To be honest,I don't see why it would lock on to a specific focus. If I'm right in my thinking, focuses and/or the physical aspects are determined by the way it interacts with the Shardworld. If that interaction changes, like switching planets, then they would change too. We've already seen it on Sel, if the symbols for every part of that magic system changed, just from one canyon, I think that moving from one planet to another would be enough to totally shift it to something else. Do you have an idea about why it would be locked to one thing? I hope that this doesn't sound rude, I'd love to hear why you think they way you do.

No, I definitely agree with you. However, I think if a Shard left it's world then powers and focuses would start shifting on the magic users.

Hmm, interesting ideas Odium's_Shard, I'll have to keep thinking about them. I don't know that every magic system has mystical numbers though. I don't think AonDor does. However, you mentioned the Heightenings, and I've always wondered if there might be 16 of those as well, just no one has ever amassed enough Breath to get there. I could be off base though. Also, I'm pretty sure Preservation didn't pick 16, because Shards don't design the magic systems. They can alter them some, like Sazed did to snapping, but I'm fairly certain the whole 16 metals is part of the structure of Allomancy. If I'm remembering right Preservation actually had to remove two metals from the table when he created aitum and malatium mistings. He simplly used 16 as his sign, because it was his magic system. So I had a crazy realization today. There is one example of a Shardworld affecting it's magic system that we completely overlooked. Sel, and AonDor. The Physical aspect has a heavy influence on the cognitive aspect/focus of AonDor, in the Aon shape. This definitely proves that Shards and Shardworlds interact, it's just really visible in this example. I can't prove anything about Nathis and color, and Scadrial and metal, but I am certain gemstones are more abundant on Roshar, because they occur inside of all the native animals. I'm sure that the reason for other parts of magic systems would become clear if we had more details of the Shardworlds. Also this Sel example proves that these interactions are constantly changing too, because when the Physical aspect of Sel changed, the magic system did so too. I can't believe I missed such an obvious connection before.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Windrunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just off the top of my head, I would guess no. What a Surgebinder does is actually twist the spiritual gravitational bond around him, so he's pulled a different way, effectively canceling his gravitational attraction to the planet below for a time. When Kelsier uses Ironpulling for one of the first times in TFE to steal atium from House Venture, he misses his target by a bit, because gravity pulls him to the ground. I could be entirely wrong though. -
So I have a couple of pieces of evidence for my theory on the way the Three Realms formed, quoted from above, for those who are just reading this. So this is from Hero of Ages Chapter 78 Epigraphs So this quote comes right out and says that everything is made of spiritual power, which supports my idea that the Adonalsium, who made up the Spiritual Realm, created the Physical Realm. My other piece of evidence comes from the Way of Kings. They talk about a spiritual gravitational bond, meaning that the force of gravity is powered by spiritual energy, and presumably the other fundamental forces are too. This is mirrored by Brandon when he mentions spiritual gravitational superstructures that anchor time bubbles, so we know it's not because of in-world ignorance that they refer to the gravitational bond a spiritual. I think both these facts lend support to my idea. What does everyone else think?

Wow, that's crazy! Either I tapped a whole lot of connection and got you to e-mail me your theory and forget about it, or I read your mind through those Hemalurgic spikes all you admins have, just like Harmony! Or we're both just awesome, but I guess that goes without saying Oh and I found the quote we were both right. I love this database link thing! Anyway it's the Realmatic interactions of the Shardworlds.

There's been some disagreement going on about if the Hunger Games is a good series, but I think we can all agree that this is awesome! http://screen.yahoo.com/hungry-games-28507606.html#_=_

Funnily enough the Endowment recently arrived on Nalthis theory is also my own, I need to update that opening post with a better timeline though. The new magic system bit you brought up is a problem Chaos. I do have one potential solution though. Brandon has said that magic is formed through interactions between the Shard and the world it is on. I think that the physical aspect of a magic system is probably determined by the planet it originated on. What powers are granted and how they are focused may also be affected by the Shardworld. So on this hypothetical Shardworld Preservation and Endowment meet on, the conditions could be completely different causing different physical, and cognitive components, as well as entirely new powers. I don't think Preservation and Endowment would form a balence magic, but if Preservation went to Nalthis, and Allomancy occurred, who says it wouldn't be fueled by color, or you wouldn't have to say out loud what power you wish to use. And if Endowment went to Scadrial, couldn't his/her focus shift to metal? Also, Cultivation, Odium, and Honor are all on Roshar, which I believe determines the physical aspect, and maybe the focus, so they could all end up using the same one. We need to see Voidbinding and Cutivation's magic (Old Magic?) before trying to figure out anything more. The role the Shardworld plays in determining magic is extremely mysterious. I had one idea that a planet with a large quantity of something, like metal or gemstones, would have that thing as a focus, but that might be a little elementary. Odium's_Shard also has a couple of other possibilities. I'll keep an eye out for your focus theory Chaos, and hope it fits with this. Thanks for such positive feedback everyone, if anyone's interested they should keep an eye out for another theory I'll be posting about how I think the overarching cosmere story fits together. Oh, and Aikan Frost, how does the Shard-Complements Theory sound? I liked the way Chaos used it in his post.

