  1. If written well, Shallan's personality going forward should be different than Shallan's was in the previous system. It should be a more integrated Shallan-Veil personality. Shallan's joke machine should be tempered a bit by Veil's stoicness. There should be some direct indication of an attraction to Kaladin and a bit less 'always cuddling' and "I feel completely whole now" with Adolin. Things that she did as Veil will be things she does as Shallan now. So Veil is dead, but so is the previous version of Shallan. We now should get Shallan-Veil (or Veil-Shallan).
  2. It's possible that people were fighting the Radiants. Non-Radiant turned against Radiant when they found out the truth about humans destroying their previous world with surges. This could have been the last straw prompting spren and Radiant to put down the bonds to stop such a war. I have to reread the Feverstone Keep/Recreance vision again. Tanavast was dying in a slow process that made him seem crazy. An Unmade took over the singers. The Radiants trapped the Unmade in a gem. The singers were suddenly compliant slaves. Everyone found out that humans aren't native and destroyed their previous planet with surges. Radiants and spren decided to drop their bonds. The spren surprisingly ended up dead, turning into mystical swords that people fought over for the next several hundred years. This would be a great prequel for Brandon to write if he ever gets time. I wonder if he could squeeze it into a single novel?
  3. The Sibling left the tower, and presumably they're bond, before the Recreance according to the gem archive. We don't have a timeline for the events, so there's no way of telling. But the Sibling was definitely not bonded when the Recreance happened (because they'd be a deadeye).
  4. Good thing she didn't. Odium's forces wouldn't have a new weapon, but neither would the good guys. The good guys also wouldn't have Urithiru and the Sibling would be Unmade. So yeah.
  5. Next time you're kidnapped and forced to do science by an ancient immortal representative of Hate, let me know how well you do.
  6. The only spren we've talked to about the Recreance have been Honorspren, who all died (or were in a coma at the time). The current Honorspren have mostly sequestered themselves in their city, so are probably more ignorant than others. Stormfather wasn't himself, yet. Nightwatcher and Sibling weren't bonded (or they'd be deadeyes, too). The other spren societies may have been aware of the mutual decision. The passage of time and the huge difference in consequences between spren and human can change a culture's view of history, though. Honorspren literally didn't know it was mutual. Others could have easily and conveniently forgotten.
  7. Odium takes away the emotions that might interfere with someone's hate. Vyre doesn't have to feel guilt, longing, fear, worry, or happiness. His directed hate has nothing to impede it. That sound very much like Odium.
  8. I remember the first book being a slog. By the second book, it was like reading my future
  9. The Bond works both ways. Both Radiant and spren lose a bit of themselves to gain a bit of the other. Spren are Stormlight given form. Shut off Physical Stormlight and spren can no longer manifest Physically. They get stuck in the Cognitive, separated from their Bondmate. Enough of the Radiant is with the spren that the Radiant can't actually function in the Physical Realm without their spren. At least, that's how I interpret it.
  10. Kaladin almost spoke his 4th Ideal in Shadesmar in Oathbringer. At least, the windspren believed he was close. He has known what the Ideal is, has accepted that it is something he needed to accept, he just couldn't make himself get across the line. He truly believed that if he tried hard enough he could save everyone and wasn't worthy if he couldn't. There had to be a little bit of "close to 4th ideal", a little bit of "adhesion isn't blocked", a little bit of "Syl is a Tanavast spren", and a little bit of "Odium's powering him a little bit to try to create a champion". Lift is easy. She's powered by Lifelight, which isn't blocked.
  11. Anti-science is strong in this thread. Navani discovered something that the enemy will use as a weapon. It can also be used by the good guys as a weapon. It's now easier to kill Radiants. It's now possible to permanently kill Fused. There are way fewer Fused than there are Radiant spren. The use of anti-light favors the good guys. But the world hasn't thrown consequences her way because NO ONE KNOWS. Raboniel, Navani and the Sibling know where anti-Voidlight and anti-Stormlight came from. Raboniel is dead. Navani and the Sibling have an understanding about it. Also, Navani has these same arguments with herself after realizing the weapon she gave the enemy. Ultimately, she convinced an ancient spren to help save the tower and the Radiants she put in direct danger, killed the one that basically forced her to make the discoveries, and kept a notebook so her side could take advantage of the same weapons. I think she's made up for her discovery.
  12. He didn't form Stormfather into a Shardblade. It was basically a rod of light small enough to work the Oathgate. While it offended the Stormfather, there was no broken Oath there. There was a lot going on with Dalinar at that time and he ALMOST broke his Oaths and killed the Stormfather. However, his use of a Stormfather Shardrod (porn name?) didn't cause any damage. Stormfather is a spren and spren can form Shardblades. Stormfather just doesn't like it.
  13. First Otherland reference I've ever seen anyone use. I'm starting my reread after reading Ready Player Two. It's been long enough that I barely remember who Martine is.
  14. Ralkalest is the name Raboniel calls it. Singers probably called it ralkalest long before Odium arrived. It's also called ralkalest in the Rose Empire on Sel (Emperor's Soul).
