Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions

I really don’t like Jasnah. I think she’s an arrogant, conceited jerk (think Aes Sedai) who needs to be taken down a couple of notches, and I really hope it’s done by Shallan.

I like all of sanderson's characters but someone needs to teach Jasnah a lesson. Badly.

I wonder if Sanderson was thinking of Aes Sedai when building her character..

I did like Jasnah, but after her ‘return’ I found that as Shallan had moved on from her, so had I.

Unpopular opinion? 

I'd like Kaladin a whole lot more if Brandon Sanderson hadn't given him a mental illness. I suspect he did it because it makes Kal seem more "human" or to make him a more "realistic" character but honestly for me all it does is the opposite. I cannot relate no matter how hard I try and I hate it when he suddenly acts so illogically (considering how intelligent he is).

Sigh.. so, I said it. I know, I should be more compassionate and understanding but it annoys the hell out of me. Sorry. 

 

/edit: This "intense" Jasnah dislike in this thread surprises me. But luckily Mr. Sanderson has fleshed out so many different characters, everyone can find their own one to dislike

Mainly I think, it's because every character is actually barrable, Shinri is way better than Shallan.

I get what you're saying about Kal and I totally understand, but honestly what makes him so relatable to me is that he has the same thoughts, reactions, and feelings that I've had in the past. While I get exactly what you're saying, and I feel annoyed by him sometimes as well, it is really nice sometimes to read something he thinks/feels, stop and look back to make sure I'm not imagining things, and have a little mental breakdown/celebration moment where I'm super glad that I'm not alone. I don't want to sound like I'm trying to really get onto you or anything but I relate to Kal because of his depression, and I really appreciate that Brandon Sanderson wrote a character I can really relate to in a lot of ways. (He does strike me as whiny sometimes, but I think if someone read my internal monologue, I would sound pretty whiny too haha!)

Boots jokes are stupid, Shallan should not take boots from Kal, and SHOULD NOT treat it as if it is only a harmless joke later on. And Kal shouldn't send Shallan boots as her wedding gift.

I don't get why people think sticks are a joke, it's not funny, at all.

Well, to be fair Kaladin accused Shallan of being an arrogant lighteyes like all the others and brought up the shoes as an example. So he made very clear that it wasn't a harmless joke and she understood it. 

And now that they have talked about it, it's fine (from my point of view) when he jokes about it. If they hadn't talked about it, it would have been a different story.

Because she is one. I know she probably apologized and gave it back to Kaladin, off screen, but I still don't know why she had to make fun of boots. It's like saying "I stole your things before now I'm making it a joke and it's vary funny."

I sorta really doubt that Kaladin ever got his boots back. It just seems unlikely to me, or like something that would have been mentioned on screen if it did happen off screen.

I'm not sure that being annoyed by/disliking Jasnah is an unpopular opinion anymore. While I do think that Jasnah acted pretty arrogant and unlikeable in OB, I think that we are all judging her a little too early (Both for people who like and dislike her). We know basically nothing about her, and it seems pretty clear to me that there is a lot more to know.

Oooh, that IS unpopular!

But the good news is that Alcatraz 6 is probably not very far off now.   It was "basically all complete" at the end of last year, so hopefully we'll get it next year!

Honestly, I kind of agree with that. The last Alcatraz book we got was in 2016 and Starsight was released last year. I like Skyward, but I think I want a clear ending to Alcatraz first because it's been so long since The Dark Talent. Of course, I'd probably want the sequel to Rithmatist before both of those, but I know that's not going to be for a while.

Yeah, that kerfuffle with Apocalypse Guard really messed things up. Hopefully we're back on track before he starts working on Stormlight 5

Agreed. The kind of reaction he has gotten shows that. However, he is decidedly unlikeable, but that doesn´t make him a bad caharcter. In fact, I think he is similar to Jasnah in the regard. Both are (in my opinion) unlikeable, but also very well-written.

That's more or less how I feel about all of Sanderson's non-Stormlight books. I love Stormlight, but it just takes up so much of Sanderson's schedule, and honestly I'd rather have the man spend more time on other projects. THAT BEING SAID, I also really want to read a Stormlight book that's over 500k words someday.
