MR75: Epilogue: Nightclub at the End of the World

The villagers glared at . He was cornered, back to the wall in a dead end alley.

“Running away from us? You must be one of the Spiked.”

“I don't think that's how it works,” said. “I just don’t want to die.”

“And we know you’re secretly a Thug,” Dive spoke over him. “When did you ever use that strength to help us? Well, we're wise to your tricks now. Prepare to die.”

“...yeah, alright.” unwrapped his scarf, revealing a massive pewter spike implanted in the base of his neck. “This what you were looking for?”

“Get him!” the villagers rushed forward, and burned pewter.

Preservation looked into the future, checking every possibility.

All of them were defeats.

The Spiked would tear apart Tyrian Falls. It was destined.

“Checkmate,” Ruin said in a satisfied voice.

The truth was, reflected, the villagers had thought things through. They came prepared to kill a Thug. Their plan wasn’t complicated: surround, stab with pitchforks and spears, and keep him pinned in the middle to bleed out.

He juked one of their weapons, snapped off the tip of another, but they just kept coming. A pitchfork pierced him and he wrenched it out of the wielder’s hands, only to careen into another blade behind him. More jabs followed. He struggled, and the points dug deeper. Sure enough, he was pinned down. Even  couldn’t overpower a whole village's combined strength.

“Guess you caught me,” he admitted, bowing his head.

He gave up and waited for the end.

“Thanks for getting them all bunched up!” Hail shouted down from a nearby rooftop.

"...nevermind,"  amended. "Backup's here." He knew what to expect, flaring pewter and raising his arms to shield his face. The villagers surrounding him just looked confused in the moments before impact.

Hail raised a fat purse of coins in his palm and mimed blowing a kiss, and the coins exploded out, ripping through the crowd.

grit his teeth but weathered the onslaught, pewter dulling the pain as coins tore into him. The villagers surrounding him weren’t so lucky. Many of them collapsed, clutching lethal wounds, and the few left standing scattered.

“Ow,”  said, picking the speartips from his body. “Couldn’t you have tried a little harder to angle some of those away from me?”

“Nope,” Hail said, stepping off the rooftop, falling, and slowing at the last second to land gracefully. “You’ll be fine. Thugs are built to last. Anyways, thanks for the assist.”

“Anytime,”  sighed. “Let’s regroup to deal with the stragglers.”

“This is new,” Stick was standing outside the old post office. It looked… different now. “A… night… club?”

“The nightclub,” Val corrected proudly. “First, best, and only.”

“Looks good,” Stick said, barging in. “This 'nightclub' is under new management. For Ruin!”

Some time later, the trio of Spiked met up inside, enjoying drinks.

“Koloss are almost here,” Hail said over loud music.

“Tyrian will fall,”  agreed.

“I’ll drink to that,” Stick said. They all raised a glass to toast.

In the Coppercloud VIP wing, a pair of nondescript strangers enjoyed their own drinks. If anyone had stopped to think about it, the presence of complete and total strangers in a town of this size might’ve been noteworthy. As it was, in the chaos of the Spiked takeover and impending koloss rampage, people understandably had other things to focus on.

“This is good,” Ruin said. “What’s it called?”

“That’s an atium bomb,” Val said happily.

“I’ll take another.”

“You know, in all our countless repetitions, there was never a nightclub before,” Preservation said. “Not once. I wonder what caused this deviation…”

“Isn’t it beautiful?” Ruin asked.

Preservation huffed.

“I suppose it's neat.”

“Cheer up,” Ruin said. “You’ll probably do better next time.”

“Well played,” Preservation said through gritted teeth.

“...but are you sure there’ll be a next time?” he added.

“What do you mean?”

“Like you said, things are heating up in Luthadel.”

“...I thought we had more time.”

“Our final confrontation approaches.”

“Well, I suppose that’s it then,” Ruin said. “Nice playing with you.”

Two gods died, and a new one was born. The Hero of Ages had come. The prophecy was fulfilled.

And yet, the two strangers lounging in Scadrial's first nightclub in a small village somewhere didn’t disappear.

“...it doesn’t feel any different," Ruin said. "Did you do something?”

