So I have this little Serenity keychain (pewter, pretty accurate, I love it), and the other day the rear stabilizer part fell off, the struts under the main engine.  I was annoyed and sad, though it's several years old and I knew it wasn't a matter of bad production quality probably.  I also still had the part, so I can glue it back on.

Then today it hit me just how fitting it was to have pieces falling off of Serenity.

 I'm still sorting through the 300+ photos I took last Monday on my birdwatching trip, but here are a few more--Barn Swallows nesting at the Antelope Island visitor center. =)

This nest was getting a little crowded with almost-fledged babies.

The ones in this nest were younger, but still old enough that their eyes were open and they had some feathers.

This little guy was alone in his nest; I'm assuming his siblings fledged already.

Same little guy, scratching an itch!

A much younger group of nestlings--no feathers on their throats yet.

I got my first Duolingo bonus skill: idioms and proverbs.

The Italian phrase for "April fools" is "pesce d'aprile." Guys, this literally means, "April's fish."

I don't know. Duolingo doesn't give a whole lot of context. I'm sure it's something embedded into the culture that makes perfect sense to native Italian speakers. Which...hey. Hang on a sec. We actually have one of those lurking around the Shard!

About the deep meaning, I honestly don't know it. I tried to make some research to answer you but it seems the Connection's origin is quite lost in time.

I always believed it's a metaphor. Like the Fisherman prepares a bait and waits for his victim (the fish) to arrive and fails to recognize the trick....In the same way the prank is set to fool the poor guy. Probably every other trap related metaphor would be good too...But the fish's one is the less cruel in the average mindset and therefore more acceptable in a social context.

 

Of course this is just how I see the April's fish's Origins, I can't be sure.

Thank you, that does make some sense. It's a lot less weird than some of the idioms English likes to throw around.

As of this morning, Duolingo says that I am 5% fluent in Italian. Great. I can ask the bowl full of beef where to find the bathrooms. That's useful!

Well some idioms starts for very weird reasons, I suppose this is true for all the languages.

To be honest, there are at least other two Italians here on the Shard, but I have to keep their identities secret...This is a burden for me alone
