  1. This was the last book in the series that I read, and I found it to be a big step up from the previous books. It just seemed like it was written with a lot more confidence, and you really got to know the characters well. I also agree with Briar King on how it is similar to Malazan's book 5 in a way.
  2. I haven't been active here in a while and I don't know who those top 4 are. A year or two ago I figured Peter would have the most rep by far. How times change.
  3. Man it's going to take at least a few decades until all of Brandon's currently planned Cosmere books are out
  4. I never got why people were so sad over Kelsier's death. I mean he engineered it himself and succeeded in his plans, so it's not like it was some big tragedy. It was more awesome than anything. He's my favorite character of Brandon's btw.
  5. FYI, The Only Joe, you're quoting Harry Dresden in your sig, but I'm pretty sure Harry got that one from Terry Pratchett. Looking forward to this series, btw.
  6. I forgot, I probably should have included this in my top 5: Dresden Files by Jim Butcher How many authors can get to book 15 in a series and STILL keep things fresh and interesting? Simply remarkable. Butcher's long term planning appears to be every bit as good as Sanderson's. Although I can't say any single book is among the best I've ever read, this is really a "whole is greater than sum of parts" thing.
  7. Hah, yeah I can't agree with this. Book 2 is great. 1-3 are fairly simple but enjoyable by WoT standards, while 4-6 is more complex and the high point of the series before Brandon took over. 7-9 are slower but have their moments. 10 is just bad. IMHO.
  8. I've read the first two. I was actually really enjoying book 2 at the beginning with Jardir, but I got tired of the book by the end. I don't care much for obligatory romance pairing up of characters.
  9. It's a blend of SF and fantasy. I see it as more fantasy because more of it takes place in the fantasy world. Stover actually considers the first book to be SF, and the second book to be fantasy. Either way, I think it would appeal to all fantasy fans who don't get squeamish about violence or language.
  10. Haven't gotten this far in Firefight yet (I probably shouldn't be in this topic), but I'm glad this apparently gets addressed in this book. I wonder if it came up due to fan reactions.
  11. Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson It has its highs and lows, but the highs are far higher than anything else I've read. And it's just crazy epic. Cosmere by Sanderson (Stormlight Archive if I had to pick one series) Nothing to add here. If Sanderson can keep up the quality of WoR, SA could become my #1 series. Acts of Caine by Matthew Stover Commonly considered to be the most underread fantasy series out there. Everyone should read Heroes Die! The Second Apocalypse by R. Scott Bakker Unlike Heroes Die above, this does not have mass appeal. But Bakker is absolutely brilliant. Probably the best writer on this list. Great for people who like their fantasy epic. That probably makes up the top tier of fantasy series that I have read. For #5 I'll go with: The Dagger & Coin by Daniel Abraham There's just something about these books. While there are very few "holy crap" moments, I just love the feel of it. If I'm honest I would have included A Song of Ice in Fire in the top tier, but it doesn't need my support. And the last two books have gone downhill. Also while The Wheel of Time is one of my favorites, I probably feel that way because it was my first fantasy series.
  12. When I was younger I subscribed to the "everything I like should be turned into a movie" theory, but I grew out of that. I'm mostly happy to have the books I like just stay books. While I think Steelheart would make a good movie, the other books would be harder to adapt. The only book I love that I think would make an awesome movie (with the right talent involved) is Heroes Die.
  13. Oh I'm going to enjoy it, but when I say "main" Cosmere books I am not including the Wax and Wayne books since those weren't originally Part Of The Plan.
  14. This is great news, however it's looking like 1 "main" Cosmere book every 2 years. Or you can figure that the rate at which mainline Cosmere books are coming out, is slowing down. With how many there are left I'm not sure if they will all get finished...
  15. I wonder if Brandon could just hire more people to take of some of the editing/revising that seems to stress him out so much
  16. Reading through the list just made me realize how solid the whole cast is. First time I can say that about a Sanderson book. Anyway I hate to go with the crowd, but Kaladin. He really grew on me in WoR. I love how everyone not in Bridge 4 tends to hate him. And how does Dalinar only have one vote? He was easily my favorite in TWoK.
  17. I'm a quarter of the way through, and I'm also finding the lack of italicized thoughts to be strange. I don't remember this happening in the last two books. Ian C. Esselmont also started doing it with his latest book...I don't get it. Otherwise I'm really enjoying this.
  18. Everyone says they didn't like him as much in WoR as in TWoK, but I found him much more amusing in WoR. I loved how he tended to rub everyone the wrong way.
  19. I'm gonna say Bondsmiths are the most powerful per person since there are only three and they are bonded to special Spren. I don't know how that's going to work with their Surges though. We will see.
  20. And btw I figured out Darkness = Nalan while I was reading the Lift interlude, as well as Nightblood. And I read somewhere else that Zahel = Vasher. That's about it.
  21. I finished the (fantastic) book last night. So I came here to see what little things I missed and there are way too many topics, mostly crackpot theories, so I have no idea what theories are generally accepted to be true. For example, in The Way of Kings it was obvious that Shallan had a shardblade, and that was a theory that was pretty much accepted to be true. What are some things like that in WoR, or can someone point me to a good topic? Thanks.
  22. This was how I used to be with A Song of Ice and Fire. I tried to get people to read and no one would listen. Then the show started, and now I get people asking me, "you ever read those Game of Thrones books?" Arrgh
  23. I'm also very busy right now and a slow ready...but I can't say I feel for you if you like to spoil things!
