It was Kelsier. Or so he thinks "But why could Vin hear me? What was he missing?" -- this is right after the Hoid/Vin Scene "Over the next few days, Kelsier tried to replicate his success in getting Vin to listen to him. Unfortunately, Ruin was watching for him now. Each time Kelsier got close, Ruin interfered, surrounding him, holding him back. Choking him with black smoke and driving him away." -- from beginning of chapter right after Hoid/Vin Scene "But anytime Kelsier tried to speak directly with her, Ruin punished him." -- from beginning of chapter right after Hoid/Vin Scene Ruin knows Kelsier can get through to Vin "the moment in the third book when Vin gets creeped out by Hoid is a very important moment, Cosmerologically, but I'm not going to tell you why!" SH came out just a few months after this WoB. Brandon, presumably, didn't tell us why this scene is important because we'd find out more about it when SH came out just a few months later @Dreamer it looks like we were both right final Edit: "I went back and forth on this one, honestly. I knew Keslier would be involved, but one thing I was really worried about with Secret History was undermining Vin's story or her agency. While I liked Ender's Shadow, the closest parallel I knew of to a story like this, I didn't like how it weakened a lot of what Ender accomplished and gave it to Bean instead. (I think I've mentioned this in conjunction with Secret History before.) So I wanted something to have stopped Vin, regardless of whether or not I ever wrote Kelsier's behind-the-scenes story or not. The official answer in my head is not that it was anything specific, but that the whole package that Hoid was presenting was WRONG to her. Her instincts picked up a dozen subtle cues that he was more dangerous than he seemed, and that made her freeze and assess. And that gave Kelsier the chance to nudge her away. I wasn't trying to lead people to figure out a specific answer, with those comments. I was trying to hint that something was wrong, and Vin didn't quite know what set her off--because it wasn't one thing, but many. So I don't have a smoking gun, so to speak, of things Hoid was doing to drive her off." it was a mix of Vin's own instincts that Hoid wasn't what he seemed and Kelsier telling her not to.

Kelsier in SH "“Vin,” Kelsier said. “Vin! Listen, please. That man is trouble. Don’t approach him. Don’t—” Vin cocked her head, then leaped off the roof, away from the Drifter. “Hell,” Kelsier said. “Did she actually hear me?” Or was it a coincidence? Kelsier leaped after Vin, tossing himself carelessly from the building. He didn’t have Allomancy, but he was light, and could fall without getting hurt. He landed softly and sprinted across the springy ground, tailing Vin as best he could, running through buildings, ignoring walls, trying to stay close. She still got ahead of him. Kelsier … Preservation’s voice whispered at him. Something thrummed through him, a familiar jolt of power, a warmth within. It reminded him of burning metals. Preservation’s own essence, empowering him. He ran faster, jumped farther. It wasn’t true Allomancy, but instead was something more raw and primal. It surged through Kelsier, warming his soul, letting him reach Vin—who had stopped in the street before a large building. Soon after he reached her, she took off again down the street, but this time Kelsier managed to keep pace, barely. And she knew he was there. Vin in HoA "She was being followed. She only caught hints of him behind her, obscured by the patterns of swirling mist. Tentatively, Vin burned bronze, and was rewarded with a very faint thumping from behind. An obscured Allomantic pulse. I think a small part of him got to her, or maybe it was just after.

