If Maya revives, will she be the same?
Pathfinder replied to Invocation's topic in Stormlight Archive
Interesting theory! There is a lot we do not know nor understand about the spiritual realm, so that would be a very interesting development. I wish you luck with your theory! Interesting theory! There is still a whole lot we do not know about spren transitioning to the physical so that could be. I wish you luck with your theory! I still like my own theory about Dalinar healing what was torn out with investiture and using Adolin's connection to Maya as scaffolding to guide it with Dalinar's connection powers shoring it all up. Guess at the end of the day we will all have to RAFO, because nothing is concrete nor certain yet. Till Rhythm of War! -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
I am going on recollection so take this with a grain of salt but I believe there was some confusion on that that I am not sure if it was ever clarified/resolved. Brandon has said all investiture that ever was, is and ever will be already exists just it is in different forms. That you cannot destroy investiture, it just takes a different form in the system. However he also said the black smoke leaking out of night blood is corrupted investiture. I believe it cannot be used and cannot be returned to endowment. Now having said that regarding nightblood, what I was meaning with yelig nar is if he works like I think he does and if he fed on odium through a direct conduit of a fused, I think odium would get worried about yelig nar getting too powerful and ascending. The reason I think this is So I think by extension the same would apply to yelig nar eating odiums power. But that is just conjecture on my part based on tidbits of info here and there. -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
From what I recall of WoB, the fused do not have unlimited investiture. They hold it perfectly so it lasts far longer than it would for a human. Odium does fuel them with voidlight. Now if it was a direct conduit (I do not think it is, but I do not think we know one way or the other for sure), then I do not think Odium would like Yelig-nar feeding on him through the fused. Just like shards try to avoid nightblood for the same reason. At least that is my rationale. -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
No worries. Happens to me plenty of times too. Its why I love my kindle. Makes word searches a snap. Just little nitpick. Aesudean claims to be herself as well. In the quote I posted prior in this thread, Kaladin acts as if he is speaking to Yelig-nar. She laughs and says she is the one in control, and he is speaking to her. edit: I know double posting is frowned upon, but I do not know how to edit an existing post, to then quote a new post. it ends up opening a new window with the new quote. -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
If you are thinking of the quote I think you are it is below: Oathbringer page 1130 "If you wish for the promised power, ingest that - then try to control the one who follows. But be warned, the queen at Knolinar tried this, and the power consumed her." So no mention of whether she was a good or bad vessel. I think this supports my theory to a degree. The longer you wield nightblood, the more and faster he seems to consume till you become overwhelmed. Same could be for Yelig-nar with using his powers. The more you use, the faster he consumes, till you are overwhelmed and no more. To the best of my recollection, Brandon confirmed that killing the fused with nightblood killed them for good. The fused are cognitive shadows and are made up of investiture. I do not believe that is regarding the spiritual realm. In additional the spiritual realm is where the power of the shards resides, theoretically not where a person "goes after they die". That is left deliberately ambiguous on Brandon's part. -
I have the quotes in mind (page 1, page 76, page 264, page 345, and page 347), but it will take me time to type them up. The implication the book gives is that Elantris was a "city of the gods" where anyone could come and receive healing, or wisdom of the Elantrians. They needed nor wanted for anything, so each Elantrian could pursue whatever activity gave them meaning. Galladon's father was a scholar who enjoyed research. People were not charged for healing. When Raodan takes over, as he is king and an elantrian as well, he changes the nobility into for all intents and purposes food distributors. As mentioned, some aons do require great training, healing being the big one. Elantrians can even mess up with healing and do more harm than good. If then it still needs to be spiced, and flavored, as well as training is required because if done incorrectly, the food is poisonous. This I would need to check, but don't even crafted aons only activate for an Elantrian and no one else? So selling plates of them would only accomplish in you having a plate with an aon on it.

