No, because that isn't part of youe soul. It's a piece of clothing. Unless you're a Cognitive Shadow without any physical body, or a Splinter, you can't "heal" your clothes. It's not alive, it isn't part of you, and I doubt just perception could change that.

Did Taravangian direct the Roshone Affair?
alder24 replied to arrietajp's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not everything has to be tied together. I don't think it's possible. Back then he didn't have this drive to control everything, I don't see any reason for a king of a small city state to get involved in affairs in Alethkar. Why would he get involved with some low level Lighteye owning a few silversmiths? There is nothing for Taravangian to gain from it. There was no Diagram, no plan to control Roshar, no plan to save Roshar. He would have no interest in killing two old silversmiths in Kholinar. Roshone has enough reasons to act on his own here. -
I think they said "It's for your own good" not to Adonalsium, but to themselves, because they wanted to justify what they were doing, they wanted not to feel the guilt, because they wanted to assure themselves they were doing the right thing despite feeling that this isn't right. Even if they believed it was necessary, especially then, many of them might feel guilty and they just wanted to ease their conscience. Yeah, no, I doubt that I don't think so, Hoid was offered a Shard, but rejected it. The Shattering happened, Adonalsium was Shattered into 16 pieces, and the original Vessels new more or less what to expect and which one to pick up. It was a more or less regular type of Ascending, powers of Shards dropped and people picked them up, just like Vin, Sazed or Taravangian. But we know too little about it to know for sure. You're right, that makes sense. Good point. Thanks, looks like this theory is back on the menu.

"The Shards" didn't exist before the Shattering. They were just people back then. I call them the 17, or original Vessels. Because Shards didn't exist before, the rules which bind them might not apply to Adonalsium at all - Adonalsium might be some kind of force, not entity, have no Vessel, no sentience or no will, no access to future vision - everything is on the table as we basically know nothing at this moment. Dawnshards may not have existed back then either - there are WoBs talking about the weapon used to kill Adonalsium, which was destroyed in the process, but remains of it still exists - strongly hinting that pre-Shattering Dawnshards were different in some way that current ones. Dawnshards themselves are useless on their own, I wouldn't call them "the most powerful weapons in existence". They're like A-dualumin on the Shardic level, they need some other invested art to work at full potential. That being said, who told you that Adonalsium has to be good with the future sight? We have examples of Shards who aren't particularly good with it, like Ruin and Honor, maybe Adonalsium wasn't that good as well. Additionally it took a mere human with imperfect future vision to cloud Odium's sight and prevent him from seeing his own demise - Shardic future vision is very limited and easily disrupted, it shows possibilities, not certain futures - the same might apply to Adonalsium. It's not that hard to get access to Fortune - everyone has a little access to their own Fortune. If the 17 had access to Dawnshard with some invested art, then why couldn’t they be able to manipulate Fortune, or peer directly into SR to see the future? To add more, does Sazed have double the future sight as normal Shards? It doesn't seem that way, he was blinded by Autonomy without any troubles, and the Intent of Shard plays a big role in determining which Shard is good or bad at predicting the future. Harmony might be bad at this because of his Intent, Adonalsium might be bad at it for multiple reasons (maybe he had a bad day at work). Another possibility is that something bad happened to Adonalsium, he might have gone insane, or otherwise unable to act in certain ways (maybe he always was like that), which forced the 17 to Shatter him, or at least make them believe this was the right choice to make. Tress spoilers: WoBs: As a bonus, this wasn't the first time someone tried to kill Adonalsium, so Adonalsium allowing Shattering to happen is less likely (sad as I like this idea): Which things? Quotes please?

