@AxeliustheGreat I don't really think that the book was making sport of Kaladin - he was just having tons of struggles this book, which is what it was all about. Faces struggles and learning to cope with them. Plus, he isn't the main character, so it makes sense that he got less time in the book than he has in past books.

It's one of the Knights Radiant. They have the Surges of Cohesion and Tension. Here's the different orders of Knights Radiant: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Knights_Radiant

I know I've seen a more explicit WoB that basically said that the reason that sprenblades are swords even though they could change shape was just because that's what form they were in when the Radiants abandoned their oaths, but I couldn't find it. Here's a WoB that kind of says that:

It would be interesting to see Rock and some others of the go to the Horneater peaks and try to take it back from Odium's forces. Plus, it would give us an insight into the culture there, which is something that has always interested me. If I were Brandon Sanderson, I would give Adolin more screen time since he's one of my favorite characters in the series right now. He's already doing the whole Eshonai/Venli thing in the next book, so that's taken care of. I would also keep Shallan and Adolin married and focus on writing about their struggles through making the marriage work, which would be a much better story to me than breaking them up somehow and hooking Shallan and Kaladin up. Also, Kaladin needs to swear the Fourth Ideal. Oh, I really want to see a Willshaper in action! I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Ooooh, that cover is sooooooooo good. I'm actually really excited for this story. The prologue and first two chapters are so interesting and I can't wait for the star-fighter AI to get introduced. I'm really interested to see what connected universe this fits into, since it's not Cosmere nor Reckonersverse.

[OB] Renarin and Adolin (healing wrist scene)
StrikerEZ replied to Sun Maker's topic in Stormlight Archive
I do agree that Adolin becoming a Radiant would be really awesome and that he's probably "broken enough" to become a Radiant. However, I don't think it really takes that much to make someone broken to be a Radiant. Plus, the SR shows the perfect version of everyone, so of course Adolin looked perfected in there. -
Fixed the error Basically, it's a bit like how in the Cosmere everything is made of Investiture. The whole conservation of mass, energy, and investiture thing. It's like that. They are literally turning their element into energy that they can then use later. There is a limit to how much energy they can absorb, but it is greater than their natural ability to generate energy that they can use. If that's confusing, then I'm doing my job well. I'll still answer any more questions you have. It doesn't really translate that well. Probably should've mentioned that. That's new. If you remember the old elements, I replaced Mind, Order, and Chaos with Heat, Spirit, and Fauna. There's no real limit to how cold they cold make it, except for the limit on how much energy they can absorb (which is unique for each individual). Absorbing heat has no real effect on them besides the fact that they have a greater energy reserve for later. Hmm...I don't think Ice could sublimate, but I hadn't thought of that. That's a maybe. There's nothing really stopping it from happening besides people realizing it could work. I worked this out with a real life friend of mine, and the answer is yes. It gets really fun because it basically creates infinite energy, especially if a Shadow Elemancer goes into a dark room with a Light Elemancer and they both start absorbing. Yeah, that would work. It kinda depends on the person's definition of those two elements though. It's easier for a Sand guy to break down rocks into sand and control it then it is for a Stone guy to turn sand back into rocks they can use. Yeah, but I need to put it somewhere though.

@Belzedar @The One Who Connects @Steeldancer I updated the main post, if you want to look at it.
-
That's just because it's like the number of the universe this story takes place in, kinda like 16 in the Cosmere. Hmm....the magic is also based on perception, so even though lightning does all those things, the people usually associate certain elements together. I could see it going with fire or air most strongly. I just can't decide which one.