So one of the things I've been wondering about lately is how Shards interact and relate to one another within the cosmere, since there have been very few interactions we have witnessed, other then the special case of Ruin and Preservation. I've had a couple of ideas about it. One thing that has always struck me as odd is that Brandon said that Ruin and Preservation are the only Shards with directly opposing intents. It seems odd to me that there would only be one pair out of all the 16 Shards. And then I got an idea. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Brandon has never refuted that all Shards are paired, just that they all have an opposite. So if they are all paired, then what defines the pairs? I'm going to fall back to Ruin and Preservation again. Yes they were opposites, but when Sazed used them together he came to a realization. They are complements too. They were two halves of the same power, and they belonged together. Now, if we accept this idea that complements, not opposites, are what's important in Shard pairs, then patterns become clear. Devotion and Dominion are one for certain. The way I look at it, it is the central conflict between Shu-Korath and Shu-Dereth, unity by love, or unity by force. I also think Endowment and Cultivation are a pair. They seem like two sides of a coin to me, either giving something what it needs, or guiding it through growth so it can get what it needs on it's own. Now you may ask, if there are Shard pairs, why aren't Endowment and Cultivation on the same world? Brandon has said that Ruin and Preservation were together because opposites attract. But all the other Shard pairs aren't opposites, just complements, so they don't necessarily have to have arrived on the same world. Another idea about Shards and their interaction. The idea behind the balance magic Feruchemy has fascinated me, and I tried to answer the some questions about it here. Anyway the basic idea that I have about balance magic, which fits with the aforementioned theory is that the Shard's intents both are represented in the a balance magic, although the way I believe it to work in Feruchemy may be wrong. In order for a balance magic to form, the Shards have to be complements, and work together, (not consciously) to create it. That's why on Sel there is a third balance magic, with just two Shards. That is also the reason there aren't like seven separate magic systems on Roshar, just the three that are there. Odium, Honor, and Cultivation aren't complements. Another, much more murky idea I've had has to do with intents. I wonder if perhaps Shards can somehow affect other Shards using their intent. That is why Odium didn't instantly destroy Honor, and instead abided by the rules of the Oathpact until the Heralds broke them. (I have another theory on this to be posted tomorrow) Odium had not choice because, for lack of a better term, Honor was "using" his intent on Odium. That is also possibly how Odium defeated both Devotion and Dominion. He "used" Odium on them, and got them to weaken each other by fighting. Then he swooped in for the kill. I realize that last idea was out there, I'm not even sure I like it yet. What does everyone else think of my ideas in general?

Mistborn Swat Team And other Lerasium Bead is stated by Peter here in the TWG Archives. Any other questions?

Yeah, I just clicked on the tag for Bavadin, that was probably the problem. Just out of curiosity, do you know why the 2 results glitch shows up?
-
You are correct, I almost forgot about this one. This wasn't in the database, I found it on the old Brandonothology. However when I searched Bavadin on the database, it said 2 results found but only displayed 1. It might have been a glitch.

Alight, I'll try to tone back the details a tad, while still hitting the big points. I think I understand what you mean Joe, like links to event articles at the top of the Section saying Main Article XXXX. I think I probably didn't have to describe the whole crew and their responsibilities. I started working on the Well of Ascension summary, and it seems to be a little more concise, how does it look? The biggest problem I'm having is untangling the web of details that Brandon wrote in. Every time I write about an event it requires explaining several things. I eventually end up feeling like it would be faster to type the whole book u, haha The Events section is a good thing, I was actually wondering if that existed. Is it admin only who can create articles? Because I was thinking the Battle of the Tower could use a page. Also, is categorizing articles difficult? Because if someone could explain it I can categorize articles I write too.