Dividing Divine Breaths Into Multiple Spikes
alder24 replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If they have that then yes, I don't remember Elantris well. Possibly. I think it's likely that investiture keyed to different entities grant slightly different effects, thus you won't get precisely the same things as what Heightenings give, but something different but similar. However I would say that stuff like physical enhancements are generally granted by all types of investiture, thus Hemalurgy can grant you that. Although Breaths on their own doesn't seem to make you stronger and faster - Vivenne had at least 600 Breaths and wasn't noticeably stronger or faster, Vahr had 1000, not to mention Susebron who with at least 50000 Breaths was still held and dragged by a few people and despite trying, he could break free - there are some limitation to those things, you won't get infinitely strong, nor noticeably stronger with low levels of investiture. -
Dividing Divine Breaths Into Multiple Spikes
alder24 replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree with @Treamayne - Divine Breaths don't grant anything, all of those things are just the side effects of massive concentration of investiture in the physical host, you can't steal those effects. However we know from WoBs you can steal a Divine Breath. The way WoBs talk about it seem to imply you can just steal it with a single spike. A Divine Breath is part of the Returned soul - not his whole soul, it isn't the fossil of his soul, but just a part of it. The way I understand it is that a Divine Breath is just a nail of investiture that Connects Returned to PR, which conjoins his soul with his body and holds them together, keeps them alive. With that in mind I think it would be extremely difficult to steal parts of Divine Breath several times while keeping Returned alive. His soul might simply disconnect from his Physical body the moment his Divine Breath loses some amount of investiture, slip into the Beyond, or he simply might die due to spiritual damages, not to mention physical ones. You might not be able to achieve what you want. However if you steal just a piece of it, or its entirety, the effects you might get would be something similar to what Vivenna has, maybe some low-Breath effects (increased Life Sense, color recognition etc) depending on how large is the stolen piece of Divine Breath. The neat part about stealing a Divine Breath is that you don't need to feed it with investiture. This aspect of Divine Breath is tied to the nature of Cognitive Shadows and keeping them alive. If you're alive, the Divine Breath won't consume investiture from you. I've just found this WoB and now I think it's very desirable to steal Divine Breaths, as that would be the easiest method of acquiring the permanent immortality (and on top of that you can have lots of Breaths for Awakening without worrying that you use too much of it and lose immortality and age rapidly). -
Sunlit Man spoilers are not allowed here, on this subforum. Please edit your post (you can find the edit option in the 3 dot menu in the upper right corner of your post) and delete this section. Have you read Secret History? SH spoilers: There are some problems with this. Firstly, Perpendicularity is generally independent from its Shard. They can't really deny people the right to enter (only Autonomy is somehow able to do so, but this might be achieved by simply guarding the area with loyal servants). Secondly, Ruin was imprisoned back then, he would have no control over almost anything at all. Shards being willing to interact with Hoid or not have no bearing on Hoid's ability to use Perpendicularity - Hoid can hide his presence from Shards, so that they would be unable to sense him (like we see in SH). Using Shard's Perpendicularity doesn't mean "seeking this Shard out". Perpendicularity is a natural manifestation of Shard's presence in the system. Because Shards invest in a planet, their power is leaking out from the Spiritual Realm into the Physical Realm, and concentrate as Physical investiture in form of gas, liquid and solid. This liquid form creates Perpendicularity - Shards don't create them (again, Autonomy is a weirdo), they manifest naturally on the planet, independently from Shardic will. Just like Shards can't prevent someone from using their god metals or their Invested Arts, Shards can't prevent someone from using their Perpendicularity. Moreover, during the Classical era of Scadrial, Preservation's Perpendicularity was far away, in the most inaccessible place on Scadrial, weeks or months away from any settlements - using that Perpendicularity to enter Scadrial would be tiresome. SH spoilers: We don't know how long Hoid was a Dawnshard. Just holding so much power for a brief moment would twist and expand his soul and leave a lasting effect on him, just like holding Shardic power does to people who later become Slivers. You can hold it even for a brief moment, like Vin or Rahsek did, and it still will expand your soul and make you a Sliver after you drop the power. The same would apply to Dawnshard. There are ways to grant you Feruchemy using Scadrial's god metals. Pure Lerasium gives you only Allomancy, and from SA we know Hoid used his Lerasium bead to get Allomancy. For all we know, Hoid doesn't have Feruchemy. If Hoid had Feruchemy, he would use it to store his memories in Copperminds, not in Breaths. Trusting a Shard that already broke his Oath and now is slowly dying with something as powerful as a Dawnshard is a very bad idea. Leaving it on Scadrial is even a worse idea - sooner or later Ruin will be free and Dawnshard will be his. I don't think Hoid would be that stupid to leave a Dawnshard basically in Ruin's hands. And yes, Shards can use Dawnshard and the effect of this would be disastrous. I bet you could hide it like that, but the problem with the Pits is that they are the hub for intergalactic trade, lots of people hang around the Pits, and there are several groups of people hunting for Dawnshard. It takes just a bit of Fortune for someone to discover it and those "Dawnhunters" would soon know about it. Overall I think it's possible that there is a Dawnshard named Survive, and Hoid was holding it. However I don't think he would leave it on Scadrial, with Ruin waiting to get free. That would be really dangerous. Nonetheless it's an interesting theory.

