[OB] An argument for becoming a Stoneward
The One Who Connects replied to Ymawgat's topic in Stormlight Archive
(I'm gonna tag @Aleksiel, since he mentioned some of this too) There's the continuing discourse on the Edgedancer Resonance, and the prevailing theory involves it being related to communication. Lift had this.. connection with street urchin speak in Edgedancer. Were she in the presence of royals(and not mentally a child), I wouldn't be surprised if she picked up on the intricacies of Nobility Speak without much effort. Considering Scholars and Kings wrote the books of old, that inexplicable skill and refined air the Edgedancers used when around them is what was remembered, but not necessarily the whole truth. If you asked the common people of old to describe Edgedancers, I'd bet they'd use the word "understanding," rather than "articulate." The history books, even the history itself, they're all a matter of perspective.- 61 replies

I always looked at it as Squires were Squires to a Radiant, rather than to an Order. Bridge 4 are/were connected to Kaladin, rather than the Windrunners, after all. I personally don't think there is such a thing as a "general squire." Squiring to a Windrunner will make you more likely to be a Windrunner, through association and through them influencing your lifestyle. But if you are a Stoneward at heart, you will start to exemplify that in your actions, and a Stoneward Spren will see that an find you. I agree with Evendale(again) about taking the Squires to Urithiru. An existing KR gives the Spren a beachhead to look around the Physical Realm, and that means the people around that KR are examined as candidates. This applies to family members, so why not squires too? Bridge 4 may as well be Kaladin's "family" during his time in the Warcamps.

I meant it in the sense that... Ignore this. I was using an inaccurate assumption. That's certainly one way to put it. (And will probably become par for the course as time goes on.) Alright. For the time being, tentatively crediting you for the phrase if/when I use it in the future.

We have a WoB that it reduces the effect of things like the Thrill. Not that they are immune to it. It seems like another Investiture resists Investiture situation, but with Connection thrown in to screw with things. As Evendale points out, Kaladin has been connected to Syl for a while, so his experience of the Thrill has mostly been the weakened version. In addition, Kaladin hasn't been a soldier for that long, so he's gonna have less connection with the Thrill than Dalinar, a career Warlord for decades. I also like the idea of opening yourself to it, since it fits with other things we've seen.

hadn't considered it like that(hadn't put much thought in at all yet, to be honest), but I really like this. All sorts of things do a number on your perception on time(like drowsiness, drug highs, solitude, etc..) so a magical one too isn't that unthinkable. Also, I really like "Call of the Revel." Was that in the book, or did you come up with that one on your own? If we use the "influences perception of time," thing your proposed, wouldn't there still have been something to note between their perception and Shallan's? Something akin to the "weeks? it's been days." line that started this thread, except it'd be "hours vs minutes" (Come to think of it, how long were Shallan and Co actually there?)
-
Not necessarily. Radiants don't feel the Thrill(as much). The effects of Revel could be considered as "like the Thrill," since they are both from the Unmade. KR Spren are a mix of H&C Investiture, so they would count as at least somewhat "tied to Honor."

If by "god metal," you are implying Shardblades, then it's not possible. As mentioned in the Warbreaker Annotations, [Spoiler Character] was fully capable of making a lot more. If they were Shardblades, that would mean Nalthis robbed Roshar of a lot of Recreance Blades at some point, which I just don't buy. If you mean they used Endowment's God Metal, I.. actually might have a WoB against that(surprisingly enough):

Dominion, Devotion, and Sel: the Planet Ascends
The One Who Connects replied to Ethan_sedai's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I do remember reading that in the past, but I wasn't exactly sure what was going on at some points. I'm not a fan of using WoBs that I don't fully understand. It looks a bit clearer upon reflection, and I'm somewhat inclined to agree with you. -
Somebody upvoted an old post of mine in the topic you posted that "gaps" thing in, so i reread some of the topic and found your post. I apologize if that was unclear. If that's not what you mean, then please clarify.

[OB] 2 Theories, Renarin and Alethi.

Yea, so that WoB is paraphrased, and the actual entry doesn't say that. I've been corrected on this before, so I'll provide it to you: -

I don't actually have any proof to shoot that down, but I highly doubt that Vo(First Returned) is that old. His wife and crew founded Hanald after his death, they discovered the Tears of Edgli, used them to become a market powerhouse, and that led to the Manywar. The Manywar was only ~600 years from present time in SA. Alethela(and the Alethi) existed in the Silver Kingdoms Era, back when Desolations were a thing, several millennia ago. I just don't feel like a war fought over a resource like that would wait for millennia to happen. Tensions can rise slowly, but that slowly? And if the original Alethi were replaced by Returned descendants at some later point, when would that have happened that wouldn't have been noted? -

