  1. "Alright." Jane swung her pack around her shoulder.
  2. "You can try." She stood up. "But it might be difficult, with your talent."
  3. "Don't say that." Jane squeezed her eyes shut. "Just take the water. Drink it. Just do." Why wouldn't he listen. All her life she's been shouting to be heard over the noise. There was so, so much noise. But no one could ever hear her. Or listen to her. Because of that cursed noise. Too much noise. "These games shouldn't matter to you now, Aaron. Just focus on conserving the energy you have left. The life you have left. Isn't that what you want? Isn't that what everyone's supposed to want?" She fussed over trying to prop him up by a tree. And don't ask me to win the games, She added in her mind. I can't keep promises. And I don't want to fail someone again. Someone who counts on me. Who uses the remaining breath left to speak to me. But never listen. They never listen.
  4. "I won't kill you. I won't win. Please. Don't ask me to win. I can't win. Don't."
  5. "No- Don't say that-" She couldn't win the games. She couldn't pretend like she could. And she couldn't have someone's last words be asking her to do that for them. Not again. Please, just not again. "Save yourself first. Please. Stay alive. You can."
  6. "I- I can't. I won't. I." She shook her head, unzipping her pack and pouring some water on his wounds, cleaning the blood. She wouldn't look as her hands worked, trying to fix somehow what was happening to him. Stop the blood. Stoop the pain. Stop the death from seeping into him. There was so. Much. Blood. No. Please. She closed her eyes as she tried best she could to help him. "Here, take this basil leaf. Just focus on the taste. Not the pain." What more could she do? What more would she be expected to do? And how could she save him? If she couldn't save herself?
  7. "No-" Jane stepped back, though, hand on her daggers. Jane rushed to him, taking some of her clothes and wrapping a bandage around his wounds. "Aaron- Aaron slow your breathing. Look at me. No, look at me. Okay. You're okay." Jane fussed with his wounds, trying to make sure they weren't getting infected. "Breathe okay? Close your eyes if you want. Don't talk. Conserve energy. Please." Why do these things keep happening?
  8. Jane Cora Rae reached out to touch one. "Hey," she said to Aaron, eyes still fixed on the jars, "You seeing this?"
  9. "Aw, look at that," Jane paused for a moment, turning back to the direction of Aaron's voice. "Alrighty," Jane slowly crawled down from the tree, saying her proper goodbyes to the chicks of course. She noticed the bird from the corner of her eye and waved briefly, before hopping down the final stretch of the trunk. She walked to Aaron. "Who is it?"
  10. Jane picks up the axe with one hand, and lightly pets the chicks with the other. She laughs, leaning down to the one on her foot. "You must be pretty young!" She smiled, "Your mom must be so proud." Then, she looked over her shoulder at Aaron and threw the axe down to him. @Weaver of Lights She turned back to the chicks, petting and coddling each one of them.
  11. Jane Cora Rae gently reaches her hand out to the axe. She looks up at the bird. "Isn't it so fascinating? How the sun reflects on the blade?" Her hand almost touched the hilt. "Could I hold it?" She was asking the bird.
  12. "I must go inside. You may follow, if you'd like."
  13. "Nothing of importance, really. Simply leaves. The gardens. It's quite cold, isn't it?"
  14. Her head snaps back up, and she looks at him for a moment. "I was simply thinking."
  15. "This was my chance in life, Envoy. I don't want to attempt the unnatural. I don't want to escape. I want to go down in history as simply a number. A number of mass casualties from the Starfall. There's no point in trying to be unique or special or the chosen one. No, if I escape, I make life miserable for myself. I've done my time here. And soon, I'll be free."
  16. "No, because I do not believe I'd find something better for myself. And even if there was the chance..." She exhaled slowly, quietly. "I wouldn't take it."
  17. "Whatever you were doing before, of course. Or escape the Starfall, as you so claim you may be able to do."
  18. "Oh, come on," she mutters under her breath.
  19. "Can't you guess? This. All of this. This life. These people. This place. My family, my title, my situation. All of it. I want to be someone else entirely, in the little time I have left."
  20. Jane Cora Rae locked eyes with the bird, then sprinted. Running, running- As quickly as she possibly could, without thinking of her speed. And smiling. She felt at peace, but her heart beat loudly in her chest. She felt safe, though she was in extreme danger.
  21. "I will leave this world behind. For as long as I can."