Huh. That would actually explain perfectly why the Hemalurgic decay in Era 2 is no longer a thing but still exists in Cosmere. Perfect metals. I love it so much. It makes so much sense. Maybe, a perfect gemstone can store "far more" light, but I wouldn't expect that the difference with a perfect metal would be "far, far more", like you want - "far more" like with gemstones, would be more likely But maybe. I wonder however how impurity of metals affects Hemalurgy and Feruchemy. I don't think books told us that. It already works in Allomancy. The purer the metal is, the more power it gives you, but some badly mixed metals will make you sick despite feeling the reserve in you. TFE ch 7" Temperature has some effect on investiture, at least when metal is already molten. You might be onto something.

Yes, but F-gold burns off toxins in your body, so you would have to first breathe out the gas, then heal yourself, otherwise you will just destroy the gas with healing. With the concentration you can get from F-cadmium, toxic gas can poison you a lot before you breathe it all out, cause pain, bleeding, internal damage or even it can make you lose consciousness - it can get very nasty for you really fast. The longer you wait, the more you have to heal, the more healing you have to use. It's possible, but not advisable even when you have F-gold. SoS ch 5:

Roshar has no rocket technology. There are no rockets in Cosmere at that moment as far as we know. Gavilar can't have rockets out of nowhere. What kind of fuel would he use? The box mentioned here was likely an aluminum box, or some invention similar to Seon box used by Ghostbloods in RoW, which allowed you to put gemstones filled with Voidspren or Voidlight in the box, transport it via the Shadesmar into Roshar without severing Connection. Ulim was confirmed to come from the Storm surrounding Braize in CR (the Cognitive Realm) - he was captured in CR and transported in CR to Roshar. RoW ch 86: Catching spren in Braize's Shadesmare, transporting them from there in and using aluminum would be incredibly difficult and expensive. Aluminum is a very rare and expensive metal, it isn't easy to get or Roshar. Then add to it your own ship and crew in CR, as you want to remain discreet, and the time it takes to travel to the border of Braize, where an incredibly dangerous barrier storm is ever present, and the costs and difficulties are mounting on. Not to mention actually attracting Voidspren with proper stimuli to catch them in gemstones. That's why it's hard, or at least that's one possibility. No, they can't leave even in the Physical Realm. Splinters and Cognitive Shadows are tied to the area, no matter if they're in the Cognitive or Physical Realm, they can't leave it. Nale said the distance is not significant because both spren and Heralds aren't bound just to the planet Roshar, but to the whole Rosharan system, which Braize is a part of. Heralds can travel to Braize easily, but not out of the system.

A Divine Breath is one, super powerful Breath, not 2000 Breaths, it can't be transferred, it's turned into kinetic investiture, used for healing and returns to Endowment. You can't give it away. However this is one of the most powerful forms of healing in Cosmere, you can heal a lot with a Divine Breath. And you can do different things than healing, which we don't know yet. The God King didn't just get his tongue healed, he's never spoke before, he's never learn to talk - Lightsong's Divine Breath not only give him back his tongue, but also change his Cognitive and Spiritual aspect so he could speak like he had never lose his tongue in the first place. That's a little more complicated. And no, a Divine Breath is what makes Returned Returned. You can't have Returned without a Divine Breath, even if you give him 2000 Breaths. A Divine Breath seems to be the very thing that pins Returned soul into his body. Without it he dies.

