Hoid is using his bead of Lerasium as a Metalmind
hoidhunter replied to Kadrok's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've really been wondering where the first allomancers and feruchemists came from to begin with. I mean...I know about Rashek giving beads of lerasium to his allies and taking one for himself...but there were feruchemists around before the ascension...as well as allomancers. Alendi had a hemalurgic spike in him that made him a seeker (he may have also been one beforehand) so there must have been an allomancer around to make the spike from...right? Also...I like the whole "tapping lerasium makes you into a feruchemist" thing...makes sense in a way...and explains why there were a lot of full feruchemists in the terris culture early on. On a separate (but similar) note...when the crystal in the pits of hathsin produce atium...it actually produces a geode that contains atium inside of it...perhaps the weird pottery that was enclosing all of the beads of lerasium is a similar thing. -
What about anal sodium? Adonalsium could be an anagram for anal sodium...that would make a good story...a magical universe created by butt salt...

Who in the Cosmere so far is the Most Evil?
hoidhunter replied to Xaladin's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I'm going with Wyrn. Manipulating a religion in order to facilitate mass genocide and the conquest of the known world sounds like something that an evil dude would do. I was a little hesitant to cast this vote since we see so little of his actual presence in the book. He may turn out to be a godking like figurehead that really isn't as bad as most people think that he is. But for now I am happy to throw him in the category of evil. Straff Venture is definitely a pretty evil dude...but he failed where Wyrn is succeeding... -
Wow...you leave the forum alone for a while and a whole bunch of people post replies to your thread question. Thank all! Lots of great insight. We...of course...won't get to find out for sure until Brandon let's us find out in the story...but I can definitely see where a few of you guys are coming from. Considering the WoB about it being something that comes from a different shard...not honor...coupled with the story about the nightwatcher giving someone a black sphere...could it be that it comes from cultivation? I mean...we assume that cultivation is a "good" shard...(for a few different reasons)...but the shard's intent doesn't have to be so black or white on the good bad scale. Maybe there is something sinister about cultivation that we don't know yet?

So...this may end up being one of those really short threads...but does anyone have any idea what the deal is with the dark sphere that seems to glow black...you know...the one that Gavilar gives to Szeth while he is dying? The obvious answer would be that it is somehow ties to the black spheres from Shadesmar...but...for some reason that doesn't seem quite right. Does anyone have any insight that they would care to share with me?

Also...Ruin does have a shardpool...it's the black metallic lake that Alendi mentions in one of the logbook entries...I've often wondered (in my head and on the forum) why Brandon never elaborated more on Ruin's shardpool. Somewhere on the website is an alternate ending where Vin and Elend find Ruin's shardpool while looking for the well of ascension...but even that doesn't really tell us much about it. So... Black smoke = Ruin's farts...Mist = Preservation's farts Black lake = Ruin's urine...Well of ascension = Preservaton's urine Atium = Ruins BM...Lerasium = Preservation's BM Following this line of thinking...the Pits of Hathsin were basically the cosmic version of undercooked mexican food...

Had to go with Zane...God said "Eat that sandwich and get drunk!"...so I did...God said "Take a long nap!"...so I did...God said "Kill him!"...so I...wait a minute...something's not right here...God seems really bossy today...God said "Kill him!" again...alright, alright, I'll get with the killing. Just keep your divine pants on!...And how the $!@& did I get this railroad spike in my chest?!? I'm also a little confused about the whole which metal would you want to burn part of the pole. If I want to be a feruchemist...are you asking which metal I would want to store an attribute in? Or which metal I would want to be able to compound on top of being an all around feruchemist? Because if you're asking what metal I would want to be able to burn on top of being a feruchemist...why would anyone pick allomancer? I went with Feruchimist and steel...because being able to compound steel would be totally awesome. But if I can only store 1 attribute...I totally wouldn't want that one to be steel (difficult to store and you'd use it up fast). I'd want it to be bendalloy...(best competitive eater ever!)

I guess this is a possible explanation...but I find it to be a little unsatisfying. If that is the case...does it mean that some of the first people had more preservation in them than others did? Otherwise...why would some of them be mistings while others were not?

While the whole stick obsession never "took root" with me...it seems like other fans find it "growing" on them. I wish that I could just "bark" at people until they stop...but some things just "refuse to change". I feel that the "staff" in particular are reluctant to "switch" to a different weird obsession. It probably "stems" from a fear of "branching" out. Maybe if this "post" had a "pole" attached...we could figure out why the stick is so "poplar". I hate to be a "birch" about it...but "shoot"...can we just stop "pine-ing" over the stick already?- 26 replies

