and scholars of Silverlight call it boringly "the destruction of Ortagon" sometimes adding "in the Vantlar system" for precision. Side note: I hope that our naming standards for stars and planetary systems persist, as there are some in Silverlight who want to use some weird catalog names, where Vantlar would be known as SIC 8462926. Very poetic indeed. Joke, that's how we name new stars... Legends, myths, religions, depictions in art, Cosmere Connection and perspective or some other Cosmere explanations. Or maybe they don't know, and that's why they called the pile of rocks a dragon? Or maybe there is a religion that worships the dragon on Vantlar? Khriss: It's very likely there was a perpendicularity on Ortagon as it was inhabited by a Shard. There isn't any record of people from Ortagon escaping the moon. We must assume that everyone living on Ortagon was killed by its destruction and they had no time to even react to it. Less powerful than what Valorium can give them. Dor is liquid, less concentrated than a solid god metal. But you can have a jar of it, which would last for much longer than a single bead of Valorium. Khriss: They look the same as they naturally look when they're unbonded, visible to everyone. Nobody tried to summon it as a Shardweapon, it's unknown if that's possible. But they're Splinters, Seons are Splinters too and can be made into Shardweapons, so maybe Spirits too? They are already partially acting like a Shardblade but this nature isn't well understood for now. Keep in mind, people living on Vantlar are technologically in Early Modern Period, with access to gunpowder and with the "pike and shot" tactic. To fight with Spirits they sometimes create Valorium bullets, which aren't very effective for obvious reasons, however they rely mostly on Valorium rapiers, sabers or even pikes - weapons commonly used in the Early Modern Period. https://inkarnate.com/ - "free" tool, that has volcanoes and lava ground locked by subscription It's an equatorial ridge. This map is a Gott Projection - it shows only the northern hemisphere with the north pole at the center, ending on the equator, that's why the map looks like a circle. The Moonfall Ridge is on the equator. I didn't know a Gott projection before you asked, I thought it would be cool to make a map projection, similar to azimuthal equidistant projection that ends on the equator, not the south pole. Uff that was a lot. Good think you didn't nitpick "where is the ash-covered atmosphere"

thinktank ideas A list of possible novel power interactions?
alder24 replied to AirsickAviar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Unfortunately, I'm the guy that focuses on realism Practically impossible. Allomantic iron/steel push is limited in range, Vin was able to push only as high as Luthadel's walls, likely around 30 ft height. And to pull an ore from the ground, you would need to be heavier than the ore you're pulling, rocks it's attached to, and all of the weight of the ground that's laying on top of the ore. Ridiculous amouts of weight that you would need to tap for a long time. With Iron Feruchemy you can become that heavy only for a split second, no longer. Might be somewhat possible with the Bands and duralumin burst. Allomantic bronze senses only kinetic investiture, investiture that is actively being used. It can sense Stormlight but only when it's inhaled or used for Surges. They can sense spren, but only when it's being summoned as a Shardblade. Fused use aluminum weapons, some with Raysium that convects investiture into a gem. This doesn't damage investiture, just traps it in a gemstone. Piercing a coppercloud is hard, and every Misting is now of the same power level, they can't pierce copperclouds. Detecting off-world investiture with A-bronze is hard, and might require some additional steps - it's hard for Seekers to detect Feruchemy, and it requires training. F-iron manipulates only Feruchemist's weight. While Malwish Medallions seem to manipulate ships' weight, it's likely that's only one way power - you can store it, not tap it. So a Windrunner can't increase the weight of an object he is lashing. But a Feruchemist lashed by a Windrunner won't work that well - Feruchemist changes his mass, Windrunner changes his gravitational acceleration. F=mg - m is changed by a Feruchemist, g by Windrunner. No matter the mass, they would fall at the same speed (ignoring air resistance and terminal velocity). But changing mass would affect energy so it can be dangerous (more to Feruchemist which would get killed by an impact). You don't need Feruchemical iron for Windrunner to get somebody to space - just lash somebody with 1g upwards and they would soon get into space. Windrunner can stack multiple lashings at once, they can multiply their acceleration to get into space faster. No need for F-iron. And once in space, they can lash an asteroid with 1g to collide with your enemy on Roshar's surface. Easy. Yes, you can steal the connection to spren with Hemalurgy. But once stolen, spren can break the bond leaving you with no powers and no bond. You need to steal both the connection from the Radiant and a power from the spren (spiking a spren is hard), to get Radiant's powers. 