  1. Once again...I am inclined to agree
  2. So...all in all...I can definately see some significant similarites between Shadows and Dusk. I would say that maybe Brandon just wrote them close together, and was therefore in the same creative "place"...but they were actually published about a year apart. I guess the publication date dosen't really tell us when he actually convieced of and wrote them though. Especially since one is found in a collection of short stories...not an independent work like Sixth of Dusk. By the way...an up vote to the first person who can tell me where my "angry man" post came from...
  3. While I am hardly an authority on the subject...I would have to guess that the answer is no. If you read further back into this thread...you will find a Brandon Sanderson quote that indicates that a kandra's use of bones is strictly utilitarian and does not in any way spiritually connect the kandra to the bones previous owner. There is another that mentions that kandra are basically thinking people who have a block or breaks that inhibits them from thinking like a person. Recieving a blessing simply fixes that break and restores them to a more sentient state...the spikes themselves don't imprint a personality on them. but here's an upvote for thinking outside the box
  4. Angry man: WHADDAYOU WANT? Man: Well, Well, I was told outside that... Angry man: DON'T GIVE ME THAT, YOU SNOTTY-FACED HEAP OF PARROT DROPPINGS! Man: What? A: SHUT YOUR FESTERING GOB, YOU TIT! YOUR TYPE MAKES ME PUKE! YOU VACUOUS TOFFEE-NOSED MALODOROUS PERVERT!!! M: Yes, but I came here for an argument!! A: OH! Oh! I'm sorry! This is abuse!
  5. I do have to agree that...from what we've seen anyway...AoL seems to be setting up the story for it's jump into the modern era. Maybe the whole Set kidnapping women thing is just a plot device to re-introduce an element into the future version of the story. That being said...how are Wax and Wayne going to tangle with the Set in the next couple of books. (by the way...I think it's awsome that the next two books are coming out so close together) Are the members of the Set going to remain shrouded in mystery...with our heros simply tangling with their goons...or are we going to seem Wax's uncle get taken down?
  6. I could definately be wrong. But it's fun to try and guess where the story is going. And what would be the fun is guessing if you easily abandoned your theroies. Totally have respect for your guys' opinions...but at the same time...it's fun to debate.
  7. Lord Tarvash Shar (by the way...my auto correct thinks that your name is garbage what) May be onto something with his shard pools changing idea. Preservation and Ruin combined to become harmony. Why wouldn't the well of ascension combined with pits of hathsin produce something other than atium? Maybe the "final metal" to be added to the world of allomancy? I also feel that it is safe to say that atium is lost to the people of scadrial "for now". (assuming that garbage what ((trying to be funny)) is wrong.) Just because the generally accepted embodiment of death has something stuck in his body does not mean that it's use hadn't been lost to the world of allomancy in general (try taking it from him). Lerisum is also (possibly...how should I know) the first allomantic metal. Not the "final metal". -directed at voidus- do you agree that the quote about a "final metal" and the title "the lost metal" seem to insinuate that a new metal will be introduced into Wax and Wayne's world of allomancy?
  8. Sorry I kind of breezed over mckeedees post. This is much more likely than my idea. I also like the idea of using bendalloy to speed up the gestation of an unborn child. Clever. Up votes sirs.
  9. Dude...17th shard has definitely NOT helped me ween myself off of Sanderson books. Every time I learn something new, or hear someone else's interesting theory, I end up rereading a book. I'm now just perpetually in the middle of rereading all of them. anyway...kaymyth gets and upvote for humor...
  10. Using emotional allomancy to make your co-workers argue with you...just because you're bored at work. (by the way...I'm bored at work...and wish I had emotional allomancy)
  11. Do you see what you did Arthur Dent...now people are upset! By the way...Holy Crap! We can send each other personal messages! Did you know that?
  12. I also like this idea...those Deus Ex Machina occurrences would bother me a little less if there was an actual explanation for why they happened. Newan gets an upvote...
  13. By the way...does anyone else really like the idea of a god who's only two rules are: -sit (or whatever) and think for a few minutes every day with this earring in -do whatever the #$%^ you think is right While I'm not a very spiritual person...I would totally become a "pathian"...if nothing else you get a cool earring for signing up...
  14. RIGHT! A Guide for Expecting Parents of a Potential Allomancer: Rule#1- Never let ANY allomantically viable substance ANYWHERE near you child until they are old enough to understand and follow simple instructions. Rule#2- Don't be disappointed with your aluminum gnat...it's not their fault they suck. Rule#3-If your son/daughter turn out to be a Rioter/Soother...you will want to hire a Smoker to be nearby at all times.(although...I guess that wouldn't help YOU much...oh well.) But seriously...what do you guys think the Set is REALLY planning?
  15. When does "for now" end...it's been six year already in our timeline...and many many more than that in the story... -Ooklalhoo'Elin...I like your point as well. So we have... FOR -Home to (possible guarded by) a new variation of Koloss -Rumored to hold rare valuable metal -Named similar to Pits of Hathsin -Named similar to Elantris -"bearers of the final metal" quote from Miles -Working name for subsequent book is "The Lost Metal" (atium is the only metal that we know has been lost) AGAINST -WoB "The Well (and the small wells in the Pits) is no more. For now at least." - Weirywriter's point about the pits of hathsin being created by preservation as a way to siphon off ruin's power. Am I missing anything?
