So....who wants to play some D&D?
Eerongal replied to Eerongal's topic in World's 17thShardest Dungeon
It's basically just stronger rope, for the most part. It's only useful if you're afraid someone will break your rope somehow, by cutting it or something. Though, of course, at higher levels chains become pretty trivial in strength (and most mundane equipment is pretty much forgettable at high level too. Low level characters are the only ones who ever really use most of the random adventuring equipment. With possibly the exception of a 10-foot pole) -

Depends. Whatever piece of equipment you think you could put to good use is potentially helpful. Also, as a wizard, weight is a very real concern for you, so you're lucky in this regard because the random equipment you can carry around is a lot less than someone else. Honestly, Emeralis actually has a pretty good set of generic adventuring equipment. Other things that might be useful: Chains Ink Oil Lanterns (specifcially bullseye lanterns) Torches (you can never have too many light sources at low level) Candles (when you need as little light as possible) Rope is always good -

Does anyone think they'll have a trapper based character ready any time soon? If not, i'm going to send an NPC in with the current 3 who are still dinking about in town. Also: What Emeralis said. There's a number of people who have never played before doing this as their first campaign. Once you get the base rules down, it's not too hard. From there it's just getting used to the specifics of your character -
Can fan made pictures go into the wiki?
Eerongal replied to LevenThumps's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Thats how wikipedia does it. All their stuff is covered under fair use, and they attribute the author. I think there's also requirements on how big it is, dimensions wise, for it to be considered fair use. In which case, i don't think you need to seek the author's permission. they have guidelines and such about it here -
Discreet Room Seynir, Striax, & Umieri Grimacing at the hand you produce from your spell pouch, Murl spreads his hands apologetically and says, "Can't blame a fella for tryin'!" With that, he walks over to the table and scoops up the two gold pieces. Deftly, he reaches into a pouch at his waist, and drops down 5 silver marks. Afterwards he turns back and continues, "Now, we could certainly arrange for "passage" out of the city, but we'll want to wait for the heat to die down, obviously. As for a hired hand, we always have people looking for work. What sort of 'projects' do you need this person to be able to carry out?" Also, for a level 1 character, 40 GP is quite a bit. For example, normally a monk starts with 12 GP (though they get the least gold in the first place). To the common man, 40 GP is a fortune. However, once you've got a few levels under your belt, 40 GP will be nothing

well, the point should still stand. Basically, what we're saying, is that the compiler that's doing the compiling is probably saving a cache of pre-compiled bits so that it can do its job faster, and the pieces probably weren't exactly fit together right, and it really needed to recompile one bit instead of working from the same cache again and again. You retyping it so that it thought the code was all new basically flagged it to recompile the part, and once it did, it replaced the bad bit that it had sitting around that it was using over and over.

Python can do web scripting and application development, right? I've never used it, and know almost nothing about it, but i know quite a few people who swear by it. Because if so, that would probably be a pretty good option, too.

Doesn't particularly matter when, so long as your count is accurate. Before, after, a week later, so long as you know how much you have -
Discreet Room Seynir, Striax, & Umieri After knocking on the wall a moment later the stone wall slides open slowly. Jaxs ducks into the room and moves to a corner, standing with his arms crossed over his chest. After Jaxs takes his position, Murl ducks in an smiles a greasy smile at you. "Reached a decision then, have we?" Taking note of the gold piece lying on the table, he continues, "I trust you've found our offer to your liking? Of course, the agreed upon 6 SP per head will be paid in advance." With that, he begins to move towards the table, obviously intent on the gold pieces.

What's the question? When to deduct the money or something? -
Discreet Room Striax Searching the room quickly reveals the room to be almost air-tight. In fact, the door itself fits so securely into its panel, it's almost completely unnoticeable even under careful scrutiny. The walls seem thick all around, at least a foot of stone in most places by your best estimation. The room appears not only completely secure, but you're relatively sure that if someone were to spend an extended period of time in here (based on the size, probably days to a week or two) there's a good chance they might even begin to suffocate.

So if it's an award for the BEST cosmere related pun, does that mean we take the award away from the current holder when a better one comes along?

