Observing that his companion was Ashyn, Hoid commented, "On my Honor, you should have some Braized chull!"

Rall Elorim definitely seems a good candidate! The mountains are a good indicator, and it being the "City of Shadows" makes it ominous enough to have some relation to Odium.

Sanderson's female protagonists all act the same?
GreyPilgrim replied to kogs's topic in General Brandon Discussion
This is definitely a topic which has come up every now and again. I think Brandon's female characters are definitely similar, but I don't think it is a real problem. The characters you mention are definitely sarcastic (Shai not so much) and witty, but I feel that beyond that they are really very different characters all with their own traits. Note also that these are really only a few of Brandon's female leads: Vin is definitely very different, Vivenna also. Marasi is sort of in between. The sarcastic and witty woman is certainly one of Brandon's favorite characters, but I feel that he gives them enough different traits beyond that to make them into round characters. -
[Theory] Investiture Reference Chart (Draft)
GreyPilgrim replied to jaelre's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Welcome to the forums! Glad to have you here. A few things to note: I would say the Physical component of an Investiture is basically the same thing as the focus, i.e. that which allows the investiture to function physically. That would put the atomic/molecular shape of metals as the focus/Physical component of the Metallic Arts. I would say in general that one's actions are not so much part of Surgebinding as they are part of the Nahel Bond; if one's actions violate the Ideals, the Bond is broken. The Spiritual part of Allomancy/Feruchemy, I would say, is either whatever power fuels them, same with Hemalurgy, or one's Spiritual DNA. More likely the power, meaning the power of the Shards.- 7 replies

Investiture across the Cosmere (WoR spoilers)
GreyPilgrim replied to darniil's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Of all the Investitures we know, I find it least likely that Hoid is an Elantrian; really, I doubt he has any Selish Investiture, as they are so geography-bound. He may know how to use Bloodsealing and Forgery, as those seem a bit more universal. Or should I say cosmerical. Edit: darniil, you have managed to ninja me twice in the same thread. I congratulate you. -
Great! Yeah, I love the series, but I know many don't. It takes patience, but I feel it has paid off. I know some think that characters are unlikeable; I find that you just have to take what you're given. Erikson does not beat you over the head with character development. He doesn't beat you over the head with anything, really. I really enjoy his subtlety.

Investiture across the Cosmere (WoR spoilers)
GreyPilgrim replied to darniil's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Remember also that moment when he was talking to Shallan in a flashback and used Allomancy, so he most likely burned his lerasium (also suggested by the Letter). That explains his access to that. Don't know how he could have gotten Feruchemy, though we have had discussions before of a way to obtain that similarly to how one can obtain Allomancy with lerasium. I don't really feel that one could need a particular type of sDNA to accept a Breath, however. Breath is basically pure Investiture that can be taken into the body, similar to Stormlight. My guess is that Hoid simply got Breaths like any Nalthian can, like Baine said. -
Spren Conspiracy to Steal Young Children
GreyPilgrim replied to Confused's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think that in a humorous light one can find this creepy, but in reality, these are spren we're talking about. They work totally differently than we do. Plus, childhood seems to be the perfect time to begin the bonding process. Children are certainly the most idealistic. The good traits portrayed as a child can easily stay such in an adult. If I were a bonding spren, I would go to a child, so I could nurture him or her and help them come into the ideal of my order. If spren looked to adults, they would find people who were a little more corrupted with the world. But, to use the wise words of Lift, children are so storming pure they practically belch rainbows. -
Honor's Shardpool could well be in Urithiru. That would actually make perfect sense. I really don't see any evidence for the Purelake being a Shardpool; as Moogle said, most seem to be in mountains, and the size of the Purelake seems to really deny its being a Shardpool. Despite it being a fan term, the "pool" aspect of "Shardpool" is based on the fact that all we have seen to this point is just that: a pool. Brandon's penchant for consistency and rules seems to indicate that all Shardpools would be relatively similar. What I wonder, however, is about Odium's Shardpool. He is Invested on Roshar as well, despite currently being on Braize. I would guess that that means his pool is also on Roshar. Have we any evidence as to where that could be?

As time passed and everyone around him seemed to be meeting up, Grim found himself alone. Which was not an unusual state for him; he had long been a loner. He much preferred to be an observer, without any particular affiliations. That was what had attracted him to this town, being on the Idris-Hallandren border as it was. He was part of no group in particular, safe to observe and criticize. At least, until they had come to him, with an offer he couldn't refuse. Well, he was able to forget his secret job most of the time. It didn't really interfere with anything. Now, however, things were seeming to come to a head. The peace meetings would begin in mere days. Grim would have to give up his state of nonintervention. He was caught up in the middle of everything, and there was no way out. He only hoped that the coming weeks would bring him some information. He wanted to know who was trying to kill him. So he could kill them.

Now reading The Bonehunters, Malazan book 6. Going well so far. Still liking the series!

Whenever works for me! I should be able to get to it within a fair amount of time whenever we start.

It is relevant to note however that we have WoB that Hoid is not the writer of the Ars Arcanum, meaning that we could potentially have seen a third Lightweaver.

question about Wit and Mraize (spoilers)
GreyPilgrim replied to agentprimus's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think Mraize just gets the masked man because he is a Worldhopper (though l think it may be the woman with him whose name I forget at present). IIRC, Zahel/Vasher gets it too, though that could be wrong (sorry I don't have my book with me so I can't check these things). Basically I think the masked man is Hoid or any other Worldhopper. -
To what fiasco do you refer? We do now know that bonding an Honorblade grants one Surgebinding, the Surges of the Order to which the Herald who owned the Blade belonged. Is that what you meant?
-
Ah yes. I had forgotten that quote. So I guess you can disregard what I just said. However, I still don't think the Listeners preceded life on Yolen.

Grim glanced down the street. There sure were a lot of people over at the Red Salmon. He wondered why so many loved it there. He had eaten there once, and not found the food anything of note. Plus, that lack of alcohol was certainly a downside to a good establishment; while Grim abstained most of the time in the name of duty, a good server of food should have plenty good ales and wines in his stock. Grim found it an odd mix of people come for the meeting; plenty of scholars and artsy types, yet no politicians. Too many books and cryptic utterings for his taste. He looked up as Swimim and that odd bard Elo sauntering down the street together. Grim rolled his eyes. Not enough straightforward people in this world.

Just because they're native to Roshar doesn't mean they came before the Shards, though. Evidence seems to suggest they have a close connection to the Shards of Roshar, so I would guess not.

This may have been asked before, but, and it is almost certainly a RAFO: Can an Elsecaller Worldhop?