In the mistborn trilogy..."snapping" refers to the act of putting a person under a lot of trauma in order to wake up any latent allomantic potential. When the mists are snapping people, they are not giving people allomancy...they are actually hurting them...to wake up the allomancy that has more or less been sleeping. This is why some of the people that preservation attempts to snap actually die...and why he didn't just make every single person in the army (or world) into an allomancer. Preservation cannot just give a person powers...they have to obtain it through genetics or through the ingestion of lerasium. ie...the mist spirit gets Vin to feed the lerasium bead to Elend...it doesn't just say "presto!" and he's a mistborn...right? In the earlier part of the story...they talk about how noble houses will have their children beaten to within an inch of their lives when they reach a certain age to see if they have any powers. Someone can have the potential to be an allomancer...but go their entire lives without ever knowing about it...because they never snap. What I am wondering about...is where lerasium comes from. We know from reading the story that the lord ruler found a bunch of beads of the stuff at the well of ascension, and gave them to his most trusted supporters, turning all of them (as well as himself) into full mistborn. Through the generations, this gift of allomancy is passed down genetically, and eventually starts getting diluted, resulting in mostly mistings with the occasional full mistborn, with all of their raw power being drastically less than the original one's who ingested the lerasium. Now...I am perfectly aware that lerasium is pure concentrated essence of preservation...but what I find to be particularly curious...is that there were mistings around BEFORE the lord ruler's ascension...before he found the lerasium beads. So how did these mistings come to have powers in the first place? I don't know that there is any WoB out there that is going to give us a definite answer...I'm just looking for speculation.

I've wondered about this...but I don't know if it would quite work...but could tapping weight (increasing your density) protect you from rapid decompression in the vacuum of space...likewise...could it keep you from being crushed by atmospheric pressure while deep water diving? If you are using stored breath while diving...do you have to worry about the bends?

What command would you give nightblood

Following the posts about Nazi nightblood I can't help but go all black panther and say "kill Whitey". (I'm just joking I hope no one finds that offensive) Hunt Hoid! -
Shadows of self: Wayne gets out of the justice bizz and tries his hand at stand-up comedy, the lights on stage produce multiple shadows Bands of Mourning: Everyone on 17th shard is so sad that this is what the book is actually about that they form together in groups to commit mass suicide. Lost Metal: With no living fans to support him, Brandon Sanderson is forced to pawn all of the ridiculously expensive bling he secretly spends all of his money on... ...while it might be deserved...I would appreciate it if no one downvoted me for this...

I think you may be right. Having arms that appear to be too long for someone's body is a very odd thing to point out about a person unless it is a secret hint about something. Also...his manner of speech is very polite and pleading...docile even...very unusual for a bridgeman...but pretty much standard for a terrisman. Replace each instance of brightness with mistress and it sounds like Sazed talking to Vin. WEZ definitely gets an upvote...

I a big supporter of Feruchemy over Allomancy as being way more practical for use in the real world. I am a big outdoors person myself...and one of the most difficult things about going hiking in the back country is how much stuff you have to bring. Food, water, warm clothes, shelter, navigation tools, climbing equipment, first aid supplies. This seriously limits how far and fast you can go...because you have to haul around all of this crap...and you can't very well drive a 4x4 truck loaded with supplies down a "leave no trace trail" cutting through the back country of yellowstone. I would love if I could just : Spend a couple of days sick and slow and weak and deaf and blind... Memorize a couple of topographical maps... hit an all you can eat buffet followed by a long sit in a very hot sauna... Now...your survival equipment has shrunk from 120lbs of junk in a backpack into a handful of jewelry and a chainmail under shirt. I would absolutely love this...

What about any of the other benefits of pewter aside from strength, warmth, speed, and healing ability. Balance(or maybe Grace) fall on your face with every footstep while storing but you can tap it and sprint across a tightrope. or perhaps...coordination...same idea but also extended to the dexterity of your hands?

I'm reminded of a quote from Wayn's World... "If you hurl and she comes back, she's yours. If you blow chunks and she bolts, then it was never meant to be." Talk about armored defecation all you want man...the good one's will still stick around.

Plot to Destroy Adonalsium - CONFIRMED BY BRANDON
hoidhunter replied to imriel452's topic in Cosmere Discussion
source Spoiler By the way...I find this elaboration of Odium's reasoning to be fascinating. I've been wondering why someone who was more or less the god of hate would be intimidated by someone who was a hopeless non- activist. (even one wielding incredible cosmic might)...but this makes sense. Follow me now...if Sazed were to to drop harmony...and someone who was not yet influenced by the intent of harmony were to pick it up...they would be able to take on Odium. Much like how preservation wouldn't do much about Ruin...because he just preserves things. However, immediately after Vin picks it up...she comes at him swinging...- 66 replies

I found this to be a little confusing as well. so...there were spren on Roshar before adonalsium shattered. But there are not necessarily "adonalsium spren". pretty soon your feeding cat and dogs to homeless people...and vice versa... You would have to either be really confident in your self control...have no idea what you were getting yourself into...downright evil in the first place...or think that it was going to be temporary... "All right guys...each of us has to hold one of these things until Hoid can get back with enough cosmic superglue to put this whole stupid thing back together. How long did you say it was going to take?" (looks at Hoid) (Hoid shrugs) "Ah...I'm sure we'll be fine..."

I would have to say that the answer is probably no...after all...Honor is dead...and the honor blades still work. But who knows...maybe nightblood can suck the investiture right out of them until they are just a really ornate and REALLY heavy swords. Or perhaps a larkin and suck all of the investiture out of someone who is bonded with them until they do not work anymore...but I get the feeling that this is probably not the case. Just sayin'

I have only my own suppositions to base this on...but I personally feel that...aside from Harmonium...atium (and maybe even lerasium) may be making a reappearance in the world. If Sazed (harmony) were to reconstruct the pits of hathsin...he would be able to siphon off enough of his ruin side so that he would be more able to act in a preservative way...and vice versa.
