The true Voidbringers? The Shin?
The One Who Connects replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not directly. -
Partially because it's still a subject of discussion/disagreement, but mostly, there are a lot of pages that need updating in the wake of Oathbringer, so there'll be incomplete pages for a while.
-
So, there was this rather old discussion(that I'm having trouble finding) about how Kal might have resaid his earlier Oaths off-screen before swearing the Third Oath near the end of WoR. Given how Shallan appears to have lost her progress and had to resay her Oaths in order to progress, I'd say Kaladin probably had to speak his earlier Oaths too.

[OB] Swearing on Roshar (Oathbringer Edition)
The One Who Connects replied to ccstat's topic in Stormlight Archive
Upon further examination, I don't find this one as all that odd anymore. Talik is a Reshi, but we know he spent time in Thaylenah learning to be a merchant. Per the Coppermind, Thaylenah is primarily a Vorin nation, in spite of the Passions. Spending a good deal of time in a Vorin nation would probably help one pick up some choice curses from it. Maybe we can use that as a clue, if we see any other foreigners using Vorin curses. -
I found ishar and Chana!!!!!
The One Who Connects replied to Steeldancer's topic in Stormlight Archive
The OB Spoiler board still has.. way too many topics I haven't looked at yet, so I missed the thread where you realized that. However, the OB Spoiler mentions "varied lore." I find it entirely possible that the term has gotten conflated with Chana over the centuries. Jezrien and Kalak have been equated with the Stormfather in Vorin/Natan lore over time too, so why not this too? Between the Desolations, the Recreance, the Hierocracy, and the fire in the Palanaeum, there have been too many losses of knowledge for it to be ruled out. -
why do people only ever carry a few bottles of metals with them
The One Who Connects replied to Zape's topic in Mistborn
And as has been stated, that's not how it works. More Impact Force(which you'd get from more weight) makes you more likely to break something solid. Flexible objects(like silk) will bend with the object they are being hit with, regardless of it's weight. That's why I used a bat and a sword in my example, to highlight the difference that actually mattered: Shredding something requires a sharp edge, plain and simple. If doesn't matter if you have a silk shirt, a strip of paper floating in the wind, or rope laying on the ground. Unless the object you are hitting them with has a cutting edge, they will simply bend around it, regardless of the weight they are struck with. Sword, knife, tomahawk, the weight of the weapon is irrelevant. if it isn't sharp enough, it doesn't "rip," "shred," or "tear" the target. Wooden Warstaffs. Wooden Dueling Canes. Obsidian Axes. Obsidian/Glass Knives. My point about tech largely moving away from metal holds up(The Koloss being an exception). I don't know why people have metal swords, come to think of it. It's illogical. The only reason Elend managed to keep his sword in the battle against Marsh is because "something" prevented Marsh from pushing it away. Why is stone relevant? Hasn't stone weaponry been discussed well enough already? A Mistborn could just as easily stab in the open spaces by your armpits, your neck, or any of a dozen other open spaces in conventional armor. Open spaces covered by silk armor made into the shape of conventional clothing. That was my point. You'd be protecting your head anyway(because it's important), so only having to focus on protecting your head would be better than having to defend myriad number of places at once, in my opinion. I read the scene before making my prior post. He had been fighting Koloss for hours, and his pewter ran out after starting his fight with Marsh. His steel hadn't run out yet either. He still had his metals during the start of his fight with Marsh, and Vin starts fueling him after his pewter runs out. He had enough metals on him to fight for hours(replenishing his Atium when he ran low). -
You're equating the flashback character of a book with the order the book will focus on. They are two separate things, and Brandon has directly stated that they will not always match up. All the WoB says is that the book will have a flashback character, and that the book will focus on an Order. 4. Shalash could be a member of literally any of the Orders, or none of them, during her flashback book, and we learn about Dustbringers from a different member of the primary three viewpoints(like Kal/Shallan in WoK/WoR). 5. Shalash could be dead at the time of her book(like Eshonai), and we learn about Dustbringers from whoever replaces her in the primary viewpoints. 6. Shalash x Dustbringer romance/professional relationship, allowing us to learn about Dustbringers from a more minor character involved in the main narrative. (Kinda like if we'd been learning about Shallan's order from Adolin's PoV of her, so Brandon can switch it up on us) 7. Literally anything else that would lead us to learn about the Dustbringers, so long as it is interspersed with Shalash's flashbacks in a way that makes sense. Nothing Brandon has stated prevents any of these, but everyone seems to think it automatically has to be option 1, which is why I've gone back to using the phrase "connecting dots that aren't necessarily there."

