I'm wary of engaging in discussion of the sexualisation of women on something like a book cover but I'm say two things. 1. A female member of the most powerful house of a powerful nation will often be more beautiful than average, that's natural selection sadly. Powerful people get to marry beautiful people (of both genders). 2. Any woman single-handedly battling a monster is going to be beautiful because she's single-handedly battling a monster I didn't even notice her specs I just noticed her being TOTALLY AWESOME.

cosmere Shard Combination Attack Against Odium
Extesian replied to Zennix's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah there are a couple of relevant WoBs I know of on this. This shows a Shard can divest (I'm assuming it doesn't just mean if the Shard is splintered). This makes it sound to me like 'going' somewhere really is a problem for an invested Shard, but sure they can go somewhere on the Spiritual realm. But Shard-battles are on all three realms so I feel a Shard that has properly invested in a planet could not easily leave to attack another Shard. Hence Odium avoiding investing until he got trapped. And as we know the Shards all had more or less equal power at the beginning and Preservation's small sacrifice to invest more of himself on Scadrial humans led to an imbalance that let Ruin overcome him, I think it will now be very hard for a Shard to go to battle Odium. A bunch of them together perhaps? -
Poland - Warsaw and Krakow events 18/21 March
Extesian replied to Extesian's topic in Events and Signings
I really like the answer. Depression usually comes about when psychological trauma triggers a brain chemistry imbalance. You can then fix the psychological issue but without addressing the chemical imbalance the depression remains or conversely fix the chemistry but without addressing the psychological cause the imbalance will reappear. So healing will work in a similar way to how medication is supposed to, fixing the imbalance, but without also addressing the psychological cause it won't be enough. Add to that the component of fixing you to the way you see yourself. That means if someone starts to identify with the psychological effects of the chemistry imbalance (common amongst depression sufferers) then that won't heal anyway. I think the answer makes good sense from what I know (medically and through experience) of depression. -
Yeah I'm pretty excited about the numerous implications of this answer. White Sand was always supposed to be a trilogy so I wonder if he'll release the novel fresh or if the graphic novels will serve as the first part with two subsequent canon novels on the time between the end of White Sand (prose) and Khriss becoming totally boss. Either way I'll be glad to see more of one of the most important Shardworlds in proper prose form

White Sand Volume 1 Reactions (Unpublished Version Spoilers)
Extesian replied to WeiryWriter's topic in White Sand
I'm very happy about one WoB that @strumienpola got at the first Poland signing. These two were mine. About slatrification he said that if he ever writes the novel (oh pretty please) he'll make slatrification an in-world legend I was never comfortable with slatrification so I'm glad it looks like that won't be canon in the end. -
WoB was from the previous Boskone signing So maybe not nothing. But nothing immediately apparent

It was a nice little question to get in there! And yeah I think it ups the odds of it being interfered with a lot or simply created. No complicated UV absorbed as investiture answer

I'm a bit excited, though maybe prematurely, about a WoB at the Poland signing that just happened. Still waiting to hear a recording but @Oversleep summarized one as So I'm thinking Wisdom. It would make a lot of sense and match with some of the thoughts on here?

Poland - Warsaw and Krakow events 18/21 March
Extesian replied to Extesian's topic in Events and Signings
So much of interest! One thing that jumped out at me Depending on whether 'wise' was exact wording, could be a deliberate way of saying the Shard is Wisdom, which was already my favorite for this (or Caution, but Wisdom makes more sense now). -

Oh I cannot wait to hear more on this one, even a redacted transcript, this sounds amazing. I will just be trying to expunge from my mind the idea that this story's end is known. @Oversleep I envy you but i think I'm glad I'm not you. But..amazing. -
The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts. And then the murders began.

