Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Oversleep replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
I am not sure about that vacuum thing - your ability to breathe doesn't increase, you just store oxygenation of blood, so you need to hyperventilate, but it doesn't grant some super breath. For sailors allomantic iron is useful for different things. Put metal bracers on ropes (for example sheets, lines, halyards etc) and you can heave them without having to physically touch them - you can manage to operate whole ship by yourself! And be quick about it, too. Storming useful, I know what I'm sayin'. Feruchemical cadmium would be useful for dire situations as in man overboard, but if you have allomantic iron you can Pull yourself back on the ship. Another useful feruchemical metals would be bronze for those long watches, or brass (hypothermia is really deadly), gold is always useful, so bendalloy is. But true sailors pick feruchemical chromium to always have the wind in the sails and to win in dices- 111 replies

We don't know enough about mixing different magics together - Zahel uses Stormlight instead of Breath and Nightblood will probably feed on Stormlight, but that's it. On the other hand, as I said here, gemstones aren't really focus on Roshar. The focus on Roshar are bonding of spren and Stormlight. It's as if we said that alcohol on Scadrial is important, because it stops corrosion of metals. Investiture is filtered through sprenbond/metal. As far as magic on Roshar goes, we have beings establishing a bond with spren (Surgebinders) and beings merging with sprens (Listeners). I am not sure about fabrials, it doesn't feel like magic. More like magitech. These beings get Stormlight from highstorms, but somebody found out that gems are natural containers for Stormlight (some animals figured it out during evolution) and they are using it to carry it around. Of course, I can be wrong...

Brandon Tweaking Words Of Radiance
Oversleep replied to Kelsier Kenobi's topic in Stormlight Archive
I found a passage which indicates one doesn't have to be in the eye of highstorm to recharge Stormlight. It's just before Kaladin kills him/lets him die. -
In Polish the difference is done like this: I am happy - "Jestem szczęśliwy" ("Jestem" - "I am", "szczęśliwy" is an adjective from happiness) I am lucky - "Mam szczęście" (I got/have luck - "Mam" - "I have", "szczęście" - noun happiness/luck) But back on topic with Feruchemy: I think that while pewter and steel, or iron or tin are obvious uses in fights, since they boost your physical abilities, what truly shines is zinc. Why? Well, there is a reason why martial arts have exercises focused entirely on repeating sequences of moves. It is done so when the time comes, you won't have time to think how to choose your next attack, example: You block a punch to the side of your head, what do you do next? If you have trained this situation, your body reacts on its own. If you would have tried to figure out what to do constantly, you would lose very fast, because your reactions would be too slow. Then zinc kicks in: now you have time to properly assess your opponent's style of fighting, whether the coming attack is a feint or not, you have time to choose the best response. Combine zinc with decent training and you have a very capable fighter. Kind of like RDJ Sherlock Holmes, but during the fight, all the time. Although you can try to mimic figuring out the fight before it begins, too.

Polish. Does Compounding chromium make you somewhat of Reality Warper? You clap your hands and there it goes the butterfly effect which causes lightnings to destroy your enemies?
-
In my language both "luck" and "joy" are the same word, so I understand confusion. Tapping chromium makes you more lucky, so you have a higher chance in coin toss and things like that. You are not storing an emotion.