Discreet Room Umieri, Striax, & Seynir Looking at his associate, Murl nods and Jaxs stands up. Quickly, Murl pulls open the entry way, and he and Jaxs make their way out. "When you have completed your discussion, simply knock on the wall twice." With that, he pulls the stone block closed. The three of you are now alone in the small room.
-
Discreet Room Umieri, Striax, & Seynir Ducking down and moving quickly inside, you stand inside of a room relatively small of size. It's approximately big enough to fit about 4-5 horses abreast , and the ceiling comes in just barely above your heads. The room itself is wholly unremarkable, made of the same worked stone as the rest of the building. The only apparently entrance is the one you just came in through. There are two small footstools and a flat, plain table laid out in the room. On the table, you see a few copper pieces and a deck of cards Inside the small room are two others, one a thin, weaselly-looking man, and the other a hardened, burly street tough. The burly man sits on a footstool near the table with a thick cudgel across his lap, while the thin man stands to the side of the opening, and as soon as you all enter, pushes shut the stone block behind you. The thin man steps forward, begins rubbing his hands together, and speaks, "I hope you won't mind if I get down to business quickly on this, since you're being chased. My name is Murl, and my associate here is Jaxs. We're employed by an organization of less than sterling repute, if you catch my drift. I saw most of what happened in the bar, and I can't vouch for your guilt or innocence, but is also not my place to judge. All I know is that I can offer the services of our organization if you would like a secure location to hide until the heat dies down." Licking his lips, the Murl continues, "Of course, these services don't come free, mind you. But neither will you find them overbearing. I think you will agree, for a service such as I am putting at your disposal here, that 5 SP a head will be reasonable, would you not? Of course, if you wish to decline, I will open this panel and you will be free to leave, but the odds of evading capture are much more in your favor should you remain here." With that, he gestures towards the interior of the small room, and turns to look over the party awaiting an answer.

well, in my opinion, the thing is that JS/PHP/ASP/what-have-you-is significantly different from coding HTML/CSS/etc. because they're markup languages, as opposed to a scripting language like JS/PHP/ASP/etc. that it sounds like what she's wanting to get into. Because of this, she has no foreknowledge of various programming constructs that are standard among most languages, which makes it a bit harder for her to just "jump in" and learn it since she has no knowledge of what/how things like variables, loops, objects, etc. all function (presumably). It may actually be to her benefit to start messing around with vbscript locally on her PC to get used to these sort of concepts, and then transition to, say, ASP (which is basically "vbscript for websites") and once she feels comfortable with shift from scripting-web design changes, go from there to PHP, JS, or any other language she wants to learn (though my suggestions goes towards either JS or PHP since they're pretty much the largest of the web-based languages these days, as opposed to more outlier things like ruby on rails or something)

Well, that depends. Are you looking to stick with web based technologies, or are you looking more for application development things?

i'd just like to point out a couple of things. Java doesn't really have "globals" per say, since everything is a member of a class, and Java was made, by design, to have as few undefined operations as possible (unlike C/C++ which had many of them included, again, by design). Off hand, i would say that something like a dangling pointer would be the cause of this, if it wasn't for the fact that its basically impossible (at least to my knowledge) to have dangling/wild pointers in java, so i guess that doesn't really help..... Though, i second the notion that it was probably some errant/wrong compiler optimization. I've had things happen like that to me before where it works odd/incorrectly, and i copy and paste the code and recompile it and it works. My guess is that "refreshing" the code is pretty much kicking the compiler in the pants telling it to recompile that bit, instead of working from cache somewhere or something. Though i haven't worked with java in particular enough to really speak anything on it (my java experience was mostly in college in the early 2000's, so its both stale and limited. I prefer C#, and have worked professionally in that and all manner of basic-like languages) Though, of course, it could always be magic. Not something you should rule out.

yup. Makes sense, with the flaw you have less control over your character in those situations, where as if you just roleplay it, you can use your discretion on the situation
-
well, when it comes to stats and stuff, some people are totally willing to select things and minimize their drawbacks when it comes to roleplaying how it works (one of the reasons it recommends against roleplaying based flaws in the flaws guidelines, though im more than willing to allow them if they are actually relevant and a drawback in any way). And honestly, if you just wanted it for roleplaying reasons, you could just roleplay that way with out it, though a "free" feat is always nice if you were going to do it anyways
-
yeah, that should be fine. edit: mainly, i just wanted to make sure it wasnt going to be like "its this ring which i keep buried down in my satchel!" and something that would actually potentially be of consequence
-
well, flaws arent supposed to give any benefit other than a feat, so directionless gives too much because it gives con +1 as well, if you drop that it would be ok. For the other one, it depends on what you select as the item you are protective of. It's too easy to abuse that one by selecting something that would never come under fire, and essentially just get a "free" feat
-
i dunno, that would just encourage people to make make spammy threads

Well, initially when i started reading WoT, egwene seemed like a pretty good character because she was the general "strong, independent tomboy", but later on she starts getting too over opinionated, and bull headed. She basically just auto assumes "i'm right and everyone else is wrong", which honestly, in my opinion, makes her wholly unfit for any position of leadership. Also, her just abandoning rand to become Aes sedai did sort of irk me, but at the same time, rand pretty well acknowledged they drifted apart, so it wasn't too bad. Well, some characters are left out of certain books intentionally, according to RJ. Mat and Perrin were left out of two (separate) books after they had taken injuries in the prior book to allow them some down time. But there's usually a "behind the scenes" reason why the person never shows up for a few books. Not saying its necessarily good form or endorsing that particular writing style, just that there's reasons why they do a disappearing act.