I'd like to talk to you about Eshonai and her Stormspren. Said Spren was trapped in a gemstone already, and she still had to enter a Highstorm to bond it. Or do you think Spren trapped in Gemstones are still in the CR? -
Clean Fantasy Suggestions
The One Who Connects replied to MistbornAlpaca's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I've read several of his other series, and they've been pretty good(liking mythology definitely adds to it). For the purpose of the OP, I don't remember any dirty jokes or the like in them, but I cannot guarantee without a full reread. @Master OoklaJack If you are interested in fantasy that's based around old earth mythology, Riordan's books are a good starting point: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: 5 Books, Greek Mythology The Heroes of Olympus: 5 Books, Mixed Greek/Roman Mythology, Sequel Series to Percy Jackson The Kane Chronicles: 3 Books, Egyptian Mythology, Standalone Demigods and Magicians: Short Story Collection, Mixed Egyptian/Greek Mythos, Percy/Kane Crossover(because it's the same Earth, ya know?) Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: 3 Books, Norse Mythology, Standalone The Trials of Apollo: 5 Books(Book 3 coming in May); Mixed Greek/Roman Mythology, Sequel to Heroes of Olympus If you are a fan of stories like those, I'd recommend the Sweet Venom Trilogy by Tera Lynn Childs. It's an interesting twist on the Medusa Myth, and a bit less blatantly "book for kids" than some of Riordan's early stuff was(so it might age a little better as you get older, rather than feeling childish like some books do). I've also expressed some interest in the Seven Wonders series by Peter Lerangis, but as I haven't read it yet, I cannot comment on cleanliness yet. (It was in the Young Adult section of the bookstore, but so is Twilight, among other things) -
Has the identity of the "wandering shard" been determined yet?
The One Who Connects replied to Etruscan's question in Cosmere Q&A
Have the shutdown of Thanatos' "Terror" Theory: Fear appears to be a direct no, trepidation seems too similar to fear, so probably a no. I'd personally say suspicion is out too. Feels too connected to its avoidance actions to be "tangential" in my opinion. -
I'm glad to see you thought this up on your own times, but there was a lengthy discussion on this before. Feel free to check it out and add in your two cents. It's worth a read.

Allomantic Pairings: Elements or Alloys
The One Who Connects replied to The Harp Lady's topic in Mistborn
After the tin+silver debacle, Brandon toyed with Silver replacing Aluminum. Silver was just too common for that to work, since Aluminum was a metal with an "unknown" power at the time. Silver was too common of a metal for nobody to have checked it to see if it(and its alloys) did something, so it would have to be two known powers right off the bat. He already had the original 10 set up quite nicely, and probably the full 16(since this is Brandon). Adding/Changing the base of the system isn't as easy as one would imagine, especially since he would be on attempt 3 to add silver to the system. -
It's a risky yes, but a yes nonetheless. Unless you're talking about specifically the powers you are spiked with, which the forum community has pretty solidly sided against. It doesn't seem like powers themselves are inherited so much as the ability to have powers. Inheriting specific powers would be something noted by the Nobility, would cancel out their entire "keep it secret" mentality, and would make Mistborn an.. interesting case.

Dominion, Devotion, and Sel: the Planet Ascends
The One Who Connects replied to Ethan_sedai's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Have I misread, or are you implying that Elantrians are "self-aware investiture?" Because Elantrians don't die during the Shaod. They are still living people with a physical aspect and everything, just wandering the Cognitive Realm like Khriss/Nazh do. -
Thank somebody for upvoting an old post of mine, it let me rediscover this gem: Ah, the famous "Hoid of the Gaps" argument.
-
Since nobody else has brought it up in this thread, I'll do it. From a prior discussion about this, it was noted that the Fused didn't kill Jezrien out of fear. This person(whom I'd credit if i could find the topic) felt that the Fused were as afraid of the knife as they were of Jezrien. Fused and Heralds are Deathless(reborn-when-killed style immortals, but I like my reference). They go to Damnation when they die, and are released upon the next Desolation. The dagger prevents this from happening to Jezrien, so why shouldn't it prevent it from happening to the Fused too? As for the question of "Why Moash?" we have a thread with that exact title, ya know. I see it as a combination of the Fused being wary of the dagger and what it represents, Moash being expendable if Jezrien pulled some Heraldic trickery and took his killer out with him, and as a loyalty test for Moash for Odium's future plans. I doubt it had anything to do with the Oathpact beyond preventing Jezrien from partaking in it.

[OB] We've seen this spren before
The One Who Connects replied to LordBagel's topic in Stormlight Archive
Ashertmarn is a Mindless Unmade, so he'd be excused from not knowing. I don't know enough about Yelig-Nar or his motivations to comment. Sja-Anat can corrupt Oathgate Fabrial Spren, meaning she can probably see Spren in Gems(I don't remember, do we know if Oathgate Fabrials have a Spren trapped in a Gem too?). Mayhaps her apparent disloyalty? Controlled Humans would be limited by their eyes, so a hidden space would still be hidden from them. I don't know where I stand on any theories at this point, just throwing out ideas -
Considering that Nightblood taking out a Shard isn't a guarantee, I doubt this fancy dagger would be.

[OB] Why Did Dominion and Devotion Pair Up?
The One Who Connects replied to ROSHtaFARian2.0's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The problem with that is that the other name Devotion had was "Love" rather than "Faith/Belief," which implies something a little different. Edit: That was an interpretation that has since fallen into disuse, so it's not as solid of a fan-theory anymore. Even Dominion has been taken differently recently, with more of an emphasis on Sovereignty than Control. Add to that the Passion Debate from OB, and it's a whole jumble of incomplete viewpoints -
They didn't get Squires. It's got to do with the interaction of the powers, not the method of obtaining them. Theoretically, I could get the Stoneward Resonance by becoming a Stoneward, by using Taln's Honorblade, or by granting myself Tension and Cohesion via Hemalurgic Spikes.