I posted two lines from this in Cool Lines topic, but here I will describe what it's about. Urban fantasy, where mages can choose their powers. And there is masquerade, so normal people don't know anything. What I want to do is to play with tropes a little - so the main character is not freshly initiated and the mentor teaches them things so they can stop something evil... Nope! The main character (name's Haesar) is the guy who happens to be one of the most experienced magic users around and he learned that in a year some ancient god will wake up and he isn't powerful enough to slay him. So he initiates his friends (who mostly happen to have magic potential, because magic people subconsciously are drawn to each other) and introduces them to magic. We get to see the apprentice-master relationship from the other point of view, which I feel have some plot potential. What else? A serious load of popcultural references since characters are figuring out how can they use their powers efficiently and creative. While main hero does wield power of fire, it becomes source of jokes among the team because of how cliche it is to have the leader with power of fire. People will quote TVTropes, for example. Characters will keep on commenting 'I always wanted to do that' while jumping through windows, things like that. I also want to explore themes rather glossed over in urban fantasy - for one thing, your family does not disappear, so our heroes still have to do their chores, keep up good grades... family arguments, some little disfuntionality here and there, but nothing too serious. There is also another theme which I haven't seen done yet: founding magical organizations. There was this Event (no name yet) some years ago and all of mages have disappeared, but not before initiating new generation and teaching them basics. I imagine some cosmic entity recruited them for some battle for the universe or something, it's irrelevant. But that means there are no rituals and traditions left, all the established magic governments, associations and such no longer exist and these new mages (let's call them Gen0) are on their own. They are mostly scattered around the country and most of them start some teams in their cities (superhero analogy intended). I want to look at the process of setting up social networks, figuring out rules and authorities... I want them to hold meetings pararell to Anime&Manga or sci-fi/fantasy convents, because if something goes wrong and somebody sees them, people will just think "Those damnation drunk cosplayers, why are they running around with swords?!". Some part of the book will be people figuring out how the magic works, because... 'You can't just absorb cold for fuel, coldness isn't a thing! There is just heat, enthropy says that...' 'Well, just watch how I get energy by robbing refrigerator of its "coldness". ' and then science minded mages watch laws of physics being broken. I can have much fun with that, but I worry this will be boring for casual readers. But imagine potential for parties! Did you know that halo (the optical phenomen with the sun) is caused by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere? Well, I do have ice mages... How about playing some sport on every surface of the room, no matter the wall or the ceiling? That's gravity mages for you! And so on. About magic: So, generally magic works because people think it works. Bear with me, it's not that cliche! Well, every human (or sentient being, haven't decided yet) bends the world a little. So, we got popculture and superheroes and fantasy and such, yeah? While nobody outrights believe in such things like, for example, swallowing metals gives you powers, people tend to judge 'this magic seems plausible and coherent' and 'this sounds like crem dung'. So there is some 'belief room' for mages and supernatural beings to exist. Mages are people who happen to have more magic in them (think Allomantic potential) so they can shape the world intentionally. But being able to do anything is not only dangerous (Reality Warping Is Not a Toy) , it's also tiresome and ineffective. So people limit their power to some specific thing like "fire" "ice" "telekinesis" and then they can cast spells quicker, safer and more effective. There is also a unofficial law that the more specific your power is, the more you can do with it. So somebody whose power is 'air' is better at controlling wind than somebody whose power is 'storm' ('water' + 'air' + 'electricity').From story-telling point of view, if superpower of being able to shoot pink heart-shaped exploding watermelons sounds stupid, the character himself will think it's stupid and will not be able to craft that power. Yeah, I just made handwavium and Rule Of Cool into one of the laws of universe. At this point somebody is probably noticing how this works with religion... If when collective of people believes something, it's true, so did religions in fact invent their gods? Who knows, but I bet that Haesar will struggle with this fact as he is a practicing Catholic.

I believe it's just a flawed theory of in-world characters - Vin was just better than regular Mistborn and much like Lerasiumborn she got more power from burning the metals (not that much that it would be so visible as in comparision with Lerasiumborn like Elend, whose Pushes and Pulls were superior to the regular ones).

My personal theory is that Radiants grow Shardplate. Like scales. It's part of them, so they can (de)/summon it at will, and dead Shardplate doesn't scream when Radiant touches it, because it isn't a dead spren.

When Szeth was using large quantities of Stormlight, his clothes froze. So it's not that.

Oversleep replied to Silverblade5's topic in General Discussion
It happened to me, too. I could shrug it off, to some level, as in "they're just trolling", but some storming voidbringer of a friend posted exactly the same thing. Do these people really can not ruin somebody else's experience? Of course, even "fake-spoilers" are annoying as hell. I like to call it Spoiler's Wager. If the spoiler is true, then you have your movie ruined. If it's not true, you also know what wouldn't happen and it still ruins the thing. -
I don't visualize things, unless something stands out - things I remember about Dalinar (when I read tWoK): around fourty, Highprince, set of Shards, two sons, doesn't remember his wife and so on... I still don't remember his hair colour (pretty sure it's black) and I am not sure if he has a beard or not. But I remembered Adolin has multicoloured hair. For me, characters are just a set of characteristics, rather than images. Unless I have seen a movie adaptation, then everything is overridden. On the other hand, I'm good with movements and such. I tend to think in images more when I invent my own stories, but still rather than seeing faces, I think about sets of characterictics (this one has a scar, this one has a dot on his iris etc).

On the other hand, the power his godmetal grants in Allomancy is seeing into the future, for colours sake! In Feruchemy it's also related to manipulation of time...Or rather getting old, which is a proces of enthropy for humans, so it's tied to Ruin. Why Preservation which is about things staying the way the are is good at seeing into the future?

Opponent held a longsword in his right hand. How wonderfully original, thought Haesar. Do all of you there have swords? Why cannot it be a dagger, even once? I'd prefer bare fists, though. He sticked his own sword into the ground. Blue fire appeared in his hands. --- That's from the first text I have ever written (it sounds like I have written more, but so far I did two short texts and one little excerpt from one I have been planning). And I'm sorry if something is off with the text, I translated it to English without consulting dictionares, so wording may be strange (I am not sure about this "sticked". How do you call an action of putting your sword into the ground so it stays upright?) Why Haesar thinks about the choice of weapon is because in this world, those with magic craft their own power. So Haesar here chose fire, and from that he build his armor (which is just a set of complex spells with "fire" as basis) and his sword. He remarks upon people being little creative, as majority runs around with swords. It's a contemporary urban fantasy with masquarade on, and magic people keep on referencing popculture. So popular choices of power are elements, or flying brick powerset and so on.

I wonder how the basic Lashing work: is the gravity pulling the object in the direction relative to the object, or is the direction relative to the original one? (Does the Windrunner point a direction or is it established as an angle from the original direction of gravity?) Examples, given infinite amount of Stormlight available. Windrunner, while being at the clouds level, Lashes himself perpendicularly to the direction he views as down: Situation 1) He will eventually get into outer space and continue to travel. Situation 2) He will establish an orbit and will stay at the fixed height from the center of mass of the planet.

Yeah, but being immortal gives you an edge. No matter what your opponent does, you shrug it off. But if you succeed, then it's for good. I can't think of a way for a living person to take on a Shard - they're not corporeal, after all.
-
First of all, I, the one who made up the "Taln is Rayse" theory, don't really believe it. I just thought it's not entirely impossible and posted it to give people something to think about. Yaezir is the name for Jezrien. The King of Heralds. Oh! I just realized something. In my language, 'j' is pronounced how 'y' is in English. So Yaezir and Jezrien were similar for me... Maybe it's the way it is with Jasnah - her name is pronounced 'Yasnah'. ------------------------ I suggest to name the person who showed up at the end of WoK "Taln" and the Herald of War "Talenelat". Well, Heralds were human and they do survive thousands of years. Tanavast may have used that mechanism which is preserving them on himself. But we have a theory-killer in the same quote icy1155 used:
-
Here you go: And then the 17thShard went insane (I guess, since I wasn't here yet at the time). I believe there are more WoBs, also with this "man who calls himself Taln" expression.

On Scadrial, everything is simple with metals here and there and everywhere. On Roshar, things get weird. For example, gemstones are used only as a way to have Stormlight available when there is no highstorm around. The Investiture is Stormlight, and gemstones only happen to be able to hold it way better than anything else (but by no means perfectly - the non-highstormed spheres go dun eventually). As we have seen, living beings use Stormlight by infusing themselves with it (fabrials doesn't count, it's technically technology). Some even evolved gemhearts as way to be able to hold it better. Of course, gemstones are storming useful, but they actually have nothing to do with Surgebinding or Voidbinding. There is no difference between Stormlight coming directly from highstorm and from gems - so why would gems be special?