So in HoA Vin is supposed to go see hoid about something but as she's walking up she gets a sense that something is wrong so she turns around and leaves without a word. This scene mirrors the one is Secret History when Kelsier finds Hoid and touches him and gets jolt through his "body" I just realized that the reason Vin turned around was because Kelsier got through to Vin's mind/subconscious and told her not to talk to him I love how much foresight Brandon has when it comes to things like this. This WoB is relevant: Brandon Sanderson No, that was something I wanted to do from the beginning. I was inspired by Isaac Asimov combining his Robots books and his Foundation books, and he did it late in his career. It kind of felt a bit hacked together a bit, but it blew my mind when he did it and, as a writer, I always thought, what if somebody did this from the get-go. The actual origins of the kind of worldhoppers for me was reading books as a teenager and inserting Hoid into them. I really did this.... Do you read books and you like change what is happening in the book, or maybe it's just a me thing? I would have my character interacting with the characters in the books, in my head, as I played the movie of that book in my head, while I was reading it, and there was this character hopping between worlds, with this knowing smirk on his face. And so, when I was working on Elantris I said, "OK", I knew I had something in that book that was good, that was important, that was relevant, I was very confident in that book. It was my sixth novel, by the way, so I kind of had a handle on these things, and so that's when I decided I'm going to start doing some of this, I'm going to insert Hoid into this and I'm going to start planning this larger epic. It was particularly important to me because I knew I was not going to write a sequel to Elantris immediately, but I wanted to be writing epic stories, and the reason I didn't want to write a sequel to Elantris is because, if an editor rejected Elantris I wanted to be able to send them another book, because when you're getting close to publishing you'll start getting rejections that are like "This is actually a really good book, it doesn't fit our line, you just wrote a great mystical llama book but we just bought one of those, do you have anything else?". I wanted to be able to send them "here's my next thing" rather than "oh, I've got a sequel to the one you just rejected". And so I sat down and wrote the sequel, which was not a sequel, it was called Dragonsteel, which was Hoid's origin story. And then I jumped forward and I wrote White Sand which is another book connected to all these things and it went on, you know, it went crazy from there. And then when I actually sold Elantris it was already going and already in there, and I was able to sit down and write Mistborn, well in hand, knowing what was going to happen. That's why you find Hoid in Elantris and Mistborn and the sneaky, the scary-- well, it's not sneaky and it's not scary-- the moment in the third book when Vin gets creeped out by Hoid is a very important moment, Cosmerologically, but I'm not going to tell you why! No it wouldn't. The parshendi losing their Identity is a little more metaphorical. They mostly lost Connection and because of that they lost the ability to switch forms, trapping them in slaveform. Questioner In terms of discussing Identity, I know that in Emperor's Soul, they talk about Identity, and the Parshendi talk about losing their Identity, and then I was just rereading Bands of Mourning, and one of the kandra talks about how the spikes are their Identity. Are all of those things connected somehow or are they different forms of Identity? Brandon Sanderson They are connected, although the Parshendi losing their identity is a little more metaphorical. But yeah, the idea of these things-- Identity is an innate attribute in the cosmere that is related to your soul, your spirit, and it is one of the things that Hemalurgy can fiddle with and Feruchemy can fiddle with. It's kind of important to how the [Metallic] Arts play out, but it's important to all the magics... Identity is involved in why you can't use another person's metalminds, right, that kind of thing. And those are all related. The Parshendi is more metaphorical. Questioner I wondered because it's always capitalized, in the book. Brandon Sanderson Yep, and it's done intentionally. Peter always asks, "Are you sure this one is capitalized?" "Yeah." Orem signing (March 10, 2018)

She leaned back, pursing her lips. Perhaps it is possessions you wish, she said. Spheres, gemstones. Shards. A Blade that bleeds darkness and cannot be defeated. I can give it to you. i wouldn't go as far as to say that vyre's knife cannot be defeated. But we've seen almost nothing of it so idk

to add to what @RShara said, she only seems able to grant something physical or real. she doesnt handle abstractions very well. when Dalinar asked for forgiveness, the NW reacts oddly and doesnt even respond to that statement. she then continues to ask him if he wants possesions, like spheres, gemstones and even Nightblood.

