What is their clothing made from?
The One Who Connects replied to Quiver's topic in Stormlight Archive
Here you go -
Fair enough, that does mean quite a bit. My statement is the product of a different discussion that lead to a reread, and the scene went a lot worse than I remembered it going. So her lack of straight up demolishing people sorta.. stuck.

On that subject, arent the lights around the ballroom of Keep Lekal (Venture?) described as "stone heated to the point of brilliance"? While I know Sel and Scadrial are different worlds, basic properties of things like stones shouldn't change.

As has been pointed out to me before, thst fight was basically her getting fairly stomped until she srarted burning e mists, which is almost categorically "divine intervention"

Kalindin and Syl in book 3 possible SPOLIER
The One Who Connects replied to bdoble97's topic in Stormlight Archive
As for her only turning into a blade, dead spren blades are all swords because of the default oattern from Honorblades. Perhaps her default is a sword unless he mentally asks for a spear/knife etc.. So if the scenes where he pulls it are reactionary (ie: out of shock) then that could explain it. Disclaimer: I havent read the chapter, so this is almost baseless conjecture -
Was Pattern the power source of the Davar Soulcaster?
The One Who Connects replied to Proffejor's topic in Stormlight Archive
The trick to forcing objects to soulcast is by bribing it eith stormlight. A strong cognitive presence/identity probably makes it easier, but you still have to pay the item in stormlight. Mraize makes it sound like the Ghostbloods "loaned" Lin Davar one of their Soulcasters. I really dont think they're able to show up there and bind Pattern without him getting away, and have you seen how confusing fabrial science is to a non-practicioner (Lin pre-soulcaster)- 18 replies

Why Scadrian magic users are pretty rusted
The One Who Connects replied to Oversleep's topic in Mistborn
Perhaps he knew that A-genes and F-genes mess with each other and figured they would only inherit one? Slightly more reasonable theory, he could raise them as a Father figure so that they would have qualms abiut betraying him later. Try and talk him out of stuff first, rather than try to outright murder him. i dont really know honestly. You raise a good point that I haven't considered before. -
The Scadrian Year- Astronomers needed
The One Who Connects replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
Thats fair enough all things considered, because its easier than him recalculating the new year length. As for what people "think" a year is, a lot of the time that wouldn't be truly changeable because its based on a cosmic pattern. Thats the line of thinking that started thisnthread to begin eith. Since Investiture resides in the Spiritual Realm, which cares a lot less abput time, I really wonder if the Well was based on local Cognitive years or if Leras picked a predetermined njmber of Yolenese years.. Actually, ifnore that. Thats a conversation for another time I can think of several other things that would screw with the seasons, like the ashmounts or TLR moving the Magnetic North Pole, but thats not the point. I noticed something in the Reddit conversaion that Argent posted: Emphasis added. It sounds like TLR didn't bother to make his own calendar, but that's my interpretation. What do y'all think? -
Why Scadrian magic users are pretty rusted
The One Who Connects replied to Oversleep's topic in Mistborn
Per Kel/Dockson (I believe) Skaa need noble blood in the last 5 generations to be able to have Allomancy. TLR's descendants would be minimum 350 years down from him, and thats if he had kids in the years shortly before his death. Anything earlier would start to go well beyond the inheritable zone. His descendants have the bragging rights of "I'm related to the original King" but not much betond that -

Living up to that title as "Herald of Irony" huh? Leaving the wish/curce for others, just wanted to make a fitting comment -
The Scadrian Year- Astronomers needed
The One Who Connects replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
For the math bit, TLR's Empire lasted "1000 years" but the Well takes 1024. Perhaps that difference is the offset math? Edit: That can't be right actually, it would imply longer years... Hmm On the number of years being unchanged, it fits with how Cognitive perception shapes things. The Well refills after 1024 of whatever a "year" is considered by the people. Hypothetical: Sazed decides to shorten the length of the year in his Books for after the Catacendre, and it sticks. The Well should refill at 1024 AC anyway, even with the reduced timescale. -
People die and go to the Cognitive. Their innate investiture allows them to resist the call of the Beyond for longer. I can't find for sure where Brandon said it (the annotation's maybe?) but the reason that Clod acts differently from other Lifeless has to do with the amount of Breath he held when he died preserving some of his cognitive aspect. This appears to fit eith investiture resisting the Beyond idea. That could account for his surviving the time gap brfore returning. Actually, spoiler just because youre rereading:

The Heralds and Where to Find Them
The One Who Connects replied to Tariniel's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh. I am remembering the wrong 15 word synopsis but the right title. Well done me Brandon may have included it in Roshar so that he keeps with only 10 Major shardworlds, by having this one be nearby. He may have come up with the idea for the story around the time he was rewriting WoK Prime. Honestly, I just figured separate book meant separate series, not directly connected to the Stormlight Archives.- 64 replies

Brandon has said that Kaladin has glimpsed the Cognitive Realm at one point, so it is definitely possible to slightly cross the Realms with large usage of power. I don't know about viewing the Spiritual though.. Using Atium is a glimpse into the Spiritual Realm. (Might be a special case because God Metal) The Metallic Arts also don't make a frost/burn/light, so maybe not the best example anyways.

