character development Devaan's Training ground
Grey Knight replied to Nohadon's topic in The Alleyverse
Kerith glanced over at Mara, seeming to look more closely at her this time. "Mara, isn't it?" he asked. "Devaan's mentioned you. How's your brother?" -

"A... delivery," Kerith said, glancing at Alum before turning back to Devaan. "I need a favor. Captain Samariam Orren was recently interred in a Dreadnought, and he's having trouble adjusting. I thought that bringing him here to train with your students might freshen his mind. Can he stay for a while?" -

A Thunderhawk gunship roared over the peaks, soaring over the training ground. It pulled sharply around, coming to a hard stop and touching down outside the front gates. Surrounded by the loud hiss of the cooling engines, the front ramp unceremoniously detached, hitting the ground with a dusty thud. A space marine, armored in the black and white of the Raptors chapter, walked down towards the gates. He stopped just outside the open door, noticing Mara and Alum. "Hey," Sergeant Kerith said, nodding to Mara. "Is Devaan here?" -

The sergeant looked back to KoTiel, lowering her bolter. "The Thunderhawks are loading refugees," she said. "You should hurry down, xenos."

The plague marine collapsed in a steaming pile of offal and flies, breathing its last. Something exploded outside, and a wet roar of pain echoed through the walls. Blue-armored space marines burst into the control room, spreading out and covering everyone inside. The sergeant, wearing a red helm, spared a glance towards Devaan. "Sir?" she said, motioning towards the hole. A space marine walked cautiously towards it, covering the hole with his bolter. "What happened here?"

The bloated claw, which had been sitting idle for now, suddenly withdrew at the touch of the Stormlight, pulling Syen out with it. A nasty chomp sounded outside, followed by a wet burp.

The marine laughed, spewing pus and gore all over Devaan. "Grandfather Nurgle says hello!" it giggled, grabbing Devaan in a bearhug and lifting him off the floor. Devaan's fist was still through the marine's chest- it just didn't seem to care.

Back in the control room: A huge, bloated claw smashed through the wall, grabbing Syen in it's disgusting grip! A swollen chaos marine appeared out of nowhere, stabbing a filth-encrusted knife into KoTiel's back. A cloud of flies swarmed around it, obscuring them from the others.

The thing was gone. A sweet, putrid smell wafted through the air, and flies buzzed around Devaan.

A rotted, steaming claw came down on Devaan's shoulder, gripping him lightly. "Dear child," something rasped over Devaan's head. "Won't you accept a gift from Grandfather Nurgle?"

Good to have you back, Mraize. I like the story, even if I'm not sure that Voidus is canonically a Shard.

The darkness evaporated, leaving behind... Nothing. The chaos marine was gone. Quiet laughter filled the room, growing louder before trailing off with a pathetic whimper.

Nothing. An empty hallway stretched before Devaan, the air eerily silent. A single, bloated fly landed on Devaan's arm.

The plague marine disappeared in the cloud of darkness. The room went silent, save for the low buzz of a fly. Somewhere, a liquid slowly dripped onto the floor, echoing through the hall.

On The Honor of Maccrage: The tech-priest squinted her eyes at the insignifant blue dot that was the Alleyverse. It was hard to imagine such a small place could house so much pain. She knew there was only one option left, one last cleansing. The city had fallen. The astropaths were reporting that a second wave of daemons were approaching, and she could see, through her satellite-linked screen, parts of the city falling. She stared at the rune in the corner, glistening in the harsh mechanical light with an almost spiteful glow. She knew what it did. She never thought she'd have to use it. But she did. She started the Exterminatus Machines whirred as they spun in their place, reacting to her chants, rattling with loose parts, parts which carried the weapon that would be the end of this city. They grew more and more hungry, the only sound the tech-priest could hear. "My armour is contempt," She said, swiping across the screen. Warheads locked into position, feeding into the towering cannons that dominated the weapons deck. "My shield is disgust." On the screen, a section of the city exploded in filth and gore as a Nurgle daemon manifested. She could almost see the mass of bloated flies and putrid flesh as it slowly swallowed the buildings around it. "My sword is hatred!" She shouted, plugging her mechandrites into the console and aiming the point-gun defenses. Ancient systems activated, swiveling towards the city and firing their payload. The Nurgle Unclean One was struck by lances of burning plasma and storms of flak, and it vanished from the screen. She unplugged her mechandrites, raising her hand. Suddenly, everything seemed to quiet as the tech-priest hesitated over the confirmation rune. "By the Emperor's name," she whispered, pressing the symbol, watching the massive guns swivel towards the fallen city. "Let none survive." The guns fired. ------------------ Glimmering shields of Aonic symbols flickered up, surrounding the Canton in a dome of impenetrable energy. Inside the control room, a space marine stepped away from the activation console and breathed a sigh of relief. “Whew!” he said. “I thought for sure we wouldn’t make it in ti-“ A bloated chaos marine appeared and plunged a knife into his back. “Gurgle gurgle gurgle,” the space marine finished, falling to the ground.
