  1. it applies to anyone. The rules usually alternate between using "he" and "she" in 3.5 so that one sex doesn't feel excluded
  2. Yeah, imaginary numbers are something you will learn later, but essentially they help you to deal with negative square roots and continue computing Also, when you multiply square roots, you can write them under the same square root bracket. It's hard to show on here, but suffice to say: __ __ _____ \/-2 *\/-2 = \/-2*-2 Edit: so that doesnt display well at all. Let's try code brackets. extra edit: a bit better.
  3. Yeah, if it isn't readied you can't cast it. detect magic essentially shows you magical auras on anything that's magical. also - Tip: as a wizard, you can leave slots unprepared. If you do, you can prepare spells in them later, it takes about 15 minutes to do. from here: Essentially, this lets you keep slots open for utility spells. You obviously want to generally prepare your battle spells ahead of time.
  4. The whole point is to teach them how to deal with their emotions and do what needs to be done, which is why they're put through every single emotional stress that can be done. Also, the only person whose test we have to go off of is nyaneve's, and she channels every time we see while giving in to the emotion, not remaining calm. The Aes Sedai still experience every emotion they do just as strongly as they normally would. They just don't ACT upon them. In order to get them to act upon them, the Allomancer would HAVE to be able to push it beyond their breaking point, which for an Aes Sedai who has trained her whole life in ignoring emotion is going to be VERY high. And even then, i'm not convinced they couldn't channel (as the examples before of people channeling while NOT keeping cool). Also, in order for Kel to riot fear, there HAS to be fear in the first place. I highly doubt one lone man who can't channel is likely to inspire ANY fear in a hardened Aes Sedai like Moraine. Edit: apparently ninja'd by shiv on my second point.
  5. But Theodrin is only an accepted and doesn't necessarily know what she's talking about Also, there's plenty more examples of people channeling when losing their calm. Lanfear does it all the time, Elaida does as well. Aviendha channels without being calm when she accidentally opens a gateway when rand surprises her and she freaks out. There's plenty of precedent to show that Theodrin was likely just wrong, and believing what she was taught. I don't see why it would be any different. The same level of fear caused by an allomancer would be EXACTLY the same as the same level of fear caused by a trolloc. All the allomancer can do is increase or decrease the feeling to whatever extent they have the ability to. They can't manipulate how the person acts on or deals with the emotion. There's nothing intrinsically more "scary" than the same level of fear in either scenario. It doesn't matter what the cause it. A fear level of X is the same regardless of the source.
  6. no, channel saidar doesn't have to do with maintaining calm, that's just what aes sedai do because of the command it gives them in interpersonal contact. Saidar has to do with surrendering to it, which i'm pretty sure is not something you could riot or soothe. Case and point, Nyaneve channels when angry (in a rage, no less) all the time, even after she's gotten past her block. And plenty of the wonder girl's PoV's talk about "fear racing through them" while they're channeling. Channeling the OP has nothing to do with maintaining a particular emotional state, just being in a lucid enough state that you keep fighting/surrendering.
  7. Za on a TW/TL tile can be pretty potent, too.
  8. Sure you can. Regardless of WHERE the emotion comes from, it's still the same emotion, internally caused or externally. Fear of an 8 or 9 level (on one to ten) is the same if that fear is caused by a trolloc or by an allomancer rioting it. If you can suppress it in one situation, you can suppress it in another. The only boundary to what level of emotions you can't suppress is what goes beyond your personal reserves of will to do so. And as mentioned, the test to be an aes sedai put through hundreds of situations to go against every possible range of emotions it can. No matter how hard Kel could riot her fear, i'm willing to bet that there was some situation in that test that's further beyond what kel could riot up to.
  9. Actually, she doesn't need to see him. There's one point where one of the red ajah who went to capture the men in the black tower is getting hunted down by logain that she thinks to herself something like "I need to get out of his sight. Men, for whatever reason, always seem to think you need to see your target in order to set the weaves"
  10. that's right, birhtday. You heard me. I don't take any part of it back.

  11. Happy birhtday, kchan!

  12. That would also require an intimate knowledge about how the one power works, something Kel doesn't have Plus, as stated above, Aes sedai are masters of controlling their emotions. How this interacts with allomancy is anyone's guess.
  13. I meant "ill-defined" as in it's very open in what can do, not in any bad sense. It probably was a poor choice of words, though Right, but the one power is basically as instant as thought, so she doesn't NEED a lot of time to react. Barring some sort of unfair circumstances (Kel gets a the drop on her and can attack from complete stealth), she will be able to react to whatever he does with some sort of counter measure using the power. Most Aes sedai deaths are either A) by user of the power who is more powerful, during some giant battle, in which case defending yourself from everything at all times is hard for anyone, or C) done from complete surprise/stealth (or poisoning or something). Head-to-head and one-on-one, a mundane person (one who can't wield the power) stands little to no chance in killing an Aes sedai.
  14. ^ This ^ For all the tricks and skill required to use allomancy to make it a deadly killing machine, the one power just has so much more innately built into it, that it can, when used by someone effectively, trump basically anything an allomancer can throw at them. As i've been saying, it's a question of scope. The one power can basically deal with anything an allomancer can pull off simply because the limit of what it can do is so ill defined.
  15. You see no outward sign of death, either physical or magical. The best that you can ascertain is that he essentially just stopped living, suddenly.
  16. (yeah, knowledge arcana is fine. You could also make either a knowledge nature or survival check if you want to check for more mundane causes of death) Turjan nods and begins inspecting the area, and then the body carefully, poking and prodding here and there with his 10-foot pole. After a while, he stands up and shakes his head, "There aren't any traps that I can find, magical or mundane." He stands up and holds some of the bundles of papers. The papers themselves are huge, ranging from about the size of a poster to even larger, and most are bound together crudely. "These papers are also written in an unknown script. They appear to be an ancient form of giant. I can speak giant, but I can't make heads or tails of this. If i spend some time with it, I might be able to figure something out, but I can't make any guarantees. Maybe an hour or so."
  17. just saw this, looks pretty cool. Not $350 cool, but still.
  18. Glancing about, you notice nothing that causes immediate alarm. You do notice a few sheaves of paper poking out of a large satchel at the gargantuan man's belt.
  19. I'd be up for it. If it's IRC, i'm totally gonna just hop into it via trillian and have it open on my phone and home/work PC practically 24/7
  20. Yeah, i was watching it throughout the day earlier. It shot up hard in the last couple of hours, and shifted hands a few times.
  21. well, if we go PURELY off of votes in the last round, zaphod and rake got well over double of Kylar And from a powers perspective, we all know this is just a popularity contest, and will play out as such
  22. I dunno, i always though that brent weeks wasnt that big, fans wise. Though i could be wrong (i personally have never read his stuff). If i had to put money on it, i would say that the finalist for the right side is likely to be granny weatherwax. She's always been a huge fan favorite, and Terry Prachett's disc world is VERY popular. For left, i'm convinced it's either going to be Rake or Moraine, and i think that whichever of the two dominates there is likely going to be the overall victor. [/Eero guessing]
  23. Well, i'm pretty sure that if Moraine/Kel doesn't beat Rake (i'm like 99% sure Moraine will beat Kel, so most likely Moraine), then i'm fairly sure Rake is probably going to win it. I don't think anyone on the other side of the brackets has the fan power to stand up to him....
  24. Yeah, i think zaphod is getting stomped in the next round against Rake, unfortunately.
  25. heh, i watched that the other day. On one hand, i can't believe that this is actually real. How could someone not get that? And on the other, i fear that this probably IS real....which is....sad.....
