  1. "Devils" I think is not used at all in the context of the Desolations. I don't see it a stretch to be used for humans. They are "devils" because of their actions, not because of their race. A human can easily call an evil surgebinder a devil. Where "evil" is what he perceives as evil... So yeah, maybe they were non KR surgebinders, maybe they were KR, maybe they were parshendi, maybe they were azish ... "devil" would fit them... The thread is "KR internal conflicts" and I was suggesting that it's possible the windrunners and stonewardens were fighting other KR orders, which would imply a major conflict in the KR ranks. Relevant enough?... http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4222-spoiler-new-purelake-reading-info/
  2. The "carries my lord's own blade" is easy to explain... When the heralds become heralds, Jezrien was king. He (volunteered) for herald, his daughter presumably did the same, maybe some of his men, and maybe some that were not his men. Thus, the phrase above is easy to explain if Jezrien was not Darkness's king (before the heralds were made), but he was the king of the other guy. The deference remained across millennia, so that guy still refers to Jezrien as "my lord". Darkness has no reason to do this - maybe he was a king himself of another land/people.
  3. I want to add another thing here... I think that Neshua Kadal is the Parshendi name for Jezrien - probably meaning king (neshua) of heralds (kadal ~ kadasix).
  4. It was established that 'gibberish' was the word used in TwoK to describe the Dawnchant Dalinar was speaking, Dawnchant Wit was speaking, and the crazy drunk guy. Also the Lift interlude suggests that Jezrien is currently "drooling" on a permanent basis.
  5. Oh, and all herald swords might be shorter. I think that we have somewhere a description of Darkness's sword, and is similar to Szeth's.
  6. Also, he talks about the Edgedancers, how they were, as if he knew them. Nobody is that old but the heralds... and from the heralds, the above explain why is Nalan.
  7. From Eshonai's reading, we know the Shattered Plains were a great city. Thanks to the above quote, we now know for sure that the fight in the Prelude was not on the Shattered Plains.
  8. What does "ride the stormwinds" mean? Definitely Kaladin's body did not left the roof. Also, did he "ride the stormwinds" because there was stormlight in the storm? Or because of something else? BS said that the storm is more like the mists, not the stormlight, hence my assumption that the storm is the body, and the stormlight is the means of accessing the power. By last bit I mean that maybe this is how Odium has permanently splintered Honour - he doesn't have a shardpool anymore, and instead the power is released in each highstorm, before it has a chance to "accumulate". And then, maybe a Desolation is started when Odium's shardpool is full...
  9. At the recreance vision, the KR were fighting with someone before coming back to drop their shards. It was not a desolation. Who were they fighting with? Hundreds of KRs from 2 orders (windrunners and stonewards) in Dalnar's vision? They would crush any mortal force... Unless they were fighting other KR orders...
  10. It's not necessary a problem. In mistborn, metal, something "common", was the focus that allowed you to access the power. Here, stormlight can have that role, and be something that is not "common". Something more. However, it's clear that highstorms are not just a carrier of stormlight, since Kaladin was able to become one with the storm, and see through that. I think a good question for BS would be: after the storm, is Kaladin a sliver? Let's not forget that BS's magic revolves around cycles. In Mistborn, you had 1000 years for Ruin's power to gather at the well. Here, you have 2 cycles: Desolations, and Highstorms. 2 shards. Since highstorms are more frequent, I would say that means you have less power, or the power is released before gathering enough to become a full shard?
  11. Some of them are from the future, so it makes sense that some are from the past.
  12. I think the stormlight is the focus. In Mistborn terms, spren bond = allomantic gene stormlight = metal gem + stormlight = lerasium|atium bead (that cannot be "consumed") I think BS said the pattern cannot be seen with the eyes, though maybe it's seen when stormlight is filtered through. Maybe the glyphs shining on the KRs plates are patterns, the entire plate being a big fabrial. We know it contains stormlight (which starts leaking when the plate is cracked), so maybe putting a spren in it + having a pattern => "fabrial"
  13. The metal is not invested in the fabrials. The metal is used to create a pattern from the (storm)light coming out of a gem that has a spren trapped. The combination of gem + spren contains somehow the investiture (I'm not sure that the spren alone is the investiture, although it might be possible). I don't think they were used for storage, else all would have been using the same type of cut & gem. The KR in the vision seems to be using a fabrial that works according to the same principles as "new" fabrials do. Of course, the spren might not have been "trapped" in the "old" fabrial, but free to do as it wished - similar to this I have a theory that the plate acts like a fabrial when having a spren in it....
  14. I see 1 of 2 possibilities: 1) Gavilar wanted the return of the KR. 1a) The Parshendi seem to have a similar notion as Darkness, that having a bunch of surgebinders around will trigger a desolation. Just like Darkness is out and about executing surgebinders, the parshendi thought of getting rid of a man with these dangerous notions. Maybe the gods of the parshendi are nothing more than surgebinders, and since some of them are turning bad, they are the "dark gods"... 1b) There is something that Gavilar would have done thinking it will change the shards in better/make a surgebinder, that the parshendi knew more about and they knew that it would have the side effect - e.g. you can't bring back only the good guys, the bad guys will come with that as well. 2) There was something else besides restoring the KR orders that Gavilar had in mind.
  15. From the same quote, I gather they (the ghostbloods) don't know about the blade. I would say the blade is far more precious than the soulcaster, and they would not hesitate to kill everyone until the blade pops up.
  16. Jasnah told her that only a crazy person would go to shadesmar with only a half-dim gem... or something like that...
  17. I don't think anyone in the family knew about the Blade. It might be that even the ghostbloods do not know about the blade, else we might see them start killing her brothers and come after her to recover the blade.
  18. The stormlight is used to GO to shadesmar... But Elhokar could have used another surge, not soulcasting...
  19. Yes, that's how I interpreted the scene as well... further proof that Elhokar is a surgebinder...
  20. To go even more here on a limb.. her father's soulcaster was working (for her father) but then after fixing it it stopped working... Her father had a shardblade... Her father was a surgebinder with a shardblade?
  21. I read that quote as a direct message to Taravangian/the nurse killing the guy. I wish to sleep. I know now why you do what you do, and I hate you for it. I will not speak of the truths I see. He wants to sleep/die - he has seen in his vision why they are killing all the people, and he hates them for it. He will not give them an epigraph (a truth he sees in his dying vision).
  22. As a herald he would have been stuck in damnation before the desolation.
  23. Where do you get 2) from ? I see it as: he wore a crown centuries ago, when he was human (not herald). Now he is not a king anymore, but still has the royal manner.
  24. Larkin: stormlight = food Lift: food = stormlight
