  1. I can't wait to get me an ice vulpix. I really like the idea of the alola forms.
  2. Absolutely. We have always striven to promote open discussion and acceptance of all viewpoints on this forum, and have generally tried to cultivate a friendly atmosphere. We always want people to feel like they can approach the whole moderation staff with anything they need. Note, however, that when it comes to small stuff, each individual moderator is left to their own devices and judgement. We aren't convening a secret cabal to discuss every report/issue brought up to the staff. As such, in general, a view expressed by any given moderator is their own and doesn't necessarily represent the staff as a whole. If you ever feel that you or anyone else are being treated unfairly or attacked, even by a member of the staff, please bring it to our attention, and we will generally do our best to resolve/diffuse the situation if we feel it is warranted.
  3. Yes, this is basically the point of the different mods on the forums. We aren't here to strictly punish, but to keep things level and on topic, and at times help facilitate discussion. We commonly get "reports" for many issues, not just ones requiring corrective action (help with editing/deleting your own posts, spam, questions raised by people too afraid/shy to ask in the open, rules clarifications, etc.), and we encourage this. A report doesn't necessarily mean "punish this person", and not every report asking for corrective action gets acted upon. The only time we step in is if we feel it's warranted, and sometimes whether it's warranted or not is discussed among ourselves first. In short, if anyone feels the need to reach out to a moderator for any reason, regardless of if you feel attacked, are unsure of board features, feel someone is acting inappropriate, getting a topic back on track, or just have a simple question, we encourage that. As for the topic at hand, I have to agree with Kurk here. While a good majority of the post in question is good critique, some of it comes off as (or can be interpreted as) pretty aggressive. I'm 100% certain that @neongrey's intention was NOT inflammatory, and was intended to be helpful and constructive, i would at least have to ask to dial back the tone a bit. You can point out the problems/flaws (and stress their importance) in someone's work without making assumptions about the writer's character/ability. @neongrey If you wish to discuss the specifics of why i personally feel this way on the topic (we're all people here, and even mods such as myself and kurk can misinterpret things), you can feel free to PM me if you want to talk in a more private setting, and I'm sure @Kurkistan(who stepped in first) would probably be open to such a discussion as well. That said, i personally see no more "corrective action" needed here than "tone it down, please", as a flame war has not exactly erupted or anything.
  4. Yep, hiding is also an option. That said, if it's just a double post, the mods aren't likely to mind actually removing it for you, so reporting is just fine.
  5. I gotcha covered, homeslice! Removed the dupe. next time, you will probably get a quicker response if you "report" the duplicate. Note that "reporting" a post doesn't automatically mean you're in trouble, all it does it put it in an administration queue for the mods to look at, and you're able to put in comments on why you're reporting it. it's not uncommon to get a "oops, i made a duplicate, please delete" report.
  6. FYI, dodging is really important. Not necessarily dodging regular attacks, but if you dodge their special attacks, it makes a pretty big difference. Whenever you see "So-and-so used <move>!" you should begin swiping like a madman. I've taken down a number of gyms with pokemon far below the level of the defending pokemon. That said, CP really stops mattering to an extent after about 600~700 or so. if you're under 500 you will probably have issues taking things down, but once you get to around 700~ish it's pretty easy to take out just about anything. I took out several gyms with things around 1100~1700 with just a few 700's. As far as typing and stuff goes, the typings actually don't matter as much as they do in normal pokemon games. Type advantage = 1.25x damage, and disadvantage = .8x damage. This is a far cry from the original double/quadruple or half/quarter in normal pokemon games. It's actually entirely possible to deal more damage not-very-effective move than a super effective move with certain pokemon/attacks because their attack attack speed and such can make up for it. Mud slap and water gun are two examples of good moves that attack particularly fast and can fairly often be preferable to a super-effective move. also: team yellow for the win!
  7. Welcome cookies have been around for a long time! That said: } catch (HelloWorldException e) { e.setStackTrace("Welcome to the forum!"); throw new WelcomeException(e); }
  8. Clearly you were fated to have this signature. Do not fight against your destiny, young one.
  9. I hate it. It's garbage. Change it back. Change is bad. This is terrible. *rage quit* Kidding, i actually love it. I think it looks great, nice work chaos!
  10. Yeah, the new design is SO 2015. Stop living in the past, chaos.
  11. most likely it gets pinned to and prominently displayed along side each of your posts to publicly display your shame to all who visit. (I have no idea)
  12. Seriously though, finally! It's gonna be good!
  13. FYI I Merged the three similar threads all about this into one.
  14. If you go to https://aboutme.google.com/you willl see all the personal info on your account that people can see when they look you up/you put them in your circles or whatever. You can also go through their 'privacy check up' to look through everything that's available on you: https://myaccount.google.com/privacycheckup/1 Of probable interest to you will be in section 2 "Help people connect with you". This drives the phone number to google account interaction. Simply put, if someone has your phone number, and they try to contact you through a google service, it will auto-resolve the contact information to you. It won't go the other way around. You can turn this on or off. So, for example, let's say your phone number is 555-555-5555. If you give me this number, but not your name or anything, and this number is tied to your google account, if i try to contact you through google voice/hangouts dialing, it will auto resolve to Quiver (or rather, your google account info name) The google hangouts app is actually super awesome. If you tie your number in to google voice, you can use it to dial out on any device you can access hangouts on. For example, i can dial with my personal number out from any PC, my phone, my tablet, or many other devices. To the other person, it comes up just like a normal phone call. There is also, of course, the video/voice chat that gtalk uses, but that's a separate thing, but tied in to hangouts as well.
  15. It's easier from the moderator perspective, because if you report 5 posts by one user, we get 5 reports we need to look into to make sure we took care of all of it. If people report the user directly, it rolls all of those reports into one single report we need to look into to ban. Basically it's easier to manage and less chance of overlooking a spammer.
  16. What specifically we're changing/implementing from the new version is a question above my head. That said, in the short term, i would probably expect at least the UI to look a bit different, maybe some options and things swapped around. We might see more features implemented/used as time goes on, pending on chaos' whim.
  17. I believe we would be upgrading from IPB 3.x to 4.x, which is basically going to be anything added in the newer version. https://www.invisionpower.com/features/apps
  18. Yeah, we do have a few coders on staff (myself and joe are coders professionally. Not for IPB, but still), that said, we've always strove to limit any customization as much as possible just to avoid issues with upgrading, which is the main reason for not implementing something to that effect.
  19. You're right. We should probably get one of those....i put forth this candidate.
  20. This right here is an important distinction. Reddit (and imgur and things like it) are build on the idea of gamification, which is basically what you described here. Submitting the most witty, valuable, insightful, etc. discussions to a subreddit gets the most discussion, attention, and the most points. However, 17th shard is a forum. It works like traditional BBS style forums. Posts are seen based on age of interaction vs community merit.
  21. This is already in the works. I would expect something soon (actual soon, not "17th shard chaos-speak soon")
  22. I propose a rep system that requires a user to file, in triplicate, the proper documentation for "intentions to award and up/down vote" for every vote. These documents will then be forwarded to the 17th shard offices, misplaced, refaxed, digitized, filed away, forgotten, referenced in the future in a bulk votes submission, and finally buried in an undisclosed location. The lead time for submitting a document is 6 months. We can all only dream of such a perfect world, though...
  23. So people who've been around for a while might (or probably not) remember that about this time every year I participate in Ludum Dare, and indie game making competition. Well, I just completed my entry for this year! And here it is!
  24. Official length is "until we get bored of it". Which is generally about a week or so.