Effects of Roshars Oxigen levels
alder24 replied to Shaukan-son-Hasweth's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't remember any. Yes there are fire pits and torches, but I don't recall any arson or wildfires. Keep in mind, most buildings on Roshar are made out of stone or crem, non-flammable material. Any wood structure would be instantly blown away by the first Highstorm. That's why you wouldn't see fires consuming villages or cities with one notable exception - Rathalas which was purposefully ignited by Dalinar with the aid of oil and contained many wooden structures, the flames were large and hot, oxygen definitely helped (which is not something that characters in-world would recognise as for them this is normal, they can't compare it to standart levels of oxygen on different planets). OB ch 76: The large oxygen level on Roshar also allows large crustaceans to exist there. That's another effect. -
F-Cadmium seems handy in many situations - high altitude climbing or diving, also it gives you a small edge when performing all kinds of physical activities (your normal blood oxygenation is over 97% so there isn't much room for improvement anyway). Handy but situational. You can become almost the Aquaman - drag people into water and drown them while you can breathe fine. Terrorists hijacked a plane - depressurize the hull and only you are left standing. Because the description of F-cadmium is "stores breath," you can most likely store CO2 in Cadmiumminds, which is even better. I bet you could store Helium or Sulfur Hexafluoride to make your voice hilariously high or deep whenever you want It's great when you're on another side of law and want to conceal your identity and voice from police. Overall I agree, it's useful but only in some specific situations, it might not fit your lifestyle. Average overall. However unsealed Cadmiumminds would be definitely desirable for many rescue situations. Now F-bendalloy stores nutrients, calories and fluids. Sounds handy, but again only in certain situations. For those who love eating this is an ideal power, they can eat all they want without gaining weight. But can it do more? Can you store ATP directly? That would be handy, it could provide you with instant energy when performing any physical activity, you wouldn't get tired easily. I bet you could store alcohol in Bendalloyminds - get drunk, extract some information and then store all alcohol to get immediately sober (no F-gold healing needed for that). Can you store urine and other toxins? That would be handy, you can easily avoid any poisoning (and going to the toilet - unkey that metalmind and give it to your fellow bendalloy Ferring as a prank). I agree, it's nice for a day to day use, but you aren't a superhero. You can be however - team up with some other Ferrings, create Bendalloy medallions, store lots of food and water there and you can become a humanitarian aid whenever there is a crisis. It's much easier to transport a small piece of metal that can feed a person for weeks than tons of food that can spoil anytime and attract rodents (can a mouse tap a Bendalloymind - that would be a new type of pest).

Can you tell a Hemalurgic spike into thinking it's in a body?
alder24 replied to AltonicKeys's question in Cosmere Q&A
I don't think so. There is some cognitive aspect in a spike, everything has it, but it's probably not significantly developed. "Talking" to it won't change anything, the spike isn't sapient, sentient or fully self-aware. Soulcasting a spike into something else is pointless (it wouldn't change anything) and would require a looot of investiture, because investiture resists investiture, and spikes are invested. Forgery also wouldn't work. In both cases, Soulcasting and Forgery, you can only affect the metal and the charge it holds, and I don't think you can convince it to think it's in a body without adding anything else. It would be easier to take a piece of wood, nail a spike into it and then Soulcast/Forge it into a piece of meat - that's possible and much easier to do. But just sticking it in a piece of meat is even easier to do. It's probably more spiritual, I think a spike needs some spirit web to attach itself to it, which stops decay. The spirit web needs to be big enough to trick a spike into thinking that's something living, some animal, person etc. A piece of meat is ideal for it. But this isn't needed anymore. TLM Ars Arcanum states that Hemalurgic decay is a thing of the past - they've found an easier way to stop it or it's because of Harmony's nature which somehow stopped, like it stopped Hemalurgic compounding. The easiest solution might be to put a spike into an aluminum box for example. But I would guess it's something different, not some object, maybe a proper Command? Set's scientists handled spikes openly, with no box or no additional objects so I think this might be something different, Relmathic in nature (if this wasn't Harmony's doing, WoB seems to deny it, telling decay still happens in Cosmere, they just know how to avoid it). TLM Ars Arcanum: -
It can happen, but Adolin swearing Oath will not bring Maya back. It would have to be her original Radiant who broke her Oath and then reswear them and that would bring her back. This isn't possible for Maya now (for Testament it is). Just bonding a deadeye blade will give you the regular benefits of owning a Shardblade. Isn't that enough? Anyone can do that. Becoming a Radiant is a far better option, so finding a way to revive deadeye is advisable. Bond a sapient Splinter.

Why is Kelsier viewed as a supervillain?
alder24 replied to CR0N0S.LXIII's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think there is a possibility of Kelsier becoming some kind of villain in one story or another, but I don't think he will be the ultimate Cosmere villain. Brandon often talks how he could be a villain of a different story. It's best to show you those WoBs: Look at this from another angle. Kelsier is/was arrogant, egocentric, ruthless, smart and hateful. He was an ideal man to start the revolution against an oppressive government and a tyrannical Lord Ruler. But those times are now gone, there is no tyranny, there is no oppression, Scadrial is free. But that's what we think. Kelsier is arrogant enough to think for some twisted reason that only he holds the key to total freedom, security or whatever he thinks of, and he needs to grant the people of Scadrial those things, against the oppression of [blank], for example Sazed. It's entirely possible that at some point in Era 3 Kelsier will think that Sazed poses a danger to Scadrial and start actively fighting against him. Whatever the circumstances of this might be, depending on who will be the main PoV of this story, Kelsier might become the villain of future books. Kelsier already fears that he will have to fight against Harmony, the seed was already planted TLM epilogue 4: -
Waging war on the rest of the Cosmere 101