What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
My theory is using nightblood as a basic template. So I believe Yelig-nar could feed off of stormlight, voidlight, breaths, or any other form of kinetic investiture first. If there isn't any available, then it consumes the person. Basically I view using Yelig-nar's powers as equivalent to drawing nightblood. When you stop using Yelig-nar's powers, it is like sheathing nightblood. You still hold the blade, but since you are not actively using it, it is not actively draining. So too I theorize occurs with Yelig-nar. -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
If my theory is correct, then the powers would have to be actively used in order for Yelig-nar to consume. So for me just shoving the gemstone down the throat would accomplish nothing so long as the Herald chose not to use the powers. My theory posits it has nothing to do with being worthy or not, or even being a better vessel or not. I posit that as long as you have fuel to feed Yelig-nar while using his power, you should theoretically be safe, but like nightblood, you definitely have to watch your levels. But it is still very much a theory so I could be completely and totally wrong. -
The economics of Aviars and conclusions drawn from that
Pathfinder replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Already asked an answered in my above post. Aviar are not only attractive to the mainland for their talents. They are also "pretty" birds and status symbols. Secondly, and I will have to repeat this again below because you mention this again, but Kokerlii is especially mind hiding strong enough that not only does Sixth mention it internally, but he is grateful for it. That says to me that Kokerlii's breed would be valuable for trappers so they have that little bit extra safety that could spell the difference between survival and death. The birds can be valuable but at the same time, have different reasons for their value. What you posit does not have to be mutually exclusive You assume that: 1. the market value has to be huge when all we have is a comment that the mating plumes would lead a trapper to search for a nest. Which is not confirmation that they would be searching for Kokerlii's breed in particular, nor for that specific power. Just that the idea of gaining eggs in the wild is appealing to a trapper. 2. that this theorized huge market value would diminish, which isn't an issue if that was not the sole goal of the breed to begin with. No it is not. People can get imitation crab, yet there is a market for actual crab. People can get generic products yet there is still a product for the actual product. People could have a mainland Aviar, but the truly rich with the means, can get a Aviar from the islands. It is a status symbol, regardless the power. In fact the power could be utterly useless, but so long as it is rare, it would appeal even further. People do that with pokemon lol. They could have 30 pikachus, but they will kill themselves to get that one shiny pikachu because it is unique. In a world where one misstep can spell your death, I would say it would be invaluable to the trapper. You disagree. To each their own. Could it be that Sixth realized why the birds get their talents, and brought in a mainland to see if he was right? Pretty easy answer. Don't need something to test abilities. Simply bond a bird from the islands. You now know what power it bestows. You then decide to breed it on the mainland to sell it without the island. Someone bonds the offspring. The power they expected to work, does not. There you go. Tested and answered. -
If Nazh is any indication (and he is because he is from Threnody), then there are ways to seal away shades and use them as weapons. If there is a way to store them into a hand held device, then there should certainly be ways to contain or control them in other ways. That is of the time line of the Wax and Wayne series.

What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oathbringer page 813 “Oh, Elhokar,” the queen was saying. “You were ever so oblivious. Your father had grand plans, but you … all you ever wanted to do was sit in his shadow. It was for the best that you went off to play war.” “So you could stay here and … and do this?” Elhokar said, waving toward the palace. “I continued your father’s work! I found the secret, Elhokar. Spren, ancient spren. You can bond with them!” “Bond…” Elhokar’s mouth worked, as if he couldn’t understand the very word he spoke. “Have you seen my Radiants?” Aesudan asked. She grinned. “The Queen’s Guard? I’ve done what your father could not. Oh, he found one of the ancient spren, but he could never discover how to bond it. But I, I have solved the riddle.” In the dim light of the royal chambers, Aesudan’s eyes glittered. Then started to glow a deep red. “Storms!” Elhokar said, stepping back. Time to go. Kaladin reached down to try to pick up the child, but the boy screamed and scrambled away from him. That, finally, drew the king’s attention. Elhokar rushed over, throwing aside the dressing screen. He gasped, then knelt beside his son. The child, Gavinor, scooted away from his father, crying. Kaladin looked back to the queen. “How long have you been planning this?” “Planning for my husband’s return?” “I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the thing beyond you.” She laughed. “Yelig-nar serves me. Or do you speak of the Heart of the Revel? Ashertmarn has no will; he is merely a force of consumption, mindless, to be harnessed.” Elhokar whispered something to his son. Kaladin couldn’t hear the words, but the child stopped weeping. He looked up, blinked away tears, and finally let his father pick him up. Elhokar cradled the child, who in turn clutched his stuffed soldier. It wore blue armor. “Out,” Kaladin said. “But…” The king looked toward his wife. “Elhokar,” Kaladin said, gripping the king’s shoulder. “Be a hero to the one you can save.” The king met his eyes, then nodded, clutching the young child. He started toward the door, and Kaladin followed, keeping his eyes on the queen. She sighed loudly, stepping after them. “I feared this.” They rejoined their soldiers, then began to retreat down the hallway. Aesudan stopped in the doorway to the king’s chambers. “I have outgrown you, Elhokar. I have taken the gemstone into me, and have harnessed Yelig-nar’s power.” Something started to twist around her, a black smoke, blown as if from an unseen wind. Here aesudan mentions about bonding the unmade and making her "own radiants". The guards were that way for a while. At least since kaladin and co entered the city and the implication is it's been before that. So I took that scene to mean she bonded yelig nar awhile ago and turned the guards to her will. After that she had no need to use the power for awhile. When kaladin and co showed up at the palace, she summoned the abilities in full to fight the soldiers kaladin and co brought in full. By tapping the full powers, she got consumed. At least that is my theory -
What happens if Yelig-nar possesses a herald?