So, if you've been around long enough, you probably remember the first topic on this I made a looooong time ago. Some things are relatively the same when it comes to the overall history, but lots of little specific things have changed. I'll go into those eventually, but I just need to go over some stuff right now to get some help with the magic system. There are 17 elements: Air: This element is pretty self explanatory. Elemancers (a temporary term for someone who controls one of the elements) that control Air can manipulate wind currents, create vacuums (either by absorbing the air in an area or by pulling air away from it), and fly by manipulating the air above them to go faster while propelling themselves forward with wind from behind. Theoretically, they can create air if they need to, but in most cases it is far easier to simply manipulate air that already exists. Crystal: Crystal is a bit more weird. Basically, they can control gemstones and other minerals, shaping and moving them however they want. This element is less powerful on Elmeera, the planet this story takes place on, but can be really powerful on some others. They can also create and absorb crystals. Fauna: Elemancers that can control Fauna can manipulate the minds of animals, cause them to grow faster than they normally would (which can be used to heal them), cause mutations in the creature's DNA, and many other things. Fire: This one is pretty straight forward. They can manipulate fire that already exists, or they can create fire and manipulate that instead. They can also absorb fire. Flora: This element works very similarly to Fauna, except with plants instead. Heat: Elemancers that control Heat can raise the temperature around them or in specific areas within their magical radius by using some of their energy. Conversely, they can absorb lower the temperature by absorbing some of the heat. Ice: Elemancers that control Ice can create ice and move it around, manipulate ice that already exists, absorb ice that already exists, or freeze water into ice. Light: Elemancers that control Light can create or absorb light and manipulate light that already exists. Lightning: Elemancers that control Lightning can create or absorb lightning/electricity, as well as manipulate lightning/electricity that already exists. Metal: Elemancers that control Metal can create or absorb metal, manipulate metal that already exists, or reshape metal into different forms or different metals. Sand: Elemancers that control Sand can create or absorb sand and manipulate sand that already exists (riding sand dunes for the win). Shadow: This element works in reverse of Light. Light elemancers can make it dark by absorbing light, which doesn't cost energy, while Shadow Elemancers have to spend energy to make it dark. Sound: Elemancers that control Sound can control or absorb the vibrations in the air that make sound and manipulate those vibrations as well. Spirit: This element gets into the weird stuff of my universe, so not gonna explain (for now). Stone: Elemancers that control Stone can control rocks and stones and create/absorb rocks and stones. Vapor: Elemancers that control Vapor can control/absorb/create gaseous water. They can also evaporate water into vapor. Water: Elemancers that control Water can control/absorb/create liquid water. They can also melt ice into water and condense vapor into water. (List is now complete) At the time the story takes place, the way the people of Elmeera understand the magics has been influenced by the rise of the Seven Kingdoms, which were Fire (Fire and Heat), Water (Water, Ice, and Vapor), Air (Air and Sound), Earth (Stone, Sand, Crystal, and Metal), Light, Shadow, and Life (Flora and Fauna), and the rise of the cultures that were associated with those kingdoms. (Spirit is left out on purpose) As for Lightning, I haven't decided whether I should put it into the big group of Fire or Air. I could make it fit in either one, I just need help deciding which group to put it in.

@Glamdring804 @Silverblade5 This is a huge necro, but I didn't want to make a new thread for something that already exists. How possible would it be for a gas giant to have enough oxygen in it that a human could be in it and not die due to suffocation?

My universe was already started to coalesce before I'd started reading Sanderson, but it was his books that finally pushed me to make the connections between a couple of the stories I was planning. I'd already had the basic histories of a Shattering-esque event but only on one planet and for only a couple stories, but the Cosmere helped me connect tons of other stories together into a huge universe. I also have my own version of the Cognitive Realm, but it's more a mix of the CR and the SR. The Spirit World had existed for a long time before I started making my big universe. However, space is not compressed in the Spirit World and everything is represented as a shadow of it's physical form, not as beads, and everything, except for the souls of living things represented in the SW, is in gray-scale. Some other things that I have in my universe that is similar to the Cosmere are my versions of Investiture and Connection. My Investiture is a bit complicated, but it's basically the background energy that makes the laws of physics work collected into such a condensed form that you can use it to manipulate the universe on a minor scale. My Connections have two distinct forms: the Physical Connections (where you are, your hair color, how old you are, who you talked to at 12:34 the day before, etc.), and the Spiritual Connections (who you love, how you view the world, your memories, etc.). Also, I came up with an idea of prophecy that was actually fake and controlled by an evil being, only to find that Brandon had already done so in Mistborn. My version is a little different now, but it still has some similar ideas to the Hero of Ages prophecy.

Yeah, I don't think there would be anything stopping them from doing so. Assuming they could attract the spren of the different order. Yeah, but it would be very hard. You'd have to somehow attract two different radiant spren, follow both oaths, and whatever else would be necessary to bond two spren. Brandon has implied the spren would have to agree to it.

