Kazh came back into the open and went to stand by the other new person. "Who're you?"

"My name is Grace."

His scowl grew deeper. “I didn’t ask for your opinion on that,” he said.

"I'm quite sure you didn't, much as you're endeavoring to prove my point at the moment." Raviid passed Ji a plate of food. "If you intend to continue getting stabbed, it's important to eat well."

That.. literally doesn’t help lol.

You mean perfect, crispy, clear memory when he was highly stressed or am I just not getting it?

He took the plate, but didn’t eat. “Elya should be eating, not me,” he whispered.

Ok so when you are stressed IRL our brain will take all memories of that time and put it into long term storage, so I'm thinking that when John experiences high stress levels his brain will remember those moments perfectly.

So.. he remembers all those times of real high levels stress, is what you’re saying?

"You should both be eating. It's not a dichotomy."

Ji forced himself to shrug, then eat the food, though his insides felt twisted as he did so.

“We need to find more medical equipment,” he said after swallowing a mouthful. “Maybe a Lifegiver, if we’re really lucky.”

Meanwhile, in the flashback realm...

Elya's breath shook as she stumbled down the alleyways. Clutching her shoulder and holding in grunts of pain, she searched desperately for a place to hide. Blood coated her hands, dripping down onto the streets.

The Pacis would be here any second. She could already hear gunshots off in the distance. Were they just shooting anyone that got in their way? To think that they were that desperate to find her.

Wait.

No.

She squeezed her eyes shut. This wasn't real. It was just a dream. Nothing could harm her here.

Grace sighed with irritation. Just because I'm not a Mystic...

“Still not going to take up your offer,” Ji said to Grace, pointing his fork at her.

Yes exactly.

John finished cooking the steak, and carefully put int unto a plate an turned his grill off.

"I've got some steak down here if any of you want it!"

Elya sat down, slumped against the wall. Dreams were in her mind--a place she could command and control. She could close the gaping wound in her shoulder, end the shooting in the distance, fade the alleyways into darkness. Quiet it all, shut it down, and rest easy.

"Do you see their faces, even after you've done the job?"

Her eyes shot open. She glanced around, but couldn't see anyone.

“The faces of those whose lives you ended, reminding you of who you really are.”

Sucking in a breath, Elya closed her eyes again. It was just a dream; they were made from memories. But memories were just the past showing itself again. She couldn't change the past. It could only change her.

Just forget.

"If the girl has a plausible solution to offer, and we have no reasonable alternative at the moment, there's no reason to refuse other than sheer stubbornness."

He gave Grace, then Verim a wary eye. Ji paused in thought, then let out a sigh.

“Fine, but I want to test it first,” he said, his veins coming to life as a small blade appeared.

Ji rolled up his bloodied sleeve, then used the ghostly blade to make a small gash in his forearm. Blood dripped off his arm, spattering on the pavement below. He looked up at Grace, raising an eyebrow.

“The flask?”

"I have absolutely no intention of doing so," Grace retorted. Jerk.

Grace shot a glance at Verim, then sighed. "Fine." She pulled out the flask and carefully poured a droplet onto Ji's arm. The cut healed up as though it had never been.

He actually looked impressed. Ji carefully wiped the blood off––which only made it smear across his arm––and pulled his sleeve down.

“Alright then,” he grunted. “I can tell her about it when I bring her her food.”

Something that Ji had said. A person in a dream, when he'd been that close to death. The Inbetween.

What are you good for, if not to destroy?

Nothing, of course. She'd been created to do so.

You're more accepting than most. I'll give you that.

There was no use resisting what was. Only to go with the motions and fight with the tide.

And yet here you are.

She thought of all the companions she'd made over the last few days: Ji, Verim, Lyanor, Saaphir--maybe even Ne'ik, though it was too early to tell.

You're a killer, not a savior. Death follows you. It'll follow you here.

It'll follow you anywhere.

"Wonderfu-" Raviid broke into an intense fit of hacking coughs, dropping the plate he was holding and nearly doubling over. After a moment, he managed to straighten, the hand he'd held over his mouth covered in bright red droplets. "Hmm. That's not good."

He waited as Ji's cut was healed, then flooded Grace with questions. "How does it work? Do you just put it on whatever wounds there are, or do you put it in mouths? Do both ways work? If there are two connecting cuts and you put a drop in one, do they both heal? Can it heal diseases? Fungal infections? Are there any things it can't heal?"

Grace pulled out a knife and touched it to the excess blood. It was pulled in like water through a straw, flowing up grooves in the metal and into the vine-engraved hilt.

"I haven't come across anything that it can't heal, although I haven't tested it on everything. There's only so much power in a single droplet, and I don't have an infinite supply."