Pathfinder replied to bxcnch's topic in Stormlight Archive
I posted my theory awhile back. Basically some of what Aesudean said leads me to believe she had swallowed and bonded Yelig-nar potentially weeks or more before Kaladin and Co showed up. So potentially she held Yelig-nar faaaaaaaar longer than Amaram. I do not think that is because she is a "better" vessel. I think it is because up until Kaladin and Co, she did not actively use the powers bestowed by Yelig-nar. She had no reason to. She had two other Unmade to take over the city. When Kaladin and Elhokar flee the palace, Aesudean pursues them. Her eyes glow red, but she also begins to summon the black smoke, which marked Amaram's beginning transformation and power usage. A lot of this is loose theorizing/conjecture based on little tidbits of information, but its what I am sticking to for now lol Yeah, I think nightblood feeds off of kinetic investiture/fuel first, then on the person themselves. I personally am among those that think shardplate is made of lesser spren and any differences inherent between plate and blade is due to the lesser degree of sapience, but there are theories that disagree. At this point we just do not know. I think the shardplate being damaged and not eaten supports my theory because it is focusing on eating Amaram. But again, it is a very loose theory till we get more evidence. -
The economics of Aviars and conclusions drawn from that
Pathfinder replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He fished in his pocket, fingers brushing an old stiff piece of feather. Then, not wanting to pass up the opportunity, he got a few long, bright green and red feathers from his pack. They were mating plumes, which he’d taken from Kokerlii during the Aviar’s most recent molting. He moved into the jungle, meekers following with excitement. Once he neared their den, he stuck the mating plumes into some branches, as if they had fallen there naturally. A passing trapper might see the plumes and assume that Aviar had a nest nearby, fresh with eggs for the plunder. That would draw them. This is the scene you are referring to. No mention of kokerlii being especially valuable to the mainland. Just that mating plumes would make a trapper look for a nest with eggs to plunder. However there is more later. “I want to make it perfectly clear,” the woman said. “I have no intention of stealing your birds or infringing upon your territory.” Rivals steal each others birds and are very territorial. You assume it has to deal with getting money from the mainland. These are ancient traditions that she sees as barbaric. They existed prior to the birds becoming popular Dusk settled back. The woman rotated slowly in her net, and he noticed an Aviar clinging to the outside—like his own birds, it was about as tall as three fists atop one another, though this one had subdued white and green plumage. A streamer, which was a breed that did not live on Patji. He did not know much about them, other than that like Kokerlii, they protected the mind from predators. Kokerlii is not the only breed that hides minds. There is a reason I mention this in particular. Will go into further down below. Yes, one wing was bloody. Vathi knew enough to care for the bird, however, which was pleasing. Some homeislers were completely ignorant of their Aviar’s needs, treating them like accessories rather than intelligent creatures. Aviar are not desired just for their talents. They are also desired for the appearance. So again, it is an assumption that mind blocking is especially prized on the mainland when there is one off hand reference about kokerlii plumage. However there is a reason why a trapper could be interested in kokerlii in particular. This is shown further down Dusk stopped, turning. The woman’s own Aviar moved down her dress away from Kokerlii to cling near her bodice. The bird hissed softly, but Kokerlii—oblivious, as usual—continued to chirp happily. It was fortunate his breed was so mind-invisible, even deathants would consider him no more edible than a piece of bark. “Is this…” Vathi said, looking to Dusk. “Yours? But of course. The one on your shoulder is not Aviar.” Sak settled back, puffing up her feathers. No, her species was not Aviar. Dusk continued to lead the way. “I have never seen a trapper carry a bird who was not from the islands,” Vathi said from behind. Kokerlii is so mind invisible that even deathants cant see him. This shows that although some breeds have similar powers, the potency of said powers can vary between breeds or even potentially between individuals. So breeding the kokerlii to produce the strongest mind hiding talent would be invaluable to a trapper whose very life depends on it. Kokerlii landed on top of one of the homes, trilling—but softly, now that night had fallen. More coos and chirps came from the other boxes. Dusk climbed out to check each bird for hurt wings or feet. These Aviar pairs were his life’s work; the chicks each one hatched became his primary stock-in-trade. Yes, he would trap on the island, trying to find nests and wild chicks—but that was never