Mistborn Tarot: Ruin This card corresponds to our Devil card. This card’s name appears to be quite old, although the imagery is modern. Like most of these cards, Ruin is taken from the deck of the Lord Mistborn. This card symbolizes the Shadow Self, Attachment, Addiction, Restriction, and Sexuality. Reversed it symbolizes Releasing Limiting Beliefs, Exploring Dark Thoughts, and Detachment. Ruin is shown holding two crossed hemalurgic spikes, from which bloody strings descend like those of a puppet. Attached to the strings are Ironeyes, the Ascendant Warrior, the Lord Mistborn, and the Survivor, all of whom were manipulated by Ruin. I don’t think she’s an equivalent. I think she is one, but it has nothing to do with Radiant orders. The first two Bondsmith spren (which isn’t a great term, but I don’t have a better one) seem to be fundamental to life on Roshar. And I think the Nightwatcher and Stormfather, who are fundamental to Roshar, became the “Bondsmith” Spren for Cultivation and Honor via a natural process once the two Invested in Roshar. BAM began undergoing the same process for Odium as he became Invested in Roshar. Bondsmith is a misnomer here. I just think every Shard ends up with a ‘god Spren’ of some kind if they Invest in Roshar as a natural function of the way Investiture manifests on the planet. The Sibling isn’t fundamental to Roshar in the same way and was a deliberate creation. I don’t know that BAM can be ‘bound’ like the Stormfather and Nightwatcher. I think she is similar to them in the sense that she is a manifestation of Odium’s Investment on Roshar. The moment Odium fully Invested and his tone became a tone of Roshar, she became a fundamental part of the world too. And that happened when she was captured, which I envision as creating a metaphorical vacuum that drew Odium’s Investiture in. And that was the moment the Everstorm began to form. I do think she needs to be freed, but I don’t think it will do anything good for the coalition, at least initially.

BAM makes light, something we’ve only seen Bondsmith Spren do. She’s also been shown to manipulate Connection, something else associated with Bondsmith Spren. I don’t think she was this originally; I think it was a natural result of Odium becoming Invested on Roshar. The interaction between Shards and planet naturally results in a ‘god Spren’ of some kind, and BAM became Odium’s as a result.

I think trapping Ba-Ado-Mishram was what caused Odium to finally become fully Invested in Roshar. Most Spren are only of two tones and Roshar now has three. I think this lack of resonance is what’s creating Deadeyes. And I think Sja-Amat has been curing Deadeyes by adding something of Odium to them, so that they resonate fully with Roshar again. I also think BAM is Odium’s bondsmith spren. I think she’s going to corrupt the Deadeyes when released, but instead of leaving them free -like Sja-Anat does - she’s going to control them and use them against the Radiants.

Kelsier has always been written as a neurological psychopath though, and that does come across in the books. His being a terrible administrator who doesn’t do much oversight is also evident in TFE (thank Preservation for Dockson!) as is his preference for autonomous crews. The age thing is also from TFE. Vin was 16 and Spook 15. And the society clearly has a lot of Regency era elements.

Doesn’t everyone? The question is how much do you know you don’t know. TPBM is bemused at how many people on this thread are religious/traditional Jews.

Brandon actually did the opposite in TFE: he had Kelsier spare Bilg instead of killing him. Kelsier was always written as a neurological psychopath. Brandon talks about this in his annotations. Lift isn’t a child though. She’s fifteen and a half in Scadrian years. Vin was only a few months older when she was assassinating people. Spook was younger and considered the best Tineye spy the crew had. Quite a few members of the army were teenagers. There were teenagers fighting throughout WoA and HoA and no one blinks an eye. Kelsier knows Lift’s a Knight Radiant and a combatant. In TFE Scadrial she’d be of marriageable age; hardly a child. She’s fair game to him. And Mraize did ensure that Lift wouldn’t be killed, which probably factored in. It’s like taking someone from the Regency and expecting them to understand why you need to be 21 to smoke. There’s a fundamental difference in perception. Now, if Kelsier actually met Lift he’d quickly realize that her physical and psychological ages don’t match up. But he’s never met her, so he has no reason to judge her by any standard but the one he grew up with. And people grew up FAST in the Final Empire. All of which assumes he knows. Odds are he doesn’t. Kelsier was never particularly good at oversight and administration. Brandon flat out said that “Mraize doesn’t have to do what he’s told.” Kelsier has always given his crew a lot of leeway to get their jobs done as they wish. The crew around him is different than the crew away from him. He sets the goals, but he doesn’t pay heed to how those goals are carried out. For better or worse, Kelsier trusts his people. And considering the kind of people who tend to be drawn to him, that may not be the wisest course. Brandon talks quite a bit about this in the Shardcast, btw. I always imagine-you can relate it to Tor Books, they're all assassins. When Tor really functioned well, back in the 90s, it's because Tom Doherty could keep a close eye on everything. And he liked his editors being a little bit in competition with each other. And he structured his organization so that if you picked an author who did well, you got bonuses, based on how well the authors did which is just a way of working that could really lead to an unhealthy office environment, if you think about it. But if you have Tom there making sure that that doesn't become the case, and if you have Harriet watching and making it a good incentive, not a bad incentive, then it all works really well and you have one of the strongest sci-fi publishers that's ever existed, because everybody was incentivised to find really good stuff. But they were corralled by Tom Doherty and he kept it from becoming toxic. But now that Tom retired I think they're changing a lot of that, because its grown too big for one person to watch over. And it's the same thing with Kelsier, in an immediate organization of Kelsier's you're gonna find a well bonded crew of people hand picked who are going to work together as a team, and you aren't going to have to worry about too much about backstabbing - less than average for the type of organization that they are. But if his structure is outside of his direct manipulation, the type of people who would be attracted to the organization he makes... Chaos ...are not gonna be nice. He got what he wanted, which was being able to capture her, which was not that easy, he would say. So he deserves to have whatever reward, because it was quite a difficult enterprise on his part. She is not easy to capture. You know those Scadrians gotta keep an eye on things, they like to metal.

Kelsier managed to survive being dusted by virtue of being too stubborn to die... again. Well, by virtue of being a Sliver. His new body was dusted, but his soul isn’t going Beyond unless he wants it to. He was rather annoyed at getting stuck in the Cognitive Realm again though. I’m not surprised you didn’t realize. It was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in a random Shallan chapter.

Rial acts rather Scadrian-like. It’s possible he might be from there.

One thing I love about Assassins’ Creed is that they did try to at least do local accents. So Middle Eastern accents for AC1 (except Altair, but that can be argued as an animus glitch; he gets one later), Italian for AC2, actual Mohawk accents in AC3, etc. Which is what made Unity really inexplicable... (Seriously, UBISOFT is a French company. But no French accents?!) It definitely makes the experience more immersive for me. As it is, I know I can’t listen to SA ever. The lack of a ‘Kh’ sound would drive me nuts. I don’t think I’ve ever pronounced Kholin without the ‘Kh.’ Is it REALLY that hard to pronounce?