Guessing Stormlight Book 5 title

halo6819 What planet did humans originate on? Or did they originate on Scadrial when Preservation and Ruin got together? Brandon Sanderson Humans did not originate on Scadrial, because they were on Yolen, which is a planet before Adonalsium-- the story that takes place before Adonalsium was Shattered. They may have been on other planets, but they-- the very first ones you would care about are probably on Yolen. Shadows of Self San Diego signing (Oct. 8, 2015) Brandon Sanderson Alethi use the word "soil" on occasion in their language to mean "dirtied" or similar. It's a holdover from an earlier time. But they don't associate it with the ground, and if you see it used instead of stone like in this quote, it should indeed raise an eyebrow. Argent Sooo... I mean, my eyebrow was already raised. Let's not bait the RAFO too hard, and drop the worldhopper part - is there more to this particular ardent than meets the eye? Wait, hold up. How can "soil" be a holdover from an earlier time if Roshar was always a rocky place? Or did you mean that it's one of those words that carried over from Yolish, or whatever other language people spoke before they migrated to Roshar (like "hound")? Brandon Sanderson It is similar to hound, which is one of the ones that Hoid pointed out as an oddity. But people did not migrate from Yolen to Roshar. Roshar was inhabited before the shattering of Adonalsium. Stormlight Three Update #4 (Oct. 3, 2016) HorseCannon I didn't realize Horneaters had parshmen blood, didn't even realize that was possible. How closely are humans and parshmen related, do they have a common ancestor? Or is one an artificially created version of the other? Brandon Sanderson There was intermixing long ago. Horneaters and Herdazians are both a result. (Signs of this are the stone carapace on Herdazian fingernails and the Horneater extra jaw pieces--in the back of the mouth--for breaking shells.) Humans and parshmen don't have a common ancestor. And as a side note, both of these strains of humanoids predate the ascension of Honor, Cultivation, and Odium. ccstat Are there Aimian-Human hybrids as well? (Either type of Aimian) If so, are the Thaylen people one of these? Brandon Sanderson RAFO. Blightsong *via private message* Some of us believe that you are saying that humans and listeners existed pre-Shattering while some of us believe that you are saying that Horneaters and Herdazians existed pre-Shattering (you have mentioned that humans had been on Roshar since before the Shattering recently). What were you trying to say here? Brandon Sanderson Humans (other than those on Yolen) existed pre-Shattering, as did parshmen. Footnote: Blightsong's parenthetical statement is mistaken; there is no source claiming that humans had been on Roshar since before the Shattering. General Reddit 2015 (Nov. 16, 2015)

Adon crafted the Roshar system for a specific purpose. Spren and singers existed pre-shattering on Roshar. I don't see why humans couldn't exist on Ashyn too Brandon specifically said not all humans originate from Yolen. Just that the first one were there. So that means he made humans on Yolen first. Then other planets

I just found the WoB It wasnt culture but the Identity part was right Questioner In terms of discussing Identity, I know that in Emperor's Soul, they talk about Identity, and the Parshendi talk about losing their Identity, and then I was just rereading Bands of Mourning, and one of the kandra talks about how the spikes are their Identity. Adon created them on other planets, such as Ashyn Finallity (paraphrased) We've seen a number of human/singer hybrids (Unkalaki and Herdazians) and even human/Aimian hybrids (Natans). How is such a thing possible biologically or is there some outside influence there? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) He said that they (humans and parshendi/aimians) can interbreed because they were made by the same person, or rather that they were made with the same intent, that they were made that way on purpose. They don't have a common heritage or anything though. English Reading Series at BYU 2018 (Feb. 23, 2018) Human and singers and interbreed because Adon created them both. " His Shattering would have had an effect on them , like the parshmen at the end of the false desolation." we don't know this. We don't know the exact details of what happened to the Parsh, and to say the same thing would happen to human after the shattering is pure speculation The Parsh were connected to BAM to get forms of power which humans can't do. I think the Connection would be different. Their lack of Connection just took away their ability to change forms. it would certainly have an effect, I agree, but I don't think it would be as bad as you think