as efficient as raising nests. We could assume based on this reception to kokerlii that the other aviar in this nest are the same breed and sixth is breeding them. However this is untrue for two reasons. One, sixth has remarked multiple times on how aviar raised by trappers act different and see humans as part of their roost. So too would the other breeds they grew up with. The second reason is shown below in the quote where the machine is activated and all the aviar freak out. hurt that wing more, with the fracture. She’d eventually be able to bite off the bandage, but for now, she’d get a chance to heal. Once done, he placed her with his other Aviar, who made quiet, friendly chirps, calming the flustered bird. See? We know her breed is different than kokerlii, from a different region, yet they welcome it. He sighed and rose, placing Sak on his shoulder. He turned, and almost stumbled as he saw his corpse at his feet. He came alert immediately. What was it? Vines in the tree branches? A spider, dropping quietly from above? There wasn’t supposed to be anything in his safecamp that could kill him. Sak screeched as if in pain. Nearby, his other Aviar cried out as well, a cacophony of squawks, screeches, chirps. No, it wasn’t just them! All around … echoing in the distance, from both near and far, wild Aviar squawked. They rustled in their branches, a sound like a powerful wind blowing through the trees. Sak is the one on his shoulder reacting. Either every single one of them is like sak, which cant be the case because the woman does not comment on them the way she does sak, or there is a mixture and they all can be affected by the machine. I personally lean towards the latter. So for myself these quotes show that trappers do value the mind hiding aviar enough to breed them. To me we have no indication that mind hiding aviar are bred in massive numbers for the main land other than potentially that their appearance is appealing. Not knowing what other talents are bestowed by aviar (as sak is unique), I feel we cannot judge at this point what talents are especially valuable to the main land. It is beneficial for trappers to breed the mind hiding aviar because You never know when your current one could get hurt, die, or fly away (mentioned in the beginning as to why they tend to clip the wings but sixth doesn't) Different breeds have different strengths of mind hiding abilities. So the chance of finding a breed that is even stronger and protects you even better is even more valuable to a trapper that depends on it for his or her life We dont know how old aviar get. Breeding them may ensure you always have one ready for the future if your current gets too old to survive the dangerous island conditions with you. Curiosity about the islands have a surge due to wanting to know the origin of the talents. You need a mind hiding one to explore, so everyone gets one to explore. Edit: can you explain your last point. It makes no sense to me. -
The economics of Aviars and conclusions drawn from that
Pathfinder replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The masking ability isnt the only ability that the aviar provide. Other breeds give other abilities. You are making an assumption that the mind shielding ones are prized to possess while on the mainland. We saw the mind shielding ones so much because they are a necessity on the islands. They want to know about the islands because only birds from the islands can grant gifts, but they never say certain gifts are prized over others or why. They want to know why only breeds from the islands bestow gifts, not birds from the mainland. the birds are also a status symbol of the rich as mentioned. Quotes shown below Nobody knew why beasts like the shadows only lived here, in the waters near the Pantheon. Why not travel across the seas to the Eelakin Islands or the mainland, where food would be plentiful and Aviar like Kokerlii were far more rare? Once, these questions had not been asked. The seas were what they were. Now, however, men poked and prodded into everything. They asked, “Why?” They said, “We should explain it.” “The world is changing, Sixth of the Dusk,” she said softly. “The people of the mainland grow hungry for Aviar companions; things once restricted to the very wealthy are within the reach of ordinary people. We’ve learned so much, yet the Aviar are still an enigma. Why don’t chicks raised on the homeisles bestow talents? Why—” “We set up camp on the far beach,” she said. “We have two ironhulls armed with cannons watching the waters. Those can take on even a deepwalker, if they have to. Two hundred soldiers, half that number in scientists and merchants. We’re determined to find out, once and for all, why the Aviar must be born on one of the Pantheon Islands to be able to bestow talents. “But why would they?” she continued, quietly, as if to herself. “The Aviar are special. Everyone knows the separate breeds and what they do. Why assume that a fish would learn to breathe air, if raised on land? Why assume a non-Aviar would become one if raised on Patji.…” -
No worries. It happens.