  15. Taravangian as Odium is still bound by the contract that Rayse as Odium signed, so the primary conflict with Odium is still whether or not Dalinar ends up as a Fused. The Cosmere itself has a reprieve here. Taravangian doesn't have Rayse's obsession with destroying all other Shards. However, he probably wants to be able to leave Roshar, which would be the best way to save Roshar from the Odium Shard. The first full scene with Taravangian as Odium showed less of an internal struggle than it showed a complete multiple personality issue: This doesn't bode well for anyone. The next scene showed Cultivation trying to help him. But T's response didn't bode well either: These aren't the thoughts of a humble man looking to use his power to help shape a world that is great and wonderful for all. These are the types of words that despots use when they get power. They're going to fix everything! Lord Ruler had Preservation's power for minutes and nearly destroyed Scadrial with his will to fix it and his lack of knowledge. And that was the power to Preserve. No. Taravangian taking over for Rayse isn't going to be a good thing.
  16. My Occam's Razor view: During Kaladin's fall, Dalinar Connected Kaladin to as many things as he could find and throw at him and most of them just fell to the base of the tower. He was basically trying everything his Bondsmith powers could do. He finally stumbled upon Connections to the dead and got Tien to appear... This merchant happened by and picked up all of the items that dropped, trinkets for his shop.
  17. The quoted post didn't use the word hate. Didn't even say they disliked people with a certain opinion. They specifically said he doesn't understand the opinion. Lack of understanding is not hate, especially when the lack of understanding leads to curiosity. The post you quoted specifically stated, in the first paragraph: "And I am really interested in understanding other people. I should study this forum more, it seems." Either you quoted the wrong post, didn't read beyond the first sentence and knee jerked a reaction, or you're projecting.
  18. Definitely a relation. Read the Ars Arcanum at the end of RoW, Stoneshaping section: "I have sent my best agent to embed among the Stonewards." Could Zu be Shai? I can't imagine Brandon not turning Shai into a near immortal worldhopper.
  19. Adolin exists as a foil to several character traits (provide a touchpoint so we aren't completely numb to the possibility of stability in the face of so much chaos), currently for Shallan, but he has also been a foil for Kaladin and Dalinar in past books. He's become more of a main character to provide a path for Maya to awaken. The whole journey to Lasting Integrity was climaxed by Maya, while Adolin was completely ineffectual in the entire thing. He's also someone you'd like to have a beer with. That's it. He serves that person in the books well. Aside from his relationship to Maya, he'll mainly disappear in Book 5 and might die before the 6th book.
  20. "Burning Gold" is Odium, although his light is violet/black (could be an indication that the Vessel and the Power aren't cooperating fully). Red is corruption. Moash/Odium was sending Kaladin nightmares to open cracks in his soul for Odium to enter. The yellow-red eyes were an indication that Odium was successful to a point. Yellow/Gold to indicate that Odium was powering him. Red to indicate that there was some corruption required to do so. At least that was my take.
  21. Book 5 will end with a win with significant cost, few major dangling threads, and more hope than dread. Each individual book has ended that way, there's no reason to think the first half of the series, going into a IRL 5 year (?) hiatus, is going to end much different. There's also a big time skip between book 5 and book 6, which hints at some kind of victory or stalemate leading up to that break.
  22. Is Dalinar even aware of Tien? My take: Dalinar can see Connections. There was even a scene where he was practicing his ability to see the lines these Connections formed. He found the largest Connection from Kaladin to someone who was dead, someone Kaladin failed to protect. He used that Connection to pull a "Shadow" to Kaladin. I don't think Tien was pulled from the Beyond. The Connection between Kaladin and the remainder of Tien's Spirit Web allowed a creation in Kaladin's mind that mimicked Tien. ...and Teft, actually.
  23. I'm sure the Connection between the Vessel and the Shard is so strong that it continues after the death of the Vessel. I wonder if Dalinar performs his Connection vision trick on the bones if he'll see this Connection to Odium and be able to exploit it.
  24. Corrupted Investiture is Investiture that has been altered from its original Intent. Red eyes and red spren are indications of corrupted souls or corruption in Light form. https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?query=corruption A tiny explosion in an already pressurized container can result in a large explosion. The same tiny explosion in normal pressure (or out in the open) might not even be noticed. A tiny explosion is still an explosion. Light and its Anti-Light react by annihilating one another and creating outward pressure. If the annihilation happens in a gemstone, the gemstone explodes and the energy is released instantly at high velocities. If the annihilation happens in the open or in a squishy body, the energy is released slower. Still an explosion, just not as fast. That's to fix my semantics. The "explosions" in the case of the Fused occurred in the Spiritual Realm, I believe. Hemalurgic principles. As a Herald killing knife, the knife had to stab the victim to create a Connection to the Spiritual (I think Raboniel even says as much), where the Rysium "conducted" the Cognitive Shadow into the waiting gem. In the Fused killing knife, the Rysium was reversed. The stab resulted in a Connection and the anti-Voidlight was conducted into the Spiritual, where it annihilated the Cognitive Shadow (made up of Voidlight). The Voidlight - Anti-Voidlight reaction didn't even take place in the Physical, so no Physical explosion. Voidlight - Anti-Voidlight reaction in open air wouldn't occur instantaneously like it would in a "pressurized" vessel like a gem, so the instantaneous differential wouldn't be large enough to create a noticeable explosion. If I throw a full plastic cigarette lighter into a campfire, it would create a small explosion with a shockwave that would push a lot of the fire around. I've done it. If I take the fuel and spray it into the air and light the droplets, it will burn quickly and create heat, but there would be no outward air pressure to call an "explosion".
  25. I don't think Taln broke. The Everstorm was brought in, the Fused were given a way to return, and they stopped torturing him. He returned because he found himself alone.