[OB] Eshonai's Screaming
The One Who Connects replied to SpeakoftheDeval's topic in Stormlight Archive
On the subject of Szeth's Screams: So that(and possibly Dalinar's) have to do with the SR. How different is what happens to them from Eshonai? That kinda question should tell you if it's a similar case with her or not. -
I found a WoB that says otherwise.

Two Windrunners can disagree on whether an Oath has been kept. But in terms of whether you would retain your powers, your Spren would have to agree that you are maintaining the Oaths. (Although I don't think we know what would happen if your Spren felt it was okay but you didn't think so. Might be something to ask Brandon sometime)

why do people only ever carry a few bottles of metals with them
The One Who Connects replied to Zape's topic in Mistborn
As mentioned by Kingsdaughter, the common people weren't exactly the type to carry swords. This holds for most any period of history, and doubly so on Scadrial, where the existence of Metalborn sparked tech progress away from metal weaponry out of necessity. Swords that aren't metal aren't the most effective things, and with the advent of the dueling cane, the sword may as well fade into obscurity. Knives are where it's at, and that's not likely to change. What you are saying is that you can cut through something just as easily with a lead baseball bat as you can with a katana. That's not how shredding/cutting works. If you have a long strip of paper held taught between two points, then the impact of the bat will probably rip it, while the katana will cut it. However, if you are swinging at a strip of paper floating in the wind, the katana blade might still cut it, but the bat will not. The paper will fold around the bat and be fine. Fabric will do the same, which is why sharpness matters. Shirts tear when they get caught on something, and a blunt weapon isn't gonna do that. Watch people fight sometime, grabbing/pulling at clothing will rip them, while punches wont. Blunt weaponry is like those punches. Lastly, the impact will not "pull the silk off." Anything fashioned into armor would be worn in such a way that it can't just be ripped off(straps, ties, etc..), and in the case of silk armor, it can be fashioned into a shirt or vest, with sleeves and everything. You aren't ripping a shirt off someone by hitting it with a baseball bat or a sword or anything. With exception to maybe two very specific circumstances, it's not physically possible. Bringing it back to my baseball bat vs katana bit from earlier: The baseball bat could dent a metal chestpiece(and possibly bend/crack a wooden one, depending on quality), while a silk one will conform to the bat and come out intact. Yes, silk armor does not absorb the impact as well as solid armor, but it has less risk of being badly hindered by a battle staff or dueling cane. The difference between types of armor will always be a game of tradeoffs. Additionally, Mistborn have pewter to help with the pain(somewhat) Regarding aiming for the head, any solid armor will have more open spots a Mistborn could shove a knife into, because solid armor has to allow space for movement. A helmet doesn't prevent a Mistborn from aiming for those chinks, so the argument is moot. As previously stated, more tradeoffs. Personally, the armor with less weak spots seems like the better option to me. Not to intentionally use this excuse for the third time, but the tech progression of the Final Empire is a little lopsided. For all we know, they might not be that good at ceramics. Another possible explanation is that the people who craft and sell glass knives to Mistborn are also in the glass vial business. More products, more profit. More specifically, she started fueling him when his pewter ran out, and his other metals as they began to run out later. So whatever amount of vials he was carrying on him were enough for quite a bit of fighting against the Koloss until after Marsh showed up. How does this affect your outlook on how much a Mistborn really needs to carry on them? -
Jasnah's Eyes on the Oathbringer Cover
The One Who Connects replied to Obadiah's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh almost certainly. But I don't have a WoB saying that, so I can't say that with any authority. (I like to give answers when I can, and assumptions only when I can't)- 11 replies