I don't think that the Soulcasters can be made of Cultivation's god metal. Just feels wrong. Where would people get the metal to fix the Soulcasters, which Navani implied, through Jasnah at the end of WoK, could be done?

@JasnahKholin First of all, welcome to the forums! Anyway, I do agree with most of your points and I also agree that the book almost left me feeling unsatisfied because there was so much. As for your points, I disagree with most of them. When it comes to the Jasnah thing, I think the main thing there is just the world is literally ending, so the fact that she had actually been alive the entire time is just another thing added onto the huge pile of impossible things happening. I'm sure she explained to them that she survived because she's a Radiant, so the others probably wouldn't see much of a need to worry about that now that she's back. I think the Szeth thing is very similar to the situation with Jasnah. Plus, they already know that Szeth did what he did because of King T, and I bet Szeth probably briefly described the oathstone and why he followed it to Dalinar and co. I agree that Taln and Ash showing up and not doing anything didn't make much narrative sense to me. But, in world, it makes sense why they didn't really play a huge part in the battle. Neither of them had their honorblade, so there wasn't much they could even do if they wanted to. As for Jezrien, I think his death was very important. First of all, it shows us that the Heralds are not perfect and can be killed. It also lets us realize just how powerful Odium's side is and what our heroes are really up against. What really makes that scene work for me is that this Desolation is all about new things and new dangers and anything new can happen. The heroes can't rely upon the Heralds for help simply because they're Heralds. I think the love triangle was resolved pretty well, actually. I don't think Shallan and Adolin are gonna have an easy relationship, but I'd much rather read about them struggling through making a marriage work than more of the same love triangle stuff and the lust between Shallan and Kaladin. Overall, I felt OB was the best book by far, but it was not a perfect book. There were many things that it could've done a lot better, but what it did well it did AMAZINGLY. The Dalinar arc, the switcharoo between Eshonai and Venli, the Shadesmar arc, Kaladin failing over and over again. It was all so good that I can forgive the few faults. It was way better on the reread because I knew what was going to happen and could see everything being set up so masterfully.

I don't think Renarin is even likely to become Odium's champion. The only influence Odium has over him is Glys, and I don't think that is really enough. Plus, Renarin has very little to no previous experience with the Thrill and seems willing to accept his own pain, no matter how much it hurts. I think he's gonna be an important part of team good guys, kind of a double agent like Venli. Eh, I will be very disappointed if Vyre becomes Odium's champion. That feels too obvious and pretty cliche to me.

I ended up choosing mistborn because I love the versatility of all the different powers and I don't think that power lines would be a huge problem. Plus, being able to fly would be so cool, and there's absolutely tons of metal to push off of. Time bubbles would be soooo useful. I would never have to wait for things with cadmium, and bendalloy would give me extra time if need it. Electrum would be really useful for like game shows or stuff like that. Tin and pewter would be awesome, as long as you don't become a savant. Brass and zinc would be cool, but very immoral and brain-washy. Of course, I will admit that feruchemy is very powerful, but I'd rather be a twinborn or fullborn if I had the option.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll go fix it.

A bit nit-picky, but the humans from Ashyn did not have spren. They used a similar magic that was based on the surges, but only Roshar has spren. But I do agree, it's interesting to think about how they originally used magic before the spren mimicked the Honorblades.

I'm pretty sure what Kaladin did do by stopping the store was just part of the Surge of Adhesion, which is manipulating pressure and vacuum. He created a vacuum where the storm could no longer reach him. The windspren were attracted to it because it would've done something weird to the air and the wind.

That would seem like it would make more sense, especially with how weird the fact that aluminum actually works in the Metallic Arts is, but that's not the case.

[OB] What are Shard-things made of?
StrikerEZ replied to Hoid Stole the TARDIS's topic in Stormlight Archive
Like @Weltall's WoB said, probably nothing would happen. But that's if the mistborn wasn't Connected to the Shard the metal came from. I wonder what would happen if you had a Rosharan mistborn. -
Plus, I like the theory that voidlight tends to want to stay in instead of leak like stormlight does. The only way Fused would get voidlight would be through direct infusement by BAM or Odium, possibly through the Everstorm, but it doesn't have to be that way. The Everstorm probably just makes it easier.