Please re-read the quote again. I had bolded it for ease, but now I will now highlight it on top of that. He asked if Cemci would consider the heralds members. Cemci said they wouldn't. Brandon then says but he would: Brandon Sanderson No, not yet, I don't think. But it depends if you count the Heralds as members of their order. Cemci I don't. Brandon Sanderson Oh, see I would, because they're kind of heads of their Order. If you don't count them you have not met some from every Order

That happened to me with Scarlet. In Birthright i was more focused on other units. When I got to revelation, and had a perfect crit/vantage/astra build in mind for her, she was taken away far too soon lol. Btw it looks like another one of the leaks got confirmed. warning it is a spoiler for after the time skip It is:

Just going to raise one point and then leave it as we have gone on at length on the other thread. When Silence is ambushed by Red to steal her bounty, she remarks that Red had a cudgel and one of the women had a crossbow with blunted tips. "Silence studied Red's eyes., He was armed with a cudgel, and one of the women behind him had one of those new crossbows with the blunt tips. They cranked fast, and hit hard, but didn't draw blood." So knocking out, breaking bones all viable. To me that says there are ways to apprehend without spilling blood. But as with the other thread, to each their own. Guess RAFO

Lol, there is one thing I listed in my spoiler tag that I think I can post out for anyone to see that I really hope is true. At least one beast class! I really enjoyed the fox and wolf classes in Fates, so I hope they make a come back. I was afraid because I hadn't seen any among the class mates, that they nixed it. What would be really cool to me is if each house recruited one that coincides to their house's emblem. So a lion for the blue lions, a bird unit for the black eagles, and a deer for the golden deers. As to the one that you hope is false:
-
My only nitpick, is Brandon would consider the Heralds members of their respective orders. WoB below: Cemci Have we-- I think you mentioned in a previous signing that we'd already met one member of every Order of the Knights Radiant. Brandon Sanderson Yes, I think you have. Cemci My question is, have we met two Edgedancers? And is one of the Dustbringers a viewpoint character? Brandon Sanderson One of the Dustbringers is eventually a point-of-view character. Cemci Haven't been yet? Brandon Sanderson No, not yet, I don't think. But it depends if you count the Heralds as members of their order. Cemci I don't. Brandon Sanderson Oh, see I would, because they're kind of heads of their Order. If you don't count them you have not met some from every Order. Cemci Have we met someone from the Dustbringers? Brandon Sanderson Well-- Dustbringers are really complicated. Really complicated. So that's the weird one. Okay? So let's shelve that one. You'll see why it's really weird later on.

Wyrn could say that clouds are pink fluffy elephants lol. For the purpose of this book, in this case, Wyrn called for the death of a nation of people, of which a good chunk are very innocent. Wyrn is the voice of their god, thus their religion is calling for the death of those people. You can personally view that as fine, that is your prerogative, but others would very much disagree and by extension term that religion as evil.
-
There are a whoooooooole lot of people on this forum that would adamantly disagree with you on that. They have said that murder is murder period and is evil regardless the rationale. For myself I see the application in certain scenarios. Regardless it does not change that as per the doctrine, their god called for the death of a whole nation (Teod) and a whole city. As per the religion, every action Wyrn and by extension Dilaf took is their God made manifest.
-
So I read through all the Thanibomb leaks (the ones that little by little have been getting confirmed). All told I hope they are right because it is for the most part everything I am hoping for. For a few of the details in particular I have spoiled them below
