  1. I like how, coming in and reading this after he changed himself back, kobold is on his own list of subjects for someone else. Makes it way more hilarious.
  2. Posted a 2015 intro topic for those unfamiliar with our ways! Have a happy ookla the mokovial/turkey day, everyone!
  3. Hello, all! By now I'm sure some of our more perceptive users (and probably anyone with eyes) and are new around here might be asking themselves "What's with all these ookla names?" Long story short, it's a holiday tradition around here to rename yourself "ookla the ____" in honor of none other than Brandon's assistant Peter Ahlstrom we like to call 'Ookla the Mokovial' (or at least i do). This holiday was founded when Peter decided to drop his previous moniker of "Ookla the Mok" that he used way back in the day on the timewaster's guide forums, for the more sensible (and boring) approach of using his real name! A few people around here found that to be unfortunate, and in response, we decide once a year, we should all rename ourselves in commemoration. This holiday coincides with peter's birthday (November 26th), but a few members have decided to start early (no big deal! as of writing this, november 26th is a few hours away by the mountain time zone peter resides in, thus me making the topic a bit early!). The holiday usually runs about a week or so, but generally goes "until we get bored of it". Members usually have fun trying to guess who's who in light of changed around profiles, and such a thread is already running! So anyone new to the tradition: you now know what's up, so get creative with those names and have some fun! Enjoy, guys! --Jiverongal
  4. Starts on Peter's birthday, which is the 26th, and coincidentally thanksgiving this year.
  5. I personally have never looked into it, just heard about it, but it seems like it would be perfect and fix a lot of the issues of "everyone watch this movie at the same time!" brings with it
  6. There's a chat service called like "rabbit" or something like that which lets you stream netflix, youtube, and probably others in a communal chat room of up to like 10 people. That would take care of any regional issues
  7. Don't worry, folks! Ookla the mokovial IS right around the corner, and I'm sure we'll be celebrating it around here like we always do!
  8. He OBVIOUSLY meant "the important one"! (i kid!) as for chaos.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2bo_u_YmW8
  9. The end times are now, people. Say your prayers for we shall all be gone tomorrow....
  10. But, no, really, this is actually really awesome news.
  11. Welcome back! Has it been 2 years already? how was your mission? Feel free to take the reference as either the religious-type 'mission' it actually was, or as a 'secret agent' style mission.
  12. Don't worry, people, we all know chaos loves my witty antics and otherwordly charisma way too much, and would never ban eero. You can rest assured that he will survive this day.
  13. Billionaire playboy, obviously. If that's not an option, I'm generally happy working in a job that lets me live comfortably, which I currently have. As long as I'm working with computers, i can be pretty happy at my job. Obviously, though, if i was offered any sort of childhood dream job (astronaut, cowboy, astronaut-cowboy, etc.) i'd totally jump at it.
  14. You heard it here first, people. Typos wither away at chaos' soul and ravage his body. Show him no quarter.
  15. Yeah, but you can't REALLY consider that a "progressive" move, IMO, since the only reason she was female in the first place was because at the last minute the designers thought it would be fun to surprise the players with a big reveal at the end that she was actually female.
  16. Not that i'm necessarily disagreeing with what you say, feather, but I have seen this idea thrown around a LOT in recent years, and i find the idea of thinking that comic book males = male power fantasy and comic book females = sexualized fantasy is quite incorrect. Males in comic books are sexualized to a similar extent as females, in regards to body types. Clothing wise, women are way more over sexualized, and situationally things may be different. Before anyone goes running for the downvote button, I do recognize that comic books are totally trying to sell themselves to a predominately male fanbase, which is likely the basis for the oversexualization of women, and comic books are probably MUCH more inviting to your typical male than female. So i'm not necessarily on the other side of the fence here, I just disagree heavily with this one argument, and i feel its a terrible argument for this cause. Why you may ask do I feel this is a terrible argument? Well, if the way the majority of male comic book heroes are portrayed is "male power fantasy" and not "over sexualization of men" (which people usually say its absolutely not with this argument), then i find it weird how romance novels, which almost exclusively are targeted at women and not meant as a "male power fantasy" in any way, contain so much male power fantasy instead of, ya know, oversexualized men. Overly muscley men in tight spandex is absolutely over sexualization of the male form, on the same level as is thin waist-ed, big breasted women in spandex.
  17. Actually, according to symantec's annual reports on malware, there's been a pretty huge shift in platform independent malware in the past few years. They've begun taking advantage of the fact that people are using the same software/browers/etc. on different OS's and are coding their malware to handle any OS. Stuff that runs on a similar/common code base (chrome, firefox, java, flash, etc.) that you can run on different OS's will usually carry with it the same vulnerabilities, and/or will forward to an OS specific version of their exploit. This has been a particularly popular trend among ransomware. This practice is expected to increase in the coming years because it's been particularly effective/lucrative for malware writers.
