Ayyyy! Happy Fourth! The following is a transcription of the Declaration of Independence.
SpoilerThe unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

I love democracy as well but...I think it's gone from Patriarchy to straight sexism. And the racism part? They're both really bad, but the police haven't been "subduing" women's rights protests as much as BLM. Welcome to America, land of hypocrisy.In other words, fix the storming country folks. And don't storm the capital.

Well patriarchy and sexism are very very similar. I guess you could say patriarchy would be kind of a sub-set of sexism. It's definitely less of an issue now than it used to be, but we're much more... I guess aware of it now. (I'm not saying we weren't in the past. Things like feminism are just more wide-spread and socially acceptable now.) And I think that the BLM protests have been handled more aggressively because they are more likely to become violent due, in part, to the very political nature of them. In all honesty I've hardly heard anything about feminist protests in a while. I might just be under a rock, though.Anyways, we should probably stop talking about this before a mod gets after us for talking politics.

I was just looking at Chaos’ page and saw the status update Fadran posted there, and when Chaos replied to your comment, I just thought that him saying “Frustration, you have a tendency to not respond to my PMs, so I'm not really sure what you're referring to there.” was hilarious. Ghosting is the head admin doesn’t seem like a good idea.

I think I’ve been there, but it’s been a while -
I understand how horrifying and scarring that would be. I also would like to say, that just as you said at the beginning that it is me speaking from personal experience, this is also your personal experience. Everyone is different, but I am appalled that someone would be that blatantly rude and think themselves better than you in such a way. I guess each religion is different, and location does change the perception of people. Where I live, I’ve only ever known 1 person to be like that, riding religion like it is the only moral code in the world and if you don’t follow them precisely then you will be cursed for eternity. Everyone else I have known is either very accepting and open to other beliefs, or at least has enough tact to remain a kind and friendly person to you. I am sorry for what has been done to you, and I understand what you are saying, and I do agree that, in situations like that, religion could push people away instead of bringing them closer. My personal beliefs to all the stuff you listed above are like this. I believe that God gave us eternal identities that are either male or female, so I’m not LGBTQ+ or anything like that, but I support you if you are. I will be a supportive friend and stay connected with you. I’m not going to go to rallies and promote it in people, but I’m not going to put you down or belittle you. If you do drugs, I will try to help you move away from that because it is harmful to your body and can become addictive, but I’m not going to cast you to the wolves. Sex outside of marriage? I personally am not going to, but if you do then I can’t judge you for that. God gave us agency, the power to choose for ourselves. Depending on your personality I may spend less time with you and not go with you into certain situations, but only because I know about people who had similar values as I do, but they got tempted and succumbed when placed in the right circumstances. These are the values that I operate under, but I understand how interacting with religious people that hold different values would be demeaning and lead to strong feelings against religion

After the attempt, I think Bridge Four would have accepted him back. After the actual assassination I agree that they wouldn’t have accepted him back, both out of anger and because he had actually broken the law. Though, because of their ideals and personalities I think that if Moash was given a proper sentencing for breaking the law, and he could somehow prove actual remorse, they might take him back. Moash didn’t properly use his support group (Bridge Four). A support group can only help you if they know what you are going through. Moash only told Kaladin what happened to him, so nobody else could help him.

Moash had Bridge Four, possibly the most supportive, friendly, and yet broken group on Roshar.

Hasn’t Dalinar proven that you can choose to get rid of Odiums influence? Even if you make the argument that Odium met Moash at a weak point, and Moash wasn’t able to get free while under control, he could have chosen to break free of Odium while his influence was pushed away due to the Tower being activated

When you were a kid, did you ever sneak candy or something like that? You knew it was wrong, but the only reason you felt bad was because you knew it was wrong. You didn’t actually feel remorse or a desire to do better and make things right.

I consider those to be more of cults, though the Aztecs and Mayans did have actual religion which called for human sacrifice.

I would first like to say, I understand where you are coming from and why you believe this. I don’t think that someone loving God, and you not, can destroy a relationship. I’ve heard people say this before, but I actually think that any relationship with God involved is an equilateral triangle. If you get closer to God, then you must also get closer to your significant other. Yes, religion has been used by humans to justify their wrong doings. So has science and innovation. I think that most often when religion is used to justify wrongdoing, it is when you focus on a single part of doctrine or when you think that you are better than everyone else. As long as people think about the whole picture and remember that everyone is equal, people don’t die (I think. I haven’t majored in history, so this is just my rudimentary knowledge).

This was a conversation involving Kaladin and Shallan while trapped in the chasms in Words of Radiance. People take things personally. It is human nature, someone says something as a joke, and another person gets grievously offended. But it’s alright, isn’t it? Everyone does it to each other, so they will get over it. Wrong. I will give an example from my life. I and my friend (name changed) John have amazing banter. We undermine each other, give quippy remarks, and put in a show for anyone who cares enough to pay attention. We don’t try to draw attention to ourselves, and we really don’t, it’s just the way we act around each other. Like many people these days, the playful banter between friends is often more insulting and demeaning than it is friendly. But I had assumed that because he did it back to me, it must be fine. I wanted to let him enjoy the conversation, even if it shredded my happiness. I recently was talking to him, and to my surprise, he hated it to but kept doing it, because he thought the same thing I did. Now, this is just one example of people putting on a brave face but actually hating it. My whole reason for writing all this is to try and plead that people be kind. It doesn’t hurt anyone to be kind. If you think that your friends won’t like you if you are kind, then get new friends. The LDS church has said something similar in their “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet. I can speak from personal experience. Failure (and appendicitis) feels like a knife in the gut. When someone points out failures and shortcomings, it is like that knife is being twisted around. I desperately implore that you do your best to be kind in all instances. Don’t insult people, even in jest. I hate it when people say stuff like this, but in a world where you can be anything, be kind. Edit: This ended up not being focused around Stormlight Archive. It started when I was rereading WoR, and I used that quote, but it kinda became something else. If any staff think this needs to be moved, feel free to do so
