"What do you mean 'you too'? It's the truth!" Subversion snapped. "You think that whatever reality warping took place could affect a Narrator like me?" The rabbit raised its nose into the air, sniffing tentatively. The wind wasn't speaking to the soulless one anymore. It was time to strike while he was distracted by his screens. And yet... Something deep within the rabbit's ravenous soul stirred. It had been awakened by the taste of a Narrator's blood, and now... That name. the rabbit thought. the Witherlord can return? The Dreamsmith nodded, taking a careful look at Rebus's soul. "I'm afraid you'll have to wait a moment before I can begin. My Author is in typing this up on a five-minute class break. But the weapon I have in mind for you should be able to be in two places at once." "Done!" Malevolence said, standing eagerly. "I will spread my evil influence to the ends of the earth."- 111831 replies

Here you go The Dreamsmith decides to assume for now the Emperor's assent. "I shall now make you your weapon." The Dreamsmith says. "If you are not content with it, then I shall see if I can modify it to your liking." Then he picks up his hammer and begins to work. Three things every Blade needs: Power, Form, and Name. The Power for this Blade the Dreamsmith draws forth from the Emperor in a line of pure light. Deeply he draws upon the Emperor's soul, for great is the power of those within the Maelstrom. Wincing at the necessity, the Dreamsmith lays the power upon his anvil and splits it in two, leaving a strand of connection between the uneven pieces. For the form, the Dreamsmith thinks deeply. Many forms could work adequately, but this Blade must be fit for an emperor, a ruler of people. So he takes the greater piece and strikes it again and again until it is shaped as is necessary. A jagged crown of light, likely to impale anyone who touches it. The Dreamsmith sets this crown aside and places the lesser piece on his anvil. Hammer moving deftly, he forms the lesser portion of power into a fierce spear that glows with the light of Narration and of the Emperor's gods. The connection remains between this spear of light and the twisted crown. The name for this Blade is clear to the Dreamsmith. As the Blade is two parts, so it shall have two names. "This Blade I give to you is called thusly." He lifts the Spear, handing it to the Emperor. "Victory, for what it shall bring." He hefted the crown, but hesitated to place it upon the Emperor's head. "Victory comes through Sacrifice, and that is what this crown shall bring you. This Blade shall allow you to imprison the demons of the Maelstrom forever, not within another plane but within your own soul. Victory shall draw them in, and Sacrifice shall contain them. So long as you live, so long as you remain steadfast in faith to your gods, they will not break free. I warn you though, this will not come without pain." He held up the crown, the emberlike glow of his eyes dim and soft. "Do you accept this Blade, this burden? It is the best I can think to offer you, but I shall forge another if you wish it.”- 111831 replies

"It is a most helpful attribute." Malevolence replied. "Is there anything else you wish to teach me? Or perhaps you need my help in your plan? If not, I believe I will prepare to make another attempt too kill Cricket and his companions." Moni's muttering trailed off into incoherence. she cradled the hand that held Endings to her chest, fingers white on the handle. The Dreamsmith furrows his brow. "I could. But I think that if you wish to master your negative traits, you should do so yourself." He turns to his forge. "Any more questions? If not, I shall begin." This was fortunate for the rabbit. It crept closer to the wind and the clone, wondering why anyone would want to find paper. You couldn't eat paper. That name though... the name they'd spoken of. The Witherlord. The rabbit knew that name. And so it waited, and watched very carefully. -- The Dreamsmith decides to assume for now the Emperor's assent. "I shall now make you your weapon." The Dreamsmith says. "Dying." Moni whispered again. "Never ag-again. I'll kill you first. You won't kill me again." Her right hand gripped Endings tightly, and her eyes stared straight through Perseus and Faunus. "Perseus?" Palsu called. "They're getting closer." "Good." Malevolence said, taking a large gulp of the liquid. "I-it, I..." Moni shook her head convulsively. "Dying." She said softly, distant. "I'm dying." Malevolence inspected the glass suspiciously. "I suppose... I would use it to dominate the Thread! Palsu nodded, dropping the rock and standing slowly. His hands, face, and shirt were covered in red blood, and his eyes were dark. Moni lay against the wall, breath coming in gasps, hands clenched into fists, eyes moving erratically.- 111831 replies

