  1. She actually shows up in the text before the battle, when she pranks him by binding his money pouch to his hand when he tries to let go of it, or something like that... He assumes it's just a windspren, but it was almost surely Syl.
  2. Actually, I re-read this section, and he eventually does say it out loud to Jasnah. She doesn't react. However cosmere-aware she is, I doubt she would know what lizards or crabs are. She was a bit agitated though, and she isn't fazed when Wit namedrops Elsecalling and implies he personally knew the Almighty either. I wonder how much Jasnah knows, about the Cosmere and about Hoid... If that's from the thread I think it is from, then that was just a theory, based on a lot of speculation. And yeah, it was almost certainly Hoid. Hoid tends to change appearances a lot, but he often has white hair and likes to dress up as a beggar. He also likes giving mysterious clues to information the main characters need to know about. Edit: Huh, I thought double posts merged in the new site... Sorry!
  3. Maybe. He could have 'Rosharized' it so it didn't sound entirely out of place, but they wouldn't understand the word. I doubt they understood half of the other things he was talking about either though But yeah, in the first case it could have just meant "money", which they might have a different word for than "spheres". Since it's in both epilogues though...
  4. I think he very well could have his spheres on him, actually. That doesn't necessarily mean he used stormlight, but still. And yeah, I always figured the "I've helped men kill before" referred to her being bonded to other Knights, before the Recreance.
  5. There could be many more that we don't know of yet. Next book will be interesting!
  6. During the only vision we've seen him have (if that was a vision, we technically don't know if it was just a panic response that time), he was conscious. And he had his spren to talk to. He could have started having future sight before that bond manifested enough, though. I dunno.
  7. We do have an example from BoM where a character says something that doesn't get translated as it should, because the other language doesn't have a word for that thing. It could be the same for coins, if they are considered sufficiently different from spheres. I think a lot of people tend to zone out a bit when Hoid speaks as Wit, since he often makes far-fetched puns and other jokes that go over his victims' heads. He can probably get away with saying some pretty weird things, and people will just assume they missed some word play. Same with those guards at the gate: Hoid mentioning 'coins' wasn't the only thing weird about this guy randomly sitting on some boxes, talking about storms and what people value in life. Also, Hoid has been on the planet before (when he arrives in the Peaks he asks Rock what year it is, and he seems to have something to do with the Worldsingers), so he could have learned the language normally. I do think he has a translation thingy, but he probably knows at least some languages naturally.
  8. Oh, cool! (because it's Winter) I might try to check those out later, but I think my next Le Guin will be the second Earthsea book.
  9. Yeah, but Hoid, for example, has been traveling around since at least Elantris, and probably thousands of years before then. Also, do we know that there are lots of medallions with Kelsier's memories? We've only seen one of them used, and that one was a 'gift' from Hoid. I was under the impression that the other ones were generic Southern medallions, not even necessarily copperminds.
  10. It wouldn't surprise me - I think Kaladin is one of the people Hoid is trying to slowly get to become more Cosmere aware. (Also I bet it amuses him greatly!)
  11. That's from his point of view, how he thinks of the creature. He doesn't say it out loud, and if he did, only the lizard-crab thing would hear him. But yes, that is another thing that a Rosharan person wouldn't say or think, so it should tip off a reader that something weird is up with Wit.
  12. There might be other techniques, but it seems likely that Connection is involved for all of them. It would, of course, also be possible to learn the languages normally, but that would take a lot of time. Although, for most of the Cosmere's history, Southern Scadrial hasn't had medallions (or, for that matter, existed like it now does). So either the worldhoppers got medallions from somewhere else (like pre-ash Terris), or they used other types of magic to achieve the same effect.
  13. Rabbits might exist in Shinovar, but the 'hound' part is definitely Hoid making a private joke. I think he's also trying to make certain people more Cosmere aware, if he believes they might make good worldhoppers. He also asked Dalinar about Adonalsium (though that might have been because he suspected Dalinar already was Cosmere aware).
  14. I like this. It's the sort of thing that I completely missed because it makes sense from my perspective, but not from the in-world one. Like Argent (I think) said in the other thread, it is a bit odd how the translation works out, though. Still, if it's in both epilogues, and both quotes said by Wit, I think it's very likely that it's on purpose. Zahel uses Nalthian color metaphors, but the characters listening seem to think they are old sayings, or just from a different part of the same world. So not necessarily outing him as a worldhopper for anyone who isn't Cosmere aware.
  15. I think the main thing is that Wyndle calls the Nightwatcher Mother, and Brandon has said that Wyndle's type of spren is probably the closest to Cultivationspren there is. There might be some other WoB I'm not thinking of.
  16. Finished The Left Hand of Darkness! It was good, but sometimes it felt like it avoided some issues regarding gender, etc. Of course the book was primarily from only two perspectives, so it couldn't really deal with everything I wanted it to deal with. Still, it gave me lots to think about!
  17. wOOW AMAzing It works for me, but can be a bit wonky sometimes. You might have to mark some text a few times before the pop-up shows, and then you can choose the actual text you want. I couldn't get the italics button to work on mobile though, I had to use bbcode.
  18. I don't think so... Darkness (though possibly different from spren-Skybreakers) seemed to be able to assert that Ym was guilty, but then seemingly spent a long time searching out why he was guilty - and I don't think anyone would agree that Ym was evil. Skybreakers seem to care about the letter of the law. Nightblood makes his own judgements of what evil is, without regard for laws.
  19. It's the symbol on the left of the title (circle/star, depending).
  20. Everything is so... so shiny...
  21. Well, the being that is now the Stormfather seems to be an Adonalsium spren (since highstorms existed before the shards arrived) merged with the cognitive shadow of Tanavast. So it's very possible that the Nightwatcher is an Adonalsium spren, and maybe that it 'aligned' with Cultivation in some way. (Cultivation seems to be alive, so if it is aligned with Cultivation, it's not in the same way as the Stormfather is to Honor.)
  22. Does MG mean middle grade? Are the soul shards from the meteors a finite resource, or can they be reused or artificially created? Is there a risk of them running out? How does the economy of soul keys look? Are they expensive? Is the strength of the magic dependant on the skill or strength of the user? On the quality of the etching? Can one person etch and another use?
  23. I'm not so sure that quote actually is about that WoR scene, since Shallan isn't a man. It might just be a red herring. Unless it's some kind of in-world 'mistranslation' where "men" is the same as "people", or something.
  24. The three realms are a fundamental part of the Cosmere. I'm sure Honor's death changed much in the Cognitive Realm, but it was always there.
  25. Yeah, I've spent a lot of time recently implementing a recursive algorithm on a graphics card, where recursion ranges from impossible to just a bad idea... It can be a bit annoying sometimes. Oh right, I forgot about that!
