I'm actually really mad with my library, they consistently have the second books in series, and usually don't have the first.

Therefore, my kindle is my new best friend when it comes to reading, especially since there is an Iphone app for it.

Right now, I'm reading Silverthorn and The Blinding Knife. They are both shaping up to be interesting.

Silverthorn from the riftwar saga book 3? If so, book 4 is amazing.

Malazan! Now that's what I like to hear. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

You know, BK, you are like a Malazan evangelist or something.

The Blinding Knife is probably best because of The Broken Eye's release in a week. Then The Crimson Campaign (and the Powder Mage short stories, if you haven't read them), because it will be a while before a new book comes out in that series. And then Jordan.

Hhaha, unfortunately that reasoning doesn't really work for me as in my country it won't arive for another few months minimum and if I order it it'll end up costing US$45 or more, and I just don't have that kind of money, the US$32 I spent on WoR was already streaching it... :/ so I guess I'm just going to have to wait to find out what happens to Gavin and Kip!

I just started Brent Week's Black Prism (just in time too...) I should be finishing book two about when my library gets a copy of book three. It's pretty good so far, but the magic system is definitely weird, but the weirdest part by far is the fact that without knowing anything about it, I was making something fairly similar for my book. Hmm... I'll have to fix that now...

The Blinding Knife is amazing, okay. Just... I'm still in shock and I finished three days ago.

That's a bummer =\ I've got a few friends around the world in situations similar to yours, and it just pains me to see people not be able to get books as quickly and easily (in terms of both convenience and finances) as I can in the US. An ebook (that you can read on your computer if you don't have a mobile device capable of processing those) should be cheaper, but I still feel your pain...

Yeah, it sucks... I am considering going the ebook route as they're often as much as half price but an ebook just isn't the same...

I buy ebooks if the book is expensive or relatively short and not an author I really like.

I live in Canada, which means I overpay for my books...  Really the book market is one were we get seriously screwed over here. Just to give you an idea, a book which sells for 7$ US would sell over here for 20$ CAN: same book, same language, same everything. Canadian dollar is worth nearly as much as the American dollar

But I get my books in time and the shipping is usually nearly free as I get them shipped from Ontario or something. Amazon's got a shipping depot over there: it gets here in one or two days :)

My library is really great. We now have a resort of libraries all across town. You reserved your book on the Internet and it gets delivered to your home library. You get an automated message or an email when it gets there and you have 48h to pick it up. All in all, I have access to 19 libraries. On the downside, the system is really appreciated, so it gets overloaded. It usually takes a few days for my book to get here, so I have to planned in advance and put on reservations before I am done with my previous book.

They usually get everything both in French and in English.

I'm reading Ruins by Dan Wells right now.  Unfortunately, none of the characters in this series have really gotten my attention (maybe Samm, MAYBE, but definitely not Kira, sorry), so I'm dragging my feet.  I feel obligated to finish it before moving on to something else, so it's standing between me and the next Wheel of Time and...y'know...the rest of fiction.

I have a hundred pages rule: if a book fails to interest me within a 100 pages, than I feel free to drop it.

Edit: My library called yesterday. I now have to decide between Before they are Hanged and Alloy of Law. I must admit I got curious at the end of The Blade itself, so I started reading Before they are Hanged. Considering September is a very busy month for me, it'll probably take me the whole month to get through it, so Alloy of Law is being pushed to October. That's OK, nobody has put a reservation on it, so I'll likely be able to hang on to it till then :)

The Broken Eye is done. Very happy with it, but Weeks looks like one of those authors who thoroughly torture their characters. Which, yeah, it creates drama and tension, but I wish more good things happened to them...

I finished The Republic of Thieves. I enjoyed it more than I expected to based on the general impression I had from reviews. It was definitely the weakest GB book yet, considered as a stand-alone, but I am excited by all of the set-up it did for the rest of the series. I have a feeling that the remaining four books are going to be more connected and that the stakes are going to be much higher.

I just started A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller, the first Star Wars novel released with story direction by the new Lucasfilm Story Group. Expect a pretty in-depth analysis once I've finished.

You heretic. Come join the Red-Seas-over-Red-Skies-sucked-the-most bandwagon.

I just started the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I've heard some good things about it, and is definitely pretty interesting so far. I do like the narrative style for Harry Dresden, though. Kinda turns the whole "super calm, confident, enigmatic" Wizard trope on it's head. :P

*cough* Red Seas Under Red Skies *cough* :P

Alas, I cannot join that bandwagon. I found the overall plot of that book better than that of Republic (at least better than the plot of the present story), and I felt the fact that the plotline in the past was much better than that of the present in Republic, plus the fact that it had near-equal page count, undermined the book when taken as a whole.

I dunno... I liked Red Seas, and I loved the past plot in RoT, but I really didn't like the flow of the future one.

I wish there had been more flowing future sections, and it wasn't just, ok, elections, time to pull petty pranks and reconnect with Sab...

Then RoT would have been amazing...

Finished Gardens and am halfway through Deadhouse Gates. Once you get your bearings this series is fantastic. I never knew I had such a fascination for wicked swords until Draginpur and Annomander Rake stole my heart. Chance and the Otataral sword were cool too.

Question

Is there a big time skip between any of the two books? I might take a break somewhere if there is

Rake is, hands down, the winner of hearts. Not the sole, but the biggest one. You even get to see him fight against equals once or twice.

Time skips... yes and no. The books jump through time all the time. I can't think of a big skip though.

There are no huge leaps in time from 1-10 in regards to the present timeline. It all happens within just 4-5 yrs I think in that regard, but there are numerous sections in 1-10 that go anywhere from maybe 5-500,000 yrs in the past. It's all pretty epic.

Ed: I maybe off on that present line as it's been many yrs since I've finished but I think it goes from 1163-1167 or more Burns Sleep.

I just downright hated RoT and I'm mad I paid HC $ for it. I won't be doing that again unless I just hear the others are stellar upon release.

Keep reading. :)  If you enjoy the first couple, they get much better as the series goes along. :)

I just started reading Frankenstein for the first time the other day.  I've also been making my way through the Rogues anthology.  I got Frankenstein on my old kindle (one of the earlier versions from back in 2011) because it was super cheap and convenient.  I've been carting around the actual book for Rogues.  I've liked the stories in it thus far, and I have yet to get to Rothfuss or Gaiman yet, which are the two authors I was most looking forward to.

(Edit for silly typos.)

You can, if you don't mind take a break when you have finished book 4. Book 5 takes an entire different world. But somethings (I won't mention) will still be connected. Another downside is, Book 5 is one of the Best in the series. I compare it to DG.

Otherwise, it is written in stone, that you can check out Malazan any time you like, but you can never leave.