The Heralds and Where to Find Them
The One Who Connects replied to Tariniel's topic in Stormlight Archive
Its not a confirmation, I was literally stating the Vorin Religion (Brandon often puts hints of truth in local religions sometimes) The fact that it gets twisted was part of how Heaven = Hell due to shattered facts. I was only pointing it out because both places being Braize could fit with Marianmi's question. (Leap of literary faith) I don't see Ashyn fitting in much, mostly because it is/was supposed to have its own story at some point. The Silence Divine I think?- 64 replies

The Heralds and Where to Find Them
The One Who Connects replied to Tariniel's topic in Stormlight Archive
I do not think that has actually been discussed anywhere. Following the Rosharan mythos leads to some fun things though: Heaven = Tranquilline Halls, Damnation = Braize (in world quote) Voidbringers invaded The Halls, kicked man to Roshar Voidbringers followed to push man into Damnation Desolations happened, Voidbringers pushed back to the Halls Heralds followed to take back the Halls (technicality starts here) Technicality: Heralds actually go to Braize Roshar's mythos combined with a few actual facts culminates with the realization that Heaven = Hell If the Heralds are supposed to be from the Halls in the mythos, then perhaps they are from Braize originally. From the Halls, go back to the Halls after Desolations. (They go back to Braize after Desolations, perhaps... See my earlier post: Sept 4th, 2014. I somehow missed that this was in Theories, thought it was in Stormlight Archives sub-forum.

1. Brandon has referred to something called "soul interference" as the reason it is difficult to do. With enough power, you can push/pull anything. You just need to overcome that interference. So yes, but not easy. 2. Most likely. 2.1) I imagine what counts as death in our world is dead. 2.1.1) Blood Flow, Spiritual Connections, maybe a few others.. 2.1.2) That could go either way 3. I imagine so, but don't know for sure. 4. Amputated.. Probably. It'd function like a Shardblade cut limb, so I figure you can push on it. 5. "Soul Interference" is a property of Investiture and of the Spiritual Realm, both of which care little about things like time/place. It isn't specific to Scadrial, so you still need more power to push on metal inside the body. So yes, but not easy.

I personally don't see Lightsong's priests being able to just go to someone of the 8th Heightening to break Lifeless for a couple reasons. How rare people past the 5th Heightening are. A non Returned is gonna have to pay a very hefty fortune over the years to amass that much Breath. Heightening 8. This would make him a fair but shinier than the Returned, and I doubt someone who paid out enough to get there is going to be willingly bound working for the Returned. The Coppermind claims that the only known people to reach the 8th Heightening are Vasher, Shashara and the God Kings. Perhaps it works the same way prevention of aging works. Each Heightening makes it easier, but it plateaus out at the 5th(age) and the 8th(command breaking) It would fit with what we know of other abilities, since even a 1st Heightening person gains better discernment of color, while perfect color recognition is 3rd. Edit: Now that I reread, the Eighth Heightening grants the ability to instinctively break commands of awakened objects.

The Heralds and Where to Find Them
The One Who Connects replied to Tariniel's topic in Stormlight Archive
I have a old note that I made back before WoR came out. Vedel's page on the Coppermind used to have "Herald of Healing" on it. Given her status as Patron of Edgedancers, I imagine it should still hold. (Wading through edit history of Vedel and Heralds isnt fun.. :| Jezrien is also called "Kadasix of Kings" in Azir. Aziri word for Herald perhaps? (Coppermind sources this to Lift's interlude) Remember back to Hoid's story to Kaladin while in prison about The Man Who Raced The Winds? I believe that he mentioned the man raced the Herald Chana and won. Given that her Honorblade should provide Abrasion, perhaps Slicking was a thing she practiced using. At the very least, she had some reputation as a sprinter. (The chapter is called "Fleet" actually) Also, here's an old post of mine: the contents of Theoryland on the origin of the Heralds- 64 replies

Size and scope of my current world building project.
The One Who Connects replied to Tsidqiyah's topic in Creator's Corner
Having a giant lake 800 miles across is a sign that the naval industry needs to be rather well developed to handle it. Consider the world itself, then look at what challenges a nation/people would have in daily life and build the tech level around that. I don't have good experience picking an era and working from there because of how much ends up changing. -
The way I understood the idea is that you are basically bribed into acting a certain way. Do this thing/say these words/live this lifestyle, you get to have powers. If you don't do what the bond wants, you get nothing. Actually, that's basic employer/employee relations... I need to reread the topic again. I see the idea of losing free will in the sense of losing the willingness/capacity to choose. The psychological want/need for Surgebinding powers overwrites the natural mental resistance to being coerced. Your lifestyle choices are restricted to fit within a narrow set of Ideals, and resisting this prevents you from getting your Stormlight Fix. The Recreance occurs even with loss of free wil because people eventually snap under pressure. Insidious or not, the Nahel Bond does force you to adhere to a certain lifestyle. Its a pretty good lifestyle all things considered and the benefits of Surgebinding are rather impressive, but we as humans can eventually tire of anything. We grow curious about what we are not allowed to do (teenagers and their "rebel" phase) Nothing seeks to transcend/escape limits more than a curious mind. Disclaimer: I do not actually think the Nahel Bond is purposefully insidious, but I do see how the argument could be made.

I'm sure its around the forums somewhere, but there was an idea a while back that coined the idea that pre-Heirocracy Ardentia was Truthwatchers/infiltrated by Truthwatchers. Heirocratic claims of visions was connected with the idea that Truthwatchers had visions. Basically, it built upon the fact that the "future sight = voidbringer" idea was created by the Sunmaker, who ended the Heirocracy and drilled that mindset into Vorinism. There's a decently large timegap between the Recreance and the Heirocracy though, so it's probably not how it played out. It was a good idea, since it keeps popping up.

The rigidity could be a result of getting worse, or perhaps the Oaths provide a bit more wiggle room to interpret the law. Actually, he could have a predisposed interpretation of law that makes him seem rigid because he only really seems to aim for one goal. He just uses the law to get what he wants. He does act like a vigilante yes. Perhaps he is used to the authority granted by being the "Herald of Justice" and goes wherever/does whatever he wants to (within legal boundaries of course)