Shards are vastly different from regular humans, they're just a bunch of raw investiture existing in SR with a mind (Vessel) attached to it. That's why they exist everywhere and can see what's happening even on other worlds. Even for Shards "traveling" in SR is so different because distance has no meaning in SR, little Cosmere spoilers WoB: Mistborn spoilers in SA forum: You can't travel physically into SR, that's what I meant. You can look into it, but the moment you become invested enough to transcend realms, your physical body vaporizes. SR isn't a place you can go into in a traditional sense. There are ways to peer into it or utilize SR (like Oathgates) but you have no experience of traveling through SR or anything like that when using Oathgates - motion is irrelevant there. Experiencing SR is just different, and it makes more sense to call it "peering into" than "traveling into". You can't "go" but you can "see" or "be" in SR.

I agree with The Sibling. I don't think any CS can form a Nahel Bond, only those without a physical body. Nahel Bond will bring them closer to PR in return. Returned and Heralds already are in PR, they have a body there. The questions about it are usually the other way around - can Returned bond a spren:

The Alternate Timelines of Stormlight Archive
alder24 replied to Collecter128's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ishar is mad, but he is also a Bondsmith - just like Dalinar, he can see Connections of other people, and he might have seen Dalinar's Connection to Odium, which is really strong for several reasons (one of them is that Dalinar was meant to be Odium's champion). But more importantly his insane reasoning made him believe that only Odium's champion could reclaim Urithiru, a place Ishar believes belongs to him. Mad Ishar can't be trusted. RoW ch 111: RoW ch 112: Edit: I think the Stormfather might be right about Ishar in OB ch 64: -
The Alternate Timelines of Stormlight Archive
alder24 replied to Collecter128's topic in Stormlight Archive
Future in Cosmere isn't set in stone. There is no "original timeline", only infinite possibilities. The Decisions of every person can change the future, not only those who can see it, but also those who can't - everyone can do something that even Shards didn't predict. Not only Odium sees the future, but also Cultivation and Honor as well, they all can act on what they see and set up plans thousands of years in advance, and others would have trouble spotting that, as they only see an infinite pool of possible futures, splitting more and more because other Shards look at those as well - which all can be wrong. At this point it's a guessing game. Just like Renarin obstructs Odium's future vision, Cultivation does that as well, and Honor did this as well. Cultivation set up her own plans against Odium - she met and helped Dalinar, Taravangian and Lift. If Cultivation hadn't helped Dalinar, he would have fallen into Odium's hands in OB. What? How? When? Why? Where did this come from? I am asking generously. I haven't seen any hint about Ishar looking into the future. -
You don't need (and you don't want to) attract every single Splinter of Honor on Roshar, because that includes every single spren and Honorspren in existence, who all predate the Splintering of Honor. This would be a bad idea, disrupting the whole ecosystem (spren form Nahel Bonds with living creatures, making them adaptable to conditions on Roshar), and causing the mass extinction event. I disagree that concentrating enough Honor's power in one place would work like @Letryx13 proposes - it would just form a Perpendicularity and that's it. I also don't think you could draw the Stormfather fully into PR, as that would create massive problems for Roshar, that would be painful and potentially deadly to Stormfater (as OB proves) and this might be impossible because Stormfather already partially exists in PR, just like the Sibling (as literal Highstorm). Theoretically it is possible, but highly improbable to summon the Stormfather as a Shardblade. It is not about attracting all Splinters, as all of them are still Honor (all spren in CR and all Splintered raw power still remaining in SR), it's about Connecting them all together - and that's something a Bondsmith can do. Every piece of Honor exists in SR, it's a matter of reaching there and forming proper Connections to them all, reforging the Shard. No need to attract them, in SR space has no meaning, you just need to be able to reach into SR and Connect to them all. The Stormfather has already proper Connection to the remnants of Honor, it can be used. No. Honorblades are a tiny drop compared to Honor's whole powers.

No problem at all.
