I would love to pull that, but it wouldn't work at my church because it's a congregation specifically for young singles. I'd have to do it to a stranger who doesn't know that I have no husband or boyfriend. Just the idea sure cheered me up, though.

Ooh but that makes it even more scandalous and hilarious! .....or obvious and unfunny. Hmph.

Anyway I realize this isnt random stuff and I probably shouldnt derail the thread too much, but Twis and Delightfuls jokes made me remember somethings: I am a stick, pun intended, Ive had strangers joke about that ("You are so skinny this wind could blow you away"). I dont mind, I just laugh, but it did my me wonder why that was ok, but the opposite isnt ("Good thing you've got some meat on your bones so the wind doesnt blow you away") I dont know where I am going with this It is early and I need to go to work now.

Mestiv he/him Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 (edited) Today we have an anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. That is not something that would normally make my day bad, because up to this year, the commemorations were always something that brought people together and were a beautiful display that we remember about those that died fighting for our freedom. This year however, the ruling party Law and Justice is poisoning another important part of our culture/memory/identity. Every year, there was an appeal read with the assist of army, honoring the soldiers and civilians that died in 1944. With each year, fewer and fewer surviving soldiers could make it, but they always had their representation at the ceremony. This year however, our minister of defense, Antoni Macierewicz, made a decision, that every ceremony that has assistance of our army, has to have an appeal about the catastrophe in Smoleńsk. The L&J party is trying to make a national hero of Lech Kaczyński, our president that died in the plane crush at Smoleńsk and they have no shame while trying to do so... After an uproar in the media, Macierewicz met with some of the the uprising survivors and forced them to agree to have Lech Kaczyński mentioned as the biggest contributor to the memory of the uprising. It is just sickening what they're trying to do. Mentioning a politician that died in a plane crash among people that gave their life to free the city from occupation... There is another sick thing that they're doing with the Smoleńsk appeal. In Polish we have a word "poległ" which can be translated as "died in battle". They are using this word to describe what happened to people that died in that plane crash. They apparently "died in battle" while their plane crashed... That's just insulting for every man and woman that died in any war. Anyway, here's a short, beautiful video, showing how we commemorate the uprising in Warsaw. At 17:00 when the sirens start the whole city stops for a minute. This video puts tears in my eyes every time I see it. Spoiler EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention. The L&J party, is trying to take one of the uprising soldiers general Ścibor-Rylski to court, because he cooperated with Communist agents some short time after WW2. The man is 99 years old, got decorated 2 times with Virtuti Militari Order (the highest polish military decoration) and it is just totally vile and wicked to dig out such things now, just because he is criticizing the ruling party He has already stood before court for his mistakes before and it should be over, but the L&J party has no honor and will stop at nothing to attack those who criticize them EDIT2: Google is hosting a site with photos from the uprising: https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/u/0/exhibit/AQCTpPsp?utm_campaign=warsawrising&utm_source=google&utm_medium=stella Edited August 1, 2016 by Mestiv 2

I...I have no words for how awful that is. So why are they appealing to have the president honored like the soldiers who died in 1944? I get the sense that it'll advance their agenda, but being relatively ignorant of Polish history and politics, I'm not sure how or if that sense is correct.

They just want to speak about Lech Kaczyński on every occasion they have. The bigger the audience the better. They praise his bravery, brilliance and whatever else they can think off, assigning all kinds of great deeds to him. They're making use of the saying: "A lie told often enough becomes the truth.". They try to make a hero of Lech Kaczyński, so that Jarosław Kaczyński (leader of L&J) feels better (they were twins). Many people in Poland believe that the catastrophe in Smoleńsk was actually Russians fault. That it was a terrorist attack/assassination made by them. Making a martyr out of the dead president (he was from L&J) gives them more prestige and plays well with russophobic moods of many poles, so they use his name and memory in their political games when they see it fit. Soon they will probably put him on the same shelf as Piłsudski, Poniatowski or Jan III Sobieski :/

Sorry they're doing that to your national history, Mestiv—revisionist history is dangerous. What's the general attitude toward what they're doing? Do they have a lot of supporters, or are many Poles crying foul?
Mestiv he/him Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Unfortunately they're still the most supported party at the moment (25%, the next one has only 15%). Mainly thanks to their 500+ programme (~130 USD for every second and next child every month). They're buying support using money taken from next generations The national debt is growing faster than ever before since 1989. I have a feeling that majority of poles don't like what they're doing with history, but that's based only on my social circles. I have no idea how it's viewed by those who voted for them.

As I interact with people of various political views, I can say that there are those who support them, those who don't like them, those who don't care, those who try to make their own political agenda based on demonizing them and those who genuinely believe L&J is evil incarnate. Strangely enough, I never saw any of their supporters or people having similar views comment on revisioning history. What a coincidence, right? Anyway, we have no good option as far as poilitical parties go. That seems to be an universal constant across the world.
Briar King Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 The innocence of today's kids is being lost so much faster in our tech age. My 9 yr old son asked me after losing a tooth if the Fairy was really real and I'm like yes Jace. My 12 yr old girl has known the truth for about 2 yrs now thanks to Internet but helps me play along for him. So I gave him $5 and said she musta heard him asking me and wanted to prove she was real lol. I feel sorry for them knowing they ll have to grow up faster then the Gens before them and lose that magic sooner

I remember being 7ish and knowing it was my parents but still sort of lying to myself and pretending she's real.
Mestiv he/him Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 My parents never tried to make me believe in tooth fairy... but that's not really surprising as it's not common in Poland. I remember that I was < 9 when I figured out that the Santa Claus is a fairy tale told to kids. It didn't make me sad at all, because the presents were still there 3

In exchange for some spare change, I was willing to believe in anything!
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 My parents specifically made sure that my brother and I wouldn't grow up believing in Santa. For as long as I can remember, I knew my parents bought the presents, wrapped them, and put them out under the tree each year. Same goes for the Tooth Fairy; when I lost a tooth, I'd take it right to my mom, who'd pay me for it. My sister, on the other hand, believed in Santa until she was seven or so. I don't know why she was different; maybe my parents just wanted an easy way to remind her to behave, or maybe it's because she's the youngest. No idea. Anyway, my mom would even have one of her brothers call my sister on the phone around Christmas and pretend to be Santa. She figured it out on her own after a few years.
Mestiv he/him Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Now I feel sad that I didn't sell my teeth to my parents :< Such a fortune lost... so many teeth simply thrown away... 1

We've decided as parents to treat Santa like Mickey Mouse. We talk about him, we enjoy the stories, even pretend to have presents from him maybe, but we'll never let our kids think he actually exists; he's a fictional character that's lots of fun. Same with the tooth fairy and similar ideas. jW
Delightful Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 (edited) (The question is to why we get paid for teeth falling out in the first place?) My parents are once again confusing autonomy with "selfish bad attitude". Thankfully they havent thrown the words at me this time but I did get "oh so you just want our money then do you?". And it's strange that my self confidence is down when I can't do anything by myself for myself without Parent Control hijacking the whole operation or insulting me when I resist? Aaaaagggggghhhhh Yeah I know theyre just trying to help but theyre doing it all wrong. Edit: So Mum just came in to measure my current screen and thankfully wasnt weird about me closing this window because awks. me: Can I please do the research?