  16. As a new first time father...I can say that having a 4 month old who is a pewter arm would suck. "Now, now...Daddy REALLY doesn't like it when you break his fingers in your cute little hands."
  17. upvote for well formed thoughts... Since you address whether or not ebay is a good place to get metal for Allomancy...it brings me to another one of the reasons why I would go with Feruchemy. In order to safely use allomancy (regularly) you would have to be an expert metallurgist...and you would need a space to work in. Trying to burn improper alloys can be ineffective...or even potentially lethal...and there would be no way to know if it was the exact right ratio for safe allomancy without trying it...or having it custom made. However...Sazed appears to be able to use any variation of steel or iron without any risk to his person. I assume that this means he can use variations of all the other metals as well. For this reason alone...I argue that Feruchemy is superior for every day use.
  18. Well...if it's a cultural phenomenon that people on Scadrial refer to caves as pits...there are a lot of people in mistborn who aren't hip to that particular trend. The term caves is used repeatedly by different characters. The Pits of Hathsin and the Pits of Eltania are the only two geographic locations referred to in such a way...but...that was a relatively small point in my argument anyway. Tell me...if I were to tell you that "I am done posting to this thread for now." ...would you, or would you not expect to see another post from me? (eventually)...(maybe 6 years from now) If anything...I would say that the WoB we are referring to actually seems to heavily imply that the Pits of Hathsin definitely will reappear in the story.
  19. Agreed...on the main point anyway Brandon has gone out of his way to make the pits of elantia a part of the story. When writing a story, you have absolute control over what you include and what you leave out. Good writers (I think Brandon qualifies) make sure that EVERYTHING (or at least close to it) bears significance to the story. While you can say...maybe it's just a coincidence that they are called the pits of something...Brandon could just as easily called them the caves of something. To me...the specific word choice implies something. After reading the name Hoid in a few different stories, did you say to yourself "Man...this writer really likes the name Hoid" or did you say to yourself "Wow...this same guy is in all these books! What's going on?" The Only Joe, on 18 Dec 2014 - 07:51 AM, said: And by the way...your WoB actually says that the pits are no more...for now. Again, I have to point out the importance of specific word choice.
  20. True...he does indeed express some backstabbing intent in his internal monologue...(you just can't trust super villains) On a different note: Begin Wild Conjecture Breeding allomancers from unwilling women is not only horrible...it is incredibly time consuming. You have to wait 9 months after conception...then you have to raise a kid all brainwashy to do your bidding...you don't even know for sure that all of the kids that are born will be allomancers...you're going to have some duds...(although now that snapping has changed, do children just wake up one day with superpowers?)...anyway...sounds like a lot of work to produce minimal results. I would think that it would almost be easier and faster just to find and hire a bunch of mistings. I propose that the Set plans to follow this process up to a point...then use hemalurgy to steal the abilities from the unfortunate kiddies. In a world where there are no more full mistborn (I get the feeling that this may change at some point in the story...but for now)...this would allow you to produce the only people in the world who possess more than one allomantic ability.
  21. I'm with you on this man...it's probably not true...I just like it when authors go all "Never Ending Story" and make characters in the book aware of what is going on in the real world. While what I'm about to say is also probably not true...I'm just putting it out there. Since Brandon is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints...maybe he's making some of his characters believe in the existence of God in our world. by the way...sanderfan gets an up vote for thinking "meta"
  22. I like this "the nature of the shard pool may have changed"...We know that Miles says something at the end of the book about "the final metal" and as per a recent update on brandonsanderson.com the current working title for the last book is "the lost metal." While this may be wild speculation on my part, I suspect that Atium (or some godmetal) may be making a return sometime before the story is finished. by the way...gjustice99 gets an upvote for intuing foreshadowing.
  23. Well... in the case of a pulser...being able to generate a larger bubble AND greatly increase the rate of time compression would be fairly significant. (spoiler alert) In the case of the big fight at the end of AoL...Marasi succeeding in trapping Miles depended on Wax being able to kill all other baddies in the warehouse, because anyone else being outside the bubble would ruin the plan...but...if said bubble were large enough to encompass the entire warehouse and expanded time inside to a much higher ratio, the plan would have been drastically easier and less dangerous to pull off. She swallows a whole LOT of cadmium, a pinch of duralumin, gets carried into the warehouse in a train car (BLIP) cops are there. I am also assuming that the amount of metal in your stomach varies the strength of the burst created by burning duralumin. If you only have a tiny bit of cadmium, the duralumin burst will be barely noticeable...if you are filled to the brim with the stuff...you will be able to produce a greater effect. Or am I mistaken in this assumption Oh Grand High Knowers of all things? (playfulness not sarcasm)
  24. This is rather epic...now when I inevitably read shadows of self in one day, I'll only have time to reread it 2 or 3 times before something new comes out in only a few months...(I may have a problem)...(is this a fan forum or a support group?)
  25. You could use copper for this in some situations...ie I don't remember if your husband was there or not (I just stored the night at the bar in my metal mind) anyway...use feruchemy to store 17th shard respect...store all of your up votes so you can post appearing to be a new member...then when someone questions your theory...reveal that you are a DAWNSHARD ranked member!