The Faceless's laugh cut off, and it grunts in pain. "Well." It said with blood leaking from its lips. "Thanks for the weapon. I will enjoy killing you all with it." It smile returned, form melting into liquid as it... utterly failed to break free of the ropes, which glowed with a faint blue light as it struggled to shapeshift around them. The real Moni snorted softly as the creature reformed into her shape, now looking genuinely fearful. "Er, surely we can come to some agreement!" It said desperately. "I don't-I didn't kill his friends, I swear!" Palsu stepped forward angrily at this. "Yes you did! You were gloating at first, but now that you realize you can't escape, you'll say anything to stay alive." The Faceless's eyes, wide with fear, spun towards Palsu. "I-no, wait! You don't understand, he is the Faceless!" It cried desperately. Palsu's eyes widened with rage "I-I'm a Faceless? How dare you!" He stormed towards the Faceless. "Faceless killed my friends! You killed my friends!" He shouted. Then he scooped a rock off the ground and slammed it into the Faceless's skull with an audible *crack*. "And you'll never-*smack*-hurt-*crack*-ANYONE-*crack*-AGAIN!" The blood of the Faceless pooled around Palsu as he stared, wild-eyed and breathing in gasps, at the ruin of the dead creature's skull. Behind him, Moni collapsed against a wall, face white as a sheet. "Of course. A weapon to cause Plot and protect you from conflict. And a weapon to suit your personality as a Narrator and scientist. I can forge this for you." He smiled. "And I know just what form would suit such a weapon." "I think that my definition still stands, although I would say revise it to say that power is the ability to achieve goals, in general, not your goals specifically." Malevolence said thoughtfully. "That millionaire might have enough power for his ambition, but he is still weaker than the ruler of a planet even if he is happier than that man." He thought on what he'd said for a moment. "This is another aspect of evil. To never be satisfied with what you have. To always stretch to the limits of your power and beyond to reach higher and higher heights, until finally there must be no higher heights to reach." Subversion glanced up. "Hey! Don't go wipe her memory. 655 is real. Or at least he was at one point. Moniker met him once or twice." "Perhaps you remember me from the time I attempted to *ahem* encourage Shoe and Beosta to marry quickly in order to avoid future heartbreak." The Priest frowned briefly, but then his bright smile returned. "Or perhaps not. Anyways, I must be off! There's a wedding today, and I don't mean to miss it!" He hurried off, carrying his massive book along with him. A rabbit watched the wind speak to the Narrator with no soul, its ears perked. The words of their conversation sparked something within the rabbit, something besides its eternal hunger. Perhaps it should wait to eat the soulless one until the wind had finished speaking. Haven't been on the shard all day, sorry.- 111831 replies

"Hm." Malevolence considered this for a good long while. "I think it is measured by the ease with which one can achieve their goals. Or perhaps whether they can achieve their goals when those goals are in conflict with another's." "They know." The Faceless said quickly. "They discovered him, though only after suffering a great defeat that left many of them dead. They think they killed him, and perhaps they have. Although as some know, we Faceless are not easy to kill." Her smile widened, and Palsu cowered back further. "Regardless of the truth, to them it appeared that he died swearing that you were dead. That Surtur had slain you for good, and sent Odysseus to clean up your leftover forces. I rather think they believe him."- 111831 replies

"Me?" The Faceless Moni laughed harder. "I did nothing. I am merely an ordinary Faceless. Good for little more than preying on the odd innocent traveler and their companions." She grinned at Palsu, causing him to stumble back in fear. "No, it was not I who caused havoc among the Skavi resistance. It was not I who impersonated you and led the fools who trust you to slaughter. That task was given to the greatest of us, Odysseus the False, servant of Surtur." "You wish a tool to cause conflict? The Dreamsmith pulls a four-pointed medallion out of the chest. "Here is your answer. while 'Balancium' is not the proper name, it is possible to unify the four substances. This medallion is a converter, made by the Narrator Nameless shortly before his failed attempt to slay the Witherlord. The Luxite in it was a gift from beings known as the Skeins, a leftover remnant from the time of the Luxsprites." The Dreamsmith sighed, staring at the medallion. "Though Nameless was a Narrator of many faults, I can hardly critique his craftsmanship. He could have been a great smith in his life if he'd bothered to learn." He tossed the medallion to Rebus. "It is very, very near to impossible to combine the four elements in any substantial way. And as you saw in the trial, experimenting with them can lead to extremely explosive results. But nearly impossible is not impossible. Now, what would you like me to forge for you?" "Thank you." Says Palsu, but his eyes remain fixed on the Faceless.- 111831 replies

The fake Moni immediately turns to stare at Palsu. "So," She says. "This is where you're hiding." Palsu paled. "I... I'm not hiding. Just travelling with them. They said they can protect me!" He looked at Kion and Moni. "You can protect me, right?" @Ookla the Irreplaceable Perseus might want to wake up for this. "I love power, and the power of knowledge and technology above all other powers. I love being evil" Malevolence paused. "Hate... I hate being weak. I hate knowing that there are gaps in my knowledge that could prove fatal." He frowned. "I hate... many other things, I am sure. I just can't think of them right now." "I believe you want two things right now: Knowledge, and a Blade." The Dreamsmith says as he rummages through an old chest to the side of his workshop. "You came here for a weapon, and your scientific mind must burn with the desire to know whether combining the four fundamental elements is possible. I can give both of these things to you. Which do you want first?" Subversion flipped her hair angrily. "Whatever. They'd better hurry up." There once was a man named Hero. These are the tales of his life. The first of these tales is that of the day his life began. Unlike many men, Hero was not given life on the day of his birth. No, he was truly born on a different day, a day of magic and power that will be remembered unto the end of times. On that day, the day that the one who would determine the fate of the world and perhaps the universe itself was born, the day that would be mythologized a hundred thousand times, the day that one day every soul on the planet would come to know, that day when evil's bane was born, on that most incredible day the man who would be Hero hid trembling under a wagon as men died around him. "Could you perhaps tell us the Dreamsmith's exact wording, or at least as close to it as you can remember?" There was a slight commotion going on a the Council's table. Several of them were whispering to each other, and the Brave Adventurer was polishing his pocket watch with a nervous air. The Priest popped out of the straw beside Bacon, Cricket, Bat, Tam, and Mark. He looked decidedly chipper, standing with enthusiasm and brushing his robes clean. "Bacon, good to see you! "I see that I have much to learn." Malevolence bowed to his new master. "I am at your command. Teach me the ways of evil." "The resemblance is uncanny." Moni said. She stood from tying a complex knot around the supposed Faceless's feet. "Why don't you let it go? Should be tied up well enough." The Dreamsmith waves a dismissive hand. "All easy to come by, all useless to you. Welcome Rebus." He stood up from his forge and extended a hand. "Thank you for what you said to Omen. I have been worried about him recently. He grows sullen. Perhaps what you have done will help him." "Very well, I shall inquire with Mother Entreri as to whether I may speak to him." The Priest hurried off to do so. Subversion groaned loudly. "But it's been at least twenty pages since I've been waiting here. Why can't they just hurry on with it? At this rate, I'm going to have to start my book." -- "Well?" "Thank you." Malevolen-er, not-Malevolence said. "What can you teach me of evil? I wish to understand everything about it, to discover every secret of the universe and use them all for myself." "Indeed it is. A very happy occasion." "Ah! Congratulations. I am happy to be able to officiate your ceremony." The Priest looks around the room. "Where is the groom? I'd like to congratulate him as well." Subversion shook her head. "No, no. I said you could pick the name. If you think 'Hero' is a good name, then that's the name he'll be stuck with." She frowned. "I wonder what's keeping those Enullers? I would've thought they'd have somebody ready to train with me by now." "Outsourcing... that is a good idea. I shall look into this." He nodded. "Regardless, your trial is over. Its point was to teach you of the dangers that come with tinkering with the fundamental forces of TLT, and to see how you would react in the face of utter disaster. Your quick thinking to prevent the withergeists from finding their way into reality has proven you worthy to see the Dreamsmith." Mist surrounded Rebus, and when it cleared he found himself standing in the Dreamsmith's forge.- 111831 replies

The Priest stiffened. "The date is set for tomorrow. In the field outside of the inn. All are welcome, so long as they bring a gift for the bride and groom." Omen swirled. "I see. You think my trials too boring... well, I have been concerned with my trial-giving capabilities. I don't feel that I'm giving it enough thought. But with so many seeking the Dreamsmith, how is one trial-giver to have time to come up with good trials?" "I am not entirely sure, all I have is their names, and a letter asking for a priest." The priest spun around as if he had eyes in the back of his head, narrowing his eyes at Tam. "I say. Do I not know you?" "Evil... it is a very general word. Some say that it is subjective, but I find that ridiculous!" The not-Malevolence pounded his fist on the table for emphasis. "I say that if some think what you are doing is good, then you're not doing evil well enough!" He said, clearly satisfied with his answer. "True evil is about helping yourself while ensuring that all suffer as much as possible because of it." The withergiests, fooled by his clever light trick, do not follow Rebus into the rift. It remains open, however. A place where, eventually, darkness would find and sneak through to plague the universe.- 111831 replies