  18. I would like to report the previous poster to the high council for an immediate ban on the grounds of double posting, a clear rules violation. :3
  19. svchost is a generic program windows uses to host various services. It shouldn't really have much/anything to do with the upgrade process. That said, microsoft is rolling out the update based on your hardware configuration. They're waiting until there's "ample support" for your particular hardware setup before the update gets pushed out to you. By now, your PC has probably already downloaded the update and is just waiting for MS to tell it to go ahead (assuming you have the "get windows 10 app" in your system tray). If you check your C: drive, and set it to show hidden folders, you should see a folder named "$windows.~BT", that's the actual install files for W10. I'm in the same boat where i haven't had the go ahead pushed out to me yet for update. It's possible to do some manual stuff to get it to update, most likely, but I couldn't tell you what to do off hand.
  20. I can actually shed some light on that. Windows 9 was intentionally avoided for two reasons. The first one is to distance themselves from windows 8, which was not particularly well received (this is the lesser of the two reasons). The second reason is much more technical, and has to do with programming. Within the windows API (essentially, MS's framework for programmers to interact with windows) they have a call you can do to get the version of windows you are using. This returns a plain text name with something along the lines of "windows 95", "windows NT", or "windows xp". Which is all well and good, but the problem is 3rd party application developers. Back in the day, for compatability purposes, it was VERY common to look for windows OS's that START WITH "windows 9" in your code in order to catch both windows 95 and windows 98, because they were basically the same thing from a coding perspective. Therefore, there are TONS of applications out there that use this as a work around instead of checking for both windows 95 and windows 98 respectively when they're checking for the version of windows they're running on. If MS were to release an OS named windows 9, it would break all of this old code, and maintaining compatability is one thing MS tries VERY hard to do. You can actually go out to code repositories and find code that has this problem, too. See here. There were even instances where java itself had spots with this sort of version checking in it, so that could potentially break java as a programming language on windows.
  21. Welcome to 17th shard, where the timelines are made up, and the points don't matter!
  22. Dag, passed up for a promotion again! (I kid, eero is much too lazy to take on more responsibility!) Also congrats to weiry and joe
  23. I've watched OtGW a few times, and its a great series. I highly recommend it. That said, I honestly think you're overanalyzing it. Escaping from the limbo they were in wasn't necessarily because they "defeated the beast". Instead, they didn't DIE because they didn't SUCCUMB to the beast. At least that's the way I always saw it. All the other people essentially consitute the quintessential "lost souls" stuck in a sort of purgatory, as evidenced by most of them being more old fashioned/old timey than the time setting of OtGW. The fact that succumbing to the beast = death and not defeating the beast = life is pretty apparent, i think, when you consider the lyrics to the song the beast can be heard singing in the distance throughout the series: Come wayward souls, Who wander through the darkness, There is a light for the lost and the meek. Sorrow and fear, are easily forgotten, when you submit to the soil of the earth. He's beckoning the inhabitants of purgatory to come to him for their final resting place, essentially. (Also, it's jason funderburker)
  24. If you're looking to get in to reading HP lovecraft works, I recommend looking into this series of paperbacks. They're usually pretty short and easy to digest, and it pulls works from lovecraft and his group of authors (the mythos was made by more than just lovecraft), and they're usually pretty good a cherry picking the good stories. That said, you can pick up a "complete" collection of HP lovecraft stories pretty easily. I've gotten this one from barnes and noble in store from the clearance section (in store) more than once, for under 5 bucks. Note that these are ONLY lovecraft's stories, so they're hardly the "complete" work of original mythos stories. It's worth noting that a lot of the writing in the original mythos stories can feel sort of "dated" at times. Their writing style often comes off to me as "old timey"
  25. I've never actually watched this show, but a few things i've heard about the previous season intrigued me. Mainly, I heard there were references to the king in yellow in season 1, which for those who don't know, is a big part of Cthulhu Mythos fiction. That said, I'm really not too much into murder mystery/detective/noir kinda stuff, so I've kinda been wanting to find out the answer to this. Specifically, is this actually a Cthulhu Mythos-based TV show in disguise? Has it slowly been delving into the occult, with stranger things happening as it progresses? Or is it pretty standard murder mystery fair? Because if it's the former, and it's slowly delving into Mythos occultism and getting more weird, it would totally fit along side normal mythos stuff (which usually starts off pretty mundane before sliding down a slippery slope into madness and the occult), and I need to get on watching this RIGHT NOW. If it's the latter, well....then....pass.
