The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Oversleep replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
Storms, I love storms. Is there any place where storms are more frequent than the others (with the obvious exception of Roshar - I still can't get my probability drive to get me to imaginary reality)? Also, strong winds also work for me. -
Ah, I misunderstood that the problem was a worldbuilding one. But it's storytelling one. I'm thinking how to play around with the cliche of "meditation under waterfall". First off, how do you get a waterfall which nobody is going to disturb you at? What would be the purpose of doing it apart from being cool? It could be part of the training for water mages that they have to stop or even reverse the flow of the water... But that would be training. How to make the meditation make sense?

If Empire is isolationist or actively keeping their tech to themselves and are also geographically isolated, you can make it work.

I felt that way then I finally watched Guardians of the Galaxy (I saw it like a year later). I felt disappointed because everyone was saying it was awesome. Deadpool sometimes had humor which went over the head of everyone in the cinema... except me, cause I'm nerd enough to catch the joke about not knowing "which Xavier? Stewart or McAvoy?". Seriously, I was the only one laughing. Also, the sheer amount of references was insane. In the opening credits there was a ton of them, like Adventure Time watch. And some jokes even I didn't get, cause they're from American culture. Like the "Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret.".

Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)

Why wouldn't it? You have many different things to do; since there are multiple things you could do, atium user would also see multiple shadows as you're already acting on hints from the future. Atium vs atium produces multiple shadows because there is a mutual feedback loop. By the way, it's also described as projecting multiple shadows even without atium user around (Vin and Elend vs Inquisitor in the beginning of HoA).- 111 replies

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Oversleep replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Or, y'know, Lightweaving or something... -
Most of it comes from the discussion I had with Confused (I'm really sorry we didn't finish that). Throughout cosmere we have seen many different ways of using Investiture. I want to introduce another classification: Active and Passive (this may be what brandon calls Innate and Kinetic Investiture). Basic rule: Active use of Investiture requires flow of the power, while Passive requires static Investiture. How to imagine it: Passive use of Investiture is installing something in the car (better tires, spoilers, maybe a new engine?). Active use is pouring fuel into the tank to run the engine which makes the car ride. Nalthis Obvious example: Breaths. Passive use of Breaths is having them on yourself (not shoved anywhere). Heightenings and abilities which come with them are Passive - there is no expenditure of Investiture while the user gains passive abilites. Active use of Breaths is Awakening - while there is no change of the amount of Investiture, there is the flow of it : Breaths flow from the Awakener to the Awakened object. Now that's where things get interesting, because there is no energy spent (apart from the drained color) which would be used by Awakened objects to move. I still don't know what to make of it. Scadrial There are also Passive and Active abilities: Hemalurgy is obviously Passive. While it may seem it's about moving power around, it's use clearly indicate it's Passive, because Hemalurgic constructs gain permanent abilities and no Investiture is expended (not counting Hemalurgic decay, as it's not what I'm talking about). Having a spike shoved through body grants abilites: koloss gain strenght and that strength is permanent (in contrary to Thugs expending Investiture to become stronger). Kandra blessings also permanently grant some changes and of course regular Inquisitor spikes grant abilities stolen by that spike. Allomancy is obviously active as you constantly expend Investiture to produce effects. Feruchemy, which may seem not intuitive, is also active. It requires constant flow of Investiture to maintain the effect. Also, having more Preservation in the soul grants Allomancy. This is Passive. Sel Shaod turns people into Elantrians. That seems Passive, as there is no flow of the power, though I recall something about Dor constantly flowing through Elantrians to produce the Elantrianiness. So I am not sure about that one. AonDor, Forgery and the rest make the Dor flow through the symbol and produce effects. It's obviously Active. Roshar Things get complicated. Both because we don't know much about Roshar and also because it's weird. So, bonding/trapping/merging the spren is Passive. It grants abilities. Holding Stormlight is a mystery to me. We know that healing with it consumes Stormlight, so it's Active, but we don't know whether enhancements granted by it (better reflexes, strength, speed - basically Allomantic pewter) also consume it. Inhaling Stormlight to Surgebind is obviously Active and IIRC fabrials are similiar in that they use up Stormlight to produce effects. Now, the stormform. I agree that stormspren grant capacity to throw lightning (that's pretty obvious, since different spren grant different forms which have different abilities). So it's passive. But abilites Voidbringers show have to be Active. So I assume that Voidbinding (as in Voidbringers magic) also uses up Stormlight. I assume that merging with voidspren grants only capacity to do such and such but still need Stormlight to fuel it, because power is expended. They can't run on the Investiture the voidspren carries because it would be like Allomancer using up the Preservation in his soul to use Allomancy. Works once and after that you're stormed. So... since there was very little Stormlight in the middle of the Weeping, how did Listeners had enough of it to fuel a whole army of stormforms? Where did they get the power to cast lightnings?

So how does it work? What can you reference in your work and what you cannot? If a character sees a comic book, can I name it? If they are listening to radio, can I quote the text of the songs? If I have somebody similar to Steelrunner and that Speedrunner wants to briefly explain his power. can he say "I'm basically the Flash"? And so on, and so on. How do these things work? P.S. I want to know because I planned my stories with a lot of references to popculture.

I detest their inefficiency at communicating. Asking "Do you have someone?" takes far less words while conveying the same message. Also, I have to disagree with you on the "default mindset". It clearly is, as they first aks you whether you have a girlfriend. The thing is that they don't think of only default orientation. But given statistical data, heterosexuality is and will be the main and default orientation. I am programmer, I may have a weird perspective on things like what's default. I am so behind on MCU I still haven't seen Age Of Ultron nor Ant-man.

Did Ruin even know that Compounding is possible or (if he did) how to do it?

Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Oversleep replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
The shadows show what the person they belong to is going to do. They only change when the person intends to do something else and they only multiply when the person learns something from the future. So unless they see you charging at them with a knife, they won't react to this future where they are stabbed. In the example of stabbing somebody who's around the corner, there is no way the victim can know about you and react to you, so the shadows won't account for you.- 111 replies

We know that those so-called Bands Of Mourning didn't actually belong to Rashek. They were made by the Sovereignor, known as Survivor in the North. Kelsier. We know he survived his death and Ascended, but we don't know how he made it back to the land of the living and how he gained full Feruchemy (I'm assuming his status of Mistborn didn't change). And then I realized how could it be possible. Who do we know that could communicate with Kelsier, that had a unused at the moment body at the ready, had the power and the will to do it? Sazed. He wasn't using his body, it was in some kind of stasis (as evidenced by Leras and Ati bodies dropping after they were killed, even if they ascended thousands of years ago). So he bound Kelsier to his body by Hemalurgy. This explains how Kelsier acquired a living body and how he entered it. And this also explains where did his Feruchemy came from. And why he has a spike shoved through his eye in the first place. Of course, there is the issue of the appearance: why did Kelsier look like himself? Perhaps his Cognitive and Spiritual aspect overwrote the Physical. Maybe it was part of the Hemalurgy binding (as we know, Hemalurgy twists recipients and this seems quite easy - body without soul and mind and Shadow with mind and soul - most of the inhuman effects of twisting comes from multiple human attributes overlapping). Maybe he used some kind of Feruchemy to do this (Compound gold so much that the body heals to match the Identity he could also Compound). There's another issue: why did Sazed was able to bring Kelsier back but not Vin and Elend? Maybe he had time to learn how to do this, maybe they just went Beyond in contrast to Kelsier who stayed. My headcanon until proven wrong.

Fixed. But seriously, why did it go from 52% to 51%? -
I just finished Gravity Falls. I just understood why Ruin is neither good or evil: When things end, it hurts, but they can't be complete without ending. Now excuse me while I go to curl up.

My point is that electrum shadows won't show you that. I believe that every electrum shadow shows you making a different choice without any external input. (See the topic I linked, I explain there the whole concept of electrum shadow vortex)- 111 replies

I am very... nasty (is it a good word?) towards the whole "Voidbinding is not the Voidbringers magic, because Voidbringing is". So let's just say my opinion is that what Voidbringers do is Voidbinding. I also believe that if we speak from purely analytical view on Investiture and stuff, correct term for Listeners with voidspren is Voidbinders and "Voidbringers" is a term humans attribute to them cause they tend to bring a Desolation with them when they show up. (It's basically the difference between Surgebinder and Knight Radiant - KR is a term invented for fully realized Surgebinders and later it became interchangeable with Surgebinders and so we had the organization under the name of KR) However, I feel very confused about the WoB that we haven't seen Voidbinding yet (anybody care to link it?). So I think that since that Everstorm we witnessed is something new and not the way it happened before, I can believe there is something strange going on. Maybe stormform is just some kind of "starter voidform" and only after they brought the Desolation they will start taking on true voidforms and show us some Voidbinding.

FINE! I'LL LISTEN TO IT! ON THE WEEKEND! ...I'm sorry. It's just the whole SoS / BoM situation again, when the whole Shard is talking about something and I don't know why. Eh, it's probably good, right?- 1963 replies

Hey, buying others drinks is a very honorable thing to do. Totally Honor is the patron.

Stormfather confirmed that forms of power are indeed Voidbringers. We haven't seen much of Voidbringers and I'm pretty sure none of them did more than throw lightnings. Perhaps throwing lightnings is not a manipulation of Ten Surges, but something related to summoning Everstorm.

Obtaining the magic is the factor the most tied to the Intent of the Shard. Sel: you have to be of right blood (connection; of the right nationality) and place. This ties well into Dominion/Devotion and patriotism (there was a nice fleshed out theory explaining it). Nalthis: to gain Breaths they have to be Endowed to you. Scadrial: Snapping is basically self-preserving instinct and power preserves the piece of Preservation in you. Hemalurgy requires ruining both the donor and recipient. Feruchemy is about ruining yourself (storing) to be able to later preserve yourself (tapping). Now, Roshar: Surgebinders attract spren by specific behaviour and strenghten their bond by swearing Oaths - very Honor things. Also (it now struck me) since Cultivation seems to be about growth and life... well, Surgebinders form symbiotic relationship with the spren, with both 'organisms' benefiting. But Voidbinding doesn't make much sense - while normally Listeners attract the spren they want by correct attitude and Song, voidspren bonded only by virtue of Listener being open to bond a spren. It didn't require the Listener to show attitude which could be linked to Odium. Perhaps human could create a bond with Voidspren (thus creating a hack in Surgebinding similarly to malatium being used in Allomancy) by attracting it be being hateful or something like that. The powers it would grant? Remember the WoBs: 1) all magic on Roshar is tied to manipulating Ten Surges 2) malatium is gold fueled by Ruin I think it would grant access (in a twisted way) to the same Surges the Voidbringer would be able to access.

KNEEL BEFORE ZOD PINK! also, "Fear" makes quite a good Epic name.

Autonomy - freedom fighters, revolutionists, all the people that are (should be) independent from governments and watch them. Oh, so probably also hackers. And Anonymous.

Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Oversleep replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
Yeah, but atium let's you see what the other person is gonna do. If he changes his mind, the shadow changes. The only situation when shadows split is when the other person changes his mind based on a clue from the futuresight. I made a topic explaining that. So let's say you see atium shadow of person who is around the corner and you use the knowledge from atium shadow to stab him. His atium shadow won't change, won't be showing a person lying on the ground with a hole in the chest, but will still show a person merryingly walking.- 111 replies