Limit on Savantism and Wax's Own Savantism
Eternal Khol replied to Karger's topic in Cosmere Discussion
She did speak of the "sun" in the CR. So I think it's safe to say she could peer into the CR Any Soulcaster, fabrial or not, can see into the CR -
Brandon said in a WoB that the Identity part of the Parshmen was really more of a culture type thing. It was pretty much just Connection they lost. There's a simple explanation for this. Different things evolve at different rates. Maybe life didnt appear on some Planets till later. Not all humans originate from Yolen. Even if they did that doesn't mean that they'd have to be in the medieval era. Adon made humans on Ashyn that aren't from Yolen, he could a done the same with Sel Which planet had 10000 years of peace? Zach G Dunno if you can answer this now, but if everyone is from Yolen way back when, is there a migration story? Brandon Sanderson Not all humans originated on Yolen, but the first humans were there. Watch the books for myths that hint at more. General Twitter 2016 (Jan. 3, 2016) There's a WoB that the Shattering meant everything and nothing to investiture.

i think Odium picking a champion just has to do with the fact that Odium doesn't want to open himself to a strike from Cultivation Stormfather states that "To fight directly might coax out forces that could hurt him, as he has been hurt before. Those scars do not heal. To pick a champion, then lose, will only cost him time. He has that in plenitude."
-
Ohhhhhhh. I get it now. I bet it does have to do with the mists. Being surrounded by Preservation's power and all, after so long of burning metals and using Preservation's power I'm sure the mists would have some passive effect's(seeing through the mists included)
-
Ohhh. . . Okay. Your were referring to era 2 the whole time, right? I'm very confused here. "I decided that Sazed would still send them. They're part of the nature of the world now. To acknowledge what had happened, they wouldn't come every night any longer. But they would come. They were changed in that they are no longer simply the raw power of Preservation; they're now a part of Harmony—so they no longer pull away from Hemalurgy in the same way as they used to. They still have the odd effect of being able to power Allomancy. (And Feruchemy as well—if one knows how to do it.) The mists are, in part, the raw power of creation. And when one is favored of Harmony, the mists have a greater effect than they might otherwise have. We'll see more of this later." So in Era 2, the mists can still power allomancy and if Harmony favors the person, theyll work better. So how do they draw upon them to begin with. Did Harmony change how it's works?
-
this was not in question You said you think of the mists as an amplifier for people already using allomancy. The fact that Vin uses the mists to power her allomancy shows it's not just a amplifier. Thats my point Or were you referring to how it interacts with Allomancer's when using allomancy normally?
-
1. Vin in HoA uses the mists to completely fuel her Allomancy. "When you burn most Allomantic metals, it opens a conduit through which you can draw upon Preservation's power and use it in very specific ways." metals allow you to access a specific form of the power. but what happens when you already have the power? you can use it how you want(at least in the form of Allomancy) 2.now that Harmony is in control, the mists no longer pull away from Hemalurgy, so i bet its possible. but the mists are far less common in Era 2, so that ability might not be that useful
-
that's what i was thinking, but maybe not. the breath might replace the memories bestowed from the spike. breath is almost entirely in the Physical Realm and Hemalurgy is almost entirely Spirtual. so maybe when you give them the spike, it WOULD grant their memories back, but then the Breath might do something akin to Vasher's Memory erase technique
-
Took me a sec, but yeah.
-
Is this the one you're referring too? The top half with the orb is symmetrical which makes me think of the Shattered Plains with the Oathgate in the middle.

Nicrosil metalminds (possible spoilers for mistborn era 2)
Eternal Khol replied to ToaCalune's topic in Mistborn
For all intents and purposes they'd be dead. Deader than dead. A spiritweb, cognitive and physical aspect are all intertwined. If you take away two thirds of the equation, what are you left with? -
Nicrosil metalminds (possible spoilers for mistborn era 2)
Eternal Khol replied to ToaCalune's topic in Mistborn
Ahh.... Touche If you were to store an entire spiritweb, the objects cognitive and physical presence would most likely disappear entirely. You'd probably have to "make" new ones for the spiritweb you have stored On a side note, I wonder if you could bind a Cognitive Shadow to an object so as to circumvent the problem of CS's not being able to leave their planet. They'd be bound to the object instead of the Planet or whatever -
Are the worlds in the Cosmere globes?
Eternal Khol replied to FantasyFanatic's question in Cosmere Q&A
There's still life on the surface of Ashyn. well, its hinted at by Khriss.