The year of the Dragon doesn't end until February 10 2013, so AMoL will still fall inside of it, just towards the final days.

I actually have a theory regarding this that I will be soon, so if you're interested keep an eye out. Putting it simply I think that every Shard has a pair, and they can sometimes be opposites, but they will always complement each other. Like how Sazed used Ruin and Preservation as complements, Devotion and Dominion complement each other, as do Cultivation and Endowment. The reason that they weren't bound together is that they weren't opposites. When complements reside on the same planet, a balance magic forms, thus Feruchemy and ChayShan. (although its hinted that there are possibly more ways to access the Dor) Odium's goal is to become the only Shard left unshattered. Brandon stated this in a quote. I can find it for you if you like. However he might also have feared their combined powers. this gets back to another theory I will be posting. I find it possible that the one of the reasons Odium still comes is because Honor is dead, but not yet Shattered. Odium is afraid that someone will take up Honor, so he comes to destroy all the Surgebinders that could. (Also possibly to fight Cultivation, Honor mentioned her in present tense implying she still lives, but it's from a vision in the past)

Upvoted! It doesn't matter about the summary, any information is better then the next to nothing we had. Do you know if the forgery thing applies to just stone, or other stuff too? Anyway, welcome to 17th Shard! I hope you'll like it around here.

I was actually referring to something on the award description page. There's actually two hints there, (not spelled out) but it was something I noticed in hindsight, so its pretty difficult to pick up on. I know I didn't notice it until later. On an unrelated note, I like the theory award idea. I figure if I keep guessing over the next 30 or so years this cosmere thing is going on, I'll eventually get something right.

Both if you wouldn't mind. We're pretty insane here so as much in depth as you can remember, thank you so much!
-
Would you mind describing what you remember of it? I think everyone else missed it

Skai's shard is definitely Dominion. Check out this link. Aona and Skai are on Sel, we know that Aona's Shard is something close to Devotion. Thus Skai's Shard must be this second one Brandon Brandon refers too. Silence Divine is in the Roshar system. There has been speculation that Bavidin, Cultivation, or the potential third Roshar Shard is there. (It depends if Odium has actually arrived on Roshar).
-
It appears that Shards can go wherever they want now that they've arrived on their world, they don't need any magical portals. A couple of other questions. Why do there need to be magical connections if people can just use Shadesmar to worldhop? Also if the Shattering killed everyone, why are there people on worlds without Shards? Unless you meant only the people on the linked worlds were killed?

I've always wondered if perhaps the Dustbringers are the 8th Order of Knights Radiant. When Kalak mentions them, it has always seemed to me that he's saying, "My guys did a good job". Kalak's Soulcasting property is metal though. I'm not sure that dust and smoke are similar enough, the connection seems tenuous to me. It says smoke, fog, and opaque gas. Dust isn't really close enough to a gas in my opinion, but I could be wrong. I think its more likely that the Dustbringers are a member of the Voidbinding equivalent of the Knights Radiant. Right after Kalak's mention that they did their work well (which can also be interpreted in a bad way) he says "But I survived". It seems to me that this implies that they were trying to kill him. Also the two names of the Orders that we have seen so far for sure are Windrunners and Stonewards. Neither of them has that sound of destruction the name Dustbringer implies to me.

Why do you subscribe to Brandon Sanderson?
Windrunner replied to Swifftalon's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I agree with you about the Brandon avalanche, though I like how he's spread it out a bit in HoA, so there are a couple of exciting plot peaks. I have way too many favorite parts to list them all but here are just a couple: Realistic characters I identify with and care about. Brandon's ability to defy expectations, just when I think I know what will happen he turns all my expectations upside down, and draws a conclusion better then I could have imagined. The innovative magic systems, they feel like science and make sense, and you can use logic to actually think of realistic theories, instead of a mysterious magic you never really understand anything about. Basically in my opinion, all other fantasy has begun to pale in comparison, haha -

You can trace it back, but it didn't begin with the Skaze, no matter how much influence they have now. Both Shu-Korath and Shu-Dereth, came from a common religion Shu-Keseg. They are based of different interpretations of one Jindoeese man's teachings. This man preached unity, but Derethi and Korathi disagree on how to achieve that unity. The Derethi believe it to be unity of mind, and domination. The Korathi believe that unity should be achieved through unity in love. Interesting enough, the different interpretations depict the Shards of the race they most likely created.