“I have just as little idea of what’s going on as you.”

“I can’t use my Shard,” Ruin hissed.

“Me neither.”

"...but we're still here. We're supposed to be dead. How?”

“If I had to guess, we were too ingrained in our Shards to completely separate from them. An echo stayed behind. A version of us persisted, somewhere, tucked away in the folds of Harmony’s vast mind. That's what we are.”

“I wonder if Harmony is aware.”

“Probably not.”

“I suppose we should keep a low profile to keep it that way.”

“Probably.”

“Well, what now?”

“...how about another round of the game?”

“I’ve no objections.”

Ruin carefully packed up the pieces, and Preservation carefully laid out different ones, and the game began anew.

Game over!

The game ended on a night turn because, even with perfect play, the village needed RNG on their side to win. I decided to roll the RNG results in advance to see if a village win was possible. RNG said the Spiked Mistborn would draw Coinshot powers next, and that any tied vote tomorrow would break in favor of the Spiked, neither of which was good news for the village. See the spectator doc for more details on how that happened. It was fun seeing the village rally right at the end, even if it was destined to end.

...I was going to post the aftermath more punctually, but I was pretty beat on Christmas night and didn't really have a writeup in me. Since the game was already finished, figured I'd give it a little more time to cook. In retrospect I probably could've signalled that a bit better.

Thanks to @DrakeMarshall for running yet another great game.

Congratulations to the elims. @Stick. I see you told me the truth about your all coinshot thoughts xD. @The Unknown Ookla you did a really good job of staying under the radar until late game. @Ookla the Broken you played a really good elim game. I also want to add that I appreciate how fun and active you played as an elim. You put out a ton of content, thoughts and reads and I still struggled to catch you this game. That being said, I am still pretty sure everything I described as being a rioter worked *except* for me changing my mind about if my action was submitted in time or not xD. Mainly because Drake edited in the vote manip changes so I messaged you before they were edited thinking it was final and then I double checked and it was different .

@Doc12 I owe you an apology about not trusting you with IHAT. That read was spot on i just couldnt see it. Lol.  Also wild play PMing me at the end of D1 trying to get me to switch my vote onto IHAT with you when that was the literal exact player you did last game when you were evil xD

@Araris Valerian sorry you died early. I feel like that was in part my fault for not smoking D1. Tbh I didnt think much about mechanics at all this game and i wasnt sure if smoking or not was the right play. It wasnt until the night turn i figured Smoking during the day and not at night is likely optimal.

@Divergent... that was an incredible attempt to turn the game around when you came into the game... i have no words... or i mean... you can search your name in the dead doc xD

@Honors Ghost i apologize for tunneling on you most of the game... even though... i guess that was mostly in the dead doc xD. I had fun playing with both you and @mippo and would love to play more games with you in the future!

@Alvron im glad to see my v!read of you i tried to commit to after half the game was correct. That last day was very stressful for me trying to pick between you and IHAT xD. Similarly its only been 2 games @Experience but feeling good about my gut reads on you atm xD. 

@ThatOneWorldhopper I cant believe you shot me so early but no im glad you did idk what would have happened if I survived to D2 but I definitely didnt want conversations about me taking up most of the day that wouldnt have been good for us imo so good shot.

also since I did get some messages in PMs after dying about being interested in freely giving away their breaths... just letting you know im still open to that. Sooooo

overall in this game, elims played really well so i dont feel bad at all about losing. I do wonder though if we had managed to get a flip if we may have been able to sus out the others as there were pretty strong connections between you three. That being said, even though Stick was high in my exe list, it probably wouldnt have been hard to push me over to Honor or Ksauce in earlier turns and by then it'd still probably be too late.

@Ookla the Wallfacer @Alvron When the day ended and the game wasn't over yet, I thought either of you was lying about being Smoker and were actually a different power role to prevent the elims from killing you. Unfortunate it wasn't the case, but that final hour of D5 exchanging ideas was fun

@Ookla the Broken I have to laugh because your earnestness really fooled me. There were soooo many things that made me suspicious of you, but every time, I remember some of your more passionate posts and then I make up the excuses that "there's no way IHAT is elim", but I guess I really should have listened to my gut more and not put as much trust in you as I did. Those D4 PM exchanges even furthered my impression of you as town. Crazy good effort.

@The Unknown Ookla @Stick. @Ookla the Broken Congrats to the elims for the win! It was a lot of good coordination and teamwork to ensure that all 3 of you remained alive throughout the game.

To respond to one of the last mentions, I did have a lot of fun, and part of the fun was putting in the effort to try to solve the game both from the social side and the mechanical side. This was a very interesting game mechanically, and I really liked that it revolved around giving the elims the power to decide the rolelist.

Also, I read some of what you said about Blood in the Clocktower and it would be nice to have either the game itself translated here or an inspired version of it. And I wanted to ask, what do you think of Spy?  Do you think it's a fun role, overrated, etc?

@DrakeMarshall Thank you for hosting this game! As mentioned earlier, the setup was very interesting mechanically and I look forward to either playing or pinch hitting for your future games

I switch my name so much I don't particularly care, but since The Unknown Order (TUO) is one of my more common names, it just made sense to stay TUO for Ookla.

Dive, you did your best and I love you. Day 4 where you came in extremely biased against me but was willing to talk was really great and cemented my respect for you as a player. We almost got TUO then  

Special shoutout to @Ookla the Broken who I was suspicious of all game until you pocketed me day 4 by hard defending me almost all cycle before your sudden but inevitable betrayal  Not gonna lie, that last minute hammer really stung and I gave up on the game then.

I really hated it for the longest time. I think the more I play and more familiar I am with the game the more I am able to play with/around it... its just one of those roles that if youre new to the game and an experienced player gets spy it ruins the game. And if youre new and get the spy in person its a disaster. But I think virtually it can be more fun as a new player as you dont have to memorize everything.

You're both selling yourself short lol.  Trying to stay under the radar is a legitimate strategy and while it can be are little frustrating, there was definitely enough info to catch you we just didnt. Iirc in one of my first posts this game I called out how you were playing different this vs last game we were in together but I forgot about that as you did such a good job making me forget about you while still posting lol.

Jaime’s blade was bloody as he limped his way back into the camp. The people of Gathert fought well, but the Koloss offensive was unrelenting. It was a matter of hours, now. Then another town would fall, and the plague of death would spread.

Jaime pushed the flaps of his tent open briskly, prepared to gather his things and sneak away from this doomed battlefield - to find a thin, white haired stranger lounging on his pillows. Immediately, he whipped out his sword and pointed it, but the stranger lazily waved him down.

”Who are you!”

”Just the person you need.”

”Answer better, or I’ll see your head rolling on those blankets.”

The man sighed. “Ahh, soldiers. Always so quick to aggression.” The man reached down to grab something from his side, and Jaime immediately tended, but the stranger just pulled out a paper. Jaime watched intrigued as he carefully unfolded it, revealing a map of a town.

”What is that?”

At last, the man smiled. “An opportunity. Tell me, Jaime… how would you like to avenge your brother?”

Phew!

Thank you, everyone, for such an incredible  game (even if I was dead for like 90% - the real game was truly the dead doc we made along the way ).

So my biggest thanks go to @Furamirionind, my loyal companion in lifelessness, and @DrakeMarshall, our wonderful GM who definitely did not give us too many hints. Fura, ever gonna follow up on that Shardbuddy offer?

*ahem* That's kinda what I do.   

I told Drake this on D4 and later I told Doc but at the start of Day 4, I rolled an 8 sided die and compared the results to the player list which had 8 players left after I removed the dead and myself.  I thought that three elims would be about right for the way this game was set up so I rolled my die until I got three names.
Results were:
IHAT
Honor
Honor
TUO

I had a strong feeling that 2 of the 3 were evil but had Honor as the most likely chance at being evil or at least the one doing the killing.  Alas I was wrong in my translation.

I'm kinda disappointed Drake didn't reveal this to the dead doc as those that know me would've enjoyed seeing my dice still going strong.  

Many thanks to @DrakeMarshall for running this game and putting up with my nonsense orders about trying to build a nightclub.  The village may have lost the game but at least there's somewhere for the Spiked and Shards to relax until next time.