2 spikes are needed. You can steal Elantrian's power, also 2 spikes, one for connection to Elantris, second to steal the transformation that makes one into Elantrian. Burning Atium or Electrum, or anything that gives you access to SR, can help you with spike placement. Atium is an overpowered combination with everything. Air drag actually doesn't care about mass, nor weight, only about surface and velocity. But to reach terminal velocity (which is based on mass) force of air drag pointing up, must be the same as weight (force of gravity) pointing down. So Feruchemist changing his mass, changes his weight as a consequence of F=mg. And what could it do? It's sand, it can't move. It's also a rock, 9th Heightening needed. It's still invested and it would still resist investment. I don't think so. Not unless they're unkeyed. Fabrial works because of spren, spren needs Stormlight, not just any investiture. Fabrials doesn't even work with Voidlight, they needed to corrupt spren first for them to work with Voidlight. RoW ch 49 RoW ch 61: Skaze, Seon, Spren and even Nightblood are all Splinters, spren. The same thing. Unlikely to form a bond with another spren, but still possible. Herald Nale, who is a Cognitive Shadow, not so far away from being a spren, could form a Nahel Bond. I've posted WoB above. Possible, but hard, and would require something else to allow a Seeker to detect Breaths. Possible, but if a boon and bane are treated as one thing, that's not possible, you have to steal both of them. Yes. Possible. No. Ghostblood wanted to capture a Herald in a Raysium (Odium's god metal, which have the property of conducting investiture) dagger with a gemstone, the same that was used in RoW by Raboniel/Navani and in OB by Vyre. Not nicrosil. While Nicrosil spike steals investiture, you won't fit the entire Unmade in it. Spikes hold relatively low investiture, and Scadrial is a low invested world, compared to Roshar. Any spren is vastly more invested than what's on Scadrial. You might rip part of it, not all of it. And another problem is hitting a correct binding place on something that isn't human. You won't remake an Unmade, you only damage its spirit web and possibly make it deadeye. Possible, but probably with some unwanted side effects. Oathpact might be tied to identity, so it might not work on anybody who isn't a proper Herald.- 20 replies

Totally possible. Mistborn spoiler: I'm not sure about the first one but Aviars having not useful powers seems likely. With connection, there could be an Aviar who dampens connections to people around you, to make you unnoticeable by them, Mistborn Spoilers:
-
The dagger like Nightblood would have their own identity, and the attribute would be keyed to Feruchemist - not usable for the dagger. But if it's unkeyed attribute, the object could use that but only under special circumstances, whatever they are: I don't think simple Awakened objects can tap metalminds, Lifeless can, but they have self-awareness and brain. Ok, Tress spoilers: Roseite is likely invested. It's a part of a Primal Aether. So no.
-
No. Those are different types of investiture, likely with different identities, keyed to different Shards. It would be like trying to use Stormlight to Awaken, impossible without changing Stormlight into Breaths first. It would require more Breaths because there are different types of investiture resisting each other, so you need more investiture to break through that investiture resisting yours. It's possible that all of your speed would now be inaccessible to you as the whole steel dagger just got a new identity, different from yours and it would contaminate your attribute stored in there. If that speed isn't unkeyed, that dagger won't be able to access it either.
-
Well, they’re both investiture, and they both can fill a piece of metal, and a piece of metal can be full of investiture, so I think this might be possible. It won't be exactly like Feruchemist does, but both Feruchemy and Awakening invest objects. And you can put inactive Breaths in metals without 9th Heightening, just with a command "my Breath to yours". Yes, and if you Awaken with unkeyed Breaths anyone would be able to recover those Breaths.
-
Then your investiture will be resisted by Breaths in the metal, making it harder for you to store in it. Or it would act as a partially filled metalmind by another Feruchemist - less space for your attributes and you can feel those Breaths there inaccessible to you. There aren't any WoBs on that but some regarding Awakening spikes or metalminds:
