  2. The quote from chapter 79 of Words of Radiance is interesting I read that as the Diagramm deemed Roshar (and maybe Ashyn) the only inhabitated worlds. Oathbringer, however, features an expedition learning about Azure, Riino and the Spren trading with somebody else. So does that change their reasoning? Is a split in the Diagramm about this question about to happen? Would it indeed invert their reasoning. If the species has to survive at all cost, sacrificing Roshar to that end may be reasonable.
  3. Conjoiners must be at rest with respect to each other to join. Assuming absolute directions they will also stay at rest with respect to each other. (With the exception of down not being paralell) Reversers however move in opposite directions. Hence they must develop a speed difference as soon as they are moved. There we have a fundamental difference. Then why recheck that the board is still absolutely horizontal? It is entirely plausible that they trust their furniture to be stationary. But then why recheck only something? Especially if you want to impress the boss with your dilligence.
  4. Range. Availability. Freight.
  5. If you had a "Fluffy" I am sorry. Losing somebody you love always hurts.
  6. No. A reverser will keep the joining even while the halves are in motion towards each other. We are sure of that or Navani's platform would have failed as soon as it moved. Secondly, we have no idea how reversers deal with rotational movement. Dalinar describe in meticulous detail how his scribe checks the levels and puts the reed into its place. No alignment north/south
  7. Unfortunately no. Azure tried to operate a spanreed in a cave. If you need anything more than levels and a compass that would be impossible. Yes, but for all axes? It looks very much like down has to be down. But left and forward? Well, if you need aluminium for turning there is no reason you could turn only 180 degrees. If you can rotate the gems, no need for full mobility either. We do read about checking the levels multiple times.
  8. We have Elantrians in Oathbringer. I doubt Brandon wants even more people who are thousands of years old. And it becomes improbable that they haven't figured out how to do some arcane stuff off Sel. The Ire being in Secret History means that Elantris has to be before that. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell has to be after Secret History as well. If Alloy of Law is still supposed to be between SA5 and SA6, the time starts getting crowded. An awful lot of things happen in an improbably short time.
  9. But any intermediate size is extremely unlikely. The boxes are made in two sizes.
  10. Why? It is easier to materialize a dead Blade. It is their default and every Shardbearer can do it, while for a living Blade you need a higher oath. If that were literally bows, that won't be a problem. If Shardarrows are involved, which oath are we talking about?
  11. Yes, the evidence for living spren changing shape as weapons is overwhelming. But can they do so without physical contact to a Radiant? Shallan once hands Pattern to Kaladin, but both are Radiants. So can you throw a Shardspear without it dematerializing?
  12. Does he ever throw it? Can you? For a dead blade that takes quite some training.
  13. Suppose you have two production lines for sturdy boxes. One line makes reasonably large boxes, the other line makes tiny boxes. You have a tiny box but you want a large box. So you make a Forgery to the effect that orders were mixed up and you got a large box. Should be rather simple. Your cute family pet "Fluffy", who fits snugly into the larger box climbs into it. You destroy the soulstamp. What happens now? Does it involve pet juice, remorse, traumatized children and a divorce?
  14. Gold. I have a healthy sense of self-preservation.
  15. The Heralds travel without a gate. So do the Fused. You have to make the initial trip by another route. The Heralds want to get away, not establish nicer trade routes.
  16. They keep them with themselves while travelling and servants run around with them and they use arrangement with multiple reeds and one board. If the coordinates are absolute they will need to realign their boards every evening when they make camp. And they would have to realign the spanreed itself with respect to north and south when they plave it on the board. Worse, searching all three volumes I found no mention of a compass. In fact we have no idea whether magnets are known on Roshar. That makes intuitive sense, but it means that the direction of the force is changed. But it is not the only interpretation. It is possible that the elements are no longer equal and that the one shrouded in aluminium indeed is isolated in a plane, but you must not move it in another direction or it will get stuck or something bad happens. Attach it to the reed and rotate it 90 degress. In fact add two or add a small board to press the reed against. Well, no. Or rather if we are happy to look at translational movement only, that will be correct. Unfortunately we are not. You write with these things. They definitely transmit also rotational movement. That means you also need to align the orientation of the gem. A careful search of the text reveals that the gem is on the side of the reed. So you need to have your gem also point in the right direction. Well, no. Or rather for the purpose of watching them for flashes. When actually writing they are not held at all. Otherwise the scene with Shallan's reed hovering in free air becomes impossible to explain. But then why are they so pedantic about the board being level to the point of using levels? It would be enough for the reed to be orthogonal to the board, not upright in an absolute sense. It looks to me like spanreeds interact with gravity. I thunk we need to look at a more complicated system. If I account for everything, I will land at a system I don't like myself Basically, all else being equal coordinates are relative, not absolute Except, gravity matters. You must align with respect to gravity Spanreeds are not fully symmetric. They are symmetric with respect to translational movement. But the send/receive settings do something. Spanreeds are not symmetric with respect to rotational movements.
  17. But they do. The lattice inexplicably gets lighter during turns.
  18. Suppose you are exerting a force on a part of a conjoiner isolated in a plain that pushes it out of that plane. The other half does not move, presumably, as it feels no force. If you move only in the plane, they will act like normal conjoined fabrials. Now assume a force vector that goes out of the plain at a 45 degree angle. Is the force vector redirected into the plain, that is does the magnitude of the force stay, or is the force diminished to the component with the plane? Well, why then do we never hear about somebody aligning a spanreed north to south?
  19. The problem is that we have no evidence for the tY-axis level. In fact we have evidence for the spanreed placed by hand. Why do they not just turn off the conjoiners? OK, so if you could not change the vector of force you might be able to move but the force would still be there. It would be bad if you could basically move Fourth Bridge down but the chull cart would still feel the force. The assumption that change means a turn within the isolated plane s not there. Then you have changed the vector of force already. If you movd the reverser, for example, down and left, Fourth Bridge would feel only a force up, not right. I don't see how you can require that advance without imposing an absolute frame of reference on the spanreeds. The problem with that is that they are aligned down. On a sphere however, down is not paralell. This is highly problematic. But it can be solved by the sender just using a holder for the reed, keeping it on the dot. Indeed I am afraid this protocol is not compatible with Shallan's experience using Tyn's spanreed. The reed could not be hanging in the air, if the sender's reed were still at position 1. It seems to me that you call somebody bu outright switching to 3 = "send" Or we have an XOR. One reed needs to be in 2 and the other in 3. Possible but not confirmable, it seems to me.
  20. If that were true the Fused would simply kill with aluminium weapons. (Scadrial) Shields and armor most likely Flying in such a way that they are hard to hit with a thrown missile. Simple distance and reliance on ranged weapons. Tactically those spears merely return a Windrunner to normal.
  21. In theory it could be Raysium. That sounds implausible though. The question is why Kaladin does not identify it as aluminium remains though. Surely the Radiants have captured such a spear. Well, no. Only if fully enclosed. Which the device isn't or Kaladin would not see the gem. And the text says "lined" not made of. The head needs to have a coating, too. (Scadrial) Well, they do not block all Investiture. Dalinar's visions showed Gravitation and Abrasion used through Plate. That is through the user's Plate. The lashee had to dismiss his helmet. I am sure they did that a few times and that was a sad day for Bridge Four. And then they developed counters.
  22. Exactly. The Fused are doing things that use up Voidlight (healing, transporting, lashing we have seen). Hence they must have a source of Voidlight. It cannot be the Everstorm, because it is too new. Now we have two possibilities A: the Fused are supplied with a flow of Voidlight from Odium (Scadrial) they are very efficient at flying B: The Fused use an unknown mechanism to power some of their Surges for some uses (they can lash, but do so rarely) They are getting Voidlight from an unknown source Now, a constant supply need not mean an unlimited supply. I have a constant supply of electrical power at home. But it is not unlimited. If I use too much at a time fuses will trigger or wires would melt and I have to pay for usage. The way the Fused are behaving suggests that they are constrained by flow limits, not budget. Hence they keep flying. They can afford it.
  23. But it does. That is exactly what happens when Szeth lashes a rock. It runs out of Stormlight and crashes down eventually. This merely tells us that objects have a certain capacity to hold Stormlight. But do they Voidbind? Or are they just using Voidlight to fuel Surgebinding? They do have Illumination. Yet Renarin does not, in exchange for something else. That suggests that Surges and "Voids" are really different. The problem is that they must have a source of Voidlight. That teleporting Fused charged his spheres somehow. And it cannot be the Everstorm for the Fused are older. For all we now they are just on Odium's tap and get a certain feed that is enough to constantly fly, but if they want more, they have to land and fill spheres. Or that just means that Stormlight is a more energetic fuel at the cost of being hard to retain.
  24. I am quite sure the church will hear nothing about them. It is totally unclear how the reaction to imprisoning the actual Heralds would be. And the coalition and Jasnah have no interest in damaging organized religion right now. Their greatest theological problem is a Desolation. They operated on the premise that the time of Desolations is over. Dalinar is one madman. People claiming to be Heralds cannot be new either. All that can be explained away. Voidbringers - things enslaving and killing you tend to be taken as real.
  25. And they would concentrate on things that are unlikely to have changed the Stormfather does not know about the gem archives do not explain What would be on the list what does the enemy want what powers do the Unmade have what powers do Regals have how to unlock the oath gates how to build oath gates Yet the Heralds are unlikely to answer one of the most pressing questions: How to destroy the Everstorm?