In the annotation I quoted, Brandon said that the geographical and magnetic poles on Scadrial were originally coupled. So when Rashek moved the magnetic pole(The Well and Luthadel) south from where it used to be, the geographical pole(remaining where it was) would be north of Luthadel. Brandon then mentioned that Rashek created the Terris Mountains north of Luthadel, so I equated the two. That's probably me connecting dots that aren't necessarily there, but I thought it made sense. I knew the N/S had swapped, but I wasn't aware it was physically drifting. That's cool.
-
I did say "near." It's close enough, since the actual North Pole appears to be around the Terris Mountains. (At least, that's how I interpreted this) Either way, my point was that since the Burnlands completely separated the North and South, they would be a more equatorial-style desert rather than a small(in comparison) place like the Sahara. When you are way up North, no matter what way you go, you start going towards that equatorial desert eventually. I'll admit I worded it a little poorly, but i thought i got the general gist across.

As mentioned, Shallan and Hoid count as Lightweavers, as might have been the apothecary fellow(we really do put every character under suspicion, don't we?) However, there is another WoB regarding people seeing Lightweavers. We, the readers, have not seen another KR Lightweaver beyond Shallan.

Make what you will of this: I swear there was a WoB to the effect that the bond wouldn't lose/change functionality on another world, but I can't find it at the moment. (Edit: the one I'm thinking of was about Shardblades..) I'll echo Shawn's statement that you need a source for this. Edit: you replied already. To avoid double-posting: First I've heard talk like this is you right here. Mind pointing me towards other times this has been talked about? We don't actually know that. That WoB became outdated in light of this one. We know that Hoid has access to unkeyed metalminds, so he could probably do some clever things with those.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
The One Who Connects replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
As mentioned, we meet a Sleepless in Edgedancer. The Sleepless are Dysian Aimians, and they are a species of.. hive-mind(ish) individuals composed of Hordelings, (cremling is used on Roshar the way we use "insect" or "bug" on earth). As individuals composed of multiple parts that can be spread around Roshar, it's an interesting thought experiment on what would happen to those far-off parts when the "main body" ascended to Shardhood. I genuinely don't have an answer for you @ethan_sedai. I think they'd just disappear, but it might be that they would all have to be with the main body in order to ascend. (IE: the Sleepless would have to be "whole" in order to ascend.) On the subject of one of your answers Sariel, that makes we wonder.. Would a robot have a spiritweb? -
The short answer would be very little. Due to Era 1 Scadrial being too close to the sun, a majority of the planet is known as "The Burnlands." On account of being near the north pole, the entirety of the Final Empire is surrounded by burnlands. So if it isn't on the map of the Empire, it wasn't traversable.

[OB] Surgebinders unleashed
The One Who Connects replied to LiquidBlue's topic in Stormlight Archive
I should've put "as has been shown to me," in front of my post. Sorry for coming off a little bluntly, but I've been corrected on those WoB's before, so I like making sure everybody's on the same page. It looked like you were using those WoBs as evidence towards them being there, but I see what you really meant now. -
[OB] Surgebinders unleashed
The One Who Connects replied to LiquidBlue's topic in Stormlight Archive
None of those WoB's say what you are thinking they do. The first WoB only says the Shards didn't create the people on Roshar, which does not preclude bringing them from somewhere else. The second does not specify Roshar, so it tells us nothing. The third uses the word "people," which is not specific enough. The word you are looking for is "Splintering." Shattering was Adonalsium, Splintering is what Odium's been doing. -

[OB] Speculations on the title of book four.

As far as I know, we don't know anything more than this WoB says. That said, Brandon would probably follow the existing book's precedent, like you mentioned with the Spreadsheet. -
[OB] Speculations on the title of book four.
The One Who Connects replied to Turnblade Jade's topic in Stormlight Archive
According to Maxal, there's an old WoB where Brandon explicitly said he's alternating Male/Female Focus Characters, meaning Eshonai was always gonna be Book 4. He's got 5 of each, and Book 3 would've followed the pattern even if it were Szeth's book, so I'm inclined to believe him here. As mentioned the first time this was discussed, SoS would have an issue with Shadows of Self. Nothing prevents him from titling it The Song of Secrets like tWoK and watching us suffer with tSoS. That said, I kinda want the title to be from a new song altogether, if only to add more to the worldbuilding of their culture. So to quote myself from last time:
