  1. HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!! I'd do crab emojis but that seems slightly disrespectful to them considering she did a little bit propose crab genocide
  2. I don’t see anything weird about it. He got feedback from fans and beta readers who went “I see some of myself in this aspect of the character” and decided to explore that aspect of her. Authors can make characters a specific sexuality for reasons other than appealing to a certain demographic. Maybe it’s needed for thematic, or plot reasons. Maybe it just feels right. Maybe he just wants to. Brandon listened to feedback from fans and beta readers and used it to inform how he wrote the character going forward. What more do you want?
  3. I feel like at hoid’s age the difference between Shallan and Jasnah in age is meaningless
  4. Shallan is happily married to Adolin, but that has exactly 0 effect on whether or not she's bi since a bi person can be happily married to a guy. And the idea that she's bi has been kicking around since book one, since her interactions with Jasnah were read by many as a crush, to which brandon said he didn't intend this but it was a valid interpretation. So between this chapter and that, there's definitely evidence she could be something other than happily het. Is it possible that veil is ogling other women for Adolin's benefit? It's possible that's what he's going for, I suppose, but frankly I'd be pissed at brandon if that's what's happening and I like to think he's better than that. It is way, way too common for people to think bi women are just doing it for men's attention, which is just. Not true, and is an idea that harms so many bi people. Plus, sexuality isn't a choice and while Shallan's magic DID complicates things a little it doesn't seem like she has enough control over her alters to make one of them gay. Plus, sexuality being a choice is way too prevalent an idea and I like to think Brandon wouldn't perpetuate it even if it would make slightly more sense in this particular narrative than it does in reality
  5. This is a really good theory. I think it fits really well with Brandon's style and with the text.
  6. Ooh I like this theory. When dealing with hemalurgy, I'd imagine the "spren" would be the other person's soul, not Ruin, unlike in allomancy though.
  7. Formless is just personification of her comphet, confirmed
  8. In... I think way of kings, there's a bit where you can put together the pieces of something and get something new. I think that's basically what Dalinar has done. He picked up the pieces of Honor and put them together into something new- Unity. "Unite them" is, intentionally, vague and refers to multiple things because Dalinar's purpose as Unity wouldn't just be to unite the kingdoms, or the humans and the parshendi or anything like that. His Intent would just be Unity, in all its forms. This would make for an interesting counter to Odium because Odium as a shard doesn't want his Intent tainted by other shards but Unity, by definition, would. (This does get rid of the possibility of Odium, when he said "No! We killed you!" He's referring to Adolnasium and not Honor, which does seem like exactly the kind of twist Brandon would pull.)
  9. There's been a few WoBs about this actually
  10. Based on their relationship I could *potentially* see it, there have definitely been things that could be interpreted that way, but based on who Brandon is as a person it seems highly, highly unlikely. And I *really* hope it doesn't end up being the case, that's... no good
  11. So does this mean that the half-shards are repellers of some sort? The coppermind says they're augmenters, but since the magic isn't fully understood they easily could have been miscategorized
  12. I think the big question here is whether silver is useful for fabrials.
  13. If the Servespren are used in Oathgates and Soulcasters and such, I'd have to imagine the spren themselves are related to those surges in some way, so I doubt it's just adhesion and tension
  14. I’m pretty sure Brandon has said somewhere that for all metalminds, the attribute is stored as investiture. So if I’m storing identity, as I store it it becomes investiture trapped in the metalmind. And then as I tap the aluminum, it converts back from investiture into identity. I don’t have an exact quote though; maybe someone can find that. See this is why I’m confused, because even just in this thread we have to conflicting ideas about how it works. So the way Oltux is thinking, it acts more like a hemalurgic spike, but also Gilphon has a point that since it’s removing rather than stealing it may not act like other spikes. I’d be inclined to believe Gilphon’s theory if only because Oltux’s way involves Investing in aluminum but since we know you definitely can invest in aluminum through Feruchemy it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to think you could invest it using the related system Hemalurgy. Hence my confusion. I’d love to see it in action honestly, to get an idea for how it works.
