"Better?" She asked, biting her lip a bit as she nervously watched him take a step.

"Alright," Jane stepped back, having finished adjusting crutches. "Try taking a step."

"Okayy!" Jane said with her positive cheery tone, stepping back. "Well, you're standing!" She started to hum I'm Still Standing as she adjusted his stilts and bandages to work with the crutch under his arms.

Jane picked up the remainder of the branch that she had picked out for stilts. She had already split it off into two, sturdy branches. "Here, try to use this. See if it works as crutches." She offered her hand to pull him up, holding the makeshift crutches in her other hand.

Jane crossed her arms. "No promises." She tossed him the last of his water reserve, which she had been carrying in her pack alongside her own. "Hey, drink this. You think you're good enough to walk a bit?"

Jane stood up slowly, while shaking her head and saying "No." "No, thank you though, Aaron. That's awful kind of you to offer." She brushed herself off. "But if I want to last long enough, it'll have to be a game. I'm pretty good at games- we can set some bets. Not expecting to live, of course. Just... last. But I'll need to kill. To get any further than I have, I'll need to kill. I'll need to use cold-blooded murder as my own weapon to defend myself, and maybe that's why I was chosen. To learn how to stick up for myself. Independence. I believe in destiny, y'know? It's all there." She gestured to the sky, "In the stars- in fate. I guess that kind of thinking makes one less fortunate feel better. Right? It does feel better, thinking there's some divine force out there, laying out your destiny. It makes the choices and decisions you face feel less... difficult. And besides," Jane shrugged, "I always wanted to get better with knives."

"Done with what?" Jane said, with an exasperated raised tone. Tears formed in her eyes. She was tired of constantly instilling false hope into her mind. "Done with the games? Done with being killed? With killing everyone else? Done with killing each other? We won't ever be done, Aaron. Can't you see? We're all going to die or be the winner. And whose to say the winner lives? How many people do you know who have actually won the Hunger Games? We won't even know- we'll be dead by then. But the winner? The winner doesn't win anything. There's nothing left for us in this life. So I might as well go on worrying about people who have a chance at living past this. People that we've left behind. Like Aspen." Jane crouched back down. "Sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to lose it." She exhaled slowly. "It's just. This whole game. It's driving me to paranoia. Slowly, at first. Then spiraling uncontrollably. I can't help but think that our chances for survival keep shrinking, and no one's looking out for us. We need to either step up or be stepped upon by someone else." She looked at him. "And I don't think I'm ready for either."

"I thought the same when I heard about Pheonix and Hestia's-" She stopped herself. "I just can't help but worry about Aspen. It's been so long, and we can't even talk to them, and he's all alone with my mother and my father and Delilah and four of his siblings are gone now so he has no protection and he's just my age and it's so dangerous with them and I don't even know if he's still-" She paused again, took a breath, then finished, "Yeah. I don't know. I guess it's better for them to be in the capital. Safer. Maybe. Than here. Predestined death. Yeah. I think you're right. Maybe." "Hopefully." She corrected.

"Any of it would be better. I just wish Aspen wasn't so far away." And Delilah? If only she was far enough.

"Yeah. I wish we were born somewhere else entirely. We lived somewhere across the world. In another time period. Another place. Another name, another identity. And we could forget. And heal. Instead of fight here. And die."

"Felix told you?" Jane grinned and the thought of her introverted, caring sister. Hestia was a kind soul, who had worried far too much about her appearance and was so young and hopeful. She had enjoyed all the joys of life and always wanted to feel more sunshine or taste more rain. Her eyes were wide open for the sweetness of life in the capital. She was the least... deranged of the six children. When Lily was born, Hestia had loved taking her out for walks and braiding Lily's short tufts of hair. She was always in silent arguments with Delilah, and was the only sibling Pheonix respected. Hestia was always awake earliest- before the sun. Quiet, but cold to the parents, as were all children (except Delilah). They, of course, had no reaction to the news of her death, the day she and Pheonix had gotten into a terrible accident. She died far too young for someone like her, still experiencing the world and its vibrant colors. She was 19 this year, and Pheonix was a year younger. They had died two months ago. The horses of the carriage had apparently gone wild. But when Jane approached their bodies in the casket during the funeral... They both had five small fatal gashes, clearly made by a dagger. Not a horse. A dagger. Jane made the mistake of questioning her parents that night at the dinner table in front of Aspen, her twin, and Delilah, who is 21. Days later, she was sent to the Hunger Games. I just hope Aspen will escape.

"Okay. Two of my sisters died too. And my older brother. Actually, I used to be one of six, but I killed- accidentally- killed-" She paused. "Well. We'll get to that later. Nevermind. But my point is. I think it's okay for me to tell you. I think I knew Felix through my sister. Hestia Sylvie Rae."

"Oh, nothing. Just um, something my sister. Well, nothing." She thought over it a few times in her head. "Actually, you said your brothers died right?"

"Oh twenty that's." She just raised her eyebrows, unsure of what to say. "That's funny."

Jane froze for a moment, then slipped back into her casual smile and relaxed demeanor. "Well, there's Delilah. And my annoying twin Aspen... And then there was also Pheonix but whatever. And I had like. Two other sisters. But yeah. Um." She readjusted her top, which had a frayed bottom now that she had ripped off some cloth for his bandages. Seemingly preoccupied, she asked, "And how old did you say they were again? Like Felix? Or, or Adrian or Gemma or Freddy or whoever. Like their, y'know," she looked up, "Ages?"

Jane brought a hand to her lip, thinking. "What were your siblings names, again?"

"Sixteen..." She stood up, having finished re-wrapping his bandages. "I think I know you," She shook her head, "I mean, I think I know someone you know through someone I know. It's like... Destiny brought us here, in these games." She shook her head again, "I don't think I'm making sense anymore. When I'm cut off from my typewriter, I no longer can spill all of my nonsensical thoughts out on paper, so you're stuck with them." She shook her head once more, "I'm sorry. Aaron." But there was still something familiar. He was fifteen. Thirteen during the rebellion.
