  1. Congrats! On a related note, anyone here active in Model UN?
  2. Frankly, I think 2020 as a whole could be summed up by one of those gosh-awful spoiler pyramids that just have nothing at the end.
  3. We're about to enter the time of year known in the movie industry as "awards season." In honor of this, I decided that it is of the utmost importance that we, the Shard, determine our all-time favorite movie. Hence: the All-time Shard Film Awards, nicknamed the Brandons (instead of the Oscars? Get it?). Here are the rules: nominations are now open. Nominate up to three films by DMing (or is it PMing? I can't remember) them to me. Nominations will close at 11:59 PM EST on December 31. The top ten vote-getters will then be voted on in a public poll. Certain film series (ie Lord of the Rings) will count as one film. In the case of ties, I will break them with my personal opinion. Feel free to campaign for your favorites, and be sure to drum up participation! May the best movies win!
  4. An exclamation I'm particularly fond of as a curse-substitute is "Barnabas!" (For no real reason, so if anyone here is named Barnabas, I have nothing against you. I actually quite like the name). So I'll probably try to work "Barr-Nabbas!" in as a swear word in my book at some point EDIT: This is me playing catch-up to conversations that ended a week ago
  5. I've been on vacation the past week or so and didn't have access to a computer... but it seems I didn't miss anything, thankfully! (Right? I didn't miss anything, did I?)
  6. Out of curiosity, though, who first had the thought: "romance ... but with vampires!" And then how did it become such a weirdly huge phenomenon? And powered almost entirely by teen girls? Not dissing Twilight, I haven't read it. It just seems like just an oddly niche thing to have spawned such a huge genre.
  7. My crew also talks sports, politics, schoolwork, and Marvel.
  8. I read The Missing Prince a couple of weeks ago. It was okay. Better than the previous two - about on par with Return of the Temujai. Not as good as everything else he's written. IMO, anyway.
  9. I'll join as Breeze, if that's alright.
  10. The Hercule Poirot books I've read so far (be warned, there are obviously spoilers): (Also for those who were wondering I've been on vacation and so haven't been posting) The Mysterious Affair at Styles The Murder on the Links The Murder of Roger Ackroyd The Big Four The Mystery of the Blue Train Peril at End House Lord Edgware Dies Murder on the Orient Express Three Act Tragedy Death in the Clouds
  11. One way would be to arrest them, or some such use of brute force. Or you could trick them into thinking it isn't prison. Or use somebody else as bait (whether they are actually there in prison or not).
  12. Gonna need a bit more detail.
  13. Us boys don't need purpose when we have each other! But we don't need purpose in this context!
  14. Certainly. How's Shardbearer?
  15. Ah... good to know. Well, thanks everybody for answering my question!
  16. Not an LDS (a LDS? Or do you just say "Latter-Day Saint" or "Mormon?"), and I know very little about the denomination, so I was just curious: do y'all consider yourselves Christians, and why or why not?
  17. Which fact is what started this whole conversation. The circle is officially complete
  18. I'm notorious for being bad at briefly describing things without spoiling them (as an example: I once summed up The Pursuit of Happyness as "Will Smith being poor." My summaries of Merlin episodes, on the other hand, can run up to ten minutes.) Nevertheless, here's my attempt (only for the WoK. That's the only one you have to get them interested in, after that, Brandon will do the rest): "The Way of Kings is an epic fantasy novel that follows the intertwining stories of an enslaved footsoldier, the uncle to a king, and a young noblewoman from a foreign country. They must face monstrous creatures, the dreaded highstorms, and their own tortured pasts as they seek to unlock the secrets of their magical world." Alternatively, you could read them the instead flap of the book. People are paid to write those, so they're generally pretty good.
  19. Actually, it is!
  20. Sociology. Hm. Crew Leader, I guess? Nothing's been great thus far. Spren was kinda funny at the very beginning.
  21. Me either, unless you count dramatic reading aloud to siblings and occasional reenactments of Shakespeare scenes for school