  15. Do we know anything about how they do this?
  16. How exactly does aluminum work with hemalurgy? According to the table it "removes all powers" but how does that work?
  17. I was looking through some WoBs and came across this in which, after floundering for a while, Brandon says allomancy is powered by Ruin rather than by Preservation like we know it is. (Emphasis mine) Would it be possible to get a foot note stating that he likely meant preservation, rather than ruin?
  18. I think it's more that metals, in the cosmere, have some sort of universal investiture-related properties that both the Metallic Arts and fabrials tap into (which also really makes me wonder what the connection is between the metals' properties across Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemallurgy). I bet there's even some weirdness with Nalthian and Selish magic, though maybe not anything relevant enough to come up in the books, probably just something very minor. We know aluminum is consistently weird though. I suppose you could consider any magic like Fabrials that interacts with metals to be a metallic art but that's probably not how I'd categorize it personally. That's just a semantics issue though. However if this is true it really makes me wonder about silver. It clearly has some investiture property like we saw on Threnody, but it explicitly has no use in the Metallic Arts. Can you use it for fabrials though? Why is it different on Threnody?
  19. I'm pretty sure this is at least part of the reason why Straff was a sex addict, and in general probably had an addictive personality
  20. Isn't that kind of exactly what he's doing with Maya though?
  21. Interesting, the theories about tin were right
  22. It seems very useful to me honestly. Say you're in a combat situation- instead of having to fight through the pain, you can just get rid of your ability to feel it then deal with it later. You could even tap your sense of pain later when you are dealing with it so that you can get a more accurate sense of where your injuries are. Also, could I theoretically store something like color vision as opposed to my whole vision? Or night vision?
  23. So in the Rhythm of War epigraphs, as I'm sure we're all freaking out about, it's being revealed that the allomantic metals seem to have universal properties of some sort with regards to investiture- the known effects of metals on fabrials is very similar to the allomantic effect of that metal. We have seen similar universal threads as well. Color is an important property to both Nalthian magic and Rosharan magic (specifically with regards to gemstones, in the case of the latter). There seems to be a correlation with sound as well; allomancy produces sound that bronze burners can pick up on that is related to the Rhythms of Roshar. This leads me to wonder if the 10 Essences used in Soulcasting have similar cosmeric properties as well. The ten essences are as follows: Essences Number Gemstone Essence Body Focus Soulcasting Properties Divine Attributes 1 Jes Sapphire Zephyr Inhalation Translucent gas, air Protecting Leading 2 Nan Smokestone Vapor Exhalation Opaque gas, smoke, fog Just Confident[nb 1] 3 Chach Ruby Spark The Soul Fire Brave Obedient 4 Vev Diamond Lucentia The Eyes Quartz, glass, crystal Loving Healing 5 Palah Emerald Pulp The Hair Wood, plants, moss Learned Giving[nb 1] 6 Shash Garnet Blood The Blood Blood, all non-oil liquid Creative Honest 7 Betab Zircon Tallow Oil All kinds of oil Wise Careful 8 Kak Amethyst Foil The Nails Metal Resolute Builder 9 Tanat Topaz Talus The Bone Rock and stone Dependable Resourceful 10 Ishi Heliodor Sinew Flesh Meat, flesh Pious Guiding Now we don't honestly know too much about these, so it's hard to speculate, but the ones that stand out to me are metals (as seen in the metallic arts and now fabrials) and blood (as seen in hemallurgy, and possibly also relating to why dead shardblades need 10 heartbeats). Do any of you much-more-knowledgeable-than-I people have any thoughts on this matter? Or theories for how they might connect, however unfounded they are?
  24. Even then though, we'd have to find a use for having lots and lots of Identity. I'm sure there is one, just like I'm sure there's a use for normal A-Aluminum, but we and the Scadrians would need to find it first.
