  1. This. Turquoise, that you mentioned, is extremely soft. Basically, most non-metallic minerals are too soft to hold an edge for long, or are too difficult to work. Obsidian is a bit harder than glass, and doesn't shatter quite as easily, so it's a really good substitute for metal.
  2. Also, Dalinar is writing a book about the whole thing, so it's definitely going to come to light.
  3. He's not saying Marsh is on Roshar, but that he needs to see Marsh on Roshar, to test out the atium theory.
  4. Even today, with thermometers, cycle trackers, etc etc, it can take months or years to conceive. This idea does up the possibilty, though, so we'll see!
  5. We don't know exactly how Shards are Splintered. Rayse dealt Tanavast the killing blow quite a while before Tanavast completely died and Rayse could Splinter Honor. Tanavast's death took a long time, similar to Mistborn spoilers But we don't know exactly when or what it was. Just lots of questions still open about that entire series of events. I don't think Rayse is bound to Braize, I think he's bound to the Rosharan system. So he can move around those planets as he wants.
  6. Rayse would have made a truly frightening Ruin, I think. But, he probably didn't want to pick up Ruin, because he doesn't want to destroy everything. He just wants to be the most powerful.
  7. Yep, I mentioned that earlier. Scadrians wouldn't even need a lot of metal. A pound or so of each is enough for many Allomancers for most of the metals. A bit more for pewter, but still not a lot.
  8. Cultivation isn't that different from Ruin. Ruin is change-to-destruction, Cultivation is change-to-growth. I don't know if that mix would be a good idea...
  9. The Bands were pretty darn invested, were left that way for what? a century or two? and weren't anywhere near sentience, let alone sapience.
  10. It's not, the two paintings have quite different descriptions. First Lightsong Painting: Second Lightsong Painting (Battle of Twilight Falls) The painting Kaladin sees: And Brandon's commentary about the paintings:
  11. Here's a specific quote in the book where Kelsier Pulls on something behind him without looking at it. Also, when Vin didn't even know what the lines did, and definitely didn't see the piece of metal she was Pulling on:
  12. There's also the problem of timespan, though. Admittedly, we don't know how long it's been since Roshar was created, but it's only been about 10-15k years since the Shattering, max. Sapphires, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, heliodor, at least, take millions of years. Topaz, zircon(of decent sizes), garnet, usually require magma. Even Smokestone(quartz)/amethyst need very high temperatures and pressure that gradually eases off, although they grow relatively quickly, compared to the others.
  13. I think that there's not enough time for them to have a child by the time TLM rolls around. It's only a year or two after BOM. and mostly, it takes a while before conception occurs. I mean, it's possible, but I don't feel it's likely. And even if she got pregnant right away, the child would barely be talking and walking by TLM.
  14. I just paste the link into the reply box and the thread link and box populate by themselves The thread basically talks about how greatshells have died for millennia, their bodies getting covered over by crem. And that's where any mined gemstones come from.
  15. Oathbringer spoilers:
  16. The majority of the gemstones they have are from great shells and the like, including some that are raised specifically for their gemhearts. There are a few gemstones that are obtained from mining, but not many. This thread might interest you, I believe Brandon gave a nod of approval to it.
  17. Scadrial would also be able to field their Allomancers anywhere. They'd just need metal. And a little metal goes a long way, so they wouldn't even need a LOT of metal. Radiants would be limited by needing to recharge their stormlight, and they'd need some significant amounts of it, and they'd need perfect gems if they wanted to travel very far.
  18. Trying to avoid full spoilers, because I'm not sure how far they are
  19. Ah yes. The cook is the same species as Arclo from Edgedancer, yes. He's a Dysian Aimian. Kaza was a normal person who'd been affected by using her Soulcaster for so long.
  20. Welcome! Cultivation and the Nightwatcher are not the same person, although they are related. I don't remember mention of a cremling woman in the first Interlude of Words of Radiance, sorry? The Interlude characters there are Eshonai, who is a Parshendi, Ym, who is an Iriali cobbler, and Rysn, who is the Thaylen merchant from Way of Kings, who was trading with the Shin.
  21. It's not unusual for an extremely traumatized or mentally ill person to hold on to and repeat the same series of words constantly.
  22. I don't think so. The spren were created by Adonalsium and their bonds with the ecology of Roshar predate the Shattering, so I think Roshar and the spren were simply designed to work the way they do. Spren also exist on planets other than Roshar and take physical forms as well (Seons and Skaize. Seons, particularly, are literal embodiments of their Aons). They're just not as predominant in other places because Roshar is a high-investiture planet, and most others are low-to-medium.
  23. Here're a few fight threads for ya. The first one is Kelsier, but he and Vin are close enough in power level that it should be about the same. Edit: Found another
  24. Actually, the WoB is that he'd like to punch Honor in the face. I disagree with this for a number of reasons, but this latest WoB makes it pretty likely that Odium is lying to himself as well as everyone else.
  25. Or Brandon just likes to keep us guessing sometimes