Oathbringer Cover Reveal and Release Date

I like to think she's simply jumping sideways down each step, mocking the Thunderclast with her Jasnah-don't-give-a-chull attitude.- 51 comments

I really like this thinking. For ages I've been trying to figure out the bondsmith/Nahel oaths mechanism but I never thought of blackmailing the spren by linking their life to the life of the person. I had a bit of a go at linking stuff, mainly around their ability to create bonds in all three realms, which I'll quote in a spoiler box in case it helps anyone. But i really like your version of it. I'll have to think more about if it falls down in places, but kudos.

You probably know, but in case not the page is here. It's at midday but he hasn't posted the location yet. Just keep up to date with the site, he must announce soon. And if there's any chance you can record the audio he's usually ok with it and it is invaluable for us I'm always happy to do transcriptions if you do. And enjoy it! I'm both jealousand really glad Bulgarian fans are representing.

Ha i know that Yata. I just take the scientific method to these things and like to be proven wrong (or right). That was a call to everyone to support or dispute. I'm curious to see if that idea has relevance is all. I see arguments both ways.

Interesting. So you're suggesting that the means to access Honorblade surgebinding, the thing that gives you the innate investiture, is all Honor, but the system is Honor and Cultivation? I must admit I assumed that Honorblade surgebinding was all Honor and that Nahel surgebinding is then the spren from Honor and Cultivation mimicking an Honor magic system with the combined investiture of both (and it feels consistent - Cultivation is about growth and the progression of oaths is exactly that, growth). So yeah i figured the two surgebinding systems actually are different, even if one copies the other's effects). Unquestionably Nahel surgebinding us of both of course. But yeah that was just my thoughts I'm very happy as always to be proven wrong or understand why a system that gives innate investiture would be of one Shard but the kinetic investiture would be of two. I haven't thought it through fully, I was just floating it

I support the idea of a Unity/Amalgamation/Collaboration shard. There's a thread on figuring out the remaining Shards where this has been talked about. Brandon has said it's not as simple as Shards having paired opposites but I feel if Autonomy is one it's appropriate that the opposite, an intent around combining efforts to have a sum greater than the parts, fits well. I don't think it would be one that manifests in terms of an actual hive mind but we do know that intent confined the effects of investiture (Preservation can't really destroy, Endowment actually makes investiture stick in a way other shards don't). So i feel the investiture of such a shard may work in a way that to be used it must be by groups rather than an individual. I wouldn't rule out Dysian Aimians being refugees from a world invested by such a Shard but there's no evidence for it. Just my speculative musings

Yeah it was the most recent signing That pretty much settled that Honorblade surgebinding was all Honor I think. They can be bonded I'm not sure about the restrictions but I think it's just because Honor is now splintered and can't power them directly, hence this WoB

(Cosmere Spoilers) Thoughts on BoM re-read
Extesian replied to Steelheart's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Hmm the following is my rough take on it, hopefully people can pick apart as appropriate. And the terminology as well, in case I've mixed up terms I'll describe them. Honorblades basically provide temporary innate investiture (the ability to use surgebinding). Whereas with allomancy it is Lerasium that permanently rewrites sDNA by creating a huge connection to Preservation, Honorblades provide (as per recent WoB) temporary access to Honor which gives the ability to surgebind (the type of surgebinding dependent on which blade it is). Because it's a temporary connection it constantly requires investiture to maintain that connection, unlike Lerasium. Now that Honor is splintered that access requires Stormlight, and lots of it, whereas in the Heralds'days it was free-flowing. So Honorblade surgebinding requires both investiture to fuel the surge and also investiture to maintain the connection to Honor that gives the necessary innate investiture. The difference with Nahel bonds is you directly bond with a particular splinter and that gives you the innate investiture you need to access surgebinding. Then all you need is a much smaller amount of investiture to manipulate the surges. I suspect (with little evidence) that the Oathpact relates to Honor granting direct access to him and the condition of this was the Heralds being required to bind themselves to him (as that sort of power can obviously be misused). I also suspect that the Honorblades were keyed to the individual Heralds' identities and that when (most of them) broke the Oathpact this severed the identity, making the Honorblades unkeyed and enabling anyone to use them. But these two ideas are just ideas and probably off-topic.- 32 replies
