Guess That Cosmere Character! Forum Edition!

Straff Venture? -
Can I say that I hope it’s not Moash? Kaladin already makes me suicidal and Moash thinks in a similarly fatalistic manner. It’s already somewhat dangerous for me to read the books; adding Moash to Kaladin would massively up the risk factor. Why can’t they ever stop being nihilistic and miserable?! And no, depression is not a good reason for a character to think that way. There are optimistic depressed people. Why can’t people write OPTIMISTIC depressed characters? Is it so hard to imagine that you can be hopeful and depressed?!

Would Marsh be going a bit mad in Era 2+ from language shift?

One with a perfect alibi. I doubt Kell would do it though; he needs Brandon to write his story. -

Kelsier does not believe in the God Beyond... mostly. He does in the sense that he wants to believe something’s Beyond, but he doesn’t actually think there is. He is, however, well aware of Brandon’s existence. And has threatened him on occasion (probably). -

Kelsier: No, Brandon changed his mind so you were never dead. Good thing too, or I would have had to kill him, which might have caused some problems. -
Kelsier laughed. “I’m not going to let us fall, Sage. I do actually know what I’m doing; I’ve had centuries to practice, after all.” He kept the rest of their flight smooth and even anyway, dropping her off a block away from the inn. “Tell Ganache to meet me at the church,” he ordered Sage as they landed.

Kelsier grinned at her. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Even 300 years later... it still doesn’t feel real some times.” He pushed against the ground, arcing upward and forward, cradling the woman in his arms. They reached the peak of the parabola and he let them free fall, arcing downward. There was something wonderfully liberating about giving yourself up to air and gravity, if only for a moment. Then he pushed against the metals in the ground again, gently slowing them.

Food and shelter cost more than labor, as the factory owners of the North discovered. Why do you think they started freeing their slaves? If the people had to pay the Parshmen, then they would quickly have ‘fired’ them in exchange for cheap-but-intelligent labor. Or human slaves (who already get paid). Or refused to house and feed their parsh workers, instead paying them a minimal wage (equivalent to bridgemen) which would not be enough for them to subsist on - assuming they had the ability to use the money! You either pay your workers OR you house and feed them. Doing both is actually pretty uncommon for a reason: once you take out food and shelter costs, there’s basically nothing left. Ask anyone who has ever lived paycheck to paycheck.

Cataloguing in-world use of the term "cosmere"

Or by Kelsier manipulating his own religion to make it more Cosmere aware. He does want it known eventually. -
Would Marsh be going a bit mad in Era 2+ from language shift?

Kelsier: I find it rather amusing that I’m Life and you’re Death. Marsh: Because you’re the murderous psychopath and I’m not? Kelsier: I was going to say because I died and you didn’t, but that works too. Marsh was speaking from the POV of Survivorist theology, not his own opinions. Apparently he’s of mixed minds on the ‘murdering people for poor linguistic abilities’ thing. -
Kelsier nodded. “I’ll drop you off nearby. I’m going to try and avoid Marie for now. She wants space to make her decision, so I’ll respect that.” He grinned at Sage, catching her in his arms. “Hang on,” he warned, and launched them into the morning sky.

Would Marsh be going a bit mad in Era 2+ from language shift?
Kingsdaughter613 replied to robardin's topic in Mistborn
You think Marsh has problems? Kelsier (upon returning North): “I spend a few decades in the South and they completely Ruin the language?!” Note that most of the people who survived were common Skaa. Despite his claims otherwise, Kelsier spent most of his time among the nobility. That means he likely never lost his noble accent, a difference exacerbated by his time in the South. Separated from other Northern speakers likely led to his original High Noble accent returning in full, with some possible syntactic and dialectic alterations caused by extensive use of the Southern language. Also some extra-Scadrian adulteration. By the time he returned North, Kelsier was likely speaking a completely different dialect of Skaa. Marsh, at least, spoke something a lot closer to the base dialect to begin with and didn’t miss the first 70 odd years of its development. The fact that his little brother has more trouble with the language than he does likely goes a long way toward ameliorating his distaste for the linguistic shifts. -

I would avoid getting one to begin with. TPBM thinks Billy Butcherson is the best zombie. -

Allrianne. Shan Elariel. -
He smirked. “Figure it out.” It would serve her well, he hoped. People always underestimated the non-combative metals: bronze, tin, copper... but three hundred years had taught Kelsier the value and power in those abilities, some of which Scadrial had yet to discover. Although, he thought ruefully, Marsh is still the better seeker. Well, no one could be the best at everything.

Kelsier nodded, following Marie’s path with his eyes. “Here,” he said after a moment, offering a silvery ring to Sage. “Something to help you spy.”

Kelsier nodded thoughtfully. “Enslavement is hard. It breaks down the psyche until you can barely even imagine the possibility of a future. ”Of course, freedom has its own risks and its own fears. ”I hope she accepts, but I won’t be shocked if she refuses. Freedom isn’t just a state of being; it’s a choice.”

Saze. -
Kelsier’s gaze softened. “Take all the time you need. Let Ganache know I’ll meet her in the Church; I’ll give you the space you need to choose. ”I’ll talk to Sage; she’s one of mine, after all.” Kelsier let himself drop, slowing as he approached the ground. “Heard anything interesting?”

Kelsier ignored the sudden pulse of Sage’s tin. He was honestly surprised that she’d taken that long to start eavesdropping. Instead, he shook his head as he spoke to Marie. “That would take you out of Saze’s direct reach, which rather defeats the purpose of this compromise. “A year here, where you’re free and uncontrolled, to see if you can - or want - to follow my rules and work with my crew. If you don’t like it, you’d be free to leave at any time and I’ll no longer involve myself in your affairs, unless I find that you’re interfering in mine. ”If after a year you want to continue working with me, then Saze and I will hash it out then. Or I’ll smuggle you offworld.” He grinned briefly, humor flashing through his eye. “Whichever’s easier.” His face grew solemn, something dark and fierce in the depths of his eye. “I take care of my own, Marie. So long as it’s in my power to do so. ”Either way,” he turned away, looking up at the brilliant morning sky, “it’s your choice. It’s about time you were given one.” “Good food,” Eryn said simply. “Filling. Wholesome. Will enjoy.”
